Stopped here for supper after a walk on the beach. It was a super friendly, warm welcome from the start and it was very dog friendly! The food was absolutely beautiful! Even the side salads were really vibrant and had a wonderful, light, really tasty dressing, so good I ate it all! I had garlic crevettes to start and mussels to follow. Both were amazingly good but the mussels were probably THE best I've ever had, served with chunky slices of really fresh, good brown bread. My friend had squid to start and good old fish and chips. I had to try some of course and the batter on both starter and main was so light, very crisp and hugely tasty! I wish I could have had a pudding too but I was just too full! The bar snacks look fab too if you just want a quick drink and a bite to go with it...wish I lived locally! Even my little border terrier, Holly was impressed by this beautiful, friendly place as she was given little bits of sausage in a dish! All in all a fabulous place to visit and already planning to visit again some time. My only complaint is that I don't live closer! Thank you so much to Jamie, Andy and the fabulous chef! Will be back X

This is the second time staying at Sloop, unfortunately we were disappointed staying this time. Last summer Aug 23 we really enjoyed our stay. This time we found the general cleanliness of the room to be quote appalling. The carpets were dirty, inside the draws were dusty and dirty so I needed to clean these. The shower kept loosing pressure. The towels were discoloured and frayed - in need of replacement. The location is outstanding and the food in the pub was good but such a shame on the rooms. I do feel that management needs to do something to improve the overall maintenance of the rooms. The staff were lovely and did make our stay enjoyable.

Bantham is a beautiful quaint village and the beach is lovely. We have visited the area many times and have always enjoyed our stays. Our usual accommodation was taken so we booked The Sloop Inn. Unfortunately we were really disappointed by the accommodation at The Sloop. Our room had a musty smell and there was mould all around the shower enclosure. Throughout our stay we found about 5 bugs (we are thinking they are cockroaches) crawling on the carpet and in the bathroom. The window frame in the bedroom had mould on it and was very dirty. Some of the staff were very nice and friendly. We noticed in the pub downstairs there also looked like there was mould on the wall behind one of the curtains. It seems like the whole building needs a proper renovation by the owners to get it back to its former glory. The food in the pub was nice as always. Sad to say we won’t be staying at The Sloop again.

Great pub - where the village meets the beach. Very friendly staff, varied menu (Starters, Mains and Lite Bites). We had the Fish Pie and Ham, Eggs and chips. Very tasty. Sticky toffee pudding + rasberry n white chocolate cheesecake (in a glass jar) for dessert. With garlic bread, Pimms and a pint of best, it came to £64. Would highly recommend!

A very disappointing meal. They had sold out of scallops and mussels from the menu and took 25 minutes from our order to tell us. It took 45 minutes to receive a derisory amount of squid and 1 hour 20 minutes from order to get our main courses; overdone pork and an ordinary fish and chips. There's no fish on the menu or any fish specials apart from fish and chips. Not recommended 😕

Never usually leave reviews but had an absolutely awful experience here. Half of the menu items missing. Then continued to wait for an hour for our food. The food arrived and the display was disgusting- the curry came with half the things missing and was cold. We had no help with this and the waiter was rude. Blonde waitress was then walking around our table eating food and chewing next to us. We then later got home and one of us is vomiting from food poisoning. Holiday ruined.

A cozy pub with a fireplace and dining area. Orders must be placed at the bar but they are happy to open a tab for the table. The fish pie and mussels were really nice with generous portions. It’s been 15 years since I last visited The Sloop and it was so good to go back! We took an easy stroll along the coastal path from Thurlestone and we’re made to feel very welcome. We ordered sandwiches and chips and a couple of pints of beer, everything was freshly prepared and delicious and we returned for a second visit and had Crevettes which were again very good. Everyone was super friendly and we can’t wait to visit again.

After a day on the beach, it was a welcoming place to relax. Good beer and food, my wife said the fish and chips were excellent and my fish pie was the best I've had. Highly recommended, but a captive audience means it's not the cheapest. Ignore reviews saying there's no outdoor space, it's past the toilets.

Lovely little bed and breakfast. Bed was comfy, few car parking spaces round the back and a 5 minute walk from the beach. We had a top floor room with a sea view, which was nice to open the curtains and see in the mornings. Basic tea and coffee facilities in the room, and such much welcomed free biscuits on the tray too. Breakfast was good, however only served 9-930 so worth building than into your plans. Pub downstairs was nice for a couple of drinks, small beer garden patio out the back too. Worth nothing the stairs are quite tight so bear in mind for anyone who may struggle climbing them.

We arrived to no welcome, just a key in door of room, let our selves in, clean basic room. I upgraded to a room with a sea view, well photos speak for themselves! Room on a busy road with single glazing! One towel each given. Evening meal, tasteless frozen scampi with tasteless mushy peas, nice chips! Husbands fish pie was over heated, dry! Back door banged every time someone went through, which was a lot as busy. Only one slot for breakfast, from 9am until 9.30am. We had to wait for pub door to be opened, 2 minutes to 9 it opened, lady told us we were early!! Lovely breakfast, lovely ingredients used! No fruit, just cereals and juices! Coffee was excellent. Would we return, no! Too noisy, to be expected if staying in a pub! You stay here for the location, just few metres away beach, walks, views to Burgh island beautiful, idyllic.

We came here for my husband's birthday. We had two good meals. It was quite busy even out of school holidays so it's really important to book in advance. Live locally and have been going to the Sloop for almost 3 decades... my latest, and last visit was shocking given the aggressive rudeness of the barman As other reviewers point out, some of the current staff at The Sloop need serious training in customer service Possibly one of the worst experiences I have with a service sector employee in my life. We regularly go to restaurants throughout the SW from Gidley Park to the Glazebrook to 27. With many friends and family members visiting us in this beautiful part of the world we have the pleasure to call home, having places to entertain them is key. I will never visit the Sloop again while the current barman is retained , his appalling behaviour and rudeness would better be employed as a doorman on Union Steet of a Saturday night: he has no place in a front of house role. The service staff did a fine job though the food took almost an hour to arrive but was of reasonable quality In this business you are only as good as your weakest team member... training and supervision is definitely needed here

Quaint old inn at the bottom of a very steep hill road. The road is single track and the only way to reach the inn and the only way out. We had the Fish Pie which was overpriced for what you receive. A pre-prepared dish of food which appeared to be reheated. Not great. My husbands plate was cleared while I was still eating. Worse thing though was watching a male member of staff tip some left over food from the table opposite down his throat before clearing the plates and another member of staff saying 'hungry are you'. Probably a great place for the locals but visitors don't seem to be engaged with.

When I enquired - what about the customer? She said the boss doesn't allow it, following which the barman stated "Screw football!" He redeemed himself slightly by saying "unless it's Liverpool." I dont like to write negative comments but i feel i must because pubs like this that are institutions must know where improvement’s are required. The food was awful. Such a lovely pub, great beer and overall atmosphere is brilliant. But the food was really bad. We often go the beach at Bantham so are regulars to the village. Due to the popularity of the micro location, and the amount of tourism in the area this should be a 5 star venue that is focused on reputation and repeat business, but standards unfortunately do not match up to the expectations. Finally someone said we can't get enough staff there are only 2 chefs in the kitchen as if that was our problem. As we were one of the fist tables to order food it does make you wonder who was being served. At no point were we offered an apology or round of free drinks. Nothing. We should have got the message as soon as we sat down at the sticky table. We order 2 fish dishes off the specials menu. The salmon was good but the hake was poor. Its definitely a 5 star location! You have to pass it to go to/from the beach. Top marks! So why the 1 star review? Well buckle up and let me tell a story about you about a balmy Bantham night in early September. The Rishi “Eat Out to Help Out” incentive ended a couple of days earlier and the family frenzy that is the Summer holiday was a thing of the past.We expected that the relative calm of September would provide our party of 6 with a relaxing and enjoyable dining experience. After all, it’s a 4.5 star on Google (currently) and it’s in a great location! That’s the end of the prologue... let’s get to chapter one...> Chapter One - The Mysterious Reservation <We walk in the door... and wait to be seated. A waitress arrives to take our reservation. We give our name... a look of puzzlement washes over the waitresses face. She can’t find our reservation, but she’s found us a table nevertheless. No problems! These things happen and it was dealt with as you’d expect. In retrospect, this was a classic example of no smoke without fire... and we were about to enter an inferno of hospitality blunders.> Chapter One - The Mystifying Menu <We took our seats towards the back of the pub and picked up our paper menus. We ordered drinks including a few beers and a bottle of fizzy white wine. What type of fizzy wine, you ask? Prosecco perhaps? Cava?Sadly not... in fact it was regular white wine that has an effervescent characteristic rarely found in your typical bottle of Pinot. Not to bother! We don’t mind funky wine... we are here for the food anyway!Talking of food... where was our order? We’d ordered at 8pm and it was currently 9.10pm. For the mathematicians amongst you, you’ll have calculated that this amounts to 70 minutes. We were starting to get a little concerned about the level of service at The Sloop, but fortunately the bubbly Pinot had been thoroughly digested and it had taken the edge off our appetite.Plus, the menu looked genuinely impressive! There were some bold food combinations, that threw together multiple cuisines from all corners of the globe. There must be a Michelin level cook in the kitchen to pull off these combos! Our 5 dishes arrived and sadly our confidence, much like our reservation, was misplaced. The food was frankly dreadful, with the exception of the mussels, which elevated the overall standard from terrible to woeful. That said the mussels did not escape the experience unscathed. More on that later...By now, the more astute individuals in the audience will have a burning question. WHY ARE THERE ONLY FIVE DISHES FOR A TABLE OF 6?Enter yours truly.Earlier in the evening when looking at the menu, I couldn’t help but be enticed by this gem of a description “The Famous Sloop Inn Fish Pie”. That sounds like a delicious option! Plus the waiting staff didn’t know what 2 of the 3 rather interesting sounding specials were, so I thought this would be fool-proof. Sadly we would soon learn that the chefs vocabulary was considerably more impressive that there cooking.Back to the question... why are there only 5 dishes?Well the “famous” fish pie had clearly let stardom get to his head. Like a true pop diva it felt that it’s reputation gave it the right to keep its fans (aka me) waiting. In fact it had the gig altogether. The waiting staff, oblivious to the blunder asked chirpily “is that everything”. The chefs vocabulary was akin Susie Dent, but sadly the staff didn’t possess Rachel Riley’s equivalent talent for maths.I’ll give you all 30 seconds to work out this tough equations... 6 - 5 = ?Didn’t get it in time? Don’t worry, you’re not alone! We informed the staff of the missing dish and without a word of apology, the panicked waitress did an about turn and rushed into the kitchen. She was muttering something about sorting out, but she never returned. The time is currently 9.25pm and we had to intercept another waiting staff to ask if the famous fish pie was going to make an appearance. He also said he would check. It finally arrived and GOOD GRACIOUS what a sight! Chef Mike has clearly nuked this dish into high hell*. It was a hot mess that has little to no fish in it. At this point the penny dropped. They had added an “o” to the description of the pie to arrive at the name of the pub!*fun fact - in the restaurant industry Chef Mike refers to putting something into the microwaveI’m no Christopher Nolan, but at this point I feel compelled to hit you with a flashback.***Flash back to ordering the mussels***My friend asked the waitress if the chef could swap the bread that accompanied the mussels for chips. The waitress said she would ask the chef. My friend thanks her, and explained that if it wasn’t possible then he’d pay for a side of chips.***Back to delivery of the mussels***The mussels arrived with chips and no bread, so they had successfully swapped the bread for chips. Perhaps this should be a 2 star review after all!***Flash Forward to receiving the bill***My friend was billed for mussels AND a side of chips. So basically they removed the bread he was paid for, then charged him for the chips. We didn’t actually realise this mistake until we’d already paid, but we were so exhausted by the time we realised that we let it slide. A classic example of Bait and Switch.> Chapter 3 - The Complaint <As a group of friendly individuals with extensive experience in hospitality, we really didn’t want to be the nitpicking customers. However, we felt that something had to be said and they did refund the sloppy fish pie.We did think that was the least they could offer, but it was certainly something. Maybe this could be a happy ending after all? Spoiler - it’s not.Enter an incredibly chirpy supervisor ever. The young lady has clearly been sent to diffuse the situation. Let’s see what she has to offer...She said “I’m extremely sorry for the service you’ve had tonight. I understand there were a number of problems with the food and the time it took to receive the food. We normally pride ourselves on offering delicious meals, but it was a particularly busy evening. I apologise profusely”....is what she said in a parallel universe where customer service existed in The Sloop. What she actually did was navigate awkwardly through small talk without acknowledging any of the issues that we’d experienced. And if you thought the night couldn’t get any worse... they didn’t even give us free chocolate mints. Obviously it wouldn’t have made up for the terrible experience, but it might have left us with a sweet taste in the mouth (not metaphorically of course).I really hope you’ve enjoyed this little saga. If you’re looking for a sequel then I’d recommend you go to Bantham and experience the live 3D version. Perhaps it’ll be the ultimate plot twist and you’ll have an incredible time! However, I’d suggest skipping the theatre and letting it go straight to DVD.Oh and a word of advice to Sloop Inn. Change the description of your fish pie in the menu before trading standards prosecutes you for false advertising. Specifically, I’m referring to the words “fish” and “pie”. It contained no fish and did not resemble a pie. You can keep the word famous. It might be if this review goes viral!

Having called in earlier in the week to make a reservation (you can choose 6:30pm or 8:30pm), we were given the table we had asked for when booking and received excellent friendly service when selecting wine and beer to start the evening. All 4 of us went for the crab salad starter, which we all felt was unique and turned out to be excellent.Fish and Chips (which are huge), a Sea Bream dish plus Duck Confit with bubble and squeak from the specials list were all very satisfying and very tasty. Covid secure walkways clearly marked and a friendly service throughout made for a very pleasant evening with friends at The Sloop.Recommended.

We booked our table for 8.30pm, when we arrived we were told that the people at our table were just finishing up and could we wait outside in the courtyard for 10 minutes or so, we were happy to do so. After 40 minutes we were still waiting, it was cold and we were hungry so we went in and again were told it would be just a few minutes and that there had been a lot of traffic on the beach road meaning everyone had arrived late. We waited again, 2 groups who had arrived long after us were seated, they were groups of 4, we were 5 but I’m sure we could have fitted around a table for 4. We continued to wait. We went back in again at 9.25, it was all a bit disorganised, the guy behind the bar was nice enough but no help at all, the same with the waitress, the manager kept his head down at the till and pretended I wasn’t there. We continued to wait. At around 9.40 the manager came out and expressed surprise that we were still waiting. We were seated and immediately informed of a whole list of dishes that were unavailable which turned out to be all of the specials. We were also asked to order quickly before ordering drinks as the kitchen wanted to close! We were given free drinks by way of apology, which was something at least. The food was served quickly and was ok, that’s about all I can say about it. We ordered desserts and after about a 29 minute wait for 4 créeme brûlée’s were asked if we would eat them at another table as staff wanted to set up for breakfast. All in all a bit of a fiasco and badly organised. I would have thought, given that the road to Bantham beach is always busy and particularly more so currently, that on booking, customers are informed of the traffic problem and asked to factor this into their journey and also be told that if they arrive more than 15 minutes late, their table will not be saved. I will not be returning here, even though I’m local and will not recommend it to others. This was our first meal out since January and it was not enjoyable.

Spent the day at Bentham beach. The single track road out was blocked so decided to walk up to the place for a drink. Found a table in the beer garden. Ordered food. Despite covid restrictions the staff were excellent and the measures set up were smooth and well managed, one way in and out, table service and an attention to cleanliness. On top of that the drinks flowed and the food was gorgeous. Sat out and watched the sun go down. Not a bad place to get stuck for a few hours at all. Thank you

Walked to the Sloop from the Thurlestone Hotel along the coastal path. Amazing views on a stunning sunny day in August. Storm Ellen on her way so bit breezy, but wonderfully warm. Had a drink in the garden or paddock of the Sloop, in the sunshine, then went inside for a couple more. Mark the manager was great and we chatted to him for ages. Really nice chap, so nice in fact he gave us a lift back to the hotel! Apart from that, a very busy convivial pub with good St Austell ales. Highly recommended.

My wife and I went for a birthday dinner. We both really enjoyed our food- Plaice and a vegetarian dish of roast squash. We really appreciated the massive efforts the team made to implement and (politely) enforce certain restrictions to minimise the Covid risk to their customers and the wider community. It’s obviously been a very challenging period for pubs, and they certainly haven’t taken any short cuts in reopening. We’ll be back again.

We were a group of eight with an 83 year old mother-in-law. It started well with a round table in an alcove with the window open. The staff however did not wear masks and made no attempt to distance themselves from us. Several things that we ordered were not available and the food took a long time to come. The smoked prawns were more like smoked shrimps and a lot of them still had the roe on them which was not pleasant. Apart from that the seafood was good with large portions. I won't be returning wholes COVID 19 restrictions are still in place unless they sort their staff out.

We booked The Sloop for our first night on holiday and are glad we did. We walked from Thurlestone through the fields we gave us stunning views of Burgh Island. We were seated in “The Paddock” which had a great buzz and was busy. Nothing was too much trouble for our waitress and we had a great time. Well worth a visit!

We booked the Sloop on a recommendation. It is right on the coast in a small village with very narrow road access but worth the trip. About 15 mins from Salcombe. There is a restaurant inside and the owners have rented land and made outdoor eating area and drinks bar outside too. We booked for inside at 6 30pm. When we arrived it was quiet and the guy who was friendly that seated us, said it would get busy very quickly. Very easy to order, and drinks came straight away. Went for the crab starter, amazing. Large portion but lovely food and well done. Then we had mussels, huge, and two specials, local plaice and sole. Both lovely and fresh and local. The mains started to arrive as I finushed my starter before the plate was cleared, and came a bit sporadic. I guess shortage of staff in the kitchen. Our waitress then gave us tomato sauce instead of tartar and forgot the salt. It was also a while before getting our bill. The food was brilliant though and all covid rules were followed. I have marked this as a 5 star even with the small problems, because they are trying and I want to promote it. I see someone on another recent review waited over an hour, and I could see this happening during busy times. I suggest thus us due to getting the balance of staff and business right. And maybe staff training. Nevertheless, please try this, maybe go early at present times. Enjoy

Waited 1hr 20mins for our main course plates to be removed. Gave-up on desert. Busy evening for the waitresses - they need more staff with more experience.

This is a really cosy village pub and they have worked hard to set up a functioning beer garden. The Sloop Best bitter is a good pint. We ordered take out fish and chips but unfortunately the fish was a bit dry and over-battered.

Service was fantastic, staff were lovely, however the food was mediocre and in some cases not as described. Wouldn't have been too bad if it was reasonably priced but it wasn't. No veggie option in main meals either so our veggie had a choice of a veggie breakfast or a jacket potato. He opted for the breakfast which was very cheap frozen stuff coming in at a whopping £12:50 plus extra for extra hash browns as it only comes with one. The rest of the food was ok but obviously bought in cheap frozen (my pie was obviously frozen and not home made fresh as advertised - that being said it tasted nice just £15:00 fit a frozen our is excessive). Overall, at £63 for 3 lunches of cheap frozen food left us feeling ripped off.

Had Sunday lunch which was nice but definitely not the best I’ve had. Beef was tender and potatoes nice and crispy but the meal wasn't hot just warm. Staff were friendly but didn’t like having to leave my bank card behind the bar unfortunately people do at times try and leave without paying but cards can also be misused and cloned. Would not go again.
