New Management have completely turned this pub around, warm friendly and chatty staff. A lovely little new music venue that actually caters to young and old. They even offer vegan cocktails!!!! Was told by one of the new managers that live music is part of the new image now so will be back for their open mic for sure and their nachos topped off my night.

Hadn’t visited in a while, and was very much pleasantly surprised at the change. An excellent place for a tipple. Attentive, knowledgeable bar staff. Cosy, dimly lit speakeasy-vibes-place; open later than most/nearly all other places in the area. Great place to take a date or to enjoy an after work drink

Wow what a difference a new management team makes. The pub is having a much needed facelift at the moment and is shaping up to be the best little late night place to be in Brighton. Theyll soon be making coffee and tapas for the tired and hungry and be promoting local artworks and musicians on open mic nights and live bands. Just what the area needed ! Great ales Proper Job and Otter and a good selection of spirits and wine all washed down with some smooth funk and soul tunes. Well worth a visit.

A lovely wee bar situated in the heartbeat of Brighton! The service was first class, we ordered our breakfast which only took one hour to come! This was ideal as it basically covered lunch so really saved us some money! We were told that there was a new chef working and he seems to know his way around a bacon and egg sandwich knowing that perfection cannot be rushed! The Americano coffee was excellent and served at 55degrees perfect over your lap with a dash of milk from short distance. The only thing that I would say is if you are not local probably best you take a spare pair of shorts.

We all know social distancing is high priority at the moment, however when your family social bubble (since the beginning of lockdown) isn’t allowed to sit together and is told to leave is nothing short of rude! We had a small group and sat down over two tables ;social distances apart) and was rudely told to leave because WE KNEW EACH OTHER! Really!! And you wondered why the place was empty! Rude! My friend and i had enjoyed a nice evening in the pub and we lost track of time, next thing we knew we were approached by a young girl wearing glasses with no customer service skills whatsoever abruptly asking us to leave. WE were both quite shocked at the rude approach she had taken considering that we were given no prior warning that they were closing... In summary: Pretentious girl with an attitude problem ruined a good night. We shall not be returning and suggest you get some older bar staff that know how to talk to customers.

This place really lets Brighton down with its completely bland tasteless and disgusting food. It takes a complete idiot to cook a roast so badly, the chicken had no seasoning and was like rubber. The gravy was granules with granules still showing on the plate. Potatoes hard, old and flavourless. Parsnips were done in weird batter and could not eat. So disappointed to have to pay for this, the beef roast too was shocking /very sad that this place can still operate in the centre of town. However the give away was it was prime time on a Sunday and no one was in there .

I tried this place out as I had heard many good things. I was sorely dissapointed! Not only on the wait time for our food was around an hour but when the burgers and chips arrived it was as though they had been sat for a while as the grease had soaked into the buns. It was a greasy mess and the same applies to the chips. There was also a free hair in one of the chip portions! The staff weren't exactly polite either. Very dissapointed overall.

I have visited The Troll's Pantry on many occasions now and the food on my most recent visit was one of the best. A great burger, made with locally sourced, organic ingredients and high welfare grass fed meat. The ethos behind The Troll's Pantry food is good and the quality of ingredients shines through, the meat is tasty and well aged, the sauces incredible and the bun one of the best out there. All this considered though, I still can't help feel that the pricing is high, whilst the ingredients warrant a premium price, it is still too high. The food is good, the environment it is served in is anything but. What is disappointing is that the prices are going up and the portions getting smaller. I remember when the patties were 1/3 lb, now they are 1/4 lb, that is just too small. £3.50 for chips is also too expensive, almost unjustifiable. I believe the troll uses expensive olive oil to fry in, but I feel this is taking the organic ideology too far and this is in turn forcing him to price unrealistically. The environment does not do the food justice and the unfriendly bar staff, poor quality beer, loud music and surroundings overshadow the quality. The quality of the food is one part of the overall experience and they seem to be overlooking this. In the right environment I would have less of a problem paying the prices, but in a pub I just don't think it works. The problem is that I don't think it would work in a restaurant either as that's not what this food is trying to be. Perhaps in a trendy burger joint but the then the overheads would make the food unaffordable for all but those special occasions. Whilst no compromises is a great ideology, in reality it appears difficult to deliver this at the right price. I for certain could not tell the difference between this olive oil and other olive oil / vegetable / rapeseed oil. I can't help but feel that in the strive for perfection, sight of what people want has been lost and the tiny details go unnoticed. If the margins were smaller, sales would be higher and more people would eat here. A large part of their core market is being priced out, and with other good options, albeit not as good, close by perhaps pricing needs to be reconsidered. I would certainly have a burger from the troll again, but it would need to be a little bit bigger, the fries a little bit cheaper and the venue nicer. Still warrants 4 stars and I would certainty recommend for the burger and ethics alone, I just hope the pricing is reconsidered and he finds a new venue soon!

Love the burgers here, but they are extortionate and not justifiable. I ordered a burger on its own and it came to like £14 once I added cheese to it. I asked for bacon as well but that wasn't put in the burger so I thought I'd been overcharged. I hadn't - that was just the price of the burger with cheese!

I was keen to try these burgers after reading all the great reviews which were all pretty much accurate. The burgers are fabulous, albeit expensive but that's ok as I know they use the best ingredients, all ethically sourced. The fries, at extra cost were the real rip off and not that good. The restaurant is at the back of a pretty scuzzy pub just on the outskirts of town so not a great location unless you happen to live or be going out nearby. As I read in other reviews, nothing was very clean and the restaurant area looked like it needed a good wash and brush up - I hope the kitchen is cleaner! I believe they are looking for new premises which, if they find somewhere nearer to central Brighton could be great and I'm sure business will boom. I would certainly go back to eat but not while they're in the Hobgoblin pub.

Long story short: -The burgers are of a very high quality-They're more expensive than “normal fast food” but that reflects the quality of ingredients and ethics of the owner. See it as a treat, not as a regular bite to eat. -They accommodate veggies/vegans very well-The venue doesn’t suit The Troll's Pantry-The owner needs to explicitly explain why the prices are as they are. Short story long: Just in case people think this is overly positive, please note I'm writing this review of my own free will. I don't know the guy who runs The Troll's Pantry personally; I just love eating there every time I visit Brighton. I don't get a beef-based commission everytime I recommend the food here, as swell as that sounds! Now that we've got the fine print out the way...I'm going to be focusing mainly on the food for this review: The Troll's Pantry (TP) resides in the Hobgoblin, but as far as I'm aware they aren't owned by the pub itself. A few people have complained about the venue and although I like the pub for nostalgic reasons, it can be a bit grubby. Again, as far as I'm aware TP isn't owned by the pub, so they have no control over the décor/ambience/very loud music. What they can control is the quality of the food. This is where it shines. The burgers vary in ingredients from month to month with a focus on seasonality. The “Troll” responsible for the burgers has made this a crucial theme in his business, not as a bandwagon-jumping catchphrase. As such I don't usually have the same burger again with each visit, but the quality has been incredibly high in each one. Generally they tend to be extremely juicy, flavourful and messy. I've also tried the vegetarian offerings and although I preferred the meat versions, the falafel-ish patties were none the less satisfying. My sister is vegan and loved her meat/dairy free burger as well. I gotta say I'm pretty impressed by how accommodating the owner is towards different diets, even as a burger obsessive. The burgers aren't cheap. On face value this is a bad thing: after all, it'd be nice if these could be priced at 99p, right? But on the other hand, The Troll's Pantry can't bring costs down too much because so much effort goes into the burgers. All of the ingredients are as local as possible (some of which are even foraged), it pays the staff the living wage and all of the food is made from scratch. With that all said, of course it's not going to be low cost. It's a treat. I've heard the cows get a good life before being turned into Smoky Mountains as well. That's great, although its another reason you're paying a higher price. On the other hand, you're supporting as ethical a burger business as you can. It also tastes amazing. Are there any issues? The venue is loud, and it can be grubby although I'm certain TP doesn't have much of a say about this. Online the owner has mentioned a new change in venue this year/Summer so the location shouldn't be as big a problem as it used to be. In the meantime you can always take a burger to go and eat in a park under the Brighton sun/clouds! They also do street food events as well so I'm sure you could have the burger in nicer surroundings then. The price is a problem to some but I believe this is more an issue with communication than the cost. Even when listing its features (seasonal, local and ethically-sourced ingredients + living wages) on the menus, not everyone pieces together the benefits with the price. I've heard the owner justify the prices online with a passionate essay every now and again but that's mainly online, not in the restaurant except to angry customers (from what I've heard). If I have to give some constructive feedback to “The Troll” it would be to articulate his reasoning for the high prices on the menu/on a leaflet on the tables so he didn't have to explain it to each customer, 1 by 1.Of the 10+ people I've taken here over the last few years, only two have not been satisfied with the burgers and only one complained about the price/quality. Although I don't know the owner personally, he's been extremely friendly and accommodating with feedback whenever we've eaten here (my Mum complained about a vegan burger being too dry and he addressed it very quickly and professionally). Overall I think this is a fantastic burger joint that is high quality, accommodating to many allergies/diets/lifestyle changes (veggie/vegan/gluten-free) and uncompromising on it's ethics. Although I wouldn't see the last point as a deal-breaker, it's nice to know the guy's doing his bit. I don't come up to Brighton but when I do, I always eat here. That should be testament to the owner's skills and hard work. I wish the owner the best of luck because you don't always see people as passionate as food as this guy. The grub's pretty tasty as well!

I went to The Hobgoblin today for lunch, having read a favourable newspaper review. It was at peak lunchtime on a sunny day.The cavernous bar was empty-strangely empty! I asked if they were serving food and they were. Then came the shock. The menu is burgers of every description. The cheapest I could find was £8 but they went up to £12 -for a burger? But wait for it.Fries were extra and around £3 or £4.So -burger and fries from £12 to £16.Something odd here. We're not talking central Brighton or London but a fairly shabby area, and matching decor.Anyway I pushed the boat out and ate the cheapest burger in the equally cavernous (and empty) garden. There was quite loud piped music which personally I could have done without. The burger though WAS decent, and so was the pint of real ale I sampled. If they want to make a go of this I would recommend slashing the burger prices by £3 and fries by £2.Then the Troll may survive.I'm not quite sure what kind of clientelle is expected, but whatever, it wasn't in evidence today.Good luck but more realistic pricing is a must.

When I saw it would be approx £15.00 for a quarter pound smokey mountain burger and chips I thought it was way too expensive. I know they source local ingredients and make their own sauce etc. Does that matter all that much to me when having a burger and chips in a pub? No. Been here a few times for drinks but not had the food before, expectations were high but I thought I'd give it a go. The burger was cooked well and very tasty, smoky and sweet. For the price it was smaller than burgers I've had in other pubs. The sauces were nice, chips were a little greasier than expected but still fine. I wouldn't rule out eating here again but I wouldn't hurry back to do so. It's likely I'll return just for drinks. in my opinion there's other pubs doing burgers just as nice for cheaper than the Hobgoblin. Went here because loving hut was shut across road .. Was outraged that for fries they charged £4 .. and a burger is £7.50 (veggie burger that is ) They charge 50 p extra as they fry them in olive oil if your vegetarian .. WHY ?? Why not vegetable or sunflower oil And who frys in animal fat anymore anyways ? Obviously that is going to be greasy .. Punished for choosing a vegetarian option by charging a higher price NOT cool at all Burger came out and was also greasy .. the best thing was the home made ketchup which was lovely But £14 for a small veggie burger and some greasy (and I mean really greasy ) fries and a orange juice is more like Kings Road or Soho prices not the scuz end of London Road Brighton .. Liberty !!! In fact shocking ! if they are going to have the nerve to charge £4 for a few fries at least go around the place with a duster and a mop it is positively grubby and filthy , clean the windows the floor , in fact send Kim and Aggie in there ... they are clearly kind do spiders judging by the cobwebs and the dust mites are definitely squatting too .. Just because a place considers itself 'alternative' rock /goth whatever adjectives describe it should not be an excuse for not cleaning and charging extortionate prices for greasy food .. Try much harder if you have the nerve to charge this for ridiculously easy food .. At least crack open the domestos .. they should put a door mat outside the front door to wipe your feet on the way out ... you will need to

The Troll's Pantry provide me with my favourite burgers in Brighton. They are situated inside the Hobgoblin pub, which looks a bit intimidating from the outside, but once you're in, you see that it's an interesting mix of old posters, waxy bottles with candles in them, an odd musty smell in the air, and comfy wooden benches. The whole setup is a little odd, because there are two companies being talked about here, I think - the Hobgoblin and Troll's Pantry. I don't think TP sells drinks... you won't find milkshakes, etc on their menu. I've had a couple of beers here with burgers and they are served in plastic beakers, which is weird.... but that's Hobgoblin's issue, not TP! TP's burgers are quite simply... exquisite. They are made from organic, locally sourced, home made, high quality ingredients. They make their own sauces from scratch; you'll find sauces containing roasted beetroot and other such wonderful things. They do the currently-trendy thing of wrapping your burger in paper and serving it on a metal tray, which I'm not ashamed to say that I love. Their buns are shiny, salty, and delicious. They serve their burgers pink, which I am always pleased to report. They cook their onions in dripping and bacon fat, which sounds wrong, but it's oh-so-right. They don't really have regular dishes (the menu changes all the time), so it's hard to recommend things, but to be honest, I don't think you could be disappointed if you are a burger buff. Their sides are amazing also - they have gravy fries and peppercorn sauce fries, etc. So good and great for sharing. I've not tried them but they also have a great (seriously, they look AMAZING) selection of vegan and vegetarian burgers. From their website: We use small local farms who practice the highest standards of animal welfare We use local, seasonal, and organic produce whenever it is available We only use non-GMO ingredients All our disposables are sustainably sourced and fully compostable We have a zero-waste kitchen We make all our sauces, pickles, and pretty much everything else from scratch And... Below is a selection of our burgers past and present. We have around four burgers on our menu at a time which changes weekly depending on what ingredients are available or when the Troll has sudden idea for a new flavour combination. An example burger... With our signature stinky sauce, made with Brighton blue cheese and Langham's Hip Hop beer, this evolution sits on a bed of crisp, organic new season mixed leaves full of peppery and mustard flavours and a good dollop of our homemade smoked garlic mayonnaise. This springtime version is topped with our own pickled onions.

Me and my boyfriend decided to go here because we'd heard the burgers were amazing. It was our first time here so we asked one of the bar staff how to go about ordering food. She was very rude and sarcastic, making us feel quite uncomfortable. We thought it might have just been one rude member of staff, but when we went up to order all the girls at the bar were equally ignorant and rude- they were more interested in their gossip than actually doing their job. When the food arrived it all looked quite nice, but the burger was almost impossible to eat, completely contradicting what it says on the website about being designed to eat without plates and cutlery. It was also incredibly expensive, we payed £40.40 for two burgers, two portions of chips and two lemonades. To top it all off, the music was way too loud, and the lights were dimmed so much it was impossible to even see what we were eating. We left without finishing our food as we just wanted to get out. For the reviews that this place gets, it was such a let down.

By recommendation of a friend, my boyfriend and I decided to eat there on a Sunday night for dinner to try their burgers. To start, the service was poor and there was a long wait for food. The bar staff seemed disinterested in anything apart from gossiping between themselves. When the burgers and fries finally came, we were amazed at the amount of grease on them. The fries were good and had a good amount of cheese and bacon on them. The burgers on the other hand were nothing to write home about. The vegetables in the burger were incredible, but apart from that you couldn't taste anything else. And considered the menu highlighted that the burger was known for its sauces and cheeses, you couldn't taste them. I won't be going back and the vegetables in the burger are what save this pub from a poor review. Perhaps if you wanted to try a vegi burger it would be a different story.

Love the Trolls Pantry, the burgers are great. That said, the pub in which it is located is quite literally one of the worst pubs in Brighton. Despite living almost directly above it, I have been avoiding The Hobgoblin pub for months now. The staff are unbelievably rude, to a consistency I find almost impressive (turnover seems high yet the rudest young girls seem to be hired constantly). Brighton has a thriving pub culture, so pubs should be doing their upmost to stay competitive. However, The Hobgoblin need to sort out their staffing (Kit I assume you're still in charge of hiring people, please sort it out). The place alienates more custom than it would probably believe, and it's all down to the terrible service. Not only are the girls behind the bar very rude, they're also inadequate as bar staff. Rudeness can be overlooked if the service is quick and on point, but these girls are terrible at remembering customers, or remembering who's in line, or generally getting the job done in a quick and timely manner. Simple stuff really. Having worked a good few pubs and cocktail bars over my time, I know what decent service entails. This pub is lacking on almost every front. Nothing against the Trolls Pantry, the food is great and when in direct contact with the kitchen staff they've always been helpful and polite.... But dear god please relocate, I am going back to my ongoing boycott of this awful pub.

I've always loved the Trolls pantry, although I can't help but miss the burgers they did at the start of their journey. The ability to serve them a little pink made a real difference, but they are still up there with the best burgers in town. Smoky Mountain is my favourite.

I went with my friend for a burger as she recommended this place to me. We ordered two classic burgers with cheese (8,95£ each) with some sauces and some fries. We paid at the till and got our drinks and then sat at the back area. While seated, I saw a poster on the wall saying that every Sunday you can double up your burger for free. As it was a Sunday, I went back to the bar and told the girl. Our burgers were already ready and the chef wasn't allowed to "leave the burger under the hot light" while cooking the added free one. When we asked what he'd have suggested (don't know..maybe some fries instead of something else?), he replied very rude and told us to "PAY MORE ATTENTION WHEN WE PLACE THE ORDER". Really?? Maybe then your manager should put poster AT THE BAR and not in the area at the back.It was obviously the bartender's fault as she didn't even mention to us the offer, but the chef could have been more reasonably and polite and maybe offered us something else instead.Food was great, the best burger I've had in Brighton. Very very tasty. Such a shame that you pay 7.95£ for a burger as big as McDonald's cheeseburger. Fries not even included in the price..... You need to either reconsider your price list or your portions.

I visited The Troll's Pantry (which is part of The Hobgoblin pub) for an early evening meal having read some interesting TripAdvisor reviews and looking at their website. The locally sourced, non-GMO, organic, sustainable ingredients all sounded good.So I ordered a pint and sat down to decide what to order ... in the end I decided on the Merchant burger (1/4lb rather than 1/2lb) and a side of meaty fries with their homemade smoked garlic mayo & honey & APA mustard. The burger was REALLY tasty and the fries crisp and freshly cooked.Would I Return? DEFINITELY!

I've eaten dozens of trolls pantry burgers over the years and I haven't had a single one that doesn't deliver massive flavour! The menu this guy puts together is seasonal, local and all prepared on site - although you pay for it in price it's worth every penny to know what is going in between your bun. The fries are delicious, as are adornments they put into their burgers (sauces, relishes, veg, bacon, cheese etc.).I just wish they had their own premises.... Whilst I like the hobgoblin - I feel the trolls pantry need it's own place to really express itself in further dishes or burger flavours. I try to go as often as possible for a guilt free burger treat. Keep up the amazing work

On this occasion I picked a burger up, having been recommended by several people to give this place a visit.I order the 'nightfire' burger with a portion of beef dripping fries, and it has to be from the first bite to last one of the best burgers around. Every bite was incredible and my only regret was not doubling up! I'd never had beef dripping fries before either, and they were wonderful as well.Going by the website, this place features about 25 hand crafted burgers that alternate into the menu as the seasons change. Personally I can not wait to try the 'Shaman' burger, which has been added this week!A definite strong contender to the mighty Burger Bro's!

It is by far, the rudest, most insulting visit at any pub in Brighton. Will NEVER go back. Went for burgers tonight (22/10/15) with friends. I ordered a beer, they ordered soda waters with lime (no alcohol). With this we ordered a burger each, then went outside to wait for our food. After approximately 15 minutes a bouncer came by, asking for our IDs. Two of us of showed ours whereas the third person (turning 30 in a weeks time) didn't bring his. In a very hostile manner, the bouncer tried to escort us out , even though we explained we had paid for drinks and food (and that the 30 year old, who was the only one without ID, was drinking a non-alcoholic drink). We even asked to speak to the manager, but the bouncer refused us, saying we had to wait outside. Our food came out during the discussion (the girl who brought the food was the only nice person we met during this whole visit), but we were still forced to leave. Then the manager showed up, and after listening to what we had to say she told us we had to leave and that they would give us a refund for the food but not the drinks. She said she would give me a plastic mug for my beer, to which I asked whether she expected me to take my 3/4 full beer to a restaurant (it was past 9). She pretty much threw me a plastic glass to pour it in. Whilst my friends were expressing their complaints about paying for a meal that they were not allowed to eat, she simply walked off. When they caught up, she said that customers didn't have to show ID when buying non-alcoholic drinks and that's why we could order drinks earlier. Obviously this is not true, as we were forced to leave. During this whole time, the bouncer stayed next to us and walked us out as if we were criminals. He did not leave our side for one second. I will NEVER go back.

Having set a goal to find the Best Burger in Brighton, it took me some time to cross compare the most well reputed burger eateries in town. The Troll's Pantry delivers an exciting array of different burgers that often change dependant on seasonal availability of ingredients. Thematically named with examples including 'The Imperial Shadow' or 'The Burning Crusader', the composition of each burger has been thoroughly considered, with each bite being a tantalising mix of umame, sweetness and spice. Admittedly pricey, they are nonetheless worth the asking price. In terms of the establishment, The Hobgoblin pub itself also has an excellent selection of well kept beers and seemingly policy of only employing young, attractive female bar staff. Despite the gents toilets often being in a disgusting condition, the beer garden at the back is a great place to chill out with friendsHighly recommended.

I'm disappointed to report that my experience with Troll's Pantry burgers is somewhat hit and miss. Whenever I've eaten there at the weekend when it's busy, the food has been absolutely top notch, and worth every single penny. Legit competition for Brighton's incomparable Burger Brothers, I dare say. But my two recent midweek visits left one heck of a lot to be desired. On both occasions we seemed to be the only people in the place eating, and the burgers not only came out dripping in tepid fat, but the buns were burnt and the meat had a weird but distinct lack of flavour. The unbelievably tasty 'Stinky Breath' burger that I had fallen in love with two weeks previously suddenly tasted like the kind of thing you'd pay £3 for from the side of a van at 3am. I couldn't believe it was the same establishment. The meat is ethically and locally sourced, and the large buzzing beer garden is one of the finest in Brighton, but it's tough to truly recommend a place with a 50% success rate.My advice? Go at the weekend, and you should be served a meal to remember.

Yes, it is expensive but you're paying for locally sourced, gm free ingredients and a LIVING wage for the kitchen staff. If you want cheap and [un]cheerful go to McDonalds. To the people moaning about the price, the waiting time or the ginger chef - whatever - you should learn to recognise quality when it passes your lips.Yes, the food isn't cheap, but it's not far off what you'd pay at Five Guys, Honest Burger etc. The difference with the Troll is that you're getting the results of passion, obsessiveness even, and the refusal to do something the easier/cheaper/quicker way.We went for the classic Imperial - everything from the meat to the bun to the cheese to the pickles to the way the lettuce was cut was excellent. The meat was like little pieces of melty heaven. The bread soft and yielding but with just enough chew. The pickles and salad were the perfect balance to the rich meaty goodness. The fries were of a clearly higher standard than equivalent high-end burger places. If you want cheap and fast, go to Maccy Ds. If you want a proper burger, go to the Troll.

Having read good things about it we decided to give it a go. Ordered 2 burgers £11.95 each. I was expecting a good feast as we paid like for good dining. After exactly 50 minutes waiting time little sandwich like a burger arrived.Inside little piece of meat full of fat all over the bun for which we had to wait bang on 50 minutes !!!Nearly 1 hour waiting time for a burger and they were not even busy in there. We spoke to stuff and not received an apology for waiting. Its not a rocket science to make a burger but for the ginger cook working there it must be a massive challenge.I had plenty of burgers in my life and this one is way down at the bottom place, not mentioning high price, terrible service and stuff who has no customer service skills whatsoever.Totally disappointed, and whoever give that place more then half a star, I believe has no idea what a good burger looks and tastes like.Enjoy your experience in Troll's Pantry, we left the place still hungry and extremely disappointed.

The Troll's Pantry burgers and fries are delicious. They are expensive though, so don't expect to be eating on the cheap. I've heard so much about the Troll's pantry burgers ("best in Brighton" etc) and finally got to try one on Friday night. The garden was full to bursting so we sat inside the pub (DJ playing v loud music & a student-y vibe; fine with me). My partner had the Palladin & I had the Stinky Breath (I think I have remembered that right!) - oh, and a portion of fries too. The verdict? Absolutely delicious, and worth what felt like quite a long 30+ minute wait (although the waitress said people arriving after us would have a much longer wait). The meat was cooked to perfection, the buns were fab and the various toppings were spot on. The fries were about the best I've had anywhere. So, are they the best in Brighton? That's a tough one - I still think that Burger Brothers pips them to that particular post - but BB don't do fries and you can't sit down with a beer to eat them so it's a different eating experience. Expensive burgers but still highly recommended!

You can't fault these burgers - except maybe that after you've finished, you immediately want another one. Top-quality, local ingredients and great attention to detail right down to the sauces means absolutely brilliant burgers every time, with fantastic chunky chips to boot. The bar venue isn't anything special, but as long as it's relatively dry out, the beer garden is one of the nicer spots in Brighton to enjoy a drink. Our only complaint is that while a focus on a few great menu options means great quality food, somewhere along the way, the world's best chilli cheese fries got axed from the choices. If there's an online campaign to bring them back, we'll be the first to join up.

Troll's has long been at the top of the Brighton burger charts but for me has now begun to slip. 6 months ago it was still pricey yet tasted like you'd expect for its worth: absolutely stunning. Now, the price has remained (? even gone up), the choice in the menu is less, the flavour lacking its previous depth, and the texture slightly tough. Perhaps they're experimenting? Which is good to do because it's always a good thing to try to improve; however I hope some of the older elements return. Trouble is, to give it another go I won't be willing to pay £12.

I have been a very regular customer of Troll's since it settled in to the Hobgoblin and always relied on it for delivering consistently outstanding burgers. I consider their burgers to be the best I've had anywhere in the world, with only Burger Brothers (also in Brighton) coming even close (although always a firm second to Troll's the King). The venue (Hobgoblin pub) is a bit grimy and on the wrong side of town for me but always totally worth it for the utter perfection of a Troll's burger.I visited last night and on arrival was a bit nervous to see the revamped menu. I was always a big fan of the plain-ish cheeseburger as it exposed the natural wonder of the meat and allowed you to bask in the perfection of the basic components (melt in the mouth beef patty, fall apart soft bun and St Giles cheese).Last night there were only 3 burger options and all were very compounded by strong flavour additons (eg onion/garlic sauce or one of the originals - Stinkybreath which comes with strongly flavoured sauces (anchovy, blue cheese etc)). Also there was quite a steep increase in price to £11.95 for each burger. I ordered the Swinehead (which seemed the least adulterated) which came with onion & garlic sauce and cheese. It was still delicious but seems like the wonderful flavour of the meat was overpowered a bit by the additions.I would have loved a 'no nonsense' cheeseburger exactly as they were before and would have been happy to pay the increased price for it as they were totally worth it. I know The Troll reviews the menu regularly and takes constructive comments seriously so I hope that we will once again be given the option of enjoying the Troll's experience in its purest form (and happy to pay a premium for it but not so for an adulterated burger)

I'd wanted to try The Trolls Pantry back in the old days when it operated out of a van, but never made it there before they'd sold out. Having heard from friends nothing but good things about these burgers, my expectations were high. Service was good, the food arrived quickly (one burger was missing, bar staff had not got the order quite right, but this was quickly rectified) We tried each of the burgers they had on offer (I believe a Hunter, Imperial Shadow and a Fireball) All three were delicious and juicy. Very tasty indeed. If you're a fan of good burger, then you need to come and try these. The Trolls Pantry is run from The Hobgoblin pub, which is a bit dark and dingy of a Saturday afternoon, but I like dark and dingy. And it was perfectly clean. Decent beers, seemed child friendly enough in the daytime. The burgers were quite expensive (around £10 each) but they state they have no GMO, pay their staff above the living wage, locally source their ingredients, they use small local farms and they make most stuff from scratch. So well worth paying a bit extra for eh?The fries were good too. (This was probably the reason we came. One of my party wanted fries and the other good burger place in Brighton doesn't do fries - or pints)

I previously gave the trolls pantry a pretty poor review on the basis that we couldn't get served a burger as one of our party had no ID. Nevertheless, the owner replied with some 'reasons' why this was the case and we gave it another go.The bar staff this visit firstly were far better, and were informed there was a new manager which was probably the reason why. The three of us ordered a double patty burger, 'stinky fries' and a soft drink. The wait wasn't too bad considering the place was packed and all the tables full. The Burger - The burger is up there with the best I've tried including many 'trendy' London burger establishments. My only gripe and I believe there is a reason for this is that it'd be nice to have them medium rare and not well done. Perhaps the owner could explain the reason why (which I believe is fully out of his hands). Apart from this it was hot and tasted great. The fries were also very good.Price - A double burger, stinky fries and a coke cost £24. Bear in mind 3 of us ordering that's just shy of £75 which is bordering on unaffordable to a lot of people. I completely get what the owners trying to do with a zero waste kitchen, paying staff the living wage etc but there comes a point where people will struggle to justify paying that much for essentially a burger and chips in a pretty grimy venue on London Road. It's highly commendable to make everything from scratch but I believe the value has to be there for the customer and perhaps £24 is a little too high. Most customers like myself are however happy to pay that bit extra for what the owner is trying to achieve.Overall - A great burger, there's no denying it. You'd struggle to find a better one in Brighton (although perfection would be the option of medium rare). They also seem to have sorted out the long waiting times. The only issue would be the price and although there are valid reasons for these high prices, it does border on unaffordable.

There is much competition in Brighton but I do believe this is the best burger on offer. I had my first when I first moved here (around three years ago) when he was still operating out of a van, I have had one from a Troll's Pantry street vendor around Christmas time and even one at the pub in Hove (although admittedly, that was slightly inferior to the others.) They are consistently a taste sensation and you can feel ever so slightly self-righteous when you eat one because they are organically sourced and whatnot. The chips are also very good and the ever-changing menu is a delight! The service is decent and whilst it is slightly more expensive than your average burger, you pay for quality. On my birthday I took a flight from Germany to visit my girlfriend who was taking a business language course at Brighton. After quite some research on the internet beforehand, it was clear to me, that I had to taste one of the legendarry Troll's Burgers. Right after entering the Hobgoblin, we had to head to the backyard garden, because of the smell and loudness inside.I took the chance to try an Original Smoky Mountain and my vegetarian girl friend chose a Geae's Bounty variety. Although we had to order the non-meat stuff inside including the fries, what consumed quite some time because the pub staff was not the fastest, the Troll himself took care of the synchronised serving by asking the inside kitchen via phone to signal when that order would be almost ready. He himself was working on the grill outside.I promise, that burger was the best I ever had! Try the Troll's burgers if at all possible!Even my girl friend said, that she would order that vegetarian patty again!! (Happens very seldom.)The only downfall was, that I wanted to wash my greasy hands and the pubs restroom did not have any soap. That is certainly not the Trolls fault, but is an absolute no go for any place.Despite that, try the burgers, don't care about the pub itself and only go straight through to the garden, these burgers might be the best you ever get!(And the prices are absolutely fair considering where the ingrediens come from..)
