We spent one night at the Inn following a funeral in Petersfield. The accommodation is of a high standard. Our twin-bedded room was spotless, the beds comfortable and there was a spacious ensuite bathroom with bath and shower. We enjoyed a tasty two course dinner with excellent service. The Manager, Chris, was welcoming and very helpful. In all, very good value for money and an enjoyable stay.

Stayed on Christmas night. Drab, small attic room with very little headroom over bed. No power points and tired bedding. The tv didn't work. Manager said he'd refund for this but hasn't and doesn't respond to my messages. Spoiled what had been a nice Xmas day.

I came with a group of 8. As previous reviewers have mentioned the menu is limited, but in my view that generally means better food as a wide variety means reduced quality or simply reheating frozen food. Chris was so adaptable as being gluten and dairy free my choice was limited and I just didn't want chips or carbs. So I asked if I could have just any meat and veg. He offered half a chicken and salad. Perfect! Chef had cooked it beautifully, two of us mentioned the amazing crispy skin. Chef also did a side of veg for me (carrots, cabbage and sugar snap peas). Very pleased. I wish all pubs would have at least one choice that's a simple low carb meat/fish and veg option. I reckon it would be popular. Nice big car park too.

We went for lunch on Saturday, It wasn’t busy,we ordered shandy to drink .The bar tender didn’t know what a shandy was,we told her and she brought the drinks to our table , The drinks were beers! We took them back and she put a little lemonade on the top ,not acceptable but hoped the fish and chips we had ordered would be okay ,the lunch arrived which was obviously cooked from frozen , we asked for the bill and was told £45 do you want a receipt! actually I would have preferred a itemised bill same as any other restaurant and perhaps an inquiry as to why the drink was left ,Think it must be new staff as before it was always a real treat to eat there ,now I feel I have been robbed ,won’t be returning.

How this pub has changed, for the worse unfortunately! There must have been a recent change of ownership/management since we were last here in the autumn. The menu, which wasn't extensive before but competent, is now very limited to around 4 starters and 6 mains, a disproportion amount of which are vegetarian. BUT, the biggest issue was the loud televisions, not one but two, one showing football and one showing rugby. This was worse than going into a rough town pub and it certainly shouldn't happen in a smart country pub. When we come out for a nice meal with friends and family, we don't want what we have a home, blaring televisions taking over and distracting from the conversation! The presence of the TVs will certainly deter us from returning. We may check first to see if this ridiculous and disappointing new "innovation" has been discontinued. Hope so!

Went to Locals Night which is held on the first Thursday of the month. Two courses for £15 including a drink. A very good offer indeed. One tasty Lamb Kofta with flat bread, couscous salad and dressing, one trout quiche with new potatoes and asparagus. Two scoops each of locally made gelato. All very delicious and decent sized portions. Realistically the pub should be packed on a Locals Night offer and I hope the word spreads for them as it was a very tasty meal at a ludicrously cheap price. We added extra drinks and thoroughly enjoyed our evening sitting outside in the peaceful countryside. Very friendly manageress and staff, excellent service and tasty meal. We will be back.

We decided on the trooper for some lunch on a Sunday. It’s a nice pub, lovely outdoor areas for seating and inside is pleasant too. I don’t want this to be fully negative but feel an honest assessment is required and hope they can take some opinions on the chin. The starter menu was very poor, soup, chicken wings, sardines on toast and a vegetable option I don’t recall. We would have definatley had a starter but due to the poor choices we all declined which is a great shame and a loss of business to the establishment. The roasts all looked appealing which we were still excited for. However, when they arrived they left much to be desired. 3 small roast potatoes per plate is a pretty measly offering, plus a slither of hard broccoli. The waitress did then bring a small plate of veg out, which was in one carrot sliced and a spoonful of cauliflower cheese to be shared between 2. The beef was 2 small-ish slices and a Yorkshire pudding was also provided. It’s a very small and almost insulting roast at over £16. I’m not being funny but a 4 pack of baking potatoes is 49p in Tesco and a broccoli the same, it won’t break the bank to provide a little more substantial veg. It seems to be a struggling pub and I can see why. It’s not exactly convenient to get to, so customers have to come on purpose and I doubt many would return when there are hundereds of other options within a 10 mile radius. The desert menu was also rather poor. I’m not of the opinion a big menu is a good thing, it’s nice to keep a small menu, but it also has to be appealing for customers. Such a shame as could be a great pub but Definatley would not return for food.

Locals night is the first Thursday of the month ; main and pudding plus a pint for £15. Expecting cheap options or small portions. Instead I had a massive piece of beef in southern fried batter, crispy gnocchi and a mushroom gravy. Husband had a large portion of crab and king prawn tempura on homemade coleslaw with hand cooked chips. Overly sweet Eton mess but a beautiful presented blue cheese and homemade chutney made up for it. Plus a pint of Pots bitter each for £30 . Absolute bargain for delicious food in a charming setting.

#1 of #1 in Froxfield doesn't mean very much on its own as The Trooper is all that there is on the road from Petersfield to the A32 but it is worth driving there. We had a family lunch. The menu was diverse with an excellent choice for both meat eaters and vegetarians and it all had a distinctive home cooked taste. Flavoursome with sauces that felt as though they had been chosen rather than come out of a packet. Yes, we had to wait a while but if you want it in a few minutes and microwaved out of a freezer then go to Wetherspoons! The pub itself doesn't have the dead hand of a brewery conversion or the standard gastro pub design. It is distinctive and a real pub with fine ales. Nice hospitality from the host and staff as well.

This pub is in a nice location and has a nice atmosphere. It is done out lovely. The waiter greeted us as we walked in which was nice and he managed to find us a table which was good as we had not made a reservation. I ordered the celery soup for starters, unfortunately and not mentioned on the menu it came with little bacon shavings and it was only after eating a mouthful of them that I realised. I'm intolerant to Pork so I started feeling ill pretty much soon after. I mentioned to the waiter that I wasn't expecting pork in a celery soup as it was not stated that it contained pork on the menu. They took it off the bill and offered a free drink which was good but I'm a vegetarian am intolerant to lots of meat and my meal along with my stomach has been completely ruined for the night!

At last a pub that sells good food. We were a party of eight with varied tastes, four of us being vegetarians. The staff were very helpful and prepared to make different dishes to suit us. The meat was lamb and I'm told was slow cooked and delicious. It was properly cooked, not that raw stuff which is quick to do. The menu isn't large which is a good sign. A large menu means freezers and microwaves are the order of the day. You do have to wait for the food though, so set enough time. Good food, properly cooked takes time. We shall definitely be going back.

Restaurant pleasant dinning room but _chaotic inefficient service however the food was excellent and reasonably priced. The hotel was very clean our room was a good size and had been upgraded. Comfortable bed excellent shower in the bath but very slippery! We asked for a non slip mat but didn't get one. We had to have the windows open as it was hot, so traffic noise was a problem, but we did get used to it.Breakfast was adequate and very well cooked and presented.Lydia was extremely pleasant friendly and efficient.A good place to stay for a couple of nights

We enjoyed a meal included as part of our first night stay at the Trooper Inn. There was some initial confusion as the staff on duty didn't appear to know what the terms of the deal were. Once this was sorted out we enjoyed a really good meal. Special praise for the Moroccan lamb shank, beautifully prepared and served. Wee also had breakfasts here which were also excellent.

We opted for a starter and main course from the lunchtime set menu. Good, fresh ingredients superbly cooked. Couldn't fault a thing. If only all pub food was this good!

Having driven past the previous day we returned on the Sunday for a roast. The nut roast was better than the normal dull boring veggie excuse for a roast. The welcome was very friendly with a great range of local real ales. All in all it was a lovely meal in a great traditional roadside pub!

Once a year, four of us get together for a catch up over dinner, or maybe just a few drinks. This year we decided it should be dinner at a location that sited us all.A colleague found The Trooper Inn on Trip Advisor, so we all met up at 7:00 for a relaxing evening. The greeting from our host was warm and accommodating and we had a choice of table, as it was a Monday evening and rather quiet. The menu, although quite short, had enough variation to suit most tastes. Two of us opted for the Moroccan lamb which was absolutely fantastic and by all accounts, the Moroccan chicken and the sausages were also very tasty. The puds were also great and I can highly recommend the collapsed chocolate soufflé!All in all a great evening and really nice food. We will be back again!Check out the photo of the half shoulder of Moroccan lamb, with dates and apricots - very tasty!

Amazing service, great menu choice and stunning food. Even though the menu isn't huge, there is great choice including veggie options. Everything is homemade and very delicious. We had such a lovely evening. Highly recommended!

We stopped here with our horses and we were so welcomed! Great food - nicely presented and quality ingredients. Soup was served in a really hot bowl - attention to detail that matters. Great customer care and attention. We shall be back! Good beers too.

I visited the pub for an early evening meal on recommendation of a friend. I was immediately impressed by the welcoming atmosphere, two roaring fires, multiple Good Pub awards and range of real ales. The menu was not extensive on a weekday vexing but varied and had some unusual dishes. The service of the meal was quite out of the ordinary for a pub, with complimentary introductory home baked bread and olives and a mid course sorbet freshener, even though I had only ordered from the fixed price two course menu. The amount of food was more than sufficient, of excellent quality and carefully flavoured. I am an enthusiastic cook myself so prone to criticising stock pub food, but this was definitely not that. The Ringwood Ale was also served just right, something that is often not the case with that beer.

It doesn't seem to matter how busy they are they always seem to be able to provide a table, good food and friendly service. The food is all freshly cooked and served with such nice staff. It is a pleasure to dine her.

Return visit to The Trooper Inn in Froxfield on a Saturday night. Great selection of real ales in a well stocked bar. We arrived at 8pm, and the pub was surprisingly quiet. Perhaps the weather kept people at home, but this was disappointing. Started with the sharing sea-food platter, which was extensive and delicious -- very well presented and tasty. We both ordered the lamb shoulder as our main, and these were absolutely massive! We both have healthy appetites, and neither of us could finish the meal -- a first I think. The meat was very tender and the vegetables perfect. A little expensive for pub food, could have done with a little less and saved room for dessert. Will go back in Summer.

We had lunch on Saturday 13th Feb, veg lasagne, I liked the complimentary bread, olive oil and balsamic vinegar, the service was excellent, we enjoyed the food however the lasagne was a bit dry, as we had a very late lunch it possibly just dried out! (we did not say anything and still enjoyed),returned Sunday 21st Feb, we had roast beef and a roast chicken, again complimentary bread etc, excellent meal, meat plentiful and good quality, lots of veg, good service once again. I will return and would recommend others.

Came across this Pub located on the main road to Petersfield. Very traditional with a log fire but the venue was rather cold on a winters day.An interesting menu not the norm, serving an excellent Greek lamb pita bread, seafood platter which was really battered although quite tasty and Scampi which was plentiful but battered to death. Not busy hence excellent service from a very friendly Czech waitress.Nice stop over, good selection draft beers and reasonably priced.

A favourite place of mine. There is always a warm welcome from Hassan and his staff and at this time of the year the addition of a welcoming open fire. The food is excellent especially the delicately spiced roast Lamb and Chicken Tagine dishes There is Fresh Fish of The Day and for vegetarians a delightful Moroccan spiced vegetable dish. The food is fresh cooked and the service is excellent. Wine and local real ales are very fairly priced. Menus available are: A La Carte, Midweek, Set Menu, Bar Snacks and Sunday Roast. Well worth a visit.

When my wife suggest 'why don't we go out' The Trooper is one of our first choices as not only do they do a Budget meal with two courses from their set menu for £15 but they also have a wide range a la carte menu but plenty of local beers and a great atmosphere.. The entire ambiance of the place generates conversation and last evening was no exception. Strangers or visitors love to talk in this lovely pub/restuarant
