Went for lunch as we do on a regular basis food is always good as are the staff however sat outside which is something we dont normally do It was absolutely appalling we sat looking at the Trent the Glass fencing was filthy and never been cleaned the bridge Piers were rotting and needed repair the whole outside area was dreadful

The food is really good, and it has a great atmosphere. The staff are all friendly and provide a really good service, friendly service!!

Excellent location but sorry that's all went yesterday for dinner but couldn't get what we wanted we went at 12.30 so early for food very few people inside we wanted a mixed grill to be told they was sold out of mixed grill stuff. sorry the lady was extremely rude so had to make do with fish & chips to our annoyance if we wanted fish & chips we would of gone somewhere else not here. however food came and it wasn't bad. My advice is brilliant location but pot luck with the menu and unfortunately the women that runs it is very rude & arrogant which is such a shame as it used to be a fab pub. Sadly we won't return .

We visited as a group of 5, adults and children. Disappointment Overall with the food and the service. We ordered 4 meals and a kids meal but apparently the 30% off was only valid on one of the meals! Such a con, as was not described in any small print. We waited quite a long time for all the meals then received burnt lasagna with brown and limp salad, aswell as overdone scampi nuggets and chips. when we were asked how was the food I said the lasagna was burnt. The girl did offer to take it away but we didn't want to wait another 30+ minutes for another meal, no offer of a partial refund was offered. I also ordered 2 children's deserts, after 10 minutes waiting we were told only 1 was available, at this point I just asked for a refund as a quick lunch had taken far too long. We won't be returning or recommending.

New menu and very pleased. Steak was perfect and the wife enjoyed her curry. Good friendly service and decent prices for a local pub. Nice atmosphere, low background music means you can hear the conversation.

The car park is great as we have to used the disabled space and the walk is not far to the door so we don't have to use our walking aids. Always love sitting at the window tables as it is nice and light, and the couple of steps are ok to the table, and who ever serves us at the bar carries our drinks to the table. The young girl who served us was lovely and very polite. Not being called dear or love is how we like it, and a smile brightens our day. The food is great and being able to have a light lunch is an attraction as it is just enough for us...... and sometimes we can manage a sponge pudding and custard as well. It means a lot to me not to have on my plate more than I can eat, as food waste makes me very concerned and makes me feel quilty. Cost also comes into the equation of course. There were 4 of us and all over 65. It is important to my friend that her cup of tea comes in a pot, as that is her drink of choice and does not like a tea bag and mug given to her. My drink is Ginger beer which you do not sell (i'm the driver) which isn't an issue as there are so many soft drinks and I understand you cannot stock them all. I drink Apple 55 at the Sump. Our other two friends had Carling and wine.....no issues at all and the glasses look like they are renivated regularly, so nice and clean and shiney....just how you like it......always tastes better. I don't normally fill these in as I am very picky due to the nature of my job before I retired, but I hope this helps so you can see how much you are doing correctly..... which is everything in my opinion. My friends are looking forward to another visit soon.....thank you.....compliments to your staff and chef.....a lovely afternoon.

We had a festive meal the presentation was top notch the food was delivered hot and very tasty. Great atmosphere was extremely busy. Brilliant job 👏

We didn't book our lunchtime visit to The Sump, but were welcomed by friendly staff. Very tasty and well presented meals. I can recommend the steak, it was cooked perfectly as requested, medium rare.

So The Sump, Burton. Very disappointed with our visit today. Standard of food was very under par. We had two sharing plates between us, Nachos and Chicken and Ribs. The Mexican Style Nachos were bland, not as described in menu (loaded with cheese sauce etc) the toppings were very sparse and cheese sauce hard to find. Not a sign of the chopped chives on the top. The chicken and ribs were very pale in colour, looked like they were steamed. We had 4 mini riblets and 4 very small chicken wings. Menu described them as being a double portion. They were supposed to be tossed in our choice of sauce but were in fact just lightly drizzled in bbq sauce, obviously squirted from a bottle. Again, no chopped chives on the top. When we mentioned these points to a member of staff she went to fetch ‘someone else’. We felt that our issues were not taken seriously and were told that they were prepared to spec by the kitchen who have to deliver food to spec and even weigh portions. She was quite rude, she did offer a free pudding but all we wanted was for her to pass on our thoughts to the kitchen. If they were to spec, they should be delivered to table as described in the menu, and look a little like the pictures used. We have been in the hospitality industry for 40 years and understand the spec sheets and how to follow that through to table. We also understand how to speak to customers that have a minor complaint, not the way we were spoken to. We have used the Sump many times in the last 18 years but will not be returning any time in the near future.

Spot on waiter they need a raise ( I asked for his name and I think his name is Morgan ).Food is good pricing and fantastic it makes my tastebuds tingle. I would come again great hospitality, WHAT DOES BLOOD WANT

Like Thursdays at the Sump because it's Steak and Drink night. Three of us ate/drank for less than £36, great value. I would have preferred my Sirloin (£1-00 extra) to be rare as requested not medium +, however great value and reservation on line gets you to sit where you want

Food always good however pub felt dirty urgently needs a refurbishment Tables need replacing or re varnashing outside space unkept

The Sump is usually OK for a chain pub and the riverside view makes it lovely, but yesterday's visit (Sunday 6.30) was poor. Several items were missing from the food & drink menu - nothing advised ahead but just discovered as you try to order. The service was slow, the waitress uncertain and meals came with only half a dozen chips when there's usually more. Gin was served in a what looked like a school's water glass as they had no clean gin glasses. Chocolate fudge cake came with ice cream when it was ordered plain, returned and when it came back the ice cream had been wiped off along with some of the fudge cake, leaving a big chocolatey smear across the plate which they hadn't bothered to clean up. I'd asked them to acknowledge my son's birthday hoping for a candle in the dessert or something as most places do. The lady in charge just said Happy Birthday as we walked in, though good that she had read the booking and greeted us cheerfully. On the plus side the young man behind the bar seemed new and unconfident but was very pleasant, the view was lovely as usual and the lady in charge shouted a cheery thank you and goodbye as we left. Shame not to do better when they have so many location advantages. We'll try to stick to just lunchtimes in future for the lovely outside view.

Food was terrible, best to avoid and just go for a drink. The selection of beer was pretty lousy too though so probably just don’t bother at all - however the view was nice

We used to eat at the Sump on a regular basis but hadn’t been for a while. Todays visit was for lunch on the 22nd May 2023 at midday. Menu is good, reasonably priced however the place is now looking very rough and in need of some TLC. But that’s not the end of the world if the service is good and the food is good. However the food and service are representative of the state of the building. The lady who served us was short and abrubt and when I questioned the lemonade being lacking in syrup she was quite rude and said ‘that’s how it is’. We’ve all been places where the soft drinks have gone a little flat or tasteless and the bar staff are always happy to sort for you but not here. Then there was the food. My chicken burger came with dipping gravy….. cold . My partners chicken burger which we asked for no salad had what looked like ‘old shredded lettuce’ pieces stuck to the bun and her fries were cold. We can understand now why the place was not as busy as it used to be. Such a shame.

Lovely owner, fun pub quiz, nice reasonable food, decent portions- always liked the curries, good for pub curries, hunters chicken, spicier options. Lovely sun spot when the weather warms up.

Like the rest of the reviews since businesses were allowed to open I can’t fault the Sump on what they have done to keep customers safe while maintaining excellent customer service. I hadn’t seen my friend for ages and we agreed to meet up here. I booked but I didn’t have to. Warm welcome on entering and although a limited menu still a good choice. We both had the scampi. It soon arrived and it was lovely. Well cooked and good portion size. We sat and chatted over a great cup of coffee and there was hurry for us to leave. Highly recommend and well done!

We can highly recommend The Sump. They have loads of seating even with their excellent COVID-19 response of cordoned off tables and one-way system. Their food is so fresh and well presented. Their staff are friendly and the waiting time for service and food are both low. It’s also a beautiful setting. You should definitely give it a try.

I take my hat off to the Landlady & her Team, it was great to be able to get back to the pub for a drink and see human faces after so long in lock down. This establishment has all the precautions in place. The staff were welcoming, friendly & helpful - Temperature check on entry- One way system in place- Social Distancing rules that are monitored- The Staff are fully equipped with face visors & gloves. - Plastic screens at the bar to protect the staff & customers - Tables & chairs thoroughly cleaned after each customer has vacated their table.My boyfriend and I had not intended on staying for dinner, but we were having such a lovely time we thought why not. It is a reduced menu currently, but there was plenty of choice. Food was well presented, hot and delicious. I can honestly say a little bit of normal (with all the precautions in place) makes you feel so much better. I would highly recommend this establishment to all. We will be visiting again.

Great service.Considering the circumstances, pub was open, extremely clean, I watched staff cleaning all high traffic areas at least twice while I sat and had my meal.It wasn't busy, but the atmosphere was great as music was softly playing in the back ground and staff were pretty jolly, which made whole experience even better as I was contemplating whether to come out or not, since can't really get any proper food in stores.Overall pretty impressed with service and the view is to due for.

Horrific service, hairy toasted sandwich, no idea how to run a restaurant. Waited nearly 30 mins between starter and main and 45 mins between finishing mains and getting pudding. Which were all pre ordered at the beginning of the meal. Someone had a toasted sandwich which came with hairs sticking out of it. Sent it back and didn’t get anything else, they didn’t send a replacement. We had to ask for a refund as everyone had finished eating. The sausage was burnt, mash lumpy and gravy like jelly. The hunters chicken was rock hard. Everything was awful. If I could give it no stars I would. Big family meal for parents ruby anniversary ruined due to awful quality food and lapse service. So disappointed! If they can’t handle big tables we should have been informed before they ruined such a special day that we will never get back!

Had a really positive experience. The staff were welcoming from the point of arrival and the interior was bright and comfortable. The meal arrived promptly and staff checked back just after being served. The variety and price of the menu was very good and the pudding was excellent. I would recommend the venue highly and would visit again. The only downside was that the mixer was broken.

Have always had good meals previously but extremely disappointed today when I found a long cooked hair in my meal.

It's worth the 5 stars considering the type of restaurant/food of which there is a very good selection. Drinks are not at inflated prices. I found the food quality excellent and reassured by my order taker that the rib steak was rubbish quality. Another supplier has learned a lesson I hope. Would have no hesitation in returning. Four meals including a mega stack, 2 sirloins, and a dirty chilli burger with monteray cheese. All included sides.

Didn’t book in and didn’t think we would get a table so popped in for a drink on the off chance.we mentioned we would like to eat so the staff suggested we have a drink and as soon as a table was free they would allocate us a table. The pub was very busy but we did get our table and the food was served within good time even though they were very busy.Food was great and the staff very friendly. Highly recommended x

After a 35 minute wait we finally got our roasts..The roasties were burnt and virtuallybabyfood inside, brocolli al dente and that is being kind. As someone else mentioned has deffo seen better days. Not a chance we woukd go back. The views are nice!

Taking advantage of a warm September evening I walked out to the sump. Enjoyed a Riverside pint as the sun went down then went in for food.If you're looking for "gastro pub" this is not the place, if you just want decent no frills pub favourites then this is the place. It's clean, well laid out with a decent, well priced menu. Despite other reviews on here I found all the staff friendly and effecient.I just had gammon and egg with chips, plus some sides. It was exactly as I'd want, tasty, nice portion with runny eggs!All in all good. Will come back.

Went for lunch have noticed pub looking very tired food ok but have had better there Wine still great value staff were under pressure no wine coolers was told only had two so wine bottle was put into a plastic jug with ice(not good)

What an awful experience. We went in to have an event and most of our meals were burnt. Lasagnes burnt underneath and the sides, chips that tasted they have been standing all day under a hot plate. Myself and others work in a pub/restaurant and know how places like this works. And only two staff on the bar.

Me and my friends are regulars to this pub. The food is exactly what you pay for and what you expect for a traditional pub grub place. If you’re going for a fancy meal and expect the full works go elsewhere. Food always taste good and does exactly what you want if you’re hungry and looking for a quick bite to eat. The view of the river outside is beautiful and in the summer months great to go for a few drinks. The staff are very helpful and always very friendly except for one girl who works behind the bar who always seems to have a sulk with customers for some reason. Overall if you fancy a pint with a good view or a quick bite to eat for a good price it’s does exactly that.

Had a beautiful Meal here for my friends Birthday,The table was reserved early on to allow me to put balloons up and banners. We pre ordered as there were a few of us going and the food came out on time and was beautiful. The waiters were polite and very helpful. The bar very well stocked especially with my tipple Gin. We visited around 5pm one teatime for an early drink and something to eat. This pub is local to us and is only a very short walk away. It’s great for sitting out by the river, watching the wildlife and the river flowing past. We don’t very often eat here as although there is a lot of choice on the menu, it is very simply presented and is just ‘pub grub’. There is not a big selection of real ales, with only one to pick from. Husband had steak and I chose lasagne. Both were okay but nothing special. The food prices are very cheap though, but you do get what you pay for. It’s okay for a quick tea out, but not for a special occasion.

I went in for a casual drink with my friends, we are all regulars. I had gone to the bar to order a drink and before the woman could serve me the land lords came running over stared at me up and down while i ordered all our drinks and then asked to see me ID, I told him I’d forgotten it and then was rudely asked to leave even though I am a regular. I am 20 years old and have been going there since I was 16. Also I know most of the bar staff there are underaged and them selves and should not be serving alcohol.

Visited today at lunchtime and had the special offer for 2 courses. The staff were pleasant and very efficient. The food was what you would expect for the price paid and was very enjoyable.

Came to Burton to view a car and this was recommended for pub food. Really nice all day breakfast for £4.25 and chicken and gammon pie for £7.20. Nice view over the river as a bonus.

Staff has gone down hill recently.

I found this by chance on the internet, while looking for a suitable place to eat after going to the cinema at Barton Marina. On arrival I was pleasantly surprised by the Sump. Great river views and the Pub itself is very tidy. The biggest surprise was the menu, especially the specials. We went for the Burger special (2 burgers and 2 drinks for £12.00) Both my cheese and bacon burger and my wife's chicken burger were very good with great chips. Judging by the quality of this special we will definitely be giving the Thursday "Steak special" a try soon. Well worth the trip from Derby.

Visited here for the first time and was massively impressed. Lovely views outside overlooking the river. Had drinks good value and then had a meal with my partner. Amazing food. 2 burgers and 2 drinks for £12 not only good value but brilliant quality oozy floozy burgers. And not only that very friendly staff and great service. Will defo be returning soon. Popped in at the weekend for a drink as the weather was so nice , it was quite busy which we expected on the only sunny bank holiday we are likely to have, the atmosphere was fabulous, we enjoyed it so much we stayed longer than expected and decided to eat has you do ! The setting of this pub is lovely as it overlooks the river. The food is OK, basic pub grub that is perfectly edible but nothing to get exited about. Staff seem very friendly with the locals but not so much with newcomers. Would go again though as lovely to sit outside in nice weather

A small group of us went to celebrate my mums 90th birthday and to be honest I wish we hadn’t bothered. We were there for three hours in total because the service was so slow and some of the food when it arrived was hardly edible. My chicken was so hard at the edges that I couldn’t cut it. It used to be a decent meal there but goodness knows what’s gone wrong. I felt sorry for the young waitress who was really sweet, but doing a difficult job. I hate leaving bad reviews but unfortunately it is often the only way to force improvements. Such a shame, but I definitely won’t be going back in a hurry.

I class my self as regular to this setting however after ever visit I leave more deverstated then before which I thought was impossible.

Went here for a nice birthday meal for my partner and two friends and we were so disappointed as we used to love this place.

Was meeting a friend tonight, arrived at @ about 7:45 got the menus out started to look. Then suddenly a waitress without introducing herself slammes her hands down on the table and tells us that food is back logged an hour and that there stopping serving food at 9....well it’s 7:50 so how does that make it we can’t order food. Stood there staring at us basically saying get out, you can’t order food, just went “sorry girls”, not even to our faces as she was walking away from the table. Wonderful customer service aye. Yet she said that they weren’t taking more food orders because of the back log on food, yet the table opposite us said “reserved”. So did that mean that the customers that were going to be sitting at that table weren’t going to be get served or, simply because me and friend haven’t booked on a Tuesday evening that we simply weren’t as important as the other tables. Wasn’t even particularly busy .Very disappointed as a regular customer here. But simply disgusted in the way this employee spoke to a member of the public and about to be a paying customer, we haven’t even had chance to go get any drinks. Disgusted!

Good atmosphere and polite staff. We were in a large group of friends (12 of us) and found some seating. Some of us had food and the meal was good value for money. Decent parking too. Just a good pub really, would come back

I have eaten here on many occasions, usually with a group of friends, and whilst I have no real complaints about the food or the service, I do have a huge niggle with the music. I have had to ask on almost every occasion if the music volume could be lowered as trying to have a conversation over loud, awful music is no fun. I don’t think the age of the customers can ever be taken into consideration, as the music being played is more suited to the younger generation rather than the more senior customer - who are usually the majority during the day - and would I’m sure appreciate more easy listening, background music.

If you are looking for a cheap tasteless canteen style Sunday lunch with watery gravy and tasteless veg then this is the place to go

Oh this romantic view is something so lovely especially in the afternoon when the sun goes down! Never had food here, but drinks are always served properly and fast!

We enjoyed a lovely meal here. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The prices are very reasonable and the quality of food was as expected for the cost paid. It was the Friday before Halloween and the pub was nicely decorated and the staff were in costume. There was also live music on which was a bonus.

Friends recommended this meal so we decided to try it out.We were not disappointed as we thought it was very good value at just under £6 for 3 courses, plus for £1.50 pint of draught bitter as part of the deal.The staff were friendly and the service first class.

What a lovely place to have a good meal out with my husband and our girls. Beautiful views outside beside the river. Great choice if meals on the menu - my Butter Chicken was delicious. The staff were so very friendly and checked on us a couple of times and the service was fast. We will definitely be visiting again.

Had a meal here with my 3 children last night very happy , the food was excellent ,the staff were very friendly,met the landlord and landlady who introduced themselves (lovely people)they produced some crayons & paper which the kids had fun with , will definitely be going in again very soon nice friendly atmosphere

Had really nice couple of pints of pedigree and succulent 10oz ribeye steak, would recommend this establishment as a must visit.

Recommended as a place to go because it's just that little bit different. If you can get a table outside overlooking the River Trent and the weir then you will have a lovely experience. Food is good and service is also good.
