We decided to walk as a family to the Thatched Tavern with our children as we were on a holiday in the area, we arrived just after 8pm. We were told children were not allowed in his pub as soon as we all sat down, as this was their policy. As he went into detail he explained children shouldn’t be allowed out after 8pm as they were too rowdy! This was not the case with our children. He then advised we could sit outside with them , but the weather conditions were not ideal. This was a shame, as the pub was in close walking distance from Scott’s farm camp site. In addition as we wanted to help local business after various lockdowns, Unfortunately we will not be returning as we were not made welcome and will advise other holiday makers with families.

Now I'm going to have a good moan about the Thatched Tavern. On a lovely sunny Friday lunchtime during the school holidays we wandered over from Scotts Farm for lunch. Inside the pub was a large sign reminding people to 'save your local!', we ordered drinks and asked for a menu only to be told that the kitchen closed at 2pm. Why is it that so many country pub owners risk commercial suicide with this outdated notion that the great pub going public only require food between the hours of 12 and 2? Our family group of eight, instead of helping to provide well needed income for the pub, finished our drinks and left, probably never to return.

A friendly little pub in a lovely location. This pub is the ideal place to visit with family and friends all year round. In the summer there is a large beer garden overlooking the fields with plenty of space for families, friends and dogs, or in the winter the pub is warm and cosy with delicious Sunday roasts! For my dads 60th birthday I had organised a family party with roughly 30 guests, adults & children, we was able to reserve the dining area and a large outside area of the pub. Maddie & Tyler, the couple who have recently taken over, really couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful, they produced a huge selecting of different yummy foods with our own soft drinks and tea/coffee station. Maddie also made the most delicious carrot cake for the birthday cake, which was big enough for everyone to have a slice! We had a great day and wouldn't think twice about booking another family occasion. Looking forward to visiting again soon!

Popped in here whilst staying at the next door camp site. Lovely quaint pub with large garden. Me and my partner looked at the little huts you can stay in and really thought about returning one weekend to stay in one. That was until I needed to go to the toilet, the stench was something else. I have never visited a toilet that smelt so much or urine was absolutely vile. So will not be returning.

We arrived at the Thatched Tavern on our Motorbike at 17:30 on Friday Eve, it was a very hot evening. We were instantly welcomed by the owners, who couldn't have been more helpful. They opened the gate to the garden to allow us to park the bike next to our log cabin, showed us around, provided us with bottled water and milk (tea, coffee, kettle supplied in the cabin) and informed us of places to visit the following morning as they don't currently serve food. We spent the evening at the Tavern for a friends’ retirement party and the whole experience was fantastic, great service, wonderful atmosphere & lovely setting.

Having read some of the reviews, i was disappointed as this is my second visit and i have yet to meet the Grumpy Landlord or the rude local (although there were 14 of us so perhaps that helped!). In fact, this pub was as pleasant and accommodating as the last time i visited. Beautiful little pub, you have to watch your head as you walk through the door and if you are tall, the ceilings are low (we had a couple of six footers in our group which gave us a good laugh), the 14 of us commandeered the settee area which opened out onto the smallish patio - there was a large field which would have been perfect if there had been any children with us. The service was quick and the staff friendly, The toilets have seen better days but they were clean and well stocked which is all you need really. We chose this pub as it was the closest to the campsite but would have made a return visit regardless of location.

Grumpy would be kind. This man is so incredibly rude, it is beyond me why he would choose to work in the hospitality industry. He seems to have an issue with everything and his attitude is that the public are fortunate he offers his pub and garden. He gets the hump if you order chips for the kids (which weren't any good), has a fit if you put your bike against his shed, told a customer who asked what bands were playing at the festival that 'he was sick of telling people the same thing and that he can go and read the board'. There is a decent garden but hardly any tables or seating. Good thing it's always empty. The toilets are filthy. Great potential, just needs change of landlord.

Brie starter was almost cold, sirloin steaks were almost raw and full of gristle, when we had requested medium. Friends fish pie was watery and gammon was ovecooked. When we complained , the steaks were taken away and cooked further. The barman/owner took the price of 2 pints ale off the bill, but stated that in the winter months they did not have much call for food, so concentrated on the pub side. I disagree, if food is on offer, then they should provide good quality produce. To be honest he could not have cared less.Dining room was freezing cold, noticed lots of dust. We know it's an old building, but cobwebs and dust is bad. We will definitely not be returning and letting our friends know not to bother. It was a pleasure to walk into the very quaint thatched pub which years ago was two workers cottages and thankfully the interior has not been ruined by upgrading. The landlord explained that he had bought the pub outright a couple of years ago and therefore was a freehouse. The range of beers available was more than you would expect for a pub of this size and included a real ale that the locals enjoyed and a guest ale. The prices were very reasonable. The pub was full of locals and tourists alike and there was a very enjoyable interaction between everyone, due mainly to the world cup rugby being shown on the television. The Lamb Shank and the steak were very enjoyable. The dog was not allowed in the restaurant, quite rightly so, but there were tables in the bar area.A very enjoyable experience that we hope to repeat more often.

Looks lovely from the outside. This appears to be a 'locals pub'; "for local people". I would not go back. Visited at 1845 on a Friday evening with my partner (who by the way is recovering from cancer and drinks moderately) hoping for a nice relaxing evening.I ordered our drinks at the bar. Standing next to me was a large bald man in his fifties with a beer paunch wearing three-quarter length shorts, who had apparently had a few. Although I had not spoken to him, he decided he would attempt some loud sarcastic comments about my choice of drink - in the end I only bought 2 half pints. He continued to loudly make sarcastic remarks which I could hear from the other side of the bar. This was not relaxing, I did not feel welcome or comfortable here..I don't mind a bit of friendly banter; but this was far from it.

Only 2 tables in the porch area of the pub are available for inside eating, but there is a large garden. The Sunday roast was acceptable, but the 'renowned cauliflower cheese' was cauliflower with a very runny mustard tasting sauce poured over the top. When 4 of us adults, with 1 dog, visited on the Saturday afternoon for a drink, the Landlord was friendly. However, the Landlord's attitude was very different and moody on the Sunday and, indeed, appeared to antagonise our dog by walking back and forward past us with his very snappy and grumpy terrier dog whilst we were eating.Could be lovely if the whole place didn't smell of stale beer and cooked food.

We were staying up the road at a campsite and wanted a pub which was walkable and this was the closest and easiest to get to. This would really be the only reason that I would say to visit here. We just managed to get our order in for food as kitchen shuts at 8pm (!!!). Menu was pretty limited and typical pub grub. We went for 3 steaks and they were average, a bit chewy but the onion rings looked homemade and were lovely and nice chunky chips. Few good beers on tap but the decor and toilets could do with a bit of an upgrade. If you want a pub walkable (and not along busy roads) from Stubcroft farm campsite then visit, if not maybe try elsewhere!

I walked to this pub having researched it and discovered that it was a real ale pub. As I approached the premises I noticed a blackboard proclaiming real ales. When I entered I discovered that there was only one ale, that being Bombardier, the bar was otherwise festooned with lagers, gassed beers and ciders. Hardly a real ale pub. I enquired if the turned around Burning Gold pump clip indicated that this was about to come on line, to be told that they were not busy enough to warrant a second ale. This pub will not attract real ale drinkers with this attitude. I am not fond of Bombardier and declined a pint of it, I certainly was not interested in any gassed beer, lager or cider so I left and walked back into the village to The Shore for a pint of Dark Star Hophead.

Myself, my partner and 2 children had an amazingly unpleasant experience at this pub. We arrived at 5.45pm expecting to have a quiet drink and something to eat. We were greeted by the landlord who asked us gruffly if we would like a high chair and if our children were going to be well behaved? We immediately felt unwelcome, however it was raining outside and we wanted to feed the kids and ourselves. He continued to make our presence unwelcome 'no kids allowed in the bar' 'I am running a business here and people come here to get away from children' 'send them outside to play' (it was raining!) 'are we welcome here, no' and it went on....We decided to leave. A local who was at the bar, also left the bar, followed us down the road, said he was disgusted by the way the landlord spoke to us and apologised for not saying anything in the bar. I think that says it all! What a real shame, it is a lovely spot and we with a group of friends and kids had enjoyed a lovely afternoon there 4 years earlier under a different owner... I hope for all those that live in this vicinity and those that visit the area that the owner comes to his senses and realises running a business is not his forte!!

It has been a year since our visit to the Thatched Tavern but from the reviews read, not much has changed. We rang in advance to say that around 30 people including children would be visiting and would require snacks and drinks. We were told that they would be more than happy to have us and to come along. Sadly this was not the case. We were greeted by a rather grumpy landlord who constantly told our well behaved children that they could not go in the bar, sit on the swing seat, play on the play area etc. In addition to this, the snacks on offer consisted of expensive and undercooked chips from a burger van in the garden. Even though we had spent a considerable amount of money over the evening and were the only customers for most of the time, when our taxi was a little late, the owner kicked some of our party and children out in the cold to wait for it. There are other lovely places to go in West Wittering, which we found out this year and would suggest that if you have children, you visit them instead.

We chose to come to this pub for dinner on the Saturday night of our weekend away in East Wittering for the following reasons: the pub looked lovely and quaint from the outside, the landlord had taken trouble to advertise the pub with a sign written vehicle and signage boasting live music and finally when we viewed the Thatched Tavern’s website the pub was listed as ‘Award Winning’. We were sold – and decided to head down here for dinner. Arriving at 5pm things we were curtly greeted by the pub landlord (we assume he was this as he was behind the bar and serving drinks) although his choice of attire of a biker t-shirt and shorts seemed a little underdressed for the proprietor. We asked if we could order food and were abruptly told this was not possible until 6pm so ordered a drink and sat down. At 17.40 we went back to bar to get a second drink, this time a friendly and helpful lady served us and whilst ordering the drinks I noticed that other people were already ordering food. I commented on this to the lady and she said that we could order food at this time – the landlord overheard this and said rather aggressively that the lady needed to hold fire on the food orders as he didn’t want the kitchen ‘bombarded’ with orders (unusual as it wasn’t even 6pm yet). We ordered steak and chips and fish and chips, the food arrived in good time and was served by the same helpful lady, whilst reasonably tasty although the portions were a little small and the food was very greasy. I would be interested to learn what the ‘award’ was this pub won and when this award was given, as there was little noteworthy here in our opinion.

Great real ales and a homely feel. The squid starter was divine, followed by delicately cooked chicken supreme, cooked to perfection. The desserts are homemade and are simply stunning. This place punches above its weight and it's well deserved. Highly recommended. I will be back for sure.

We have eaten regularly a this pub on and off for many years and have seen it change hands 4-5 times. The last owners were friendly, but food not good, so we were looking forward to trying the food now it has new owners. Its always been a family pub and welcomed children. However, we and lots of our friends are not impressed with attitude of new owner. Our granddaughter walked in with us to choose a cake to have with our tea only to be greeted by the very unfriendly landlord who growled 'children are not allowed in the bar' well as the only other place to eat and drink is in the bar or in the garden, its obvious children are not welcome. We have popped in since on our own for a drink and never received a smile from him yet. Its such a shame as it is a lovely little building with a beautiful big garden, which is equipped for children. Won't bother to book a meal there now though, we will go to one of the many other local eateries that do welcome children!

I entered teh shop for a take away as I was shopping in Chichester and was hungry. I saw a very inviting looking pasty 'Beef and chilli' advertised at £4.70 take way price. I offered a £5 Bank of England note (Legal tender in England I am led to believe). I was told 'I am unable to accept cash' I shall be complaining to trading standards about this but in the mean time please don't shop here until they accept the currency of the land.

This place is always busy around lunchtime, hardly surprising given the value. Sadly, I have recently found that my clothes have smelt of smoke after I leave, which is unusual these days. I have also found the food to sometimes be undercooked, which can spoil things. Whilst I respect the concept, this place is a victim of it's own success, offering value that is head and shoulders above anywhere else of it's kind.

Love the new layout of the bar and the opening up of the fireplace. Proper cosy pub and friendly staff
