We’ve had brunch here on a number of occasions and find that the service / standard of food you get really does swing between very good and quite poor, depending on just who is staffing the venue that day. Our most recent visit was further proof of this when we arrived through the car park entrance at the back for our pre-booked table. A friend tried to join us from the street entrance and found the front door locked, despite it being 10.30 in the morning. My wife’s ordered eggs florentine which was inedible. The spinach was so wet it turned the muffin into a sponge, leaving the plate waterlogged. Interesting to note that a lot of the prices seem to have recently increased too. A shame.

We (myself , my husband & mum ) had a fabulous 2 night stay , we had come for a specific purpose - to see where my grandmother had worked & lived in the 1940’s !! And we were not disappointed ! We were very lucky , in that we could check in early & we got a car parking space) . The staff were all exceptional , so friendly & helpful The food (& cocktails ) were delicious , and plentiful . There was a good vibe in this hotel and we would definately return & recommend . Had to give 4 stars for sleep as ( maybe it was the room I’d booked ) the bed was extremely small for the 2 of us !

A visit to this nice looking venue i thought the service would be on point. Oh how wrong i was and the disappointment was it was by a senior member of staff. A simple order of 4 drinks but glasses broken and a 15min wait for the last drink. We all felt like an inconvenience to the assistant manager who was more concerned for the table next to us who got served the wrong tea order. But kept us waiting. When we tried to help out and change the outstanding drink order as we had been waiting for so long ensured we got charged the full price larger. I understand pubs being under tough times but if you treat your customers like dirt then no surprise .. also there was no real welcome and when i tried to exchange pleasantries I just got a huffy response… Just all in all very disappointing and won’t recommend to my social circles, friends and family. Sorry guys 😕

After an enjoyable Sunday afternoon mooching around Godalming a traditional Sunday lunch was in order. Having left it a little late we banked on the Kings Arms being the place to deliver a (very) late Sunday lunch . Pleased to say we weren’t disappointed . From the moment we walked in Ell made sure we felt very welcome and provided exceptional service throughout our stay . The roast beef lunch was exactly what an English Sunday lunch should be - all aspects perfectly cooked and a perfect accompaniment to the well earned Rioja ! Would highly recommend a visit - great food , wonderful staff and service with a particular shout out to the aforementioned Ell ( and thank you Ell for the recommendation - the Bakewell was as good as you suggested !)

7 of us visited today for Sunday lunch although the staff worked hard they were clearly short staffed . The wait for each course was way too long . We had to ask for condiments for the table and when they came the salt was empty. We have had lunch here before which was excellent but not this time I’m afraid . I had the roast beef but it was a bit dry and not pink as I like it . My husband had the pork which was advertised as pork loin on the menu but it was actually pork belly . We do love this place so we hope the criticism is constructive and they can improve

Wanted to capture the relaxing and warm feeling of a great afternoon tea, We had a couple of food related requests which were catered for with no problems and no fuss - this was really appreciated. As it was Christmas we were provided with crackers, which was very much appreciated. The setting was perfect for Christmas, and the staff were helpful and very polite. Scones were fresh, cakes were also good - especially liked the cheesecake and the carrot cake - but to be honest, all the cakes were lovely - and I imagine, homemade. Thank you to the staff at the King's Arms - it was a lovely afternoon which both myself and my friend needed.

We held our wedding reception at the hotel in May! If we could give it 10 stars we would. Food, customer service, rooms, staff EVERYTHING was excellent and the team went above and beyond. The setting was classy and romantic and all of our guests were looked after and treated like royalty. We continue to visit for breakfast, lunch, drinks, coffee and are never disappointed. Highly recommend for a small (40 ish) wedding that won’t break the bank either. And chef makes a wicked pie!

I love a Sunday roast, and since moving to Godalming 3 years ago, we've tried many pub roasts in and around the area- This is the best one by far! The pork loin was delicious and cooked beautifully (and my boyfriend really enjoyed his beef), and the roast potatoes had a crispy outside flavoured with thyme, so tasty. Not like the bland, hard potatoes you get with most roasts. Lots of gravy, lovely green vegetables and roasted carrot too. And the Asian pork belly bites for starter were amazing too! We'll definitely be back!

We stayed here on the night of November 27th until 28th. We were joined by two other couples who stayed, and were joined by another couple for dinner. The accommodation was excellent . We had standard rooms which in most hotels would be classed as extra superior. The beds were large and very comfortable, bathrooms superb and immaculate. Dinner was first class and our waitress attentive without being invasive. This was a reunion and we very much appreciated our table being relatively secluded, and the use of the private sitting room just for us after the meal was unexpected and very welcome. The staff went above and beyond and nothing was too much trouble. This made for an absolutely stunning w/e. Thank you.

The other occasion, popping in for a coffee with our dogs following a walk. On both occasions, the staff were fabulous. Courteous, polite and welcoming. The food and drinks were all really high quality and presented beautifully. The setting is contemporary whilst maintaining a warm and welcoming feel. Definitely worthy of five stars!

We live locally and have been to the hotel on numerous occasions for coffee. And lunch and have always been happy. This time we booked a meal for our friend’s anniversary. It was vey quiet for a Friday eve. Despite this there was a long delay before anyone came to the table to ask us if we wanted a drink. The staff seemed to be occupied with some people at the bar, laughing and talking. Finally we got their attention and placed our order. The starters arrived. The food was ok but my friend and I chose the trout starter and the pieces of trout were tiny. For our main meal two chose the chicken and two the lamb. The lamb was apparently delicious but one of my chicken pieces was slightly pink and I did not eat it. We were then served our deserts without cutlery and all the staff had disappeared! All in all a nice enough meal but service disappointing and it was not even that busy. At no stage did we have a clue who was actually in charge.

My husband and I went out for dinner to celebrate a personal occasion. We'd eaten a number of times here and had previously been happy with the food and service and had no cause to complain. However it has recently changed its menu and prices and we were disappointed with the food and service. Despite the fancier menu and prices one still had to order and pay at the bar. I ordered the Seafood Linguine which, although very tasty, came missing an ingredient, a bed of wilted spinach and the side of garlic bread was far too small, only one quarter of a Panini (about 2" square). We had to call over the waitress to report these issues as we were not asked if all was ok. The waitress did not apologise for the problems. My plate was sent back and I had to wait while I watched my husband eat his meal. When my plate returned there was no apology for their mistake or delay, the spinach had been added to the side of the dish, there was no more garlic bread, and I was abruptly told "that's all you get!". Our empty plates waited a long time before being cleared despite the bar staff being close by and not at all busy. It felt like the waitress may we avoiding us or otherwise disinterested in her role. We were not offered dessert. Since this restaurant has launched a new menu with fancier items like ostrich and wild sheep I would expect them to be making a greater effort to ensure their customers are happy with it!! At very least apologise for their mistakes! Won't be going back!

Having visited in the last year or so, I wasn't that impressed but chose to re-visit due to The King's Arms and Royal's location close to an appointment which was to follow.Local ale is on offer as well as some meat not so often found on menus. This time around though I ordered a pint of Hog's Back TEA and some fish and chips. The batter is of excellent quality, clearly not bought in and made on-site. What made the meal even better was the tartare sauce which is also made on-site. So good it was, that I asked for an extra serving to accompany my meal. The fish and chips was less than £6 yet I would happily have paid more than £7 such is the quality on offer at the King's Arms and Royal.I noticed some other diners eating from their 'Hot Rocks', a fun way of dining where the meat is served seared in the kitchen and you then cook it to your liking on the rock at your table. There are new chefs here and they're very proud of their homemade sauces. Things are on the up here. I would absolutely return and strongly recommend to others.

me and my partner visited the kings arms pub as we heard about the exotic steaks they now serve, I myself tried the kangaroo with warm moroccan salad and sweet potato fries and my partner stuart tried the chips and mushroom fricase, we had no idea what to expect, the curiosity got the best of us but we were pleasantly surprised, the food came out on what was explained to us to be a volcano rock. we cooked our steaks exactly how we wanted, mine personally was medium well, the kangaroo was so tender,i have never tasted anything like it. well done kings arms, your food and your service overwhelmed us both. the only criticism I can mention is our last visit we were served by a gray haired lady dare I say. she clearly didn't want to be there and clearly didn't want us to be as she insisted we order at the bar, and after 25 minutes after we finished our meals and dirty plates infront of us, my partner ordered our desserts only to be told the kitchen closed 10 minutes ago, if she had spent as much effort into our service as she had (convincing the regulars at the bar that the new owners were making more work for her) politely said!! then this pub would have been great, as food here is by far superior to most in the area, im sad to say it is just the elderly lady that let it down on this occasion, negetives aside, our last experience was mind blowing, and I hope the chapman family keep up the good work. we will bring frinds next time.

The bed was big and very comfortable and the curtains were thick allowing complete darkness for a brilliant nights sleep. The bathroom was even better both a freestanding bath and separate shower in our room. Now onto the food, when in the bar/dinig area we learned that the hotel was recently under new managers and when we met them we received a warm welcome and they were very chatty telling us about the history of the building which was very interesting we learnt that there had been a hotel there since the 1300 ' s. But back to the food, it was VERY well priced in my opinion (however I do live just outside London). The menu was comprised of typical home cooked pub grub and the choice was vast. I opted for the sirloin steak which was brought out on a lava stone and cooked in front of me so I could cook it just how I wanted it. It came with chips, mushroom and salad and was priced at around £10. All in all I was very impressed with this hotel especially the food I do recommend ordering something cooked on the lava stones. No this hotel isn't modern and minimalistic, instead it's quirky, spacious and full of character with helpful friendly staff and great food to top it off.Would definitely recommend.

My wife and I popped here this morning for the breakfast....(£7.95 each for everything) Probably the worst breakfast Ive ever had ...the high spot was that sausage was actually ok ...our poached eggs were rock hard the bacon cremated ...cheap baked beans cheap catering type tomato and brown sauce and even the tea as bad ..Did complain when I paid ... to a lady .. who just said oh dear! I didnt want an argument with hr its probably not her fault so I paid in full and will never return...

The hotel looked promising on line but the reality was not really up to the mark. There is a pokey cubbyhole reception desk behind glass - it was not manned and as there was no bell I had to go into the bar to get help. The temperature in the hotel corridors and room was stifling even for February but the room although rather shabby was clean. The carpet however was stained and grubby - Didn't fancy walking on it with bare feet!En-suite was clean, shower was large all the linen was spotless and fresh. The bed had no mattress cover and was not very comfortable, the pillows were flat and hard.It is a pity because all the staff serving breakfast (which is good value) and the cleaners were doing a great job but the place needs a good spruce up as it has become jaded and looks unloved. Unlikely to return.

Staff are really friendly, pub grub is pub grub. Had the combo last night on a volcanic rock, so tasty, it was delicious. Rooms are old but so clean, needs a little tlc in places but on the whole lovely. Worth the visit, will stay again in fact already booked in. Breakfast was hot and the scrambled egg was to die for, gorgeous. Car park is small, but there is another at the rear of the hotel, just a short walk, 2 mins at the most.

I was so nearly put off by the reviews here, but the other half liked the look of this hotel / restaurant, so we walked in without booking in advance. We are so glad we chose to dine at the King's Arms as the food and service were excellent. At present, they are short staffed and advertising for staff, but this doesn't detract from the overall standard of service. Other half had the salmon and crayfish starter with steak and ribs for the main and thoroughly enjoyed it. He used to own a restaurant abroud, so can be a little too observant at times, but has spent the last 3 weeks nagging me to dine here again.

We visited the Kings Arms last a few months ago and had a particularly unpleasant experience. The food was of a particularly low standard and one dish was absolutely swimming in thin brown liquid masquerading as gravy. This was only worsened by the ill mannered individual who later introduced himself as the Manager. The beer (real ale) varied in its quality and although some was totally flat we were refused the ability to change it for ale in a drinkable condition by the customer unfocused manager!

The hotel itself is a lovely building, not sure about the rooms as I have not stayed there and the food is standard pub grub, it does have a beer garden but you have to walk through the car park to get to it.

A very last minute decision to book this hotel via lastminute.com, paid £84 for a double en suite and breakfast. Pictures of decor looked inviting and good location. On arrival we were given a key but were not told about breakfast times, we were not shown to our room. Hotel was far too hot, and I had a very unrestful nights sleep. Nice bathroom though. Did not feel brave enough to try the breakfast. The biggest disappointment was the tv, there was no remote to be found anywhere, and when we spoke to the manager he simply said that there wasn't any spare, and that someone had probably walked off with it. We tried to operate it using the buttons on the tv but the volume control was busted. So no sound. Although I do not choose a hotel based on whether it has a tv or not, I do not feel that you should pay full price for a room that does not have everything that it states it has.In reflection, it is not a bad hotel, but it's not a great hotel either. And certainly not worth the £84 that we paid for it. I would not return.

This sort of hotel is not always known for its food quality. This is a really rare example of how basic British Food cooked on the premises can be delivered to high quality at sensible prices. If my experience over the last few months is continued you can expect really well cooked meals. It may not look the most luxurious or the have all the trimmings but once you start eating this is all forgotten and when you come to pay the bill a great surprise lies in wait.

A nicely decorated old style pub & restaurant with great tasting food! The menu is large with something for every taste. The 2 for 10 pounds meals were a great value. I highly recommend the Greek Lamb Burger!

I have just stayed here and wish I had read all the reviews first. Oh dear, not good on so many levels.I really don't like giving a bad review BUT this Hotel could be so much better with more attention to detail and service. If you want a peaceful nights sleep then it's unlikely to happen here at the weekend! The 'welcome' we received was a bit brash, as if we were doing someone a favour by booking a room. The reception needs a bell? The room was quite out dated and unclean in parts if you looked closely. They should take note of this as people do expect cleanliness these days! I don't like a stained carpet for instance or signs of black mould in the bathroom!Breakfast service was friendly but the food was greasy. Now onto the noise which I accept they have little control over. There is a nightclub somewhere in Godalming and people leaving this in the early hours do shout in the streets. We could also hear a deep thumping bass sound into the early hours. We also had to put up with a lot of noise from other guests in the Hotel. I will leave this to your imagination! The rooms are not very well insulated. I heard other guests moaning about corridor noise and banging doors all night. Someone else in our party was subjected to hearing someone on the loo all night.I wouldn't go back, there must be nicer places to stay nearby.

The worst food I have ever had put infront of me. Was looking forward to a sunday roast dinner with friends and ended up walking out without even eating a few mouthfuls. It looked as if the food had been plated up and swam in the gravy over night and reheated in the microwave as the orders were placed. the food used to be really quality....what happened???

This is a very pleasant local pub/restaurant on the High Street. They serve an adequate range of beers and have a quite extensive menu. The premises is characterful, clean and maintained in good order but is let down by the regular cliente who all too often seen to be drunk and inappropriately friendly (ie. won't go away and will cut into a private conversation without a second thought). This having been said, the reason I go there with friends is that it has very reasonably priced food of a high quality. I can recommend the steak which at two for £10 is amazing value given that it good quality.Maybe not somewhere to take your mum but for a quick feed with some good friends, no complaints.

I am local to the King's Arms and Royal Hotel however I have never been into it until recently. I hadn't heard much feedback from this place which is a shame because it is lovely! To my surprise, the grand room and bar in side are buzzing with atmosphere for late lunch/dinners and they have a lovely outside patio which was well suited to us in the summer. The drinks here are the cheapest in town excluding weather spoons of course, having a pint of carling at 3.00 was a bargain and you even get a loyalty card! The food here is great value to, doing a great 2 for 1 type offer on there food!

I met with a friend at Notcutts for lunch today. He came down from London and hasn’t been before. Based on today’s experience he says it’s worth the journey and wants to go back again! The fish and chips were delicious. Chips crispy on the outside and super fluffy on the inside. Plus they offer HP sauce (his favourite) The quiche I ordered was very generous and served with a big fresh salad. We were advised at the till that there would be a 15 minute wait but it was much quicker and we really appreciated being told anyway. Fresh food/ hot dishes it’s to be expected. Lovely atmosphere. Friendly staff and restaurant standard food. We’ll be back soon.

First visit here for lunch whilst en route to Winkworth Arboretum. Left with very mixed feelings. It's in a nice location with attractive interior decor but... Completely agree with other reviews regarding staff. The girl on the till came to take our order about 3 seconds after we'd sat down; she didn't seem to have a clue how to use the tablet for orders and spent most of her time standing around doing nothing whilst the guy in the kitchen did all the work. As a result we ended up having to wait ages for our food. We ordered quiche + 2 salads and sausage roll + 2 salads. The food was ok but charging £12 for that is outrageous! And to make matters worse, they allow dogs inside and my lunch was ruined by 3 tiny, stinky dogs arriving at the table behind me. In my view, dogs should not be allowed inside where people are eating - it is so unhygienic. Leave them outside! There are better, cheaper cafes around so I suggest you seek them out.
