The Sun Inn in Basingstoke and Deane

We stopped off here for a late lunch on a whim during a motorway trip from the south coast to Bedfordshire. (Asked Google to show the nearest pubs/restaurants and this was the nearest that was open for food in the afternoon.) The place wasn't very busy, service prompt and attentive, but not overly so, and food delicious. We both opted for pies; me the Sun Inn Fish Pie and my husband the Cottage Pie - piping hot, very tasty, with a selection of perfectly cooked vegetables. There were plenty of gluten-free options for me, and it was good to have that choice. Portion size was perfect too, not too much to make you feel over-stuffed or the need to leave some, but we definitely feel like we have had a good meal. (My one preference would be for just a couple more green beans on the plate! Not a deal-breaker though 😊.) We would be happy to make a detour here again in the future. Thank you! 😋 (Generally, the restaurant area didn't have quite the atmosphere of the cosier drinks part of the Inn. Having more clientele would help.)

We had a large party of 15, the venue couldn’t have been anymore accommodating and friendly. The food was exquisite and prompt. We are looking forward to visiting again. Thank you Francis and team

We have just visited the Sun Inn for the first time tonight. We were a bit apprehensive when we first walked in as it was so quiet. What a shame, this place should be packed out. The food was absolutely incredible, best food we’ve had in a restaurant for sometime and we eat out quite a lot! Each meal was cooked fresh and I literally couldn’t fault a thing. There were 6 of us and the bill was very reasonable. We will definitely be returning and recommending to friends and family.

Avoid. This place is a rip off. £6.75 for an alcohol free kopparberg is insane. Never coming back here. £32 for 4 alcohol free ciders and a coke. Wow.

had a corporate event here and needed to plan a surprise birthday party so we needed to decorate and accommodate for 50 people, genuinely one of our best events! The service was great, we always were in contact with either Francis or Dominic to check everything was okay and if anything needed to be adjusted. We had a buffet style option and the food went down very well! Will definitely be thinking about coming back here for another event in the future ❤️

Called in for an early meal, only bad comment was the chops with the child's meal were overcooked, but other than that we all had different meals which were enjoyable. Fresh veg.

Visited here last night for dinner. Ample parking and was greeted by a friendly staff member. We shared the platter which was delicious and good value for money. Puddings were exceptional. It was a shame that the pub was not more busy as we had a good experience.

Wonderful food. I had the belly pork and it was cooked to perfection. I also nicked some of my wife's chips and they were tasty and crispy. She loved her burger. Service was excellent and the owner very friendly. Recommended.

Had a great meal on Saturday evening. Lovely welcome. Nice bar and restaurant. The service and food was amazing. Pork belly and Beef ribs. The puzzling thing was we were the only 3 people there between 7 and 9 on a Saturday evening. I feel that with the right advertising and patronage by the locals, it would be one of the best options for a meal out in the area. We will definitely recommend and will be returning soon.

2 roast dinners , one drink each, one wine , one lemonade, £47.45 Beef inedible, no refund Lamb dinner was OK to be honest. No atmosphere, dead. I will be going elsewhere in future for Sunday roast dinner, NOT here

We attended on a January Wednesday, so it was obviously quiet but the fire and the food was fantastic. Dog friendly too. Great place for food and a drink

Used to be such a nice pub, I don’t think the word gastro can be used. The decor is very dated, no atmosphere… and food very basic. Also, £5.70 for an orange juice and lemonade is ridiculous. I wouldn’t recommend!

We went there as a group of 24. Food was served in a timely manor. Was hot and very tasty. Staff were polite. Price for the Christmas meal was a fair price. Would recommend.

What a lovely find On the way back from visiting the new forest and came across this gem... Food was lovely and filling and I would 100% recommend the honeycomb cheesecake its to die for Shame we don't live closer as we would visiting more often

Pleasant staff. Very quiet. Food 1 dimensional. Mash, carrots and a green splodge on every plate weather fish pie, chicken schnitzel, or over fatty beef short rib. Over salty too. Would not visit again. Gastropub I think not.

I can easily recommend this stop. We had mostly fish and chips and some sausages and schnitzel. All food was really good and deserts delicious too. Service deserves some good word too. I would get rid artifitial flowers on the table.

Food and sevice great. Good Sunday lunch. We had four different roasts between us and all four were plentyful and well cooked. Place was a little quiet, we went around 3pm, hence atmosphere rating, but didn't detract.

I visited today after my step fathers funeral at Basingstoke Crematorium for drinks with family. The Sun Inn welcomed us and were friendly and efficient in serving a large party of mourners quickly and with a smile. Would highly recommend this business and found them very reasonably priced

A great find, met my cousin here for lunch as it halfway between both of us. The food was delicious, lots of options (I’m vegan) which was very refreshing as there is normally only one veggie/vegan option in most pubs. The service was great, Dom was very friendly. It was a little quiet as it was a lunchtime. Highly recommend, Will definitely return.

Lovely food and staff , just missed out on a 5 star review because the atmosphere was very quiet like a doctors waiting room . The staff although very pleasant were talking in non English language around us and I found that a little offensive. Toilets were disgusting outdated and smelly . But food was great and hopefully to make this a 5 star location these minor adjustments will be addressed.

Went for Sunday lunch and this pub/restaurant has lost its mojo. Used to be a quality place to be but now has an old vibe. Decor feels like its been left behind. Squeeky chairs and bland table. Food was ok and my daughter loved her mac and cheese. Service was fine but a little quiet.

We had dinner at this inn during our trip to southern England. Beautiful inn with well-kept interiors. Good food and friendly service. Fish and chips good as well as soups and salads. I wasn't 100% convinced by the grilled salmon but it was still decent. Varied menu. Price in the English average (70/75 pounds for dinner for 4). Upon payment we stopped to talk to some customers and the staff and they turned out to be very friendly and kind. Worth a try if you are passing through.

Excellent welcome and very good atmosphere! We came to eat, on a particularly quiet evening, but the Tuesday "bikers" evening promises excellent times :) The dishes are very good, plentiful and well presented. We had a really nice dinner at the Sun Inn. My husband took the Sirloin steak and I took the halloumi salad. It was fresh and delicious. I've looked at the other customer's plate: the pie looks great. The service was very good 👍. Price are also correct. I recommend this place.

Stopped here because it seemed well reviewed but maybe it's under new management. Ordered the burger. It was like a cheap 'burger van' burger. Chewy and tough. I could tell the minute I looked at it. Then couldn't force it down. I didn't say anything in there because my husband finds that stuff too embarrassing. He forced the entire burger down just to be polite! Ridiculous! This isn't just any ordinary mistake. They've deliberately bought a really cheap burger, which I wouldn't serve at home, let alone in a restaurant (and I am not in the business of buying expensive meat either). The burgers, and even the coleslaw, were clearly the really cheap 'value' stuff. Calling itself 'Gastropub'. Would've been better off at Mcdonalds. Dont be in the restaurant business if you hate your customers that much!

We were a party of eight, five adults three kids. We had the Sunday roast, two courses. I had the halloumi for starters, served on a huge salad! Delicious. My lamb was tender, couldn’t finish as there was so much food. Staff could not have been more helpful. Will come again.

We went to the Sun Inn based on a previous experience by my partner a few years ago. It seems the establishment has changed hands in this time and gone down hill considerably. We ordered the lamb roast and salmon fillet and it was disappointing to say the least. The lamb roast consisted of only 2 slices of lamb and the veg was ok, but let down by the roast potatoes, as they were over cooked and hard. The Yorkshire pudding were clearly not fresh but from frozen and bizarrely came with the salmon meal. The staff were pretty non plussed and not particularly engaged. The menu itself was printed in red ink in a hard to read font, and confusingly it contained no prices on the first page and at bottom of the second page it mentioned the prices for 1, 2 or 3 courses. We believe this establishment is trading on its previous reputation, however it does not currently live up to it. The food is just above a Wetherspoon's, but only just.

It's OK, we know a lot of the other customers, but not a place I'd really recommend tbh.

Here for a wake. Only 1 person working. Sandwiches put on table which was in a window with sun shining through, so they soon became stale. Coffee and tea in flasks so serve yourself. Had to search through cups as some were not clean.

They kept the bar open so we could pop in for a late night pint, so thank you.

The food was very good but the experience was not. Despite me booking online at least 10 days before and receiving a reminder email the night before we went the welcome was very lacking and no table had been laid for our party and they claimed they didn’t know we were coming! There was a large birthday party in swing in the bar and as we had a dog with us we weren’t allowed to sit in the restaurant so we were asked to go the large room the other side. We had to push past the party with my 96 year old aunt in tow. We only managed to order a main course as the service was so slow.This was a birthday celebration for one of our party. No apology despite our comments. We have eaten at the Sun Inn many times in the past but not since it obviously changed hands. Sorry to say we won’t return which is a shame as food was nice but can’t trust them to be prepared for us and that we would end up in a corner far from anywhere again.

Such a disappointment. Our first and last visit under the new ownership. We arrived on time. One person serving at bar showing no interest in us. We had our dog (allowed) so had to sit in an empty annexe not one table set up. What was really incredible was the fact that there was a full blown birthday party taking place next to annexe and overflowing into annexe with children screaming and running around and an external door being opened and closed constantly as the party guests went out for a smoke or took a dog out. We could hardly hear ourselves. We should have left but my sister had brought our 96 year old aunt and we had nowhere else to go. We stayed, we eventually got served by the one other person serving. The food eventually came, nothing special, not “gastrofood” just pub food. We are the meal and left. Never going back. No apology from the manager, no understanding that if he had told us there was a party taking over the pub we would have found an alternative. He had called the previous evening to confirm the reservation! Lots to change and lots to learn. It really was a waste of hard earned money.

Another lovely dinning experience with family at The Sun Inn. Great customer service from the front of house team, always welcoming and accommodating. Good selection of dishes on the menu including several vegetarian and vegan options. Our menu choices were delicious, piping hot and nicely presented as always. We will be visiting again soon ….

Lovely food all cook hood prices

We had a truly wonderful meal and it was such a shame we were the only ones but that added to making it feel special. Lovely fresh produce and really nicely cooked. I shall be back.

It has new management since my last visit before covid and unfortunately it's lost its way.

Had a really enjoyable dinner here with an excellent steak and generous portions of sides - potatoes, onion rings, salad, tomato and mushroom. All well cooked. Peppercorn sauce was good too. The staff were very accommodating and attentive. It was a cosy with a nice ambience. I would definitely return.

We were celebrating a family birthday and they couldn't have done more to make our evening a wonderful experience. We will definitely go back when we are in the area and would recommend to others.

Was here for a wake and was lovley

My friend and I wanted to grab some quick food before we did a dance show. We just wanted some simple chips to take away but on asking if they served food they refused to serve us as we had no ID. I don’t know of any lawful reason why we couldn’t be served food to go at 6pm. Felt like we were judged on our appearance as we had our hair and makeup done for a show. Just a bit shocked by the blunt refusal and definitely won’t go there again. Our ages are actually late twenties and early thirties just didn’t have ID as popped out for food..

Nice gastropub with a full menu

The front of house staff make dining a memorable experience. The food is fresh, well cooked and presented. Just a pity more diners haven’t found out about this venue. More diners would enhance the atmosphere.

This pub/restaurant is wonderful. The staff are absolutely amazing and the food, omg you've got to try it. I attended my cousin's wake, the staff went above and beyond with the catering and looking after my family and friends. If I lived in Hampshire, this is where I would go too for my food, the beer garden is lovely and clean. I could not fault it, my experience here was excellent and I'm fussy. Thank you, to the staff behind the bar and the staff in the kitchen. You made a very sad day, better.

We had a work social meal at the pub last night which catered for 25 people.it was very well organised ! Food was amazing and Joel really made sure we were well looked after. Would highly recommend.

Had an absolutely delicious meal here with my better half. The décor is well presented and sets a nice ambience. Excellent leisurely lunch with family. Friendly and attentive service and courses very nicely presented and the sauces with the mains were exceptional. I had a starter, the Whitebait, very generous portion and crisped perfectly. For the main course I chose the pork belly which came with a delicious red wine sauce. Only very minor observation was that the base was a bit crispy for my taste but I know a lot of people prefer it that way. I enjoyed it though, nicely seasoned and the vegetables complimented it very well. Very quiet for a Friday lunchtime but a good experience nonetheless. We'll be back.

Not our first experience there, so we know what they can do, BUT - Has it changed hands? It was Mother's day, so some excuse for longer than usual wait. The staff were very helpful with a wheelchair, couldn't fault them on that. However, the lamb roast was almost inedible for an elderly person - possibly a wrong choice, but very disappointing, none of the meat could be eaten! Have to say the Creme Brulee was good. Expensive but worth it for a special occasion. Would we go back? Umm!?
