A lovely way to celebrate my Granddaughter’s 18th Birthday - fine dining and good service with a celebratory cake to round things off. The view from the restaurant is amazing and added to the ambience of the meal.

Loved to come here as a child and enjoy the real #fawltytowers experience but sadly, it has gone off a cliff. Beer was straight from London high volume produced wizz. Food was over priced, low quality cack that I’d expect from a Harvester, not a boutique in Hope. The “fresh BBQ” I saw was lit behind the bar, great looking but was not used at any stage for the prep of our “straight from the BBQ” lunch. We had the BBQ Prawn sub which had two deep fried prawns in a huge bread roll with some salad leaves, a kids hotdog which was the same bread roll with a three inch thin sausage in it and nothing else. No chips. Nada. Finally, I had the chorizo, peppers and potato which came “highly recommended” by the bar maid, with a side of corn on the cob with coriander, chilli and lime. The latter BBQ’d corn on the cob but the closest its come to lime, chilli and coriander was the refrigerator they were stored for a week in before being thrown into a box and presented to me! The chorizo sausage was less than two inches in length (or so my wife says!) and it was accompanied by eight boiled new potatoes and two strips of fried onions and peppers. Utterly despicable for £10! Yes, Im all for supporting the local shops and restaurants in this post apocalyptic C19 world but I sincerely hope this place goes bust ASAP and is replaced by someone who cares about customer care and value. Please do better. Staff were very nice but that is all.

We love coming here when visiting my daughter, who lives nearby. We love the views of Hope Cove from the terrace in the summer, with a drink and usually a cream tea to follow. In the winter we would sit in the window bay and sofa, looking out and even the rain couldn’t detract from the view, especially with a mug of hot chocolate. However, now under new ownership after a refurbishment and what a disappointment! On walking onto the terrace from the car park the first thing that caught my eye was a row of rusty metal, café style, tables and chairs. Apart from being rather uncomfortable, the amount of rust and dilapidation must surely make them a health hazard. I certainly would be very apprehensive of letting any member of my family sit there for fear of cutting themselves. I can’t believe that any hotel would think it acceptable to put out such awful furniture to be used by visitors and guests. The bar area has now been moved and was rather unwelcoming. No normal pumps, but a piece of paper given to you with the available beers written on. No lemonade or cola on tap, so a pint of cola involves buying two bottles. No friendly greeting – as if it was too much trouble to serve you. We had also been looking forward to having our usual cream tea, but disappointing to hear that they were no longer on offer. The enlarged dining room looks lovely but at the expense of the comfy seats which have mostly gone, so unless things change there will be no more winter visits for us. What a shame!

Do not pay attention to poor reviews! My husband and I stopped off here on our way home from the area. It was last minute and owing to the low cost we weren't expecting much. We could not have been more wrong! We received a fantastic welcome, as did our dog! The facilities were as described, food excellent along with the service. I would highly recommend this hotel and wish them increased sales in line with their planned improvements for the 2019 season!

“Another wonderful stay at this special place. Comfortable, clean rooms, nearly all with wonderful sea views, delicious food and such a warm and friendly atmosphere. A place where you really can unwind and relax and enjoy being looked after. Excellent food, breakfast, lunch or evening dinner, special thanks to the chef for helping me put on a few pounds I am sure, but then plenty of walking in the area, with the most outstanding views, to help work them off!! Thank you to Michelle for the welcome, and also to Sylvia and Nuno who give such an excellent and professional service to all guests, whether like me returning, or first time visitor, nothing is too much trouble for them to help you enjoy your stay. A special mention to Nuno who has been there 3 years now and is a credit to the hotel. His customer service to all guests is first class and also the other staff look to him for advice, a very professional, competent person who so obviously enjoys his job and this comes across in the service he gives. It goes without saying, already booked to return.”

We went here several times. It’s in Inner Hope Cove away from the busier more lively Outer Hope. We had a lovely cream tea one day. Fresh homemade scones and lots of jam and the all important clotted cream. Lovely terraces to sit on. We had a fabulous Pina Colada made by the Portuguese waiter, it was gorgeous, could have had several more! It’s a lovely little hotel, excellent views, friendly welcoming staff. I would definitely go back and it became our place to go to while staying in Hope Cove because it’s just that bit away from the main crowds and offered tranquility in this beautiful part of the world.

The Hotel is situated on a hill going down into Hope Cove. It has a great view overlooking the sea, harbour and local cliffs. The car park takes about 10 cars but there is ample parking opposite. The staff here are lovely, being polite, friendly and helpful and the food and drink cannot be faulted. We stayed for 4 nights and our room was also good with two singles pushed together to make a double, a good sized bathroom with a practically new shower, and fair amount of room. The bar area is quite large with ample seating and a veranda outside where you can view the cove and harbour. Not too cheap but worth the money bearing in mind the facilities and staff.

We were staying in outer hope, but couldn't get into either of the inns to eat this night. So walked along the coast path to inner hope where we had noticed that the sun bay has a new chef. The hotel reception area was quite quiet. We were quickly attended to with drinks and menus. We ordered parsnip crisps to have with our drinks. These were clearly freshly cooked and lovely. If the dining room had a much needed makeover this would be a very desirable place to come for a great evening meal. The food was exceptional, the new chef has come up with imaginative dishes, which were cooked perfectly. We would highly recommend the sea bream and lamb main courses. However, when we ordered I asked whether vegetables and potatoes were included in the dish and was told no, but they could order me a side dish of lyonnaise potatoes. This wasn't in fact needed, as my dish included lovely potato and fennel. The wine list does not include a complementary selection to go with the food! It is basic, good wine, not expensive. But a few well chosen wines to complement the food, including a desert wine, would make the whole experience better for those who appeciate these things! Finally we waited ages for desert (which was lovely when it finally arrived) and didn't receive any explanation...

This was a real find. The menu is exciting, different and way above others in the immediate area. More importantly the quality of the food was superb, perfectly executed and beautifully served. The atmosphere was uncluttered, peaceful and spacious (we ate fairly early in the evening) and the service was exemplary. No, better than that, the two staff who served us went out of their way to help us through the menu to lead us to our seats and to attend to us throughout. Very kind. Views are excellent and its location lovely, just out from the "outer hope" area which is always a little crowded. The only let down is that the decor in the public rooms, the quality of the furnishings and the carpets is really shabby. Its a place which has certainly upped its game in terms of the restaurant, but looks tired and worn in the public hotel areas. A shame because this is a really fine place to eat and worth the trip. Easy parking by the way.. a great relief around the South Hams.

To be up front I live locally and frequent this hotel to dine on a fairly regular basis but thought I should share this with you. I've just had the most marvellous three course lunch at the Sun Bay Hotel restaurant courtesy of the new Head Chef Dan. Started with tomato consommé, main course of Moroccan lamb and finished off with chocolate and hazelnut delice. It was superb, devine, heavenly and many more superlatives besides. This is top notch cuisine at very affordable prices and you would be very happy being served this in any swanky London restaurant. If you love your food and the finer things in life then you'll will love this. My only disappointment was that lunch had to come to that inevitable end. If you are in the vicinity this is a must do!

The warm welcome, the friendliness and efficiency of the Staff, particularly Nuno and Luke, and the high quality of the food all served to completely justify this choice of venue by our, local to Hope Cove, friends. J'ai adoré mon dessert "Sticky toffy pudding". Le serveur était très sympathique mais un peu too much ! Salle agréable avec vue sur la crique.

On recommendation from friends we stopped here for cream tea and weren't disappointed! Firstly, the location is stunning. Whether you sit inside or outside on the terrace you have a view over the sea. The decor is a peculiar mixture of old and new. There are several different seating areas inside - modern open coffee area, some smaller more traditionally decorated areas to sit and some very uniquely decorated cubby holes. There's even a nice warm fire to sit by on winter days. The cream tea included warm scones and lashings on jam and cream as well as a generous size pot of tea. If you order coffee don't expect any of those silly lattes or cappuccinos - just a good old cafetière and a jug of hot milk. A pot of tea or coffee will easily be enough for 2 people and prices are very reasonable.

We stayed in a Cottage in Hope Cove and visited the Sun Bay for a drink the first evening we arrived. As non residents we were made most welcome and sat reading books from their book shelves while having a drink. We returned on two separate occasions for dinner, and on both the staff were very good and provided good quality service and looked after us. The restaurant was busy on both occasions and the ambience good, the first time my pork tenderloin was a bit though which was a disappointing but it did not put us off and we went back. Some walkers had come off the beach with their dogs and were having cream teas in the lounge which had beautiful views overlooking the cove, all were made welcome. The Sun Bay provided a large menu as well as a set menu which my husband eat from; it gave a good choice and was excellent value, two courses £16.00 three courses £20.00. View and location for Inner and Outer Hope Cove are excellent. Coves are really one long beach but accessible during low tide or via short but steepish walk next to the hotel. A traditional bucket and spade feel to the area - supported by good pubs and seaside shops. The hotel's strong points are service, location and food. Very welcoming, relaxing and dog friendly (dogs permitted everywhere apart from restaurant - although allowed in conservatory where we took breakfast). Prices very reasonable at just £105 per double per night (to include - a very good good - breakfast). Rooms are basic and in line with price but clean and offering TV and Wifi (just - 2mb - this is Cornwall after all!). Each styled slightly differently but on basis we only spent an hour a day awake in the room who is to complain if the decor is a few years out of date? Ideal family hotel. Enjoy.

We have eaten in the Sun Bay a couple of years ago and were very pleased but this time we did not feel the same emotion. In fact we returned on the strength of the many favourable reviews published and the personal recommendation of our local Taxi Driver. The aperitifs were disappointing, the wine was absolutely not to our liking and the quality of one of the main meat courses was unacceptable and bland. The Manager was not present on the particular Saturday when we dined and so I returned the next morning to discuss our grievances. He totally disagreed with and took offence about the criticism of the wine and my comments regarding the aperitifs but did considerately refund the money paid for the offending main course. In his opinion our tastes are not on a par with most other people and so we will not be troubling him in the future but other customers should make their own decisions. So many reviewers can't be wrong can they?

Popped in for a cream tea on a wet afternoon. We were welcomed by a very friendly and knowledgeable member of staff who promptly took our order. Excellent warm scones, individual pots of jam and a generous portion of clotted cream. Four very happy customers!

We were lucky that the sun was with us, so we could sit outside. Lovely views and a nice relaxing 'sit'.Our daughters ordered inside and later found out that something hadn't been clear ... We are Dutch, and sometimes things do go wrong while speaking a different language. Anyway: when our Devon cream tea arrived we explained what was different to our expectations, and in no time at all it was adjusted! With a very friendly smile of a waiter from the Azoren and thumbs up from Keith .... it made our day!The Devon cream tea was marvellous in itself and for us it was a golden end of a great hike we had along the beautiful coastline near Hope Cove.

A rather tired looking hotel, trapped in a 1970's time warp. In need of investment and new energy. Food was fine but unimaginative - served with very mediocre salads. The staff were helpful and efficient but the hotel needs to up its game, with so much good food to be had in the area. If you are 70+ and like plain traditional food then it might be fine. Probably best for a simple lunch on the terrace on a sunny day.

We went for sunday lunch, booked for 1pm, after reading the reviews, we got there 5mins early, waitress asked us to sit in the lounge and gave us the sunday lunch menu, we could see into the restaurant, there were two people in, over 35mins later, we were still sat there, another 4 people who had been sat in the lounge had gone in but the two others had left. I asked the waitress what we were waiting for, and she sai were full everyone booked for 1pm, I can see your not full I said there's no excuse. When we finally went in after about 40min wait, there was a total of eight including us two!! Having said all that the dinner itself was very nice, roast beef was lovely, but she never told us there was a different menu we could have picked from, just not good enough.

We had a beef sunday lunch. It was tasty but the knives were blunt so difficult to eat. Yorkshire puds were disapointing but being from Yorkshire we have high pud standards. Lovely view over the cove.

There is something simply splendid about dining at the Sun Bay Hotel. The view is great and the weather is usually sublime; so much so that I often hear people say "you could be anywhere in the world". It's true!! I live locally and am known to frequent the South facing terrace of the Sun Bay on the odd occasion ;). My absolute favourite pastime is to sit on the terrace overlooking Inner Hope harbour and Bolt Tail headland, watch the comings and goings between sea and shore and avail myself of the superb offerings of 'Moules Frites' or seafood platter washed down with a crisp glass of dry white wine. I would add without reservation that I have tried many if not most of the dishes offered on the menu for lunch and dinner and have enjoyed every meal. What tops it all for me is that all this is comes about by the good graces of calm, efficient and extremely helpful staff. This contributes to what I can only describe as a 'civilised dining' experience which applies to all, whether you are on your own, as a couple or group of friends or family. Yes I am biased but will hold true to my word and strongly recommend that if you have not tried it give it a go!!!!!!

I've just been for the most amazing lunch at the Sunbay hotel in Hope Cove. The service was second to none, the restaurant manager was so welcoming and attended to our every need. The food was amazing, we will defiantly be dining there again and recommending it to our friends. Top quality food, service and location.

We went for a meal here as we had heard that the food was rather nice and the location stunning. On arrival we were escorted to our table by a friendly waitress and drinks brought to the table quickly. The food itself was delicious and the whole experience totally charming, we then went for a little walk down the beach afterwards to try and walk off some of the dessert. Will def be visiting again as very reasonably priced considering the location and standard. Would recommend this to anyone and especially if you want a little romantic meal for two in a stunning location!

We have had several meals at the Sun Bay and have never been disappointed. The food is well presented and of a consistently high standard. There is a sun terrace which has the most amazing views - perfect for enjoying a lunch in the sun or a few drinks! What more could you ask for!

We booked for Valentines weekend, and decided to eat in the restaurant with friends on the Saturday evening. My first thought was that the menu was limited. How wrong can you be ? The food was superb, cooked to perfection, beautifully presented. Decor was lovely , service also excellent. We were all impressed. In addition careful consideration was given to presentation at breakfast. My partner had the full English, again cooked to perfection, as was my fish. We will definitely be returning for our anniversary next year.

We were camping at a local campsite bank holiday weekend and walked into Hope Cove from the site. There was a festival in the cove that weekend and it was very busy. On the way in we walked past the Sunbay Hotel with its lovely sun terrace and decided to stop for a drink, the service was very good and they had lobster on the menu so we decided to give the busy cove a miss and booked a table here. Glad we did, nice starters, I had mussels with a lovely sauce, adventurous hubby had pâté which he loved, then I had the lobster, very good and hubby had mixed grill ( on the overdone side that's why I gave 4 stars), they even asked if I would like to see the lobster before it was cooked! Overall nice staff, nice location, my food very good, other half 50/50 on food, nice experience would return.

On a sunny evening this is a perfect spot to sit inside or out and enjoy the amazing view with a cool drink. A group of 11 of us including children walked down from a nearby campsite for a few drinks and a meal. However, the food portions were too small in our opinion. We all thought so, including the children and were all hungry afterwards. We are not large people and don't consider ourselves huge eaters so don't think it was our expectations at fault. The food was reasonably priced but not for the portion sizes. Service was great and all staff really friendly so it was a shame it was spoilt by this. Would definitely go again for the view and a drink though!

Stopped here for dinner last week, on first impressions it looked a bit fawlty towers (not sure why!) but we went in with two small children (6yrs and 9 months) and the staff were very helpful, pre ordered our food (started at 6.30 and we arrived at 6) and served us drinks and nibbles in the lounge.Dinner came and was really tasty, i had fish and chips, fish was moist and batter crispy, made on site and really good. Wife had trio of fish which was reportedly fantastic. Son had sausage and chips and he asked the next morning when we could go back as the sausages were ace. Only complaint could be that portions not massive but by the time we'd had pud - cheese cake and sticky toffee pud - we were stuffed.

I loved this pub. We walked from Salcombe and it was well worth it (don't worry, you can drive there too). It had the feel of a genuine pub with some good beers that happened to do great food also. I had possibly the best burger I have had in a long time and my wife had a fantastic steak sandwich. Both were freshly prepared scratch. They have vegan options too. I notice some negative reviews, mostly due to poor service. We arrived at 12 noon on a weekday in October. Even so, the place was full by the time we left, so it is clearly a popular place. The service we experienced was without fault. I hope our experience is the norm.

We stayed 3 nights, Fri Sat & Sun, very comfortable well furnished room, ensuite, with breakfast (diy) available in little kitchen down the hall. Wonderful old world inn, great bar, and bar food til 8.30 (lunchtime til 5 on Sunday, no evening meal). Very friendly and helpful staff, and wonderful location in the wilds of Dartmoor.

Great late lunch with family, biggest haddock I have ever seen. Had that locally caught ling, calamri and my wife just cheesy chips. All with crispy fresh batter, chips golden but soft inside. Even cheesy chips were top, 1/2 chips, then cheese, more chips and topping of more cheese. All top quality, even the ice cream and with nice pints of Otter, bitter & ale on tap. Great way to end off long walk on the beach. You won’t be disappointed..
