Surprised at some of the negative reviews. Have eaten here a number of times lately ( lunches ) and have always received excellent service. Always been made welcome , drinks served promptly and any queries about the food promptly answered or explained. The food has always been well cooked and well presented. Special mention for their Prawn and Chorizo Linguine, one of the tastiest I have eaten, our party will certainly keep returning. Lovely home brewed pint available. Well done to all the staff.

We have been going to this pub for a long time but unfortunately it’s going downhill. The food has always been lovely (a little overpriced for what it is) but of late the place could do with a really good clean (as another recent review has said). The service is also going down hill - currently there are a lot of vacancies and new staff - during a recent visit our starters and mains all came together and we were told they couldn’t take the mains back as the would get cold! We were offered a free desert but didn’t want that after eating two courses together - there was apparently no way to discount or refine any food! I hope that things improve as this was, and could be a lovely place.

Went for Sunday Lunch last week, absolutely shocking, tasteless, 2 small bits of beef that by the texture must have been cooked the day before, cauliflower cheese (extra charge) was the only redeeming feature. Children’s meals have shrunk in size so bad that my son asked for a Mcdonalds on the way home. Desserts way overpriced and puddings, could not tell which was sticky toffee and which was syrup, completely tasteless Have not been here for a while, used to be pretty good food. You can’t charge inflated prices for cheap frozen food, shame as it’s such a lovely pub, great for kids and has so much potential. Def won’t be back sorry

We were seated next to the soft play area as we had kids with us. There was no-one serving in the soft play area, only in the main bar. We had to search for staff, first to confirm the reserved tables were ours, and after more waiting, we had to search for someone to take our order. On a Sunday evening at 5.30pm, there were neither roast dinners nor steaks to be had. The choice was burgers, scampi, veggie food or pies. I made the mistake of choosing a burger. A decent wait later, I received a flat piece of charcoal in a bun. Completely inedible. I was with friends who were paying for the meal and didn’t feel able to complain. Fortunately, the burger came with bacon, so I had a bacon roll with chips. The chips were good, but they get no points for that. We had to ask for cutlery as there was none in the room. Still waiting for napkins. Hoping they might redeem themselves with dessert, I chose a sticky toffee pudding. I received a uniform mound of pudding with custard, which I assume came pre-made because it could have been any sponge pudding. Its redeeming feature is that it had sugar in it, so it was definitely dessert. I’ve had better food in worse pubs and can safely say this is the most disappointing meal of my life.

I haven’t been to this resistant for a few years, but the food and environment used to always be lovely. Sadly, this wasn’t the case when I came here with my young family for a meal. We arrived and noticed the floor covered in water, no dry spots to be seen. A member of staff quickly came out and said mind the water, they have a leak. There was no wet floor sign or buckets for the constant dripping water. We sat in the children’s barn near the entrance away from the open fire exit door that leads straight onto the car park. As a parent of children that are a flight risk this was worrying. The open door wasn’t barricades off in anyway. We went for the £10 kids play and eat. The size portion was shocking. Two small sausages, a handful of chips and some beans. My eldest and youngest were both still hungry after eating this. My youngest (who has recently had surgery) slipped and hit his head and foot and was quite upset. That was when I noticed the floor in the play barn was soaking too. Again no wet for sign or buckets for catching the water. You could see the drips from the ceiling. My son was covered in dirty brown smelly water. It was disgusting. There was no one in the play barn attending so I mentioned it to the man behind the main bar, all he said was the roof is leaking. No apology or asking if not son is ok. Didn’t even turn to face me. I mentioned there is no wet floor sign, he shrugged his shoulders. Absolutely shocking behaviour! Soon after the waitress came to collect plates, she slipped a little on the floor. I pointed out the floor and drips saying be careful the floor is soaking wet and mentioned my son falling over. Again no apology, just said the roof has been like that for ages now. She came back with a floor sign. The lack of care and acknowledgment was really poor. What used to be a lovely place to visit has really gone downhill. Don’t waste your time or money.

We had booked for a two-night stay and arrived in time for Sunday lunch. Despite being 5 miles from Barry itself the pub was packed, and remained so until about 20.00. There are a number of areas for families and children. Despite that, we were able to find a quiet spot in the bar and enjoy a lovely Sunday lunch. Our two night stay was very comfortable, the breakfasts were good and the Real Ale excellent, if a little expensive at £5.20 per pint. This was compensated by the reasonably priced food. We would return definitely!

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We were looking forward to visiting today. Unfortunately, we came away feeling a little fustraited and confused. We had a table booked and we sat where the soft play area was. First impressions were not great, but hoped it would get better. The staff in the main bar were miserable and the most unhelpful. Our party decided we would make our orders but we paid separately. We were reassured we would all have our meals together. We were also told there may be a slight delay in the food. Upon paying we were asked for a tip on the card machine before service, we gave you the benifit of the doubt we gave a little but had we known the service we were about the recieved then I would have not bothered like the staff were not bothered with us. The children went off to play, and the indoor play area was a hit! Only a few adults had starters so they came, a nice enough lady brought the food. While we had the starters, strangely meals came out for our party - when I asked why they brought out a order when it was all meant to come out together. The gentleman (I believe his name was Tom) clearly didn't want to know when I questioned the meals not coming together, he did not look at me and responded with 'it is all coming now' but we were still eating starters. So we were not ready? But then the meals didn't come out for a further 20 minutes after the starters were finished. We found it very rude and very unprofessional on how it was dealt with. It was poor reassurance with poor execution. Again, the ladies delivering the mains were amazing with friendly manners. The main meals were basic, cold and generally not great. Presentation was poor and food didn't look as good as you advertise. Food is hugely overpriced; even the children's meal was underwhelming. I had the gammon and it was awful. The gammon and egg was over cooked, the peas were old. It was 1.45pm and we were told we had 15 minutes to leave the table. Our plates were literally just cleared due to the delay on their behalf, not ours. I said why so? They booked the table out again. But 2 hours just isn't enough for a party of our size. I asked that we were waiting for the children's desert and he didn't seem overly happy - even though it was ordered with all the main meals. Ice cream came and we felt we were not welcome so we moved seats. There was no thank you from our server Tom. In general, there was a huge lack of communication skills, bar staff that were miserable and unhelpful and it didn't feel like a warm and welcoming environment with (mostly) unfriendly staff with a 'I don't care' attitude. It is a shame, as the restaurant, facilities and children's play area was great. Unfortunately, we will not be returning.

Before looking at the menu I went to the bar to order drinks, got served by a very rude gentleman. I ordered 2 Diet Pepsi (on pump) and they tried charging me £8!! I thought he was actually joking and laughed and asked again how much, he replied “£8, I don’t make the prices up” and then asked another guy behind the bar to which he confirmed was £8.I couldn’t bring myself to pay this price, so I walked out knowing it probably costs 30 pence a pint! What annoys me more is it was “eat out to help out” which does include soft drinks!! So they are charging £4 a pint of Pepsi and claiming money back on it!!Very rude staff and I would not recommended what so ever, no wonder they were quiet!

Visited The Three Horseshoes on Bank Holiday Monday. It was quite busy, although not full and there were empty tables. We waited at the bar to be seated (we’d booked a table) where there was a member of staff writing in a notebook. She was an older lady, dark hair and glasses. We stood in front of her for a good while and she didn’t even look up and acknowledge us, so it wasn’t the best of starts. Eventually a young girl came to take us to our table, which had obviously been given to another family. The girl went to speak to the older lady who really didn’t seem like she could be bothered and then tried to sit us at a able for 2 people, 3 at a maximum. There were 5 of us. When we explained we’d booked for 5 she advised that 3 could sit along one edge of the table on the bench. There was no way you could have fitted 2 people there let alone 3 so we asked for another table. The girl was extremely stroppy and rude and was very unhappy that we dared point out that the table wasn’t suitable but did take us to a larger table, barking that I needed to pick up the menu to take with us. We sat and waited for 15 minutes, with no one coming to take our order, so I went to ask if we needed to order at the bar. Was told someone would be over shortly. After another 15 minutes no one came so I went to find a member of staff. I asked another girl if she could take our order to be told (again very very stroppy and rude) that she wouldn’t as she was doing the kitchen and that I should go and find someone else. I found another girl and explained we’d already been waiting half an hour and was told she’d find someone to come to us. Eventually after 45 minutes a really nice polite young girl with long blonde hair came and took our order. She was very apologetic, took the order and said there would be a bit of a wait. Eventually after over an hour our food arrived. I cannot complain about the food, they were very generous portions, well cooked and warm. We were a bit disappointed as previously the three horse shoes did the most amazing home made chips and chicken curry and now seem to have swapper to frozen fries, however it was still ok. After finishing they collected our plates very quickly but took 20 minutes to bring the bill. We had to ask twice. We understand that they may have been short staffed, but it really isn’t an excuse for the staff to be so blatantly rude and stroppy, it was terrible and made us feel very uncomfortable. I spoke to a family in another table who said the staff had been equally rude to them an they had waited 2 hours for food as well. Such a shame as it used to be such a nice place to go. Looking at the recent reviews we aren’t the only ones who have had the same experience.

We’ve been coming here as a family for years as the kids love the play area outside. £80 bill and the kids didn’t even touch their food, stale burgers and chemical tasting nuggets. Staff members didn’t seem to care “not my problem” and when spoke to the manager “we don’t give refunds” why would anyone let children go hungry, no mention of change of meal or anything. The place was full of wasps and staff seemed to be grumpy with customers. How can you have a no “no refund policy” but have to pay for meals upfront.

Went with mother and 1 year old for lunch and although the food was good the drinks were overpriced, the coffee was awful and at £3 a small cup came from an 80s filter coffee of which there was only 1 option with UHT milk. The staff were fairly grumpy and overall was a disappointment.

Four of us pre- booked a lunch time meal here with high hopes as it had been recommended by a family member who had been a few months prior. When we arrived there was a queue in the entrance of people waiting to be seated. After waiting 10 minutes with no member of staff seating anyone, despite walking past us all multiple times. Sick of waiting, we entered the restaurant and asked if we could sit ourselves as no one had showed us our tables and it was plenty of tables available. The member of staff we asked was very rude and abrupt, foreshadowing the behaviour which all the staff members would possess during our visit. In fairness, our meals came fairly quickly and food was very nice. No qualms there. However once we’d finished eating/ drinking our dishes and glasses were quickly snatched up from the table with not as much as a grunt. We were hoping to order more drinks, and desert but were left waiting at the table with no one coming to serve us. Tried getting attention of 2 staff members which blatantly ignored us. I would understand if they were extremely busy, but there was literally only 6 tables that needed serving. Seemed to be plenty of staff, but they clearly couldn’t be bothered to provide any type of service. We could hear other tables complaining too. We were gobsmacked with the rude behaviour of the staff, I have never experienced anything like it. First and last visit here, which seems a shame as the pub itself is very quaint and food was really good. Would not recommend.

Took our autistic son there , he’s very fussy over what he drinks. A member of staff said he couldn’t have his own drink so we explained the situation (we were paying for drinks and food) the drink was taken off my son and we were asked to leave. Not disabled friendly at all and for some reason the staff are very aggressive and rude. Lots of better places for children to go to especially disable children as other places accommodate special needs. Will never visit again neither our family and friends.

6 of us just had a meal at this place. The service was poor - they forgot my drink and then when our meals arrived they’d forgotten my 3 year old daughter’s meal. Twice we had to chase staff around for things they’d forgotten. Staff were miserable and not at all friendly or apologetic. Now onto the meals - they are substandard and well over priced. My daughter had a bowl of chewy pasta in a very bland tomato sauce, which she only managed about 2 mouthfuls of. I had crispy beef noodles but it tasted like they had a emptied a whole bottle of sweet chilli sauce onto it. It was edible but sickly. 2 of our parry ordered the ribs and although there was a decent amount of meant on them they were tasteless. The only good meal was my mother’s gourmet burger.Really disappointed as it has such potential to be a nice family pub and has a great indoor and outdoor play area. I also feel aggrieved at having to pay £3.00 each for my children to play in the soft play area, despite us paying to eat there. Will not be returning any time soon.

I am beyond disgusted and devastated with what has happened this afternoon. I took Theo to the Three Horse Shoes to play and have food, we couldn’t sit in the play area so had to pop in and out to check on the kids. A young girl walks in to the restaurant and shouted across everybody “who’s kid got a pink top on” that being my son I rushed to the play area and asked what he had done and there was the manager shouting at my son. He then announced in front of everybody in the play area that Theo was BANNED (a 3 year old child) from there and wasn’t welcome back in. He then shouted at me telling me Theo had spat and told people to “F Off” (which I do not condone and would never although Theo doesn’t say F off and never has) at this point everybody in the play area was watching me, the manager made me take off my shoes and climb the play area to go and remove Theo from there. I told Theo off as any parent would if their child had misbehaved and Theo couldn’t have been more apologetic, he apologised to kids parents and the manager. The manager looked at us in disgust and told me never to bring him back and he isn’t aloud back in. My son was so embarrassed and upset which broke my heart, like I said I don’t condone bad behaviour from my child but kids will be kids Theo is 3 years old. I walked out to go get our stuff and leave, the manager then approached me and asked if I ordered food which I answered him and said “yes but we’re leaving now” he shook his head and tutted at me and told me he will make sure I’m not aloud back in either as I’m rude (all because I was leaving when we were not welcomed anymore) I had mums coming up to me asking me if I was ok because they could tell I was so humiliated, my son struggles so much with his behaviour which we are getting help for. I rang them to make a complaint when I got home to be shouted at down the phone by a man who was so rude, when I told him about Theo’s struggles she still didn’t apologise and said oh well he told me to F off (he didn’t because I was obviously there) once I told him I would share this to Facebook he was apologising. So just a warning to anyone who’s children suffer with behaviour problems autism etc do not take your children there as they will not be welcome or understood and you will be humiliated for your child being slightly different.

She told me to go and find another member of staff who would be a holding a clip board to sort out a table...I am not in the habit of putting up with being spoken to like s### or chasing staff around for a drink...so we left!

This was the 3rd visit for us and we brung family members who have not been before as every visit we have made here the food as been AMAZING.. we always spend a lot of money here on drinks and food and this week we ordered a sunday dinner that we have had before at 6:20pm.. when the food came out it was missing over half the items, no parsnips, no stuffing, no broccoli and only 2 patatos with some meat. When i complained at the bar for paying full price for half the meal we had only last week we got a rude response and was told "well i dont deal with the food i only work at the bar!" I said well can you atleaat go get me someone who does deal with food. A lady then came out and basically said yes we have run out of a lot of things what do you expect ordering gone 7pm in the evening ill just take £5 off the meals for you but did u still eat it?! Yet they still take last orders for food till 8pm!? If we was told they had ran out of most of the stuff we would of ordered something different and didnt except such a rude response when we was spending decent money for half the food we have received previously without being told first! This attitude and experience as put us all off returing and its a shame because the food itself is beautiful shame the staff cant have the same standards!

Visited for lunch with our 3 year old on a Tuesday. Place was busy, but service was reasonable and food good size, tasty portions. We then moved on into indoor soft play area which was quiet and well laid out. Understandably, no alcohol allowed. Can imagine it would be very busy in school holiday time.

Called in mid-afternoon for a quick bite before visiting the Christmas lights at Dyffryn. It was a busy place even at this odd time for eating. Obviously very family-friendly, plenty of youngsters around. We just had simple main course each which were fine, typical pub food with chips - all fine, nothing special. Service was friendly. We would visit again to try some more varied dishes.

I’ve been visiting the three horseshoes since I was a child with my family. Today we had my children’s’ 3rd party here, yet again another excellent experience. The children played in the fantastic and safe soft play while the adults were able to catch up with a great selection of drinks including hot drinks. Food was to the high standard we have come to expect from here. The staff very friendly and helpful. I cannot recommend this pub enough. Thank you for a stress free and exceptional time today for our special occasion.

Very friendly pub set in the country, all staff were helpful with a great play area for kids. Not a great selection of smooth beer. Our lunch was very good and value for the price, but it was served only warm at best and not hot the plates were cold as well. The meal its self was fine but would have a lot better hot, the roast pots for my liking could have been roasted for longer.

Just found out this pub allows dogs in certain areas, so have started to use it for meals, as I'm not much of a drinker. Since I was last there the menu has been revamped with some nice vegetarian and vegan options. They serve food all day and it's very tasty and with big portions. I had a Glamorgan burger with chips, which was delicious and cost 10.99. They could do with a bell in the back bar to attract the attention of staff, who are mostly preoccupied with the bigger bar, but all staff were very friendly and efficient. There's also a play-barn, with tables so that families can eat there while their children play - must be a godsend for them! Also a garden with play area out the back and another garden at the front of the pub, and on a summer's day it's packed. They've done a lot of work inside the pub and the toilets are brand new and very clean, with separate facilities for disabled patrons and for baby-changing. There's a TV in the back bar where they show sports, such as during the Rugby World Cup, where they welcomed fans early in the morning and did coffees and breakfasts. There's ample parking and the area is quiet and rural. The focus of the pub is on food and families and they do those things very well. Nice to get a dog biscuit for the dog as I left. Will be back.

Having stayed at this place overnight we had the rest of Sunday at leisure and decided to remain for a Sunday Roast. After an unhurried breakfast, punctuated by roars of appreciation from the locals as Wales trounced Australia in a rugby World Cup match, we lingered until lunch. The roast we enjoyed was simply fantastic. It’s the best roast lamb I’ve ever had, the meat coming from a neighbouring field. Portions were generous and the vegetables were well prepared with a delicious gravy. Yorkshire pudding and stuffing accompany every roast which is a nice touch. The pub itself is friendly and the busyness - popular with local residents - is testament to the value for money offered by the pub. Thanks for a lovely meal !

My wife and i travelled down to stay for a few days . As soon as we walked in the Host Richard asked if we had eaten so that the chef could stay a little later to cook. We had fabulous burgers &chips. Our room was clean and the beds were soft and comfortable. My wife loves a soak in the bath and she was very happy to do so here. The friendly staff were always helpful and we soon felt welcome. The full English breakfast was great and filling. All our boxes were ticked and we would definitely recommend it to anyone who comes to this area to stay. Thank you all at The Three Horseshoes, Barry, S.Wales.

Very disappointing experience overall… Worst was the food we ordered, my wife and I had the halloumi cheese and red peppers in white baguettes… The rolls were hard and stale plus the halloumi was frozen wrapped in bread crumbs tasting nothing like the real cheese and the peppers were so small they were almost none exsistant…

Pleasant efficient staff. Extremely expensive non alcoholic drinks with two bottles of Stella 0.0 amounting to £9.30 for just over a pint. Not inclusive or good for the hospitality sector. This is nearly a 7 times mark up on the £1.50 retail price. Marstons claim this to be competitive, but Cedar Tree Farm has Heineken 0.0 on draught for £4.65
