We have stayed at The Star before, eaten in the restaurant a couple of times and enjoyed it, but tonight we had a disappointing experience. The food was okay (nothing special) but the service was all over the shop. I began to think we were invisible. We would have liked a cocktail and pudding, but despite trying to catch wait staff’s eyes and a couple of desperate waves, we were ignored. The table behind us, who finished their main course way after us, were brought dessert menus, but we were forgotten. In the end we just got the bill and left. No ‘how was your meal?’ Nothing. We went into the bar and had a cocktail there instead. I think someone needs to oversee the service. It was all very strange.

Our third visit for lunch at The Star. Having previously eaten in the cosy bar area, this time, we sat in the sunny courtyard. Once again the set lunch menu was excellent with something for everyone. The food was beautifully cooked and presented. Service was excellent. As an added bonus on our previous visit in June, I had the pleasure of encountering, the delightfully charming and friendly, Alex Polizzi in the corridor. Not surprisingly the hotel is very tastefully decorated with quirky touches throughout. We will certainly be back.

5-May The Star At Alfriston: Visited for Sunday lunch as a party of 3. The dining room is really beautiful: very calming, and a perfect mix of traditional and modern. The Sunday lunch was exceptional, with thinly sliced, perfectly medium rare roast beef. Generous portions and very tasty indeed. Service was absolutely charming: perfectly attentive, friendly, interesting (never starchy). Superbly well trained, obviously. We left very happy, full / satisfied, and feeling spoiled, exactly as it should be. Highly recommend and hope to return.

The Star is beautifully furnished and I expected its cuisine to glimmer in the same way. I booked us in for lunch! I was wrong. Firstly, a strange grim manager struts about, who wouldn’t go amiss at a dowager’s ball, but certainly goes amiss in Alfriston, where locals and tourists trek in from the chalky terrain of Cuckmere. As I stepped through the door, he ran his eyes despairingly down my gardening jeans, torn, grubby and from M&S. I dreaded him. The younger and presumably cheaper staff were lovely, joyous creatures, overseen by this vinegary character. We tucked into some pleasant grub but fell for a few tricks of the trade … I ordered Chicken Milanaise and it came, with tomato aioli (which I suspect was mayo mashed up with some purée). The promised fennel and endive salad was a tottery, unseasoned frizz. My aunt and husband ordered asparagus with poached eggs. This was a ‘main’ for £20 odd quid. “That might not fill you up,” the waitress observed brightly. “You could order some sides?” My husband’s wallet seemed to grow lighter … The ‘side’ was a bowl of pretend ‘real’ chips, you know the ones with a neat disc of potato skin at the end but which still lack any fibre. If you’re going to give us asparagus and boiled egg for a ‘main’, then charge us for a ‘side’ then at least please make the chips real ones … I could go on, but the grub was fine, the surroundings beautiful. I guess I get bored with smoke and mirrors when it comes to good food

So we were very excited to have lunch here. I think the hype was a bit too great though, as we expected excellence, and that was perhaps a mistake as we left underwhelmed. The restaurant is beautiful, staff are friendly, and the ambience was great. Unfortunately the service was very slow. We weren't offered a drink for 10 minutes. Then it was a while before we were able to order, and so we didn't get anything to eat except a little bread for an hour. When we did receive it, it was a bit forgettable. I had gravadlax which was small and dull, followed by hake which was tasty but a bit over salty. My wife had bean and kale soup, huge portion, oversalted, and burrata with tomatoes, under-flavoured. Kids had pasta and chicken milanese. Apparently the pasta was tasty, chicken wasn't. No alcohol, well over £100. So basically it seemed like the chef hadn't tasted to check flavours (sounds rude I know). Such a shame as the restaurant is beautiful. We wouldn't return.

A beautifully decorated pub/restaurant and hotel. Guest car park at the back is a great bonus- just buzz for entry. The lady who greeted us, showed us to the table and took our coats delightful. Restaurant wasn’t busy at all. We ordered drinks & main course - Sunday lunch- roast beef was perfect served with veg , a small Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes on the plate- gravy and horseradish on a separately. We finished main course and male waiter took the empty plates away. We probably waited 20 mins and then asked for dessert menus. We ordered desserts and coffee/ again lovely but once again we had to ask for the bill and there was only one waiter who was setting up tables. Bill came, reasonably priced for great food. We asked how we could get out coats and was directed down the hallway where they were hanging up to choose from. The bar areas in the front cosy and tastefully decorated with interesting art. My only criticism is waiting service slow and not really attentive in the restaurant- took over 3 1/2 hrs for 2 courses and had to ask twice.

Disappointing lunch after looking foreword to this as we enjoyed our visit here same time last year. The staff were ‘frosty’ and unattentive like we shouldn’t have been there ( they couldn’t find our booking but at the time we arrived no other customers were there). Asked for a pot of tea with extra milk, tea & pot of hot water arrived but by the time I realised that they hadn’t brought milk the waitress had gone. Had to go and find the waitress to ask for milk. When ordering I lunch asked about vegetables - meals didn’t come with them I was told - just garnish & so I had to ask for vegetables ( this information not on menu). Lunch arrived, vegetables were lovely- my chicken was dry & over salty, my son’s beef he said was okay. After one bite of the chicken I decided I really didn’t like it but no waitress around to complain to & by now busy with more customers. No one came to ask if everything was ok. Very overpriced & poorly cooked meat, I did tell the waiter how poor my chicken was when he cleared our table & that I couldn’t eat it ( my son ate some of it & agreed that it wasn’t nice)but couldn’t get any one’s attention to complain. Bill came & again I voiced my complaint, the response of the waitress was just excuses & condescendingly said she’d take the 12.5% service charge off. Shame as the log fires are lovely & the pub in a lovely location but very disappointed today

Lovely food, beautiful surroundings, elegant understated table settings. The staff are lovely people, but the service was appalling. We had to ask twice for bread and for the time it arrived with all finished of this course after we finished our main course we sat there with dirty plates in front of us for sometime. We eventually asked somebody to clear them away who then stacked the dirty plates on the table in front of us. Some basic training in foodservice would be good. We then sat there for a rather long time waiting for the desert menus which we had to ask for in the end, we just had coffee Which we took in the lounge area so that we could sit in front of the fire as by then the room was rather cold. Yes I go back because the surroundings and food are lovely, but I definitely think there is room for improvement with the level of food service

The courtyard is very special and the food and service was really really good Expect slightly high prices as it is recommended by the Michelin guide and the food we had was really good but maybe only missing that standard by a tiny bit however we only ordered the spaghetti cavolo nero and the fish and chips. Would definately go back there again. Service and ambience was up to michelin guide level.

We were staying so had 2 dinners and 2 breakfasts. Everything was wonderfully cooked and presented. In particular, the beef shin tortellini were stand-out incredible. I'd have them again any day. The mackerel starter too was fabulous. Pork main came with pollenta which to my mind was a mistake although the pollenta was decent. The first night we had to pre-order and lots of us had cheese (choice of 3 from 5). This didn't work as the various (different choices) cheeses were distributed incorrectly. I asked my waitress what cheeses were on my plate and she didn't know. But a small mistake. 2nd night, we ordered there and then and got what we ordered. Wine waiter was a bit serious but helpful with ideas. Breakfasts were fantastic with a superb cooked menu. The mushrooms cooked in butter with garlic and lemon on sourdough was a plate from heaven. Fabulous freshly squeezed juices and very good coffee. All in all, top notch and 5 stars without hesitation.

We made a reservation for 19:00 , we arrived at 18:40 and were told that the restaurant would not open until 19:00 but we could take a drink in the bar , we were shown to the bar and left unattended for 20 minutes as passing staff repeatedly told us “ we will be with you in a moment” ,not the best start to an evening, I might add the bar was empty of guests at the time. Our meal was very disappointing,my wife ordered slow cooked pork and I had Chicken ,there was very little other choice since there were only 4 dishes on the menu . The presentation of the dishes was a complete shock, the pork dish ,served in a bowl ,looked as if it had been dropped on the floor and then scooped up onto the plate,my chicken was reminiscent of a 60’s transport cafe lunch , this is listed as a5 star dining experience, We both felt our food was bland and lacked taste ,my chicken was dry and felt as though it had been pre-cooked and reheated ,vegetables and mashed potatoes, all crammed onto the plate ,not at all attractive to look at,my wife thought her dish lacked spices and was disappointing Service and personnel are good in the restaurant although ,it’s very obvious that the staff are inexperienced and rather nervous , we were never asked if we needed anything during the meal , although having finished our very good deserts and had requested the bill, a waitress came and asked if we would like to see the desert menu This is the third time that we have dined at the Star ,the previous visits were also underwhelming,we put these down to start-up ,and, post Covid, teething issues but this last visit will be just that,ie,………”The last visit”.

The Star Inn has special meaning for my husband and I as we got married there (when it was under the previous management). This was the first time we were back since then (5+ years) and we had wanted to try it since it re-opened. We went in wanting to try the set menu but were told that they don’t serve it on a Sunday (not mentioned on the menu outside). We ordered the beef and while we were waiting we were served a half a slice of bread each with hard butter (being famished we did ask for another half slice each….which at least arrived with spreadable butter). The meal itself was disappointing. We ordered beef and imagined we would get a thicker slicer (what you normally get in a pub) and was given something resembling thin bacon. My beef was ok, my husband didn’t enjoy his. There was a small milk jug (the jug was probably size of a clenched fist) with gravy…only it was half full so we had to ask for a second just so we could get enough for the food. Then there was the potatoes. The poor roast potatoes. They were so hard we struggled to cut them. We couldn’t quite figure out how they managed to make the potatoes rock solid. We did complain, got extra vegetables and 10% off the bill. The staff did ask if we wanted to see the dessert menu and I couldn’t help but laugh while saying “no thanks”. Overall it was a poor experience, overpriced and we can’t say we will recommend it to anyone. Safe to say we won’t be back either.

We missed our boat at Newhaven and decided to drive inland to Alfriston to wait for the next crossing. The bar at the Star was warm and welcoming with a lovely smell of old wood, the staff were particularly polite and friendly, only slightly marred by a rather bossy woman who rebuffed my elderly friend's enquiry about the menu with a patronising "just a moment, darling" ! I have already reviewed this in the main hotel site. The drawing rooms are lovely, comfortable chairs, beautiful view, BUT the food and wine by the glass were truly awful. Very poor quality and very expensive. Never again.

We moved to Pevensey recently and The Red Lion is our new “local”. It’s warm and inviting, the staff are lovely and the food is always brilliant, portion sizes are good and quality of food is on point. Prosecco deals would be amazing as it does put us off slightly the price of a bottle compared to Tesco next door but if you want a night out then it is what it is! We are regulars and enjoy our time here. Music on a Friday/Saturday night would be great instead of Sundays but that’s just us im sure others like it on a Sunday.

This country pub had been on our list for ages and so as it was my birthday weekend we booked for Sunday lunch. We'd checked the menu before booking so we knew the roast was pricey at £24 for the roast beef. We usually pay between £16 and £20 elsewhere. Unfortunately, when it arrived it was disappointing. There was plenty of thinly sliced beef but I found it very fatty and chewy. There were fewer vegetables than expected, half a carrot, 3 very small, very hard roast potatoes and a pile of kale. The Yorkshire pud was large but mainly soggy. The gravy was delicious. Also elements of the dish were less warm than others. The pub is lovely and had a good drinks menu but we were seated in the bar area and had to listen to staff discussing their rotas at length. Perhaps if we'd been in the main restaurant area or outside we'd have had a better experience. Maybe consider your portion sizes especially the veg. We didn't stay for desert.
