The Swan Inn in Waverley

My rump steak roast dinner was cooked to perfection, very efficient service! The menu is so vast, will have to come back to try it all.

We hadn't been to The Swan for years, but we were so pleased we came back! The place is stunning, cosy nooks, very stylish and so welcoming. The roasts were fabulous - fresh, tasty, well seasoned, piping hot and will very high quality ingredients. Highly recommended👌🏻

We stayed over night with bed, dinner and breakfast on the leisurely package with two dogs. The staff here are proof that a happy work force equals happy customers. All super friendly, all went out of their way to make us and our dogs feel welcome. The over night dog bag, the dog beds, bowls provided is a cut above all Surrey pub dog stays I’ve had across the Petworth, Chilworth and Chiddingfold areas. In the morning a sausage chopped up for the dogs made for a cherry on the top! Would recommend this pub with or without dogs, lovely spacious rooms, king size beds, fantastic location, easy access and overall wonderful night stay. Felt like we’d been there much longer. I will be finding a reason to get back there soon!

Incredible! The patio was cozy and inviting. The food was wonderful and I so enjoyed the doggie visitors! We stayed in the Inn and were so impressed with all facilities.

Lovely atmosphere (TV not blasting out over conversations), great food and polite/friendly staff. Were able to use our Gourmet Society card which was an added bonus as we got 25% off the total bill which more than covered the 25% service charge.

With my luck has changed, or I’m getting mellow in my old age…but truth is truth so here’s an honest appraisal of this new find. Took a swerve into this unknown pub whilst heading home and in need of food, drink and a loo. The car park used is the other side of a moderately well used road to a little caution crossing as it’s on a bend BUT, don’t be put off…what awaits is absolutely with the effort! Smiling staff clearly enjoying their day, wide selection of posh gin for the lady of the house and alcohol free choices for the chauffeur 🙄 Really swish interior, really nice garden too… Food…not the widest choice, but everything I saw come out half made me want to change my order. She went for a chicken flatbread creation that looked like it needed a tray due to its size whilst I went for a burger with sharer sides of calamari and cod n crab balls. Four VERY employ plates went back as two very full diners set off to continue the drive home. It’s not our local, but if I could afford Chiddingfold property prices, it would be! That said…it’s within striking range! Prices not excessive either.

Quite simply a lovely place to stay and eat. Our over night room was fantastic and the bed was one of the most comfortable we have ever slept in. All the staff are super attentive and 2 mentions must go to Sue who does the morning shift, absolutely lovely and couldn't do enough for us and the young lad who I think is the under manager in the evening, he also was great at his job. We are now looking for a reason to go back to this lovely Inn.

This evening, The Swan hosted our “funeral party” for our late mother - 20 family & friends coming together to enjoy a meal and share memories. We couldn’t have hoped for a better location. From the moment we arrived, every member of staff was welcoming, kind and unfailingly helpful; this continued throughout the evening. The food was AMAZING (thank you to the unseen chefs!), as was the service. I feel guilty that I didn’t ask for names so I could give personal thanks but, on behalf of all in our party, thank you so much for a wonderful evening - and for tolerating us 😀

Situated in a small village this pub punches above its station. Centrally in a good location it has a small but tasty menu, pleasant staff and local beers. I had the scampi which was beautifully presented and this was followed by a small desert platter that was enough for 4 of us. It all came to around £35 each which we considered great value for the experience.

Went for lunch with a friend, great food, and standout service from Sam. He welcomed us enthusiastically, served our food and drinks efficiently, checked that we had everything we needed, and made an excellent impression. If only all staff in pubs were as good as him, well done Sam.

We have driven past many times and thankfully had time to stop / and so glad we did Decor was fantastic / loved everything Staff very helpful and friendly Had the cheese and bacon burger fries and homemade slaw / all was fantastic 10/10 We will definitely return and would highly recommend

Went as a couple for dinner and bumped into another couple of friends at the bar so joined on one table having both booked a table separately. Three of us had the special starter of venison & black pudding scotch egg, whilst I had the lamb kofta, followed by two of them having the haddock & mackerel fishcake special main, 1 had the flat iron steak cooked medium rare with skin on chips, with house slaw & a sauce and I had a rack of ribs with corn on the cob, fries and house slow. We decided to pig out and have 3 courses as we had some red wine left so the guys had cheese & biscuits whilst the other 2 of us had the apple sorbet and a sticky toffee pudding. We had good service and weren't rushed and enjoyed a nice relaxed evening with a couple of bottles of wine so will definitely go again.

Lovely Sunday roast dinner, but service was so slow! Table booked for2pm, service started well as drinks served quickly. 10 minutes in our food order was taken, but it was gone 3pm before any food arrived at our table! If there was a problem in the kitchen it would have been nice to have been told this when ordering. We all had a gammon roast which was delicious. Nice decor in the pub, but despite having a log fire, it was not lit. It was a very cold winter’s day, so without the log fire it was decidedly chilly in the restaurant. 12.5% service charge added to our bill despite the long wait for food. Will try a different pub next time.

Sorry, but eggs florentine followed by a shared banoffee waffle was quite the worst lunch I have ever had… I really advise you ALL to never ever go to this pub until Uppham Brewery sells it to someone else..Brilliant village, brilliant position but absolutely disgusting

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear! When you have good food, it is ruined by very slow service. 30-minute wait for starters and then another 30 for mains. The vegetable curry was full of rice and potato (which I suppose is a veg) but that counts high on the carbs. The staff need a bit more training here.

Absolutely lovely pub, with fantastic food that belies the ordinariness of the menu. Great service and a really special occasion. Had one of the best all day breakfast I can remember having, while my wife had a lovely flat iron steak. Suggest a good walk first, as we did, as the area is perfect for walking and the food deserves a good appetite.

The Swan Inn did not disappoint! The staff were all friendly and helpful, Marie the manager was lovely as were Robbie and Skyla and the rest of the team. We stayed in room 7 which was a beautiful room. The cottage pie was delicious and the live entertainment from Megan Louise was amazing!

Tuesday 7th November 2023 First the good. The burger was really good, the skin on fries were excellent and really crispy. Service was friendly. We chose The Swan for location and set menu online. On arrival we were told the set menu wasn’t available and didn’t start until next week. Logging on to the WiFi we got an email inviting us to try the set menu, come on guys 🤷🏻‍♂️ We ordered drinks, I had ordered a Hogs back shandy. Tasted a bit weird, I questioned the drink and was told it was indeed shandy. Only now in hindsight and my wife recalling a conversation the bar staff were having about the pump I realise what I got. It was either bitter and soda water or bitter and water, no wonder it tasted odd. We ordered beef croquettes to share as a starter but they never arrived. I had blade of beef with mash and greens. The actual beef was soft and well cooked, the sauce just a bit weird, it tasted like vinegar. As if the red wine hadn’t been cooked out, although I’m guessing this all may have come out of a bag. The greens were pretty terrible, possibly leek tops (the dark green bits), tough with no seasoning, pretty rubbish. Now the really bad bit. The mash was the worst mash I’ve had in my 59 years, truly exceptionally awful. The chef needs to get another job. It had the consistency of congealed wallpaper paste, you could have picked it up in one lump on the end of your fork! Surely whoever put it on the plate realised as they certainly wouldn’t have been able to plate it with a wooden spoon. It was a bit like a Bavarian potato dumpling except harder with no seasoning whatsoever or any hint of butter/milk. Normally I would have thrown it back at the kitchen although it might have injured someone. No I didn’t complain, my wife was loving her burger 🍔 and it was her first lunch out this year since recovering from breast cancer. I didn’t want to spoil the moment. Fortunately she has a great sense of humour and we have laughed about it since. The pub was almost empty, you need to have words with the staff on that day, if they can’t serve a decent drink and simple meal when they’re quiet, then when could they? Sadly it is unlikely I will dare return, I will stop at the Crown almost next door or carry on south to The Mulberry. Maybe I’ll wait a year and try again if I’m feeling brave.

Bit late reviewing but visited on a Monday in August. Good to have a pub offering decent food open on a Monday as not many are. We had dogs with us and were going to sit in the garden, which was really cute but as the sun wasn’t round there at the time we headed inside. It is really nicely done inside with lots of character - really nice setting. We chose a starter to share and a main each. The food was very nice and seemed freshly cooked. Menu perhaps slightly limited but then I can be fussy with what I fancy!!!!! The only criticism is the starter of squid for £9 we felt was very small and therefore very expensive. That was the only let down. Would visit again definitely but maybe watch the starter prices!

Unfortunately one of the bad review I read after we booked our stay at the Swan came true! The room we stayed in, it was filthy. There were litters in the wardrobe and so much dust. Dirty floor in the bathroom and used soap under the shower! with a mold on the walls Breakfast was a big disappointment! Lots of meals had missing/ replaced ingredients. Every single dish we choose we were told that something is different, no ciabatta, no bloomer just white or brown toast. I would call it a SCAM! Lady who served in the morning ( lovely staff in the evening) was extremely rude especially to us. I can’t remember when was the last time someone treated us differently because we are not British family :-( Unfortunately the table next to us got a totally different service. When I ask for water glasses as there was not a single left at the buffet I got an angry look and answer back ; it’s because you are the last people to eat. Let me mention, It was 10:30am the breakfast is served till 11am Also the other family were there who actually ordered after us. My son ordered bacon sandwich it supposed to come with 2 hash browns ( he loves them) Unfortunately the sandwich came with out any :-( When we ask the lady about it she look at me and said: were did you get this from?! , so rude. Lucky I took a picture of the menu so I could prove it. No apologies just : I will get it for you. She also forgot about our double espresso, we have ordered on the beginning. So after asking for it , again without any apology we got single espresso and we got charge an extra £5 for it! I really felt like we should get refund for all of it. Even my kids who were born in UK felt uncomfortable and noticed the difference in service between our table and the other one. I would never recommend this place to anyone,even though the pub is looking lovely

Our group of six walkers were all impressed by the level of service and the quality of the food. We stayed late in the bar playing cards after dinner and were never made to feel we were outstaying our welcome. Rooms were spacious - very spacious - clean and comfortable and the breakfast - both choice and quality - was superb. Our only regret is that we were only in the area walking for two days - we plan to visit again next year and stay a little longer.

We went on Thursday for dinner I had burger which was raw should have complained but didn’t, my husband had fish pie which was really nice he had 2pints I had 1medium wine and it was happy hour which we didn’t know went to pay cash £67.80 got home thought that was expensive then realised had 12.5 % service charge. Which I wouldn’t have paid had check receipt in the pub. So won’t be going back. And you why pubs are disappearing at a rate of two a day.

Big and nicely decorated pub with good pub food, also catering for people with food allergies/on special diet. Unfortunately, not a great choice of drinks.

Over priced menu and poor quality. The side salad was in a small nut bowl and they had the cheek to charge £ 4.75 for 3 pieces of lettuce. The aioli with the 4 prawns was actually only shop bought mayonnaise so not as stated on the menu and they priced it at over £12 ! The smoked salmon was chewy very salty and not fresh. Even the water was warm cloudy and tasted dreadful. We won’t be going back.

I recently visited the area to take my dog to Noel Fitzpatrick. I was alone with 3 dogs but was made to feel to welcome and comfortable. The room I had was big enough for my needs and they had put dog beds, bowls and treats in there for me. The bathroom had a lovely big shower cubicle and I had plenty of towels. The food was delicious and again I never felt uncomfortable on my own. The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. Sue would look after the dogs for me while I helped myself to the buffet, which was a huge help as I was on my own. Fiona, the manager, was also very helpful and friendly and has an incredible team that works with her. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and highly recommend the Swan to anyone visiting the area. I hope to return with my husband.

Super friendly helpful staff, room huge, comfy beds, great selection of teas, coffee in room, all in room facilities great. Food , bar staff fab, cheery bright, full of atmosphere, can be a bit noisy if you wanted to go to bed super early, great location for exploring the area.

What a beautiful restaurant. Fabulous food and wonderful service from a delightful young staff member Ezelle. So friendly and extremely confident and efficient. We will definitely be returning.

This is a pretty pub in a beautiful village which was unfortunately let down by a couple of things. We had a comfy room, the first one we were given had an awful view of a brick wall & the bathroom needed a lot of tlc, marked wall & the flooring was faded around the toilet and shower. The duty manager was a temp standing in for the night and was very helpful, she offered us a different room which was much better. Yet again the bathroom needed a bit of tlc to deal with the mouldy grouting around the shower & again the flooring needs to be changed, faded around the toilet which looks very unpleasant, the cleaning wasn't great & looked like a hurried job. The biggest disappointment was the restaurant, the menu is very limited, the only appealing meal for us was the steak but it was off by 8pm as was one of the more popular starters. Unfortunately we left & went along the road to the Crown & had a great meal. Breakfast however was very good. Such a shame but with some small changes I'm sure it could be a lovely place to stay.

I am so upset with this place I do not know where to start. I was not going to post a review as explained to Eve the new house manager who was very very embarrassed and constantly apologising for the state of the place, I had written to Upham Inns and Booking. Com with no response. I have attached photos to explain how upset I was paying £433 for two nights for very dirty and totally unworthy of the money, accommodation. I have asked Booking.Com and UPham Inns for a refund and not even had the curtesy of a response even sending photos to show how bad the state of the rooms and place generally is. Unless you are paying a very small amount to stay here, it is certainly not worth £215 per night. From the moment of arriving in our room there was a full ashtray on the table, dirty bins, make up all over the soap dispenser, dust and filthy surfaces, front down curtains, stains on the sofa,the air con cover broken and thrown in the cupboard, broken tiles , filthy toilet brush, broken tiles and floor, broken handles etc - we were kindly moved the second night by Eve who was so embarrassed and shown another slightly cleaner room but the state of the room year again with torn furniture, broken handles and tiles, pipes all visible and kicked in walls was really awful. Also it says on the website and all the booking site- Egyptian Cotton Sheets which are clearly not as per the photo. I really didn't want to have to publish this but I am still so upset by the state of the hotel and the amount of many I have had to pay and no response.

We had a super meal in this great little pub in the quintessential Surrey village of Chiddingfold. Chargrilled prime beef burgers, vegetarian Wellington and beef Sunday roast all went down a treat. Awful is the only word I can use to describe our visit! Upon arrival which we had booked we had a questioning look from the waitress and then had to wait for a table to be cleared, we ordered drinks one being a pornstar martini...

I had booked for lunch for two, and they gave us an option of inside or outside table. As there was not a table with sufficient sun cover outside, we ate inside. It is quite rustic, no table cloths, but clean. The staff were friendly...

It was my husband's wake. Everything had been organised in the garden so we were given privacy. The pre arranged meal was served efficiently and drinks ordered were quickly available. Everyone thought the food was just right for the occasion.

Bed uncomfortable. Breakfast not included as stated and was poor. Needs better customer service. Lovely area but stay at the crown

We had a family Christmas Eve supper here, brought forward from Boxing Day, whilst still in Tier Two. We all had a lovely meal though we did think afterwards that the tables were closer than two metres apart & one reason for booking was that it is such a spacious building, however we assume it was all Covid-19 compliant. The only other niggle was the lack of interesting non -alcoholic drinks; where was the Seedlip & why no mocktails for the drivers & non-drinkers? However we all had a delicious meal, the pub was as charming as always as were the staff & it was just so lovely to eat out again; the perfect start to Christmas.

Popped in for a birthday lunch and wish we had booked a room here as we didn't want to leave.The food here is amazing and the menu is out of this world.The chef found out it was my birthday and went into the kitchen and made me a cake!! The waitress couldn't do more for you and said to stay as long as we wanted....We shall be returning again very soon and this time, making a room booking!!

We stayed in room 7 ( reviewed that under hotel). We also had supper here. The menu had a small but diverse selection. I had a bar snack starter - venison and black pudding scotch egg with homemade piccalilli, followed by chicken schnitzel with a sort of Caesar salad and chips - all the food groups. The salad was a whole gem lettuce with dressing, Parmesan and capers so it felt more substantial than a load of chopped leaves. Totally delicious. My husband had chicken and ham presse with lots of toast and the piccalilli and was delighted to find they had calves liver. Also delicious according to him Main meals are around £15 and are pub robust with a touch of restaurant flair, We were too full for pudding.

We stayed in a beautiful room with a lot of space and all the usual amenities you would expect and lots of complementary things, tea , coffee, water, biscuits , toiletries etc. Very comfortable bed, included continental breakfast which was very fresh and more than enough that we didn’t feel the need to pay extra for the cooked version. Food in the restaurant was good with my halloumi and mushroom burger very filling (the downside being the bulk bought straw fries of the McDonald’s variety and the almost slimy sliced gherkins) and the fish pie is excellent , good filling with a thick cheesy cap. Well kept beers, friendly staff, great place to stay. If you find yourself in Chiddingfold they are lucky enough to have another good pub almost next door.
