Stopped for a quick lunch. The food and bread was absolutely 5 star. The IPA was delicious. Service was friendly and efficient. Very good value too. I had been in Scott’s of Mayfair the day before and I preferred this. It’s so good it’s convinced me to move to Totnes 😀

Serving staff were quite rude. When serving us with a raised eyebrow of what do you want, I ordered a drink for my friend, the lady asked quite rudely, 'is that all' and turned away from me to talk to a guy also behind the bar, ignoring me for an age. When I did order and we were served our drinks....there was a real air of them being put out we were there at all. Not friendly at all. Later on a group came in that needed a big enough table for them all...the male bar staff seemed to think this was going to be hard. When they suggested a table by the window, the bar guy said 'that means I've got to clean it' ...which he did. But not in a way that would make someone feel especially welcome. Nice. The general tone from the bar staff was that they would rather customers were not there at all. Don't need falling over with gushing hospitality, just don't be rude and superior.

The Food is great, really great food to share, high quality ingredients, flavourful marinades and Sauces! Alot of adaptable vegan options! Been 3 times in the last year and food is always great! Atmosphere lovely and staff are always so nice and funny! My only little thing is that I didnt think the negroni was the best! Didnt have enough of a bitter edge and that depth of flavor! But thats maybe a prefrence

Had a very good meal last night. The menu is not the usual fare but very good with lots of flavours and textures. It is certainly worth the visit. We all enjoyed it very much. Our one comment would be the King Oyster Mushroom main could do with a bit more mushroom and bit less squash, but the pickle radiccio a nice counter flavour. We also could recommend the Venison Birria.

Now I’m not into the organic and ethical eating malarkey, but having popped in for lunch with my wife, I can report that the skate with caper butter sauce, new potatoes and fennel was the best fish dish I think I’ve ever eaten. My wife’s aubergine dish was also terrific (she tells me). The staff were very friendly and attentive but not too much so, and the ambience was relaxed and comfortable. Yes, a little bit pricey but absolutely worth it for the experience, the memorable dishes we had, together with well-kept beer and glass of rosé. Will definitely go again when in Totnes.

We visited the Bull Inn for lunch. Quality is excellent, but prices are high and quantities are small. The bowl of lobster bisque with one slice of focaccia was lovely, but it cost £15. There is an eco focus going on. In the well maintained loos, I looked for the soap dispenser. I could find none. But what is that light coloured thing projecting from the wall? I had thought it was a handle, but it was a communal piece of soap.

The restaurant's vegan options are consistently the best vegan food I've ever had, having been vegan for over 7 years. This is my go to destination for any special occasion. Please keep the outstanding, innovative vegan dishes coming. My one concern is that there aren't enough - when the vegan dishes are this good you don't need to have such a high ratio of non-vegan dishes. As the ethos of this place is all about sustainability, push the plant-based dishes more! Also the Bull Inn's chef (is it Johnny Tillbrook?) really could do with opening a school and teaching other plant-based/vegan chefs about balance of flavours, textures, and the thing that frustrates me the most about other places: incorporating plant-based proteins into dishes! He uses tahini, almonds and pumpkin seeds among others exceptionally well. My one request if I had one? Work your magic on the almighty bean. How to turn beans into a beautifully refined dish? If anyone can do it's this team, and I'd love to see the result. All in all, everyone needs to try the vegans dishes to truly understand what our food is all about. They inspire me. Starters, mains, desserts, always outstanding.

We chose the Bull because of its reputation for excellent food and sustainability (in particular, the fact it has signed up for the WildFish off the table campaign against farmed salmon). It did not disappoint. We ordered 4 small plates which ranged from very good (sardines w/green sauce, venison with baba ghanoush) to really excellent (monkfish, chicken terrine). They were all inventive, cooked with real skill and precision and let their wonderful ingredients sing. We then shared a fabulous tiramisu. The wine list is clearly curated by someone who knows what they're doing - I strongly recommend the champagne. The service was well pitched - friendly, attentive and efficient but in no way overbearing. And the place had a real buzz to it. I would strongly recommend!

Lovely food, really exciting flavours, ambience and friendly staff. Only issue i have is there is nothing on the menu for kids, I’m not talking turkey twizzlers, but it’s all adult portions and certainly more for an adult palate. Just something to feed the kids so we parents can enjoy some good grub would make it excellent.

My husband and I came here for our anniversary meal on a Sunday lunch time. We figured we'd be getting Sunday roast, but were momentarily disappointed to find out there was no roast menu! However, the food we did have was absolutely out of this world. The chef plays with unusual tastes and I'm guessing is a bit of a trendsetter because there were some unlikely but amazing pairings on the dishes we had. All the food was fresh and delicious, so thank you for making our non-roast meal so incredibly epic!

We went here for a special birthday meal and sadly it was a truly disappointing experience. I have had a number of meals here and not had this experience before, so it was all the more disappointing given the occasion. One starter (there is only one starter on the menu), two small plates and a dessert were unavailable. Usually we wouldn’t mind this but the menu is very limited, especially for vegetarian options. When charging these prices we felt it wasn’t really acceptable to have such a number of items run out. We had two mocktails and both lacked any flavour at all, they mainly tasted like soda. We could see they were busy, but the service was extremely slow and not personal at all. We expressed our upset at the amount of food out of stock and explained how it was a special meal. We said this in a way that was really just conveying our disappointment and not in a rude manner at all. The waitress just said sorry but it had been a really busy night. However, this is no excuse for running out of items on such a limited menu. We booked this meal in advance so expected to have all the options available. Although I have visited The Bull frequently over the years, I truly feel let down and I don’t even feel any understanding was shown when we expressed our disappointment . Regrettably I wouldn’t recommend and will not be visiting again.

Very disappointing for a special occasion. I was greeted as Daniel having spelt out my name phonetically several times on the phone, I don’t find that to be very respectful and I generally found the staff to be indifferent to our arrival. Our table was pointed to for us to seat ourselves and I felt nobody represented your business well or professionally. I was pleased to try the food though felt the small plates were a little too small to be shared and particularly the tomato salad overpriced for its small size. Compared to some great restaurant experiences there is a lot left to be desired for the service at the Bull.

Now I don't often wax lyrical about a place to put food inside me that will, within 12/24 hours be in a toilet bowl, but I have to about here and so I'll begin. First I would like to say how wonderful it is to find a little bit of London right here in Totnes, yes, here! I'd been hoping I'd see some as there's not much else to do really apart from the sea, moorland and cheap tasty cafes nearby, I mean who these days wants cheap?? Ughh not I sir! What was an off the cuff visit turned in to a cacophony of all the London sounds you may be missing such as many proper riche socialists all earnestly discussing how to put an end to world poverty and racism, alongside drinks and food prices to match any of those in Shoreditch or indeed Putney so you'll feel right at home. I had the Pangritata and Mrs M had the Bass with a glass of wine, all coming in at a cost you'd want, ney demand, from such a wonderful place as here, I won't be gauche about how much we spent but to say you could buy several orphans an education at a Herefordshire public school for several years with the money we spent is an understatement, a wonderful, beautiful, organic and NOT over seasoned understatement. This is the kind of place to escape those local Devon types and feel safe and coddled in the warm cosy arms of London, breathe it in Ptolemy and Jocasta, breathe. It. In. Ethos 5* Organic 5* Felt level 5* Smug level 5* Everything about this trip was sublime and really did make me thankful that moving down to Devon wasn't the hillbilly risk I thought it was going to be for our family! Thank you for making us feel so welcomed in your local eatery and for keeping those damned pitchfork locals away from us and down in the favelas where they belong. Keep on doing what you're doing and bringing back a little of London for all those who miss it. Bravo. Bravo.

2024 update. I've been going to the Bull Inn quite a lot recently since learning its open from 8am as it is a hotel open to the public from this time. They offer barista made coffees, but I just go for the Americano. Be careful of seagulls grabbing your food if you leave it in the outside tables! .I've only been here for cider, so can't speak for the food, but the cider tasted like REAL cider (5% on the far left tap), and offered a taster first, friendly staff, chilled vibe, nice building, and definitely will go back.

This is a lovely looking restaurant but woefully overpriced. I would say London prices. Either up the portion size (I would suggest by a third at the very least) or put the price down. 50 quid for a few small plates of food without drinks is exorbitant. The food was ok but quite oily and I would go to a simple vegetarian or vegan cafe in Totnes if you want delicious fresh veg.

Didn't appreciate the politics. Came for food and drink, not a notice board on entry celebrating people who have lost their jobs, affecting their lives and their family's. The credo seems to be local produce, but the air miles involved in the wine and soft drinks seems a little hypocritical. A slightly overpriced, mainly vegetarian menu. Food we had was very tasty but for the younger generation, if you are 40 or under this may be the place for you.

We went for a belated Mother’s Day celebration for lunch having heard good things about the food. Clearly a popular place as was packed. There were small plates and mains. When asked the size of the small plates the waitress said more like a starter portion but also suggested 2/3 if you wanted that instead of a main. What I couldn’t get over was that the starters were approx £13 each. We ordered the leeks starter which she recommended and when it turned up it was one small leek cut up for £13 which we thought was very expensive. Also homemade cordial tasted like water with squeezed lemon or lime - very weak and no sweetness. Our bill was £160 for 4 mains and one starter. No puddings or wine. These are London prices. Go for a special occasion unless you don’t mind paying over the odds for veg.

We keep meaning to have a few pints with bar snacks but we’re again enticed by the main menu. We had a couple of plates. I had the mushroom and then the charred leeks. She had the monkfish and then the lamb chops. All very tasty. We were coaxed into an unusual rose based mostly on the value of a carafe. We had dinner here in January and again in February as a group of 3 friends. A beautifully decorated restaurant with character. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. The menu itself is so inventive and, for a group of foodies, it’s difficult to choose just one thing. This is where it’s so lovely to be able to order a few small plates (we think 3 each with bread is about right). Between us (over two visits) we’ve had small plates of; parsnip bahjis in spicy tahini, gurnard in a spiced almond sauce, mushrooms in sunflower seed pesto with hazelnuts and sesame, calamari in spicy chicken broth, venison and oggleshield tatin, crispy beef in tahini with sumac pickled onions, and a rich crab bisque. There was a dish we didn’t get on with, but this was taken off the bill without question. Some of the small plates are more sizeable and filling than others, you can always ask which are more dainty. We’ve also all tried a mains dish of curried monkfish with almonds, new potatoes and roasted onions. The mains were delicious and definitely sizeable. The dining here isn’t cheap. But you’re not only paying for the inventive recipes and a chef who knows what he or she is doing, you’re paying to support a whole ethos around organic, free range, low air miles produce that is definitely not only for show. Would not hesitate to recommend.

Found this gem of a pub online a few years ago while searching for places to go not far from Somerset. I knew it would be a good place to go because their food looked and sounded yummy, but I knew I had to go after following them on Instagram and seeing their forward thinking and actions regarding global issues. It was a no-brainer that a place with good food and even better morals would be great to support. The front of house staff were lovely and helpful to everyone that walked through the door , thank you! It was great to see them support each other and have general chatter too. I overheard the kitchen staff and serving staff getting briefed about allergies/food requirements and what alternatives they can provide. Often, I go to restaurants whose menu is drastically limited for people with food requirements, and I'm usually left disappointed and sad when there's only one or two things I can eat because of hidden (not obvious on the menu) ingredients. So, it was so warming that The Bull Inn staff are so on it with recipes and dishes that things can easily get substituted. The drinks selection was good! The food was yummy! The only thing that could have made it better - a little music. (and more annual leave so we could stay a night!)

We had dinner on a busy Friday night and the restaurant was packed, which was nice to see. But the service didn't suffer throughout the evening and our servers were pleasant and efficient. The menu had some really interesting flavour combinations, it was great to see vegetables featuring so prominently and all of the ingredients are of high quality - we ended up choosing the cod (which was excellent and perfectly cooked) and the venison (slightly overdone and underhung!) The flavours across the board tended to be well matched but subtle rather than big and bold, and we felt that it wouldn't take much to elevate each dish to another level (for example the walnuts on the roasted artichoke starter seemed to be bare out of the packet - if they had been pan roasted with eg. some salt and mace the dish would have been less flat in flavour). The cheese was overdressed with completely superfluous items. But having said all that, we really enjoyed our meal at the Bull. It is a bit unusual and we really appreciated the local ethos and different approach, and we would definitely go back for more seasonal treats!

We’d had a big lunch so their choice of “small plates” was perfect. So much choice. We went with: - Mussels, paprika, garlic, focaccia - Parsnip bhaji, whipped tahini, chilli jam - Stuffed lamb’s belly, celeriac remoulade, green sauce - Crispy cauliflower, hummus, green sauce, pumpkin seed picada This made an excellent dinner.

Great, friendly service that was so fast it was almost as hot as the beautiful dishes me & my partner enjoyed! Would highly recommend to anyone visiting the local area who enjoy fresh, seasonal produce.

Never been here before but we wanted somewhere nice to celebrate our wedding anniversary. It was quite busy for a midweek lunchtime on a cold winter’s day so a good sign. We didn’t have to wait to be seated, we were quickly shown to a table. It’s a very rustic feel, all plain wood & stone floors but doesn’t feel echoey or bare. We chose one small plate, bread & olive oil to share to begin and a large plate each as a main course. It isn’t cheap & portions aren’t huge however we both felt it was totally worth it. The chefs’ attention to detail particularly with vegetables is second to none. Who knew roasted butternut squash with honey & walnuts could taste SO good? I could have licked the dish, the seasoning was impeccable. I had a wedge of cabbage with dukkah as a main, my husband had a breast of chicken. Again both excellent with such a variety of flavours. My only complaint about the cabbage was I should have asked for a steak knife so I could have eaten the entire core, the old-fashioned Sheffield steel cutlery was no match for it, beautiful though it was. We probably could have eaten a pud & the selection was delicious but it would have been a little too much for lunchtime. Next time I think I just need to work my way through a few plates of pudding & cheese 😃 If you like wines there is a massive list, I’m sure you’d find something for every taste. Treat yourself & enjoy some very good food, beautifully presented.

Very reasonable over night stay at £100 B&B for such a nice Inn. Dinner was quite expensive and whilst it is a veggie promoting Inn, the menu could have done with a few more meat choices.

The best meal I've had for a very long time. Every dish beautifully crafted with ingredients that are all locally sourced and "organic". Every mouthful was a taste and texture sensation. Special mention to the blood orange and cardamom chantilly dessert which was next-level sensational. Thank you to the Bull and staff for a memorable meal. *Six* stars!

Disappointed & hungry. The most disappointing meal I have had anywhere for a long time. Overpriced & underwhelming. Even the beer a disappointment.

We love The Bull and save it for special occasions. It is quite notably different from any other Inn. Apart from its ethos it would probably be possible to put on a blindfold and stick a pin in the menu and be assured that you...

Great ethos as the title says and lovely food too but the studied 'laid back' style comes across as amateurish - there were errors made on both our room booking and our table booking and the latter error was dealt with with bad grace. There...

We shared four small dishes - mussels, crab bisque, sunchokes, braised lamb - and all were tremendous. Truly, these were the best mussels I've ever eaten, prepared with white whine, herbs, and garlic and served with fries. Perfection! The sunchokes were served over a bed...

We had booked a room tonight at this pub as we were travelling down for Polar express, unfortunately because of the storm as we live in the south west we are in a red zone and unable to travel as it is unsafe. I emailed the watermans arms last night no reply….i then rang to chase this up at 630 tonight due to no response and found the young girl I spoke to totally unhelpful and frankly rude! They said because we hadn’t given more than 24 hours notice they would charge us ,even though I had emailed the night before so I asked if they could move the booking to jan or feb so we wouldn’t lose the money she said no as it’s policy and wouldn’t even check. Then questioned why I was calling at 630pm when I should have checked in at 3pm….i said because I had emailed you last night and was waiting for a response again frankly a rude response which only added to my frustration! The lady then said I am looking at the inbox I have no email from you when I explained which email address I had sent it too as per the website her response was “oh I haven’t checked that one yet?!” Maybe check your email inboxes before accusing your customers of lying and not sending an email, where is your compassion and customer service?! I explained on the polar express thread on Facebook there were plenty of people who had booked hotels in the local area for tonight and couldn’t travel and the hotels had moved their bookings. Where is the watermans arms goodwill and kindness it is Christmas after all?! I explained I had been made redundant and we really couldn’t afford to lose this money and with it being Christmas could they check if we could move it as to not lose the money, she was totally inflexible wouldn’t even look at other dates in the next month or two for us. I understand the storm is not their fault but it is not our fault either, it’s not enough that our 5 year old daughter and ourselves are absolutely devastated we couldn’t travel and she missed the polar express and seeing Santa which we were all so looking forward to , but the fact they wouldn’t even look at moving the booking is just mean and nasty. Instead I was greeted with comment from the receptionist such as we have couples who have travelled from London why can’t you, first of all rude…..secondly check your geography London is in the south east we live in the south west with severe weather warnings in place. So thank you for ruining our weekend further and our Christmas you could have easily offered more empathy and looked to help your customers instead hide behind your “policy” and instead of trying trying to help your customers and make an awful situation better like many other hotels in the area have done. My advice avoid avoid avoid! If you want help or empathy from them in an unexpected situation forget it! You have made an awful weekend even worse your lack of empathy, flexibility and total lack of customer service is astounding and especially for a family who have already had an awful weekend, you could and should have done so much more to handle this situation better if other hotels and B&Bs can move bookings and be helpful why can’t you? Because you choose not too which is very disappointing and sad, Christmas should be the season of goodwill clearly this doesn’t apply to the watermans arms!

Service was fantastic, staff were lovely, however the food was mediocre and in some cases not as described. Wouldn't have been too bad if it was reasonably priced but it wasn't. No veggie option in main meals either so our veggie had a choice of a veggie breakfast or a jacket potato. He opted for the breakfast which was very cheap frozen stuff coming in at a whopping £12:50 plus extra for extra hash browns as it only comes with one. The rest of the food was ok but obviously bought in cheap frozen (my pie was obviously frozen and not home made fresh as advertised - that being said it tasted nice just £15:00 fit a frozen our is excessive). Overall, at £63 for 3 lunches of cheap frozen food left us feeling ripped off.
