The Tavern in Denstone is a fabulous local pub, just down the road from Alton Towers. We are fortunate to live fairly close by and the Tavern is definitely our pub of choice, always guaranteed service with a smile. We never fail to have a good 'early doors' night out which almost always ends up with last orders! Special mention to Max, but all the staff are wonderful and can't recommend the Tavern enough. Pay a visit and enjoy a real country pub atmosphere! Best to leave your car at home 😉

What a gem of a pub. Ash & Keiren are doing a brilliant job running the Tavern and this shows through their fabulous team. Max is very chatty & friendly. My husband says Max pulls the best pint. The other staff are all great too. We love going here and it’s great to see it busy again. Food seems to be going down well. The pizzas are amazing. Always made to feel welcome and our dog is always made a fuss of too. Keep it up guys you’re doing a brilliant job.

Stopped for lunch today at the Tavern, what a lovely village pub. Very friendly landlords and locals, a home from home experience. We chose from the lunchtime specials and the fish&chips was especially good. We also tried the apple crumble which was really tasty and quite a big portion too. Looking forward to going back again when next passing. Would highly recommend, thank you

We happened upon The Tavern while staying in a holiday rental in the village. We loved the atmosphere as soon as we walked in. There was a lovely buzz to the place. We had booked a table but fancied a drink in the beer garden. The young man that served us was very accommodating and reassured us our table would still be ready when we came in. The selection of drinks was fab. After a drink in the beer garden we came in, looked at the menu and ordered food. I wanted the burger but they had been so busy they'd run out of patties. However, the landlord was right on it and came over to recommend an alternative. I went for the veggie burger and it was delicious! We also ordered two curries (it was Curry Night) and the chicken burger. All were lovely. We liked the experience so much we went back the next night for Steak Night. Rump steak, gammon steak, fish and chips and pie later we were just as happy as the night before. I sincerely hope The Tavern succeeds in this difficult climate for publicans. AMAZING place! If only it was my local!

We stopped in the beautiful pub for some dinner on the way home. We were greeted with a big welcome from staff. Food options were great and good options for kids. Staff went above and beyond to ensure that food was good and checked in to make sure we were having a good time. Will definitely be bringing my family back. Good homely feel, lots of happiness and laughter. Would be recommending to friends and family.

Very disappointing. 11 of us had an hour and 15 minutes time slot on our table, we waited 30 minutes before being told when to go to the carvery, leaving us 45 minutes to eat, drink, order desserts of which 2 were already sold out, and eat them. We were asked to leave the table whilst 2 of our party were still eating. We won’t be going back. A case of 2 many sittings with minimal time between them.

A genuinely tasteful, traditional English pub. The Tavern is a traditional 17th Century pub, tastefully extended to accommodate a cosy but adequately spacious dining area. Food is fantastic. All meals were served hot and at the same time. We were a party of 13 and not one complaint was heard! Whilst the homely dining environment and delicious food was enough to satisfy us, what really sets The Tavern apart from any other pub is the ambience. The atmosphere is cosy and intimate- yet welcoming and very friendly. This atmosphere radiates through all of the guests. And the people to thank for this friendly, warm welcoming ambience is The Tavern’s super friendly team. Our party received exceptional service from Paula tonight who I cannot thank enough for ensuring my birthday was as enjoyable as possible. Paula is an asset to The Tavern, and thanks to her personable, friendly, genuine service we cannot wait to visit again. Friday night pizza night it is! Thanks to Paula and the team for a wonderful birthday meal. Good vegan / vegetarian options. Wood fired pizza is great. A super pint of Guinness. Open fire. Dart board. Quiz night every Monday at 8pm.

The food was the highlight of our visit. All of it in which cooked to perfection, the chef even asked our server to check back with us because I didn't finish mine (small appetite) so it's clear they care. The service however was less impressive. No drinks menu, No check backs on our food and a less than smiley waitress. Not to mention the lack of a covid friendly environment, tables that had been marked as clean, were clearly not. Amongst other thing's. Lovely building. Incredible food. The Tav has recently reopened after a change of management and it is as good as ever. The staff are friendly and the locals propping up the bar are good for a laugh. The menu is good pub fare; burgers, fish and chips, steak and chips etc and they do it well. The meat comes from a local butcher and they work hard to source other local produce. The four cask ales on tap rotate, except for Pedigree which is a staple. What an awful experience when visiting a previously great pub. Fair enough that they are no longer serving food while the kitchen is redone but when the new landlord can hardly be bothered to serve you the future doesn’t look promising. Only one other couple were in there for early doors so people are obviously voting with their feet. The only reason I awarded it one star was because there was an open fire.

We had a bad experience here. Supposed to be great pizzas but ours were not. Now you would think (expect) pizzas straight out of the wood-fired oven would be hot. Well, ours were not and so we sent them back. As we reflected on the situation we decided to give it a miss. The landlord was confrontational and managed to upset my wife. He explained the chef had left three months ago and oven had not been used since until today. I think this was a lie and as they say the is no smoke without fire. No smoke. I hate having to complain, but even more, I hate being palmed off with substandard food and high prices. The only other diners were having steak and that looked pretty ordinary too. Up to you but I wouldn't. The brewery could care less either.

Ordered pizza and waited which bodes well for a piping hot out of the wood oven pizza. When it arrived it was warm, not hot and bubbly like it should be. Sent it back but decided not to proceed as it looked factory-made and the underside had stripes of discolouring which looked like fake cooking to me. The landlord was pretty rude and my wife was very upset by his attitude. The last meal of our holiday supposed to be a treat was a disaster. The saviour was home-cooked Staffordshire oatcakes at our cottage and they were scrummy. Avoid at all costs unless you want cold food and an aggressive host.

We were excited to visit based on recent reviews. After a day at Alton towers some hearty well cooked food was in order. Charming little place, bright and welcoming. Shame the welcome from staff wasnt as good. After standing for 5mins and not even noted by a single staff member we had to make our way past numerous groups of people at the bar. You need to get a drink before taking your seat (which would have been good to know when we first went in). Choice for children who dont like fizzy juice is very limited. When questioned the gentleman said it was because the brewery charge so much. As a patron I'd rather have the option to pay the higher price or not.

Brought some friends here because we'd heard the food was good and wanted to give it a try. Checked online for any events, there were none, so booked a table - had to book by phone in the end because the website wasn't working. Disappointed to arrive and find it was a tapas night, something that wasn't advertised on the website and I wasn't told when I booked. Now as it happens I love tapas but I would never choose to eat it in an English pub. One of our group is vegetarian and the only options were carb, carb, carb - patatas bravas, beetroot and goat's cheese risotto, a couple of other potato/rice-heavy tapas if I remember rightly, or pizza. Very little protein and no veg, not even a side salad on offer let alone any of the delicious vegetarian tapas dishes you'd get in a Spanish restaurant (chick peas with spinach, aubergines with palm honey, those little green salty roasted peppers, artichoke hearts, mixed peppers, lovely salads, grilled veg... mmmm...) I'm not vegetarian but I would usually order mostly veggie dishes for tapas with maybe a fish or meat option. Anyway, two of us including the vegetarian chose pizza, and two of us including me chose tapas to share. I had the one vegetarian option, the soup, which was nice but soup isn't really a tapas thing so it was a bit odd. My companion had sardines on toast which she said was good. We shared the lamb cutlets with red cabbage which were so good that we ordered another round; my companion found the cabbage too sweet but I enjoyed it. We also had duck with cabbage (again) which was less sweet so I let my companion eat most of that. The duck was free-range Gressingham, which is great, but the portion was so small: three slices, one the size of a pound coin, one the size of two pound coins, and one in between the two. The patatas bravas were nice enough BUT all the tapas arrived quite some time before the pizzas - and they were burnt. We discussed sending them back but the pizza-eaters said they were too hungry and couldn't face a further wait, especially as the tapas-eaters had almost finished their meal, so they ate them anyway, but they weren't very nice. The service was very slow, we had to wait almost half an hour before anyone took our food order, then we ordered more aperitifs as well (having finished the first ones) but they didn't arrive until after most of the food had turned up. The sangria was surprisingly good. So it was a mixed evening with a few good points but overall I wouldn't come here for tapas again.

I've eaten here occasionally over many years and although the food is usually nice, the portion size keeps getting less and less yet the price keeps going up and up. The last time I ate here was with a group of friends and some had a Hot Sandwich (rather small & not too much filling) while others had the Pie (all were small slices), Chips, Peas & Gravy but at almost £11 it's overpriced. Arrived and was quickly served at the bar and informed that the table we booked was next door in The Parlour. The bar was reminiscent of several pleasant country pubs that I have visited in Devon and the West Country over the years. The bar was well stocked with lagers, guest ales and several gins. The rose was very good also, I have been informed. We sat in a very pleasant dining area and our order was taken promptly. The waiter informed us that there may be a longer wait than usual as a table of 17 had walked in prior, however the weight was as I would have expected anywhere else and not a problem. The Parlour had couples, groups of gentlemen on business and families with children so The Tavern suits all ages. I ordered the lamb which was spectacular and my girlfriend's steak was excellent as well. The bill came to approximately £50 with a few drinks which I thought was very reasonable for the service and food we received.

We all had pizza and thought it was delicious. I have seen another review about the pizza base being black/burnt...do not let that put you off...this isn’t supermarket frozen pizza or Dominos/Pizza Hut. Stayed nearby and dropped in for a quiet drink. Staff were unbelievably friendly and prompt and it was very reasonably priced. Didn’t have food on this occasion, but noticed other diners and the service was very quick and the food appeared lovely. Next time the family are back, we’ll be sure to dine here too!

We arrived about 6.15 pm on a Wednesday evening and it was quiet with only 2 other tables taken. Food was excellent- husband had the lamb and I had the fish. Only 2 things that stopped me giving 5 stars - glass of Pinot Grigio didn’t taste right and waiter/barman was on his own serving the bar and 3 tables and wasn’t very happy about it!

A few months back we booked a mini trip to Alton Towers. We decided we didn't want to stay on site in the evening as we wanted to try some local pubs out and to eat what we would call *real food* instead of the usual theme park food expectations.

Make sure you book as it’s busy. Two sittings are available and it’s fantastic. Lots of veg, potatoes and choice of meats. Reasonably priced and a lovely little country pub. Parking can be a problem so be aware. Bakewell Tart is my daughters favourite

Booked by phone for 6on for my wife and I. We arrived ten minutes late. We announced our arrival and were told by the manager " you'll have to wait till I'm at the bar" He came to the bar and I repeated my name and he replied "you're late" and showed us to our table. The food was tasty and plenty, in fact, we each left some of our main meal as we were full. The toilets were in need of drastic update but also the manner in which you are treated, especially if they want to attract more than locals on a regular basis. Nevermind that "we get full", if they are first timers, with attitude which we experienced, they are not going to return.

Visited here with my Mum and a large group to celebrate a birthday. The pub itself is lovely and the staff seemed really friendly. We had a three course carvery which was very nice. There was a choice of starters and desserts. The food was delicious and everyone enjoyed their choices. I would certainly return again in the future.

Stopped here while attending an interview. We were recommended by another establishment in the area.

My wife and I live ten miles from The Tavern, and had visited once before for drinks. It looked lovely then outside and inside (like a proper country pub should be - beams and softly lit). We decided to then, and last weekend, we finally got round to returning for dinner. We booked in advance, as it has a reputation for being busy.

Visited at short notice and the Tavern were able to look after our table of five promptly and provided us with perfectly cooked good quality food. The menu was not the typical plain pub grub i.e. scampi and chips (although they may serve scampi), i had the steak burger with gherkins, chips and salad, my husband had pork belly with cider jus, mash, veg etc, our children had beer battered cod, pasta in a tomato sauce and sausages with mash. Ingredients are locally sourced.

Food good. The steak is of good quality and well cooked. Lovely Stilton sauce. Fish and chips went down well and Cajun burger was lovely.

Service was slow, considering it was only Friday when I visited. I also overheard two other customers enquire why their orders were taking so long. Isn't it strange how three completely separate parties thought the service was a little sluggish? Food was OK.

My partner and I have started popping in recently since the new landlord has taken over. Having read the recent comments I wouldnt take any notice of them, I have been local to the area for years and sadly it’s just one of those areas where certain people do not like change. There is always a good atmosphere, beer is good, we tried the steak night last night (Thursday) and we’re really impressed! Locally sourced Aberdeen Angus steak, beautifully cooked, plenty on the plate and very reasonable! £27.95 for 2 steaks (sirloin) and a bottle of vino, extremely good value and no scrimping on quality. Keep up the good work 👍

Whilst in store after ordering 2 iced coffee’s we were handed our drinks without lids. My partner very politely asked if we could have lids for our drinks and the member of staff very rudely replied ‘if we had lids I would’ve put one on’. Being an assistant manager in retail I would be appalled if I heard any of my staff speaking to a customer like this.

Went to this place for my daughters 5th birthday dinner. Staff decorated the area so well and left quiet alot of thing on the table like goddy bags balloons etc. Service was spot on from all the staff including the sweet girl who served us. 100% recommending and coming back. Just call and tell them I'm advance about the occasion and they go above and beyond to make it special xxx

Good service with nice decor and friendly staff. Good choice on menu hot and cold and I had a window shop in the cake area. Had Welsh Rarebit and Eggs Benedict and delicious. One poached egg slightly hard but as a person who doesn't make them as know it is hard to time consistency still good.
