Food was awful, service was friendly with plenty of banter. Pub was empty! Come to your own conclusions!

I'm keeping The food and the atmosphere were great, and the portion sizes were generous. They often have special offers throughout the week, such as 1-1 cocktail deals and the option to get any 4 tapas with a bottle of wine. Overall, I was pleased with the menu. On the downside, their service was quite slow, and the staff seemed a bit disorganized. Hopefully, things will have improved by our next visit.

Recommended going for the Tapas menu. My wife and I went for 5, but to be honest, 4 would have been enough. The steak and prawns were fantastic, well seasoned, and very tasty. The staff were friendly and efficient. We will be heading back to try some of their midweek specials.

Visited this pub with friends on a recommendation and wow, we were not disappointed. Staff were amazingly friendly, cheery and welcoming. Food, well we all had the Sunday roast and it was the best ever! Chicken and beef were superb, lovely vegetables, pureed sweet potato, red cabbage and other roast favourites (carrots, cauliflower cheese and potatoes). I have a dairy allergy and that was totally catered for, even down to my cauliflower cheese made for me. Nothing was too much trouble. Toilets were clean and smelt lovely, the ladies had a range of toiletries (should you require them), they’ve thought of the little touches. Oh, and if you like your fruity Vodka the Chase Rhubarb Vodka with lemonade is sublime. They do special nights for steak, tapas and are very dog friendly, even down to serving doggie ale and cocktails :-) A total gem of a pub with the most amazing food and atmosphere an absolute must to visit.

I use to live behind this pub nine years ago and remembered it as a good pub to go to! Unfortunately, when coming back here with my partner, there were 0 ciders available… not on tap, not bottled… I also felt the decor wasn’t as quirky as it once was, which was something I liked about the pub. The velvet curtains are incredible though. Not a bad pub, but not as good as I remembered.

Sunday roast - absolutely the best. One of the party had a pie which was homemade, he reckons it was the best ever. We're going back !

Had a roast lunch. The best in Alton in the last 6 months. Food was absolutely delicious. Good price. Excellent service.

Really lovely food. We came here for lunch as a stop off on our way south. What a pleasant surprise. Greeted, and served, by Courtney, behind the bar and Chef Matt preparing the food. For lunch a tapas menu was available which is refreshing to have in a pub. Lots of lovely choices. We went with the hummus- if you like garlic then this is a definite, the crispy squid, the Brazilian beef ‘skewers’ (long meatball style) the seared tuna with ponzu gel- like caviar- and the curried parsnip soup. It was all really delicious. Me, my husband and my 7 year old son finished the lot. Will definitely make a point of visiting here again on our way through. Delizioso chef!

We recently moved to Alton so this was our first visit. The food was excellent and great value and certainly merited 5 stars but, unfortunately, the service was second rate and so it's 4 stars this time.

Just had a wonderful Sunday lunch for my ahem cough (30th Birthday). Food was great and managed 3 courses, something I rarely do, and everything was delicious. The staff and service is spot on and we will definitely be back, once I'm out of this food coma! #TotallyStuffed x Thank you all for a wonderful meal x

Great local pub. Menu is small bit perfectly done. The small plates are fab, the bingo night great fun and the music on a Friday varied.

Great atmosphere for an early drink. Only problem was,early Friday evening, plus start to the weekend, NO ale on tap! Only offering lager and Guinness! Other than that quite busy and good atmosphere but sort your beer out

Didn't eat here so giving 5* because the man on the phone was very nice but just wanted to comment for people looking at reviews, this is no longer a gluten free kitchen. I read all the previous reviews that said it was and saw it on the 'findmegf' app as an exclusively gf place and got excited to visit but called to check and was told they stopped that now. Apparently they do have some gf options still but so do loads of places in town so it's not quite so unique anymore though I'm sure it's still lovely.

Our waitress was very friendly and very helpful. With a lovely sence 0f humour. She was excellent. The food was very good, with a great menu. Would definitely recommend, and go back, partly because of of the waitress 👍John.

We went to the George for the first time since the change of owners. We went to celebrate a family birthday. We had a good welcome, good food and drink. There was a band playing and they played 'Happy Birthday' for us. Altogether a very enjoyable evening.

What an experience! Drink excellent , service excellent and food to die for! Starters, mains and puddings were absolutely gorgeous ! We are so glad that this little gem is on our doorstep . Love the style of the pub. However they only accept card payments. If you buy a soft drink and go to the toilet you will be aggressively shouted at and publicly humiliated by the owner, who accuses you of taking drugs or filling your drink with your own spirits. Men shouldn’t be in the ladies toilets either!

First time at this pub. Fantastic , great service, great food, really friendly staff, great atmosphere and they loved our little dog. Thoroughly recommend.

Smashing Sunday roast, several options, well kept beer, good service, glad to see the pub back again .

First time back here since it reopened. Needs softening. Flowers on tables, take a few out to unclutter. Food good and staff very friendly. Would go back. Need to tidy up outside, didn't look open. Just little things but it would help to get people through the door.

Helpful staff member explained when I booked for Tuesday night that they serve only tapas earlier in the week. On arrival happy to be told they’d decided to serve the full menu that night - resulting in an unexpectedly excellent, keenly priced meal. Pigeon breast with beetroot purée starter, cajun spice coated chicken breast and lemon posset for me, duck breast cassoulet and a huge apple crumble with masses of vanilla custard for my pudding loving spouse. Both agreed it was hard to see how our meals could have been bettered, especially at these prices, with all 3 meats ‘just so’ - juicy and tender with good accompaniments and attentive friendly service. Having praised the food to our server he explained that the chef had cooked in Michelin restaurants - and it showed! Will definitely eat at The George again next time we are in the area!

The roast dinner I had recently was an absolute delight! The perfectly cooked roast meat was tender and flavorful, while the accompanying side dishes, such as roasted vegetables and crispy roast potatoes, were simply delicious. Chose this pub as our lunch stop on a bellringing outing - couldn't have been better! Very friendly, very accommodating, good service, delicious food (and not over-sized portions which are so common nowadays!), excellent value. Staff were great with the two dogs that were with us, too!

Gorgeous little pub, really quaint and full of character. I saw live music here and it was an outstanding evening! Great service, fantastic staff, and a clean pub inside. However, the toilets are not amazing nor particularly clean. The drinks aren't competitively priced given the small pub status, and although the food looks incredible, I would again imagine it's not particularly cheap. It's a touch balance between positives and negatives. I do recommend a visit here, but it's very local and condensed. It's not very big in size, but big in character.

Amazing evening. Friendly staff, delicious 2 for 1 cocktails and yummy food. The mac and cheese was properly cheesy!! Thoughtful things like tampons available in the loos. A singer in the evening wasn’t too imposing with a lovely voice. Will definitely be going back!

What a fantastic little pub, the staff really went above and beyond to ensure I had an amazing birthday. From fantastic staff, great ambience, and delicious food there really isn’t anything I could fault. I have a severe nut allergy and am very weary of where I eat as I have had issues with eating out in the past, so a massive well done Matt and the fantastic team!!

We thoroughly enjoyed our food - me vegan- my husband, macaroni cheese. All cooked fresh and absolutely delicious. We will definitely be visiting again. The staff were really courteous and friendly, the pub was immaculately clean. It's a ten out of ten from me.

First meal here under new management. Very wide choice of tapas style plates, all delicious. We didn't realise how generous the portions were, so slightly over ordered. There's often a free band on Friday, always been good. Give the George a try.

Popped in here on a Friday lunch with work friends and had a great chicken burger! Having not been in for a few years they have really upped their game and improved everything - the only moan would be the gent's loo (no light on and needs a refurb)

Had Sunday lunch here (21/5/23). The chicken breast was nicely cooked, the Yorkshire pudding was very tasty, the other items on my plate did not Impress. The two very small roast potatoes were like rocks, I almost bent my fork trying to get it into the parsnip and it is the first time ever that I have been served cauliflower that had burnt ends. Any trimmings such as stuffing come at additional cost. The serving and bar staff were excellent. Gents toilets could do with an upgrade and a coat of paint.
