The Swan in West Berkshire

We came for a meal on my sons 5th birthday. 2 adults and 2 kids under 10. The service was brilliant, the food came out quickly and was really nice. I had the steak, my husband the burger, and kids had cheese burger and fish fingers - everyone was really happy with their food. Not loads of choice on the menu but it was perfect for what we were after. The pub looks great after the refurb and there was a good atmosphere with a mix of people there for drinks / food. Basil was great and made the evening really enjoyable, thank you!

Sea bass was delicious & perfectly cooked. Service was excellent , Basil was friendly ... attentive & offered recommendations . It was my first visit since The Swan was refurbished & I will certainly be back.

Basil was our server tonight, he was very attentive and witty !! He offered great recommendations such as the butter milk fried chicken sharer and the sea bass - the atmosphere was lively and the service was quick. Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff - we will be sure to return !!

Basil was amazing! I really like the fish curry. The unoaked Chardonnay is great but the passion fruit martinis tasted of liquorice strangely. Great for any occasion - cocktails with the girls or dinner with the family. So pleased to have a decent place in Pangbourne.

First time and will definitely be going again. The scenery is amazing and the staff were very friendly. Food was delicious. Parking is a bit of an issue, small car park and people weren't parking the in bays (and making their own bays!) so was hard to get back out of the space.

Great meal at the Swan, Pangbourne. Our waiter, Hubert was very attentive and helped us make great choices. We had the Sea Bas served with a side of roasted white cabbage - highly recommended.

Firstly, I’m super happy to see the Swan open again. Regarding the redecoration: personally I’d have preferred they kept it more traditional pub vibe rather than like a restaurant kitchen - there are 4 different tile styles throughout; looks expensive but not very pubby! Re the good: Amazing ! Very good quality dishes presented well. I had Sea Bass - it tasted fresh and good portion. Mum had the pie and it was delicious, fragrant spiced pork like a Moroccan tajine but in a pie. With excellent roast cabbage ( never thought I’d enjoy cabbage ). Desserts were a little less impressive but good enough. Service was attentive and professional ( almost a bit too professional, again it’s like a restaurant not a pub ). Anyway. Great to have the Swan back and with a great chef. Keep it up!

A very enjoyable unplanned stop after visiting Basildon Park. A great welcome from a very friendly and professional member of the team followed by a much needed lesson in how to pour a Guinness! Brilliant! Plus, possible the tastiest chicken and BLT sandwich I have ever had! Next time we will plan to come here. Highly recommended

My wife and I had Sunday lunch here with two lady friends. The food was excellent and plentiful. I had roast lamb and my wife had the sea bass, both perfectly cooked. The staff are all very friendly and attentive. I should mention that when I tried to book online it said they were full up. However, when I telephoned the lady who answered said they had plenty of room, so my advice is to phone to book, as online obviously doesn't work. After our main course we were offered a selection of desserts, all fattening but delicious, something for everybody. We had wine by the glass with the meal, as we each drank different ones. Surprisingly for a pub the house wines were all very good. I had a Sauternes with my dessert that went down very well. We hope to revisit soon. You do need to book as this pub is very popular and gets full at weekends. This also helps to drown out the fairly vile "muzak"!

Delicious sea bass and pie of the day (spiced pork) followed by knickerbocker glory and apple artic roll. Only point of note was the almond/sugar shard in the desserts - very sticky/chewy. Got stuck on our teeth. Everything else was lovely though.

Popped in with my mates for a quick pint! Nice place by the river Thames, staff very welcoming, and we end up having a huge and delicious burger. Is good to know we have this place only 20 minutes from Reading! Thank you team Swan

The staff were so welcoming, so nice and so helpful, cannot fault them at all! However for £18.50 for a roast you would expect more than 3 roast potatoes. It’s a pub that has been transformed from a pub into the aesthetic of a restaurant. If that’s what you are going for then the food needs to match it. The roast was very tasteless, no seasoning, gravy like water and portions underwhelming. Is it that hard to make a decent roast, or make an average one and charge less.

We dined here with my family for my daughter 16th Birthday as she wanted to go some where special. We were impressed with the new look and atmosphere to match, Our Waiter Basil was Chatty and Entertaining. We ordered various starters, Hot Honey Chicken Wings which were superb , Sausage roll and Maceral pate both were great, Only quibble there wasn't enough sour dough bread as it came with only 2 small pieces, once you had loaded both slices with the generous serving of pate you were left with more pate which had to finished off with a folk. Needed at lease 4 pieces to match the portion of pate. Mains...Ordered 3 Burgers which we all enjoyed, if not a little pricey, came with skinny fries which we requested to swop for the Chunky chips...They wouldn't offer a straight swap, so we had to pay an extra £5 per serving which came in a extra side dish , Trouble with this was we ended up with uneaten skinny fries , Not good customer practice. Ordered 2 flat iron steaks which again came with skinny fries , we prefer Chunky with our steak but most oddly the steak was supposed to be served with watercress , but we got warm wet lettuce instead as apparently they had ran out . we weren't prewarned of this or offered an alternative ? Warm lettuce! Odd choice to serve with a hot steak? Would of preferred a side salad instead.... The plate looked underwhelming with a fairly small sliced steak a hand full of skinny fries and wet lettuce ,wasn't at all filling (Note the weight is not stated on the menu?) for £25 you'd expect a lot more. One glass of wine and 4 soft drinks Bill came to a little over £250 for 5 persons, 2 of which were children. My parents who both had the steak meals weren't at all happy as they came away still hungry. Sadly we wont be returning for the Restaurant food, but would be happy to have snacks and drinks out the back with that fantastic River View!

Not been to the Swan for quite sometime, last time was for a lunch. The refurb has certainly changed the look and feel of the place. music marginally too loud, although we were seated under a speaker. Service was a little slow although it was a busy Saturday evening 01/02/25. Both our starters and main meals were good. dessert however was a new expererience. I ordered a cherry /almond crumble with a custard and requested ice cream instead of the custard. This was noted by the maitress who returned a short while later to inform me that there would incur an additional charge £2.50 to add ice cream. Have never ever over many many years been charged extra for swapping custard for ice cream or mash for chips etc etc - not impressed with that at all. This left a "bitter taste" to my cherry crumble!!!!!!

Lovely pub with what would be a good atmosphere when busy. Food came quickly and was hot but there was a complete lack of seasoning on anything. The Kyiv had no garlic butter in it at all and the chicken wings were so so greasy.

Brilliant place, but since its renovation, it hasn't lost any of its charm and atmosphere. The staff and kind and chatty, and food is excellent. 5/5 brilliant.

The floor staff were very friendly and welcoming in their welcome and service. As it is known, they were closed for a long time due to the overflow of the river, and on my first visit after they reopened, I can say that the atmosphere was better, especially the toilets were very clean and renovated. The floor staff was more devoted than before and they were all very polite. When it came to the menu and the food they were frankly no better than average. We will return again for the wines and atmosphere.

I arrived with my family by surprise at The Swan, we were the first customers of the day. The doors opened and we were welcomed with joyful disposition and a lot of charisma from Simone, who provided us with a different experience with excellent and quality service. The suggestions made by Simone catered to all of our family's tastes and we are sure that we will return to The Swan, it was a pleasure to be with you Congratulations to the entire team, especially to the charisma and attention provided by Simone. This appears to have been refurbished and was amazing..didn't eat here to not booing bit the food looked amazing. The ale and service were very good and not overpriced. Recommend

The Swan is looking beautiful following their renovation, super cosy. I booked a table for 19, which they accommodated perfectly. The staff were so attentive, wonderful with our children and made our visit feel so relaxed, like a home from home. The food was absolutely delicious, everything cooked exactly as requested and no complaints from anyone. Special shout out to Basil, who was just amazing. Thanks so much guys, can’t wait for our next meal.

Had a delicious Malabar curry with monkfish and king prawns that was bursting with flavour. The rhubarb and Aperol spritz was great as well. To top it all off, service from the charming Hubert was excellent. Look forward to returning to try the tantalising desserts.

Really like the refurb of the pub, car park is still a bit of an issue tho as it's to small for the size of venue but not much they can do about that I suppose. Loved that it's dog friendly. Great service, our waiter was fantastic. Food was poor tho to be honest. I ordered the chicken kyiv with creamed leeks, the Kyiv had no filling that I could taste so basically got breaded chicken, also very bland and the creamed leeks were awful. My girlfriend ordered the burger which wasn't very good especially for £20 best thing was the bun. Overpriced for what it is.

Seabass was beautiful! Steak was a bit overcooked in the sirloin baguette as its quite a thin cut of meat. Service was great and the food came really quickly despite of the fact that the place was quite busy. Dogs welcome and they even provide a blanket for them to be able to sit on the furniture.

The new and improved Swan is a must for a lovely meal or a night out in the village. The staff are extremely welcoming and friendly and you'll feel right at home from the minute you arrive. Fantastic food and drinks menus! I can't wait for summer to enjoy the stunning views on the Thames with a refreshing cold drink.

The Swan has been closed for 11 months due to flooding from its idyllic setting on the River Thames. We visited yesterday afternoon for a late lunch/early dinner, eager to see the refurbishment. We were not disappointed - in fact we were absolutely delighted! The men and food presentation has gone up a notch, the staff are friendly, the refurbishment tasteful and fresh looking. We are delighted to see The Swan up and running again as it is within walking distance for us, and for visitors to Pangbourne, just opposite the railway station (trains from Didcot, Reading and Paddington) Dog friendly - customer friendly - perfect! p.s. we were delighted by the prawn curry, cheeseburger, cherry and almond crumble, and rhubarb and custard knickerbocker glory ;D

We met friends for lunch and everything about our visit was excellent. The Swan is a combination of cosy and elegant. The staff were friendly and provided exceptional service. Good wine list and delicious food, especially the desserts!

We went as a group of 4 people. My friends seemed to enjoy their food as they ordered sea bass, fish and chips and a burger. I wasn't as lucky though. I ordered a steak mid rare. The first time it came completely raw in the middle and I had to send it back. The second time it was better but they had forgotten to put any salt in it! I also got a duck egg fried in duck fat, also severely lacking in salt, that was not bad, but not too impressive either. The service was exceptional and the staff was very polite and helpful. They were also quick to recommend dishes when some of us weren't sure what to get.

After the major refurbishment , the Swan is back. Great food, excellent staff in a great location by the river. We will be back thank you for a great lunch.

The staff and owner were cheerful and friendly but the food, bangers and mash, was microwaved and pretty tasteless. The gravy was like jelly dropped on the top.

Our first visit as a family with our 9 months old daughter. Food was delicious! We had roast pork and roasted lamb. Service was excellent and staff was kind enough to prepare a highchair for our little girl, who also enjoyed her roast. We've moved to Pangbourne not long ago and are really looking forward to visiting Swan more often. Lovely place!

Recently local Pangbourne residents. I came to the Swan many years ago and so when my Wife and I moved here we were excited for them to re open. We came on Sunday for Sunday lunch and booked online. We requested a highchair for our 9 month old Daughter and when we were seated the highchair was waiting for us. The service was quick and very friendly (all the staff were interacting with our daughter!) Food was really tasty and we were happy with everything on our plates. If there was anything to say to improve (and this is being picky) it would be maybe a steak knife for the lamb as a normal knife was a tiny bit of a struggle to cut it, but the lamb itself was perfectly pink and soft. The sticky toffee pudding afterwards for dessert again was amazing! Great portion sizes, very reasonable prices. We will be coming back again and again!

We popped into The Swan after visiting Basildon Park. It was decorated beautifully and we were welcomed warmly. We had our newborn baby and 2 year old with us and the server (Hubert) was attentive, helpful, knowledgeable, and professional. The food was well cooked and tasted good. We would happily return. Thank you, Hubert, for making our visit even better!

Table had a great view of the Thames and the service was very attentive especially from Lily.

The Burger was great and so was fish & Chips. Friendly staff, didn’t blink when we arrived early, made us welcome and helpful with menus suggestions.

Enjoyed our evening out. Nice atmosphere and not too busy. Hurbert, our waiter, was an absolute pleasure. Never felt rushed. He made small talk which was nice. He gave some recommendations on puddings and checked in on us occasionally. He asked why we were out and we said for our 20 year anniversary which he congratulated us for. Would recommend going there for a nice evening and dinner out.

Great step up on the reopening post the flood!

Just wonderful, the pub has recently reopened after 11 months due to a major flood. Parking There is some parking or there is a train station just a few minutes walk away Interior Wow wow wow the team have done an incredible job, the interior is beautiful, large bright open spaces with smaller cosy intimate side rooms with sofas and soft furnishings. Warm homely feel. Tables are spacious so you are not on top of each other, and the different sections both inside and outside caters for dining, drinking or just relaxing. Bathroom was clean and bright. The outside space is equally lovely and we cant wait for the warmer weather to sit by the river. Staff Due to newly opening, there were a few new staff, they all introduced themselves on approach, which made you feel immediately at ease, which was a nice touch and all staff were welcoming, attentive and eager to make sure your visit was memorable. The menu Everything sounded amazing and as food was being served on different tables we were constantly changing our minds as it all looked amazing. i had the poached duck egg and hubby and son (piglet) shared the Camembert cheese. We decided to try different mains, i had the flat steak, son had the burger and hubby had the King prawn and monk fish, wow all dishes were tasty, delicious and presented beautifully. Management Anna and Dave were amazing, Anna at front of house, keeps everything runny smoothly and makes sure everyone is having a lovely time, Dave is out back, cooking and keeps the kitchen delivering the amazing food with consistent attention to detail. Overall I would highly recommend, i have not had such a delicious meal in such a beautiful setting for a very long time and although we are 45 min drive away, we will definitely return to sample the rest of the menu and enjoy the atmosphere and surroundings. Well done team, we could not fault any part of our visit and look forward to returning.

This is my first time to visit this pub. I had the roast pork lunch absolutely amazing. The public looks absolutely stunning fantastic service by everyone. I got to chat to the general manager and the host.

Came for dinner with my boss and his family on Monday night. The service, food, ambience was absolutely spot on. Anna, Simone and the rest of the team were massively accommodating and the food, cocktails were superb. Since a change of management in the last year, The Swan has improved drastically. Whilst looking after diners, it also manages to produce a lovely atmosphere if you'd like to go and just a couple of pints. EDIT, 14/12/2024: Lovely to see The Swan back open for business after the nasty floods in January. The refurb has helped install an even even better atmosphere. Still a great pint and really looking forward to come and dine there in the near future- the food has always left me craving the next visit along with a well crafted menu. In addition, fantastic to see the the old staff team being maintained along with new additions who are polite, efficient and offer quality customer service.

Such a beautiful pub. A real tranquil place to unwind with a drink. Drinks are a little pricey but it's well worth paying the little extra to spend some time here.

As expats without family in UK; the staff make us feel welcome from the moment we step inside, as well, as we walk through premises they’ll say a hi, chat when their time permits. & create the warmth of being their value guest. This year our server was helpful Mr.H. Nothing was too much trouble for him. This place is our favourite dining establishment; especially with friends. The staff are always so amazing; friendly and willing to accommodate! The food is delicious and never disappoints. The Panoramic views are stunning and create the perfect backdrop for all their values guests Having dined globally, including at ⭐️⭐️ Michelin Star Restaurants, and IMO:- The Swan, Pangbourne is your Michelin Star restaurant but without the official ⭐️ Title. Its that Good!! Staff genuinely make us feel welcome & their important guests. We Highly recommend this beautiful 17th century listed building in Pangbourne, offering a fresh and seasonal menu every day of the week. We always look forward to our visits to this place. It a special place!💝

The pub cancelled my long-in-advance booking the day before our trip for Sunday lunch with no explanation.

I booked this pub several weeks in advance for Sunday lunch on 14th Jan 2024 and was asked to confirm my booking via email 2 days before. On arrival at the pub, it was closed due to flooding. What a shame! I can imagine it's been a stressful time for the management team but I wish I had received an email or message to notify me. We had travelled over 1 hour by train to get there as part of a birthday treat (walk and roast dinner) for my partner. I had also mentioned it was for a brithday in the booking... disappointing.

Nice little boozer for a pint. Highly recommend on a cold dreich night it was cosy and just what the doctor ordered.

Our lunch here was a delightful treat! The food and service were excellent. The menu offered many interesting, tempting dishes. We cant wait to return.

Great riverside pub serving hearty food 👌 😋 👍

After walking for hours and hungry this was the only place open on Boxing Day, £75 later we were left very disappointed and still hungry. The scallops were undercooked, park barely overcooked, the crab burger was over cooked and the cuttlefish spaghetti was flavourless but was covered in so much chilli it burnt my mouth. The pate was so runny it was like honey dripping off the knife. Menu looks interesting but to be honest it’s not cooked a it should be and overpriced, very disappointed

Staff seem very polite, friendly, and quick to serve. The music was awful and far too loud, but overall, it's warm, cosy, and welcoming Didn't eat but I'm sure it's delicious 😋
