This afternoon tea was lovely! The service was very friendly, professional and helpful. The sandwich selection included ham with mustard. We requested some without, which they happily accommodated. On seeing the small selection of finger sandwiches, I initially thought the portions looked rather small but on request, the plate was quickly refilled. Fresh tea was also offered several times. The scones and cakes were lovely and if needed I’m sure refills would have been provided.

We stayed at the hotel for the weekend and booked meals for Friday and Saturday night. Despite Saturday being much busier the service at the hotel was excellent and very attentive. Food choice was good so plenty to choose from over the two nights. All food was very well cooked and tasty and would recommend the restaurant for a good quality meal out in very good surroundings.

A special lunch for my husband and I. The portions seemed small but after three courses I felt quite full. The dessert, chocolate brownie with nuts and vanilla ice cream was a stunning plate, superb. Waiting staff very helpful and kept in mind my inability to eat onion. They were efficient and attentive. Overall a lovely lunch, enjoyed by us both. Coffee in the lounge with a real fire was fabulous. Recommended

Looking for a restaurant to mark our Ruby Wedding, The Tapestry Restaurant at the Bailiffscourt Hotel was chosen. If you haven't been to Bailiffscourt before, you will be impressed arriving down a long drive to draw up in front of the impressive property set in lovely grounds. The rooms are beautiful and ooze charm and comfort. We were welcomed at the restaurant and shown to a table by the window; as requested. From start to finish the staff were friendly and attentive. Service was as one would expect of a first class restaurant. We chose to select from the 3 course Sunday Lunch menu priced at £34 per person. We celebrated with champagne. To say we both had Lobster Soup, Lamb, and Pannacotta, does not describe the beautiful presentation, delicious flavours and interesting dish combinations. The experience was memorable. I hope we have another excuse to dine there again soon.

Had a very nice lunch here, the staff were friendly and the food was yummy! We had a bottle of the local fizz which was a lovely treat. The atmosphere was nice and the building itself is beautiful, if you haven’t been before you must check it out! I’d always recommend double checking the website when booking because we didn’t realise afternoon tea didn’t start until 3:30.... hence we had lunch instead! Will definitely return here (hopefully for afternoon tea next time ☺️)

We took advantage of a voucher in a local newspaper to visit for lunch. The setting of the Hotel is most pleasant and the Tapestry Restaurant is much as you would expect, giving the impression of being within a building of great history and character. Only two other tables were occupied but snow was all around so not too surprising it was not busier. However this did mean that we all tended to speak in whispers and I prefer a more buzzy ambience. Just three choices for starters, mains and desserts plus a tasting menu @ £45 with more courses but no choice. Portions a little more generous than other similar "fine dining" establishments, I had a proper bowl of soup, home baked warm bread accompanied. Dishes were well presented and cooked, service was friendly and prompt but my side order of sugar snap peas did not appear until I had already consumed three quarters of the dish placed before me so this did not impress considering just 6 people dining. Good wine list, reasonable choice by the glass although the one I especially fancied was in the Special Section and I could not justify paying £15 for a glass as a poor OAP. Prices generally in line for what you would expect for an hotel/restaurant of this nature. The voucher gave good value. A plus point is that they do not put a "discretionary" service charge on the bill, they suggest instead amounts based on either 10 or 15% but this does at least give the opportunity to reflect what has happened, the very late arrival of the sugar snap peas for example, without having to be brave and ask for subtraction of a suitable amount..

The Tapestry Restaurant at the Bailiffscourt Hotel Climping Street, Littlehampton BN17 5RW, England - Marvellous Our friends had a voucher & the deal was a meal at a discount, a promotional offer to get more people coming in and so coming again. The service was just perfect. We visited with two friends who had a voucher for a two course lunch for £15 a head. This was tremendous value for really good quality food. We had breakfast and lunch twice in the Tapestry Restaurant in our two night stay at Bailiffscourt. I noticed that families with young children were seated away from couples, making the environment very relaxed. Staff were very attentive and friendly and were an absolute delight to talk to. In terms of the food, there was a good variety of choice and it was all very fresh. The freshly baked bread served in the evenings was amazing, but on a personal level I felt that the evening food was a little over-seasoned/salty.

Appalling service. Forgot our order and after twenty minutes returned to take it again. Waited 15 minutes for starter, another 10 minutes to clear then a further 15 minutes for main. Waited another 10 minutes to clear the plates and after another 20 minutes we had to ask the staff to take our order for pudding. After a further twenty minutes we gave up and left. We started with drinks in the lounge and ordered our meal while waiting until our table was ready. The menu is fairly simple but with a good range of choices. To start I had the mussels while my husband had the pigeon salad which were both nice. For main course I had the gnocchi which was really really good and I tried a little bit of my husband's guinea fowl which was also nice. I'm not really a dessert person but all 3 courses were included in our deal so we went ahead and opted for the honey cake and caramel tart. They were amazing. The sauce with the caramel tart was so good. The service throughout was excellent and attentive.

I was a guest in a party for dinner. On arrival the service was indifferent, hardly a warm welcome. We waited a long time for orders to be taken and the food served. I had gradvalax to start, I’ve had better. For my main course I chose gnocchi (the only vegetarian choice). The portion was very small and rather tasteless. The crime brûlée dessert was the greatest disappointment, the custard part was bland and the topping was just sugary and not set and brittle.

My heart sank when I saw that risotto was my main veggie starter option and gnocchi my only vegetarian main course option, but they were extremely good, albeit quite small portions. Given the standard of the restaurant however, perhaps the chef could give his veggie options a bit more thought, as risotto and gnocchi are now rather the new "vegetable lasagnes" of restaurants which want to include one or two veggie options on the menu. My family enjoyed their meat options. Although we didn't have any problems ourselves, I overheard two different restaurant guests struggling to make themselves understood with the mainly Eastern European waiting staff, but hopefully their English will improve over time, or perhaps more effort could be made to recruit local staff.

Eating at Tapestry is a highlight of our annual Bailiffscourt stay & we were certainly not disappointed with the food this year. The menu is simply set out (e.g. on the 1st night I had "Courgette" followed by "Lamb") but there is nothing basic about the cuisine which is beautifully presented, extremely delicious & with quirky elements. On both evenings the restaurant was full & that did mean the service was quite slow, especially between 1st & main courses. Fortunately we were a group of longstanding friends & had plenty to chat about!

Yesterday we celebrated our Mother's 80th birthday with a family lunch in your restaurant.....it was spectacularly......AWFUL. We waited an hour and a half for our main courses, having asked for more bread 3 times and none appearing, there was then a farcical tableau with 3 waiters offering other tables extra bread...these tables were either on their deserts or paying their bills, bottles of water were unceremoniously plonked on the table with their lids still on, my nephews main meal was bought out with our starters, the restaurant itself was really dirty, the carpet by my seat looked as though various dinners had been spilt on it, the waiting staff were so inexperienced we actually wondered if they'd just been drafted in from somewhere else with no previous warning. It was a complete shambles and such a shame for our Mother as she and my late Father have been guests of yours for over 15 years. In summary our experience felt like a scene from a mixture of Victoria Woods Two Soups and an Episode of Faulty Towers. Needless to say we (that is 5 adults) will never been returning.

The deal was a meal at a discount, but with the guarantee that it would be the real deal. A promotional offer to get more people coming in and so coming again. The service was just about acceptable, but e.g. the server could not place one diner's food and had to lean over and get her help in placing the dishes. The real problem was with the mushroom risotto which I chose. I have had many risottos in this country and abroad, especially Italy, and this bore little resemblance to the best of these. OK, it was over salted (which is almost endemic these days) but also is was meagre in size and the little rice there was had been swamped by the sauce. Apart from the look, texture and consistency of the dish being unappealing, it also left me feeling very out of sorts so that when I got home afterwards I had to take medicine and not eat anything till the following morning, as I felt so uncomfortable in my stomach and digestive tract. To cap it all the bill was in error as we ended up paying far too much. Having realised this we returned from the car park to sort it out and to their credit they took off an amount from each person's bill, but it was not an initial error that should be happening in this class of restaurant - or the class they were clearly aspiring to be. Needless to say I am very put off going there again. A pity as we had been previously to its partner restaurant in Midhurst - the Spreadeagle - and found it was excellent.

However there were far too many staff asking us whether everything was alright, seemd to be someone different each time. Our booking had mentioned coffee and petit fours in the lounge but we were told that the lounge was full of people having tea! There was a mix up with the bill, which took a while to sort out.Overall we felt it was very average, the potential here is enormous. Visited for afternoon tea for our anniversary, expecting the usual high quality service but were disappointed from the start. Arrived at reception and told that our name would be on a table in one of the three rooms (so basically go and find it yourself)... that wouldn't have been so bad if there was actually names on the tables but there wasn't so we had a case of three separate couples looking around for table names that didn't exist. Something more at home at an industry awards diner than an intimate afternoon tea! Tea arrived beautifully presented but no offer to pour. Then that was it for the service. Every table was just left for the guests to enjoy without regular checks etc. I (and the table next to us) had to go to reception to ask for our bill. A box for our remaining cakes was plonked on the table without the offer to pack.A real shame because the venue, atmosphere, food and tea were delightful..... all let down by simple customer service. Hopefully all will return to 'the way it used to be' before our next visit .

It was nice to be back after a gap of a couple of years. One evening was a family celebration and the next a quieter get together with the same menu. The food is lovely but rarely hits the peaks it might. The 'Climping Beach' starter of crab and lobster was perfect on the Saturday but less impressive on the Sunday, when I was really looking forward to a repeat hit. On Saturday the herb crusted saddle of lamb was not rare as requested and nor was it particularly tasty. The dauphinoise potatoes were very tasty but bathed in fat/cream/oil - it is disappointing in this day and age not to be able to achieve a stunning taste without such an attack on the arteries. The turbot which my brother extolled on the Saturday was a little dry and underwhelming on the Sunday. The rice pudding and cheese were enjoyable. The premises are delightful for those of who enjoy a period feel and cosy atmosphere, as I do. The staff were in the main really friendly but most of the waitresses presented the food without making eye contact and with expressionless faces. Worth going but could be exceptional given the delightful setting. We also had cream tea which was lovely. The best bits were the warm scones and sandwiches - would have preferred more of these and less of the ancillary cakes

I'd been asked to find somewhere for a special birthday dinner that would be different from the usual fayre. Bailiffscourt fitted the bill perfectly, although the menu prices seemed quite high I felt the occasion warranted the expense. The building is wonderfully charming, it was only a shame we visited at night and couldn't fully appreciate the grounds. On arrival we followed the signs for the restaurant, but in hindsight heading for reception would have been best, there we could have taken off our coats and had a chance to look over the menus. We were given three menus to choose from, a little unnecessary as you are able to mix and match from two of them with the third being a tasting menu. The menus started at £52.50 for two courses on the Climping menu and rose to £67.50 for two courses on the Sussex menu. The tasting menu came in at £75 per head. The food was good, the starters were the highlight but overall the food didn't warrant the price, we were told how the chef cooks the steak, medium rare, but it arrived over medium, the gnocchi, although advertised as a main was starter sized, the waiter apologised for the steak but made no comment regarding the gnocchi. The puddings disappointed. What you seem to be paying for in the history and surroundings. If you're used to fine dining then you could be disappointed here, if, like on this visit, you require a certain formality and sense of occasion and don't mind the cost then this will suit you well. We may well try it again, as a couple and in daylight, when we will get to appreciate the setting.

I pointed this out to the waiter when he was taking the plates and he said I do apologise and whisked the plate away.We had to ask for the salt pot to be filled (no big deal).Whilst eating my Main (Roast lunch) I cut into the last roast potato which had a small hole at the top and found a dark purple worm/grub kind of thing in it.Because I had already asked for the salt pot to be filled and pointed out the hair in my starter to be quite honest I was too embarresed to point out the problem with my potato! The puddings were delicious. I love dogs and have had many of my own, but after a relaxing lunch, we settled in the lounge to enjoy our tea and coffee. There was already one dog in there, well behaved so no problem. Then another dog was brought in. It broke wind and smelt disgusting. OK, that's dogs for you, but it wasn't a welcome addition! He then decided to enthusiastically investigate the other dog in the rather unpleasant way that dogs do! Then, a member of staff brought in dog biscuits and water, which was placed on the rather lovely carpet. The dog ate and drank happily but very noisily, slurping and crunching away right next to us and slobbering all over the rug. We all felt that this is not what we had expected from our quiet, relaxing (and expensive) lunch. OK in a village pub, but not there. It ruined our lunch to be honest and although the food was nice, (I have had better, but I've also had a lot worse) we will think twice before returning. Surely with that amount of space there could be at least one dog-free lounge?

A very disappointing visit for a birthday lunch. We were offered roast beef that was either medium rare or well done. As someone who usually likes it medium I opted for well done as rare, red beef doesn't really appeal to me. The problem with well done was that is was too well done and more like slabs of sun dried, shrivelled leather dished up on the plate, that was virtually unable to be eaten. Hence most of it was left on the plate. There was hardly a vegetable to be seen with the meal but the potatoes were OK. Four of us had the beef and were all extremely disappointed with it, especially at a cost of £31 for a 3 course lunch plus £3.50 for a coffee. My father voiced our disappointment when paying the bill but there was no offer of any compensation or anything. All in all, not up to the old standard and reputation of Bailiffscourt unfortunately. The restaurant was only about 20% full! I guess this should have given us an indication of what was coming. Perhaps the chef had taken a New Year break and the food was pre-cooked and reheated?

I have eaten here several times and the food and service remain at a high standard, but most recently I have to say I was disappointed. Firstly the beetroot ravioli main course was laughably small - barely a starter size - just three average sized ravioli parcels, with a small quantity of roasted vegetables, whereas my meat eating dinner companions had reasonably sized plates. Is this yet another chef who thinks people are vegetarians because they don't like food? Secondly, bizarrely, the family table of four next to us thought it would be a great idea to play a noisy game of snap or some other such card game in between courses, which was disturbing to a number of diners sitting in proximity to them, including us. I complained discretely to the management but nothing was done to get them to behave in a manner appropriate to the fine dining establishment that the restaurant surely feels it is, even though it would have been very easy to relocate them in one of the numerous cosy ante rooms. Pity.

The atmosphere is charming in this quaint restaurant but the food is modern, with great presentation & perfect quantities. We were staying on DBB basis & the menu choices were the same both evenings but that's fine, given the extent of the menu. In our group the favourite starters were the scallops & the smoked salmon, the favourite mains being the lamb, the John Dory, the beetroot ravioli & the ox cheek. Puddings ranged from exotic fruit in tuile basket to strawberry stack, to creme caramel, lemon tart with G&T ice bream, chocolate tart. All divine. Even when it's busy the staff are charming, helpful & attentive, although at the very peak the was a bit of a delay in our food arriving (we were fine with that, the food was hot & fresh when it came)

I have not eaten here for the past year but am about to take yet another short holiday at Bailiffscourt. The restaurant is really beautiful, with the whole building looking much older than it really is. The lunches are very generous with a good choice. The evening meals are more adventurous and the portions are somewhat smaller. I always find them quite satisfying but a man with a huge appetite might just be a little disappointed. The food is always beautifully presented and the service is excellent.Rather pricey but well worth it. Try it !

Bailiffs Court - what can I say! Horrendous! Having requested a dietary requirement for a Diabetic 4 weeks before arrival and been told this has been arranged both at the time of booking and on theMorning before we set off... I was shocked to arrive and be told that I hadn't given them enough notice and this was not intact possible! They then messed up our order many times and the food was average and overpriced. The service appalling but Inthink the most ridiculous and stupid thing they did was sit us outside ( because I requested an outside table) in the middle of a waspBest! Ever heard of common sense!!! This was an experience that left a sour taste in my mouth in more ways than one!Horrific place!

Had a voucher given to us for The" Bailiffscourt Afternoon Tea". it consisted of "six finger sandwiches ,- 4 scones with cream and jam - 8 petite cakes/pastries. I have to say i would expect a much higher standard and quality of food, with a more substantial offering from an establishment of this repute. What was offered does Not justify a cost of £25,00 per person. On the basis of my visit i would not recommend you visit for afternoon tea. Shame our afternoon did not live up to expectation.

Sorry but I was disappointed to find out that the place was built (according to the plans on the wall) not too long ago. Which was a surprise given that the hotel and restaurant is tatty on the inside. Carpets need cleaning and the walls were dirty. Seats were uncomfortable and to be honest the food was nothing more than poor at best. Both meals arrived wrong and while mine had to go back my wife carried on eating hers, which meant that when mine arrived back some ten minutes later the shared mixed veg was cold - and I was not offered a fresh hot mix. So I'm marking it down on style, service and quality. We will not be coming back!

Went for afternoon tea on Sunday 12th April for my 50th birthday treat and to celebrate my daughter and son-in-laws first wedding anniversary.May I say that the service was excellent and that the location was beautiful, but that is the only positive. The cost was £25 per head (five of us went, making a grand total of £125) and quite frankly it was the biggest waste of money I have spent on food for a long time. When we arrived we requested some cheese sandwiches(as not everyone liked the selection on offer) in addition to the cucumber ones, the smoked salmon and the egg ones. These were brought out on a cake stand ( on the bottom tier) and were absolutely awful. The edges were dry and curled (as if they had been made sometime in advance), and the cheese was waxy and hard (in fact we thought it was a piece of rind at first). The two slices of bread were cut into thirds and these were not cut equally and some random pieces of crust were left on(I know this may sound trivial, but when you are paying the price we paid, you would perhaps expect the presentation to be better). On the top of the cake stand were three small ramekin type pots with jam, lemon curd and cream. On the middle of the stand were warm scones wrapped in a napkin. The scones were a very dark brown colour and solid (as if they had been cooked for too long in the oven). On three separate rectangular plates was a selection of supposedly homemade cakes. These were;sticky toffee pudding cake, lemon cheesecake, strawberry barrette, mini mille fuille and a miniature fairy cake.I understand that all of of the above are made on the premises, but they have a "Mr. Kipling" type appearance. The sticky toffee pudding cake was delicious, but the rest; the lemon cheesecake had no lemon in it and tasted like cream cheese and sugar, the boat of the strawberry barrette was soggy, the mini mille fuille tasted sweet and stodgy and the miniature fairy cake was just that, nothing remarkable. We requested English Breakfast tea as our tea of choice, which arrived on a small tray with pretty china cups and hot (slightly sour)milk. When I say hot milk I mean as heated in a microwave hot (!?), I have never heard of this, but perhaps this is how Bailiffscourt do it.The first cup was okay, but when the second teapot was refilled I am not sure whether the wrong teabags were used or if the teapot had not been rinsed properly as it tasted like Earl Grey tea, needless to say we did not drink it We left approximately sixteen of the twenty five cakes and three of the five scones .All in all a very poor experience, not one that any of us will be repeating. Having had afternoon tea at South Lodge recently (wonderful and they use proper tea leaves not bags) perhaps the manager of Bailiffcourt should go there to see how it should be done(and it only costs £1 more!) P.S. Why did we not complain at the time?Number one none of us wanted to upset my husband whose treat it was, and two, reception was busy and no member of staff asked us if we had we enjoyed it.

I had a birthday celebration here. The Sunday lunch was excellent . Fine dining at a reasonable price. Everything was served perfectly by friendly and welcoming staff. The food was very tasty extremely well cooked and presented. There is nothing to fault. In addition a beautiful surrounding with a historic atmosphere. The location is great being in the rural area but close to the town and sea. If you are looking for something special but at a reasonable price this is it. The drinks are more expensive and the choice in wines are higher end. Would you regret it here? definitely not.

Cannot fault the location, atmosphere and service of this wonderful hotel which we have stayed at many times. Our visit today was a gift from our daughter and partner for Christmas, when booking, we specifically requested a "nice table location", somewhat disappointed to be seated between two doors with a panoramic view of the light switches!! Great shame, when mentioned to reception, it appears a breakdown in communication had occurred - felt that apology offered was not sincere!

Even the best restaurants don't get it right all of the time, I was here for lunch, arriving early we were the first to be seated and were alone for most of the meal with only one other couple arriving towards the end of our meal, the first and second courses were superb and cooked to perfection, and for dessert we ordered the Churros, a favourite of mine, sounding all the more appealing covered with pistachio. While I appreciate that master chefs like to reinvent the wheel from time to time, this was not a success, they were rather stodgy and the chocolate accompaniment was just wrong, being too thin and too cheffy, it should be sweet and thick, the churros should be sweet and light, honestly they tasted as if they had been fried at the local chippy, vaguely fishy. we left them after the first bite or two and went on to enjoy some fabulous petits fours with our coffee. Has this put me off?......not in the least, everything else including the service was wonderful, perhaps this is just one of those things that would be better left from future menus, because everything else was so good these stood out as not meeting the usual high standard. I would still have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant, there are few places in West Sussex or elsewhere offering such value at lunch time in such civilised surroundings, just don't order the churros.

We were a group of girlfriends chilling out away from our families for the w/e & ate in the restaurant both evenings where the food was sublime. It is possible to mix & match the menu (Chef's / A La Carte) but each night the (changing) Chef's Menu was excellent & most of us had a problem choosing which courses to sample. There is a tasting menu but maybe next time...Portions are the perfect size, artfully presented, very tasty. One night the Chef's dessert ran out by the time we ordered so the next night we pre-ordered what we wanted to avoid disappointment. The ambience in the (full) restaurant was lovely, beautifully lit. Both evenings the Chef's fish was served filleted, a real bonus, but without compromising on taste. Breakfast is excellent too & the staff could not be more charming, attentive or courteous

My wife and I went to Bailiffscourt for their set price Sunday lunch and thoroughly enjoyed an excellent meal, which was terrific value for money. The menu was fairly traditional, but the food was beautifully cooked and presented and the service was exemplary. It was hot & sunny when we visited and therefore lunch was served outside in the hotel's inner courtyard, which was just right. I'm fairly sure that the temperature inside would have been unbearable. We shall definitely do Sunday lunch again and may even try the a la carte menu on another day of the week. Would recommend to anyone.

This is a hotel is in a beautiful setting, of that you cannot argue. We arrived for dinner last night, wandered into the Courtyard without a single member of staff acknowledging us. After 10 minutes, my husband went to find someone who could offer us some drinks and confirm our dinner reservation. After we had finished our first glass of fizz we waited to be asked if we would like another!...................again, no person came! So again my husband went on the hunt for staff and some menu's!................Eventually we were shown to our table. The choice was varied. Overall taste, fairly poor. Far too much salt. Desert was wonderful though. Overall a poor experience and such a shame. They have everything going for them with regards to location and ambiance, just fail to live up to expectations. If you wish to spend a considerable amount of money, service and quality is not as important as the venue.....this is the place for you, if you however, wish for the overall package as we did.............. AVOID! Owners.....you need to seriously train your staff and have a quiet word with the chef to ease off the seasoning!

A la carte menu with 5 or 6 well-thought out dishes in each section which did not change during our 3 day stay, plus daily changed chef's choice menu. High quality food of delightful tastes very well presented. Extensive quite pricey wine list with some very expensive items. Attentive friendly staff. Overall moderately expensive (about £150 for 2 including medium cost wine). Only complaint is that the breakfast chef was not willing to produce an omelette. At this quality of hotel and restaurant this was very disappointing.

Yesterday I visited this hotel along with family and close friends for afternoon tea to celebrate a couple of birthdays. My friend had made the booking three weeks before, specifying a particular room and the number of teas and making sure the hotel confirmed the booking. We arrived on the day to find that our booking had been 'overlooked' (for want of a better description) as the room we had reserved was in use by 'residents', and instead of receiving an apology from the manager we received the biggest fob off I have ever experienced. Talk about bad customer service. We have visited this hotel several times before and have always received excellent service but I felt after yesterdays treatment I should let others now what to expect - not a lot.....

I am not a tea drinker but I do like fruit teas and the Berry tea was delicious. The sandwiches were fresh and tasty, the selection of cakes was so great they gave us a bag to take home the ones we did not manage to eat, and the scones/cream and jam were delicious. We relaxed, chatted enjoyed the pleasant surroundings and at the end of it all agreed that it had been a good idea to go along. Would recommend it to anyone who wants something special to share.

I love this estate. I've deejayed here for a wedding in a marquee they had set up at the back. was a great gig too.Very pretty little compound of historic buildings. Nice staff. My brother and sister-in-law took myself and my then girlfriend there for dinner one evening and the food was top drawer. I can say that as an ex chef. It was the business. Expensive though. I'm glad it was on them. You're looking at upwards of £50.00 a head, so I guess it's safe to say you won't get any rough types or shouty kids spoiling your peace! Somewhere to go a. if you're loaded or b. as a very special treat for your loved one.
