We first visited this pub at the beginning of the year when we were new to the area. Looking for places to call our own. Julian and Julian had recently taken over the pub and were working to restore it back to a proper pub status. Since then we have been back regularly and can honestly say it’s now our favourite pub. Such good beer such a nice atmosphere. And a proper fire in the winter. We always get chatting to a new local person. And the Pizzas served almost every night are such a great idea. These guys really know how to run a pub. Go visit. You won’t regret it.

The pub itself it’s located fairly rural but don’t let the drive put you off. The inside is a proper traditional pub setting and a gorgeous fire was lit. Love the smell of a lit fireplace in a pub! Food was very very nice also, good portion sizes and the prices very reasonable. Would certainly be back soon.

Our main meal was very good. (Pie) struggled to choose a starter as only choice of 4, so did not have one Dessert for me disappointing..had apple crumble.. it was a little pot with 3\4 filled with very sweet apple pulp and just a tiny layer of crumble which was the best bit. service was very slow, considering it was a quiet night. But others rave about this pub, so maybe its just us being fussy lol

Words cannot describe the chaotic, rude and incredibly slow service - my mother and I ordered mussels as a main course and waited a good hour for them to be served. We were delighted when they eventually arrived in lovely traditional mussel pots BUT the delight didnt last long when we took off the lids and found that the pots were less than half full of mussels and only lukewarm. I then investigated further only to find that a large majority of the shells were empty - I obviously then looked to see if the mussels had fallen out of their shells and were at the bottom of the pot but sadly not. When I questioned the portion size, and the lack of mussels compared to the number of shells, I was told that that was the normal amount served. There was no apology for them being barely lukewarm either. We left, as did the table next to us who had also had food issues. We will not be returning which is sad as it has all the makings of being a fantastic place to enjoy a meal. Obviously we might have just been unlucky and having read some of the more favourable reviews this is entirely possible.

The Star was one of our favourite pubs, and we have fond memories of a warm welcome, delicious Spanish food, good beer and, if you asked for the specials list, some spectacular wines. We came here many times. We'd heard that The Star no longer specialised in Spanish food and the previous Landlord had moved on, which is why we hadn't visited for some while but reading recent good reviews here thought we'd see for ourselves how things had changed. Well, we wish perhaps we'd stuck with our memories.Maybe Saturday lunch is not the best time to visit. While there were few people in, the bar was dominated by a large family with 4 or 5 very young children, one of whom was noisily unhappy, while the others looked bored. While of course parents have every right these days to take babies and small children into pubs, does it never occur to them that the children might not actually like the place and would be happier somewhere else?Given the only other customers were 2 chaps who were just leaving, nobody was eating there and we didn't like the choice of beers, we decided to go elsewhere. And when we drove past again about an hour later there were no cars outside. A shame, time was on a Saturday lunchtime when the place was full. Perhaps The Star is better in the evenings, I hope so for their sakes, but we won't be hurrying back.

We left are number when booking why were we not informed that there was no menu. To be fair the staff were very polite and attentive. The pub lacked atmosphere no music and looked dirty the mirror on the wall struggled to show a reflection. The card machine would not work when we came to pay. We were last here 8 years ago and like other reviewers disappointed that the then Spanish fair was no longer. Wednesday afternoon lunch and apart from another couple also eating out the front we were alone. Friendly bar staff offered the options of ham egg & chips, rolls with various fillings with salad & chips or (our choice) fish & chips with peas for £6. Excellent quality and acceptable amount (often too big & twice the cost). The best f&c we've had for at least 12 months. We were told it was haddock and the fish is freshly delivered every Wednesday. Pint & half bitter plus 2 spritzers for £22.50. The agreeable interior layout is as simple as in the past but the wisteria over the front is obscuring the THE STAR sign and the exterior is in serious need of a repaint. We enjoyed our visit and will return.

I still have very fond memories of the Star Inn at Lidgate when it had been transformed into an Andalucian cantina. Halcyon days, but things have changed. No longer 'viva espana' more 'd'ye ken John Peel' and lashings of English pub grub. Not that I object to good English hostelry fare, it just came as rather a surprise after bowls of paella had morphed into plates of roast beef. The place was packed. Lots of families with children. All very jolly. Busy and helpful staff, but the food was really very ordinary. Well cooked, but piled too high, too many vegetables, all a bit disapponing and overwhelming. I think I much preferred the 'viva espana' and would prefer that John Peel tidied up his act a bit.

I have been many times to this restaurant under different management and it has always been excellent. But my experience of dinner last night was diabolical and I will not go again very quickly. The inn is lovely and cozy and the staff were very nice and welcoming. But the food quality was incredibly poor and virtually inedible. A very nice plaice was ruined by poor cooking and an extraordinary amount of oil that drowned it, and very amateurish preparation and presentation. Even for a simple pub meal, this would rate very low in my experience and the management needs to pay some serious attention to the overall quality. I hope I hit a bad night because this used to be a gem of a restaurant, but not now on the basis of my experience.

We chanced upon this lovely place after our original destination pub was closed. There's a small sunny south facing garden at the front with chairs and tables for eating out. We ate inside. The interior of this interesting historic timber-framed building is well laid out with comfortable seating. The two people behind the bar were very friendly and service was excellent. The menu for the day was written onto a blackboard and we had soup and a sausage ciabatta with salad, drinks and teas for £20, great value. The food was freshly made, tasty and very nice, very substantial. The setting of the pub is lovely and we noticed on departure that soon the front of the building will be clothed in wisteria. We plan to return with other members of the family. At the back is a large beer garden with children's play equipment.

The Star has been a favourite haunt for many years but sadly seems to be losing it's way. We visited on Mother's Day for lunch and although the food was still sound front of house is struggling to keep up with the top class standards set by Steve the previous exemplary mine host. The lady in charge tried her best but with a busy service the well meaning youngsters who assisted and the kitchen simply couldn't keep up with the orders. Prawn risotto, roast beef were very good for me though my finishing cheese plate lacked any quality. Mrs G's lobster and prawn risotto was Ok but lacked any flavour variety and too much saffron in the risotto. It's a fair journey for us to The Star and with standards falling and competition getting stronger in the area I wonder how many more times we will visit. It was a last minute decision to go to The Star at Lidgate. I have gone over the years and enjoyed Paella but the main draw has always been the big fires and coziness.I booked and then found that the Paella is no longer on the menu. So I was a bit worried what to expect.I presume it is under new ownership now. The interior has been freshened, two huge coal fires were glowing and warming the whole pub up. Great on a February evening. Staff were friendly and efficient. The menu isn't huge but there seemed to be a focus on quality ingredients. We both decided on beer-battered fish and chips. They were superb. Lovely light crispy batter. Superb fish which tasted wonderful, good chips and great portion of peas. Just over a tenner a portion was good value. Called in for an impromptu lunch with my mum having seen the board advertising food all day. We ordered soup with the intention of deciding what to have after that. Sadly we were so disappointed with the soup that we decided not to go further. I understand the aspiration is obviously to be a gastro pub and I don't mind gastro pub prices, and it is such a lovely country pub with big inglenook and super log fire, but I would struggle to be tempted back and I drive past it twice a day. The soup was served in individual charming little jugs, the base of the beautiful earthenware soup bowl into which I was required to pour the soup, was barely covered, there must have been no more than 1/4 pint soup and the dish was stone cold and consequently so was my soup. Now call me ignorant but at least if the soup falls a bit short you can usually rely on a nice crusty bread roll to cheer things up. The single small crunchy slice of what I can only imagine was an artisan loaf was just the final disappointment to what I hoped would be a hearty(ish) starter to lunch. I'm ashamed to say we carried on to Newmarket and had a main course in another pub there. Also a first, never been to a pub with no lime for a lime and soda???

We chose to eat inside, and sadly were the only ones there at that time. Menu was good, with a separate lunchtime menu and some specials on boards. Husband just had a filled ciabatta, and I had a salad, but both were nicely cooked and presented, with plenty of lovely lean bacon.Husband had the local beer, which he said was very good. It's the sort of pub you would really like as your local. I hope it does well under the new management, and more people use it.

Been here a few times recently with the wife and kids 5 & 2 and each time the food and atmosphere has been brilliant. I can't wait for the back garden to be completed so the kids can enjoy the park.

I took the two children for a Sunday lunch and found a warm friendly atmosphere. We all had the roast pork and when it arrived it was very well presented and a good amount too. It was a great roast with the best Yorkshire pudding I've had for a long time, there was plenty of meat and cooked perfectly. Great roast potatoes and the veg was good too. The kids loved it. All in very impressed. Will certainly return again soon.

It is great to an English pub providing for their community. Where many have lost their local and regular trade The Star seems to make every effort to encourage the immediate community to think of this pub as their own.I witnessed the landlord asking the opinions of the locals about his beer and found that a table was, and always is, reserved for those who wish only to have a pint and chat. I felt immediately comfortable and was welcomed onto said table where I conversed with many locals and regulars for many hours while I enjoyed exceptional beer.Whilst I cannot comment on the food, other than to say that it looked amazing, I did not hear of a single grumble. Upon leaving I made a bid to return again soon and I know that I will.A great pub that harks back to a golden era, a showcase for village pubs everywhere.

What has happened to this lovely pub and restaurant? Walked in 12 o'clock on a Sunday looking forward to a quick lunch and a pint. The place was empty but a table wasn't available until 1.30!!!!! (Work that out). We decided to stay for a pint since we realised the pub had recently reopened. The beer was actually very good, however I was quite disappointed that we were asked if we wanted ice in the G&T! We said of course but sadly it was served with no lime!

We had booked a table for 5 people on Saturday night. On arriving the table that had been laid for us was by the front door so very cold with hard bench seating.. We asked if we could move to an empty more comfortable table by the fire but were told that this was reserved for drinkers, although apart from a couple at the bar on bar stools there were no drinkers. We left - so much for a friendly welcome! This is not the right attitude for a newly reopened establishment. Very disappointing and we won't be going back.

The Star has been my favourite local eating pub for several years and has now reopened after renovation. The dining area has been swathed in magnolia, not an obvious improvement and immediately they had run out of any ale on tap. Not the greatest start though the welcome was friendly and warm. Sunday menu of three starters and five mains including two roasts. Starter choice seemed unamiginative with mushroom soup, a tomato salad and mackerel with blue cheese the only dish to tempt any of us. This quirky combination actually worked and I enjoyed it but I don't think it would be to many people's tastes. We all plumped for the roast beef for main which was as delicious as ever - excellent quality meat, perfect roast potatoes, well timed vegetables and all doused in top notch gravy. Deserts of Eton mess, lemon tart and good selection of cheeses all finished the meal on a high note. A good value malbec chosen from a new and interesting wine list complimented the beef perfectly. In summary food as good as ever (though please sharpen up starter choices), service good though impossible to replace the superb Steve and decor simply at best no improvement on what was there previously. We will be back and hope that what I take as teething problems are ironed out and that the Star can recapture my usual 5 star recommendation.

My husband and I decided to take my mother who hasn't been very well lately out for some lunch and she recommended we went to The Star. The Inn looks beautiful and very characteristic from the outside for it to only continue on the inside. We went in and were greeted in a friendly manor, the young boy that was working was very well dressed and polite. We were sat by the gorgeous huge open fire place, which was lovely as it was freezing outside. We all order drinks and a Sunday roast each. It came presented beautifully on the plate and hot! All was extremely tasty, dessert was ordered and again all very nice. This place is definitely a hidden gem.

Beautiful village and the pub is so pretty. Warm welcome, big fires and busy atmosphere. This was the most pleasant of our December pub/restaurant binge. The food is really good, not the best in the area we tried, not far off, but the service is hands down the best we experienced. We had a small issue with a main course, nothing major, but it was handled with beautifully by the landlord. Overall a wonderful all round experience. We will be back.

My boyfriend and I visited last night for a quiet birthday meal, having heard several people say how nice it was. Lovely big open fire, quaint, cosy setting when you walk in and an equally warm greeting from staff. Good choice of wine and ale, lovely menu and we enjoyed some excellent food. Will definitely be visiting again, we really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and flavoursome food. Thank you :)

My first visit to this gem in the Suffolk countryside. Met some friends there for an evening meal. The food was delicious and the staff really helpful and friendly. I can't remember the last time (or anytime fro that matter) when the landlord shook my hand as I left and thanked me for coming. I opted for a venison wellington for my main course. It was perfectly prepared and tasted wonderful. What I loved about this pub was the traditional atmosphere coupled with superb food. You would have to go a long way to find such a nice place to visit. The only thing that marred our visit was a group of very loud cackling women who had no regard whatsoever for other diners!

Recently ate here whilst staying at Old High Hall in Wickhambrook. Our party of 10 all remarked on such lovely food. Lobster, steaks, paella and incredible tapas. Infact we were all so full that we couldn't manage any puddings - we really wanted too as they sounded define. The Landlord was so very friendly and helpful..nothing was too much. He even offered us transport so that no-one needed to drive. I recommend this place 110%. If ever you are in the area a visit is a MUST!

Having been to the Star Inn before as part of a group, I planned to go with my fiance for a meal just the two of us. We were treated very well by the stuff and also the food was incredible. The day's menu was delicious and the main (sea bass and paella) were as fresh and well prepared as it gets. Good wine list and also excellent desserts. Definitely a place to go for if you are looking for excellent food and value for money.

Having spent my father's 80th birthday at the Star Inn at Lidgate on a Saturday night had to post a glowing review of the pub. The food was superb, the pub was cosy with a roaring fire and a nice atmosphere. The landlord was marvellous, so helpful and hospitable, helping me with sorting out the birthday cake and checking all was ok round the table. All 10 of us thoroughly enjoyed our evening and we can be a fussy bunch. Would definitely recommend for great food and great hospitality, will definitely return if we are ever in the Newmarket area in the future.

We read the local book in the room at our hotel, and saw the local write up on this Pub / Restaurant, so thought we would try it, it looks like a house from the outside, but don't be put off, open the door and it all comes to life, bare floor boards, oak tables and chairs, and great great food, husband and wife team, he has great Newcastle accent, and such a nice host, nothing too much trouble, cannot wait to pass by again, this would be worth the journey. this is a must!!!!

Just visited for lunch, I haven't been here for at least 6 years and it's still as pretty as I remembered. The building is old and there are flowers at the entrance and in the small front garden. The young lady serving was very pleasant (pretty blue nails) and the Landlord (I believe) was also welcoming; he promptly cleaned the draught Aspells line so I could have a glass (this hadn't been his intention until I asked, but he was very willing, when many others might say 'sorry, you'll have something else').I ordered the Fritto Misto with green salad, aioli mayonnaise and chips - very tasty but a little rich (that's not to say there was anything wrong with it). This was followed with a Critrus Creme Brulee also very tasty, the citrus wasn't strong (I'm sure there was coconut in there) and accompanied with raspberries and a strawberry. All in all a lovely lunch set in relaxing surroundings.

We visit when we can, we have commented on here before how great it is but it keeps on improving. The friendliest staff you could ever wish to meet. Honestly when you are there it feels like you are life long friends with Steve and co. The food is good, the building is just the epitome of old tradition British pubs and it is so good to see this place busy and buzzing. Really happy for them. We cannot recommend it enough. Maybe have a larger wine list, other than that it's faultless.

The welcome was warm, the service was great and the food was fantastic. We went, as did several of our fellow diners after purchasing a discount voucher. We will be going again and quote happy to pay full price. With dishes such as cauliflower soup with truffle and lobster on the menu with a very good choice of house wine what more could you ask for. We have decided to give up going for a cheap meal once a week to go here once a fortnight - no contest. Keep up the good work.

We keep coming back to The Star as it strikes the perfect balance between ambience, excellent food and genuine and friendly service. Recently back from a week in the Yorkshire Dales The Star so reminds me of the warm hearted service and proper food that you receive in that delightful areas best establishments. Steve and co are perfect hosts and the food has always been excellent in each of our many visits. Our Sunday luncheon was enhanced further by a superb guitarist/vocalist; often you can have a "skywards" look when seeing this kind of entertainment but this guy was simply superb adding another layer to an already exemplary experience. We had the usual spankingly fresh crab mayonnaise and delicious home made humous as starters. Then beef with fabulous duck fat roast potatoes/a superb array of vegetables and enormous Yorkshire puddings. My wife had the salmon with samphire and new potatoes; dressed with a herb butter. All dishes were perfectly seasoned and packed with flavour from high quality ingredient sourcing. Enormous plate of cheese, sponge puddings and ice cream sundaes slated the final room in already satisfied appetites. Good wines from a smallish list - simply top class lunch experience that I couldn't honestly see how could be improved upon!

We visited the Star n the Saturday of a recent visit to Newmarket and were advised by a few people to try the Lidgate Star. As I stated in an earlier review as a retired restaurant owner I can be a bit of a pain but this was just a joy of a meal. As most of he previous reviewers have commented on we recieved a wonderful warm welcome when we entered, nice busy atmosphere and lovely old fires. Menu was nice, great range to it, good wines on offer and a table near the fire. Perfect. We met both the landlord and his wife and they are incredibly friendly people. The service from the landlord was as good as we have had, my wife in particular commented that it was a masterclass, high praise indeed. The food was lovely, cooked to perfection and the pork belly I ordered was a real treat. Whilst we both agreed the food is very very good it was the all round experience that impressed us the most. Great effort from the staff. We will be back.

We visited this pub 3 years ago and it was terrible then and we swore we would never go back. However on Groupon there was a deal for 2 courses and wine for £30. So we thought we would give it another go. On arrival the Bar maid was lovely, My husband had a superb pint of Landlord and I had a lovely glass of wine. We looked at the menu and decided on 3 tapas. A calamari with a paprikai mayo, a crab pate and also some gambas. Normally priced at about £4.95/£5.95 each. The Calamari was nice but 4 rings for £4.95 is a complete rip off. The crab pate came with 2 pieces of what I can only describe as Rock hard toast I really am at a loss as to how you can make bread/toast this hard. So we sent this back and bread was then served to us. The crab pate was tiny again a rip off. The gambas were ok and a few of them. I am aware that these were tapas but they were not priced as tapas and I felt robbed !! For my main I chose Hake wrapped in Parma ham with garlic mash and curly kale with a herb butter. The hake was very overcooked the mash was dry with no garlic in it and there was a tiny bit of kale and no herb butter on the plate. It was probably one of the worst meals I have ever had. My husband chose the paella which was rice in a tomato sauce and again very very poor. This is very sad for me to report this as the pub is stunning inside, the 2 members of the front of house were really lovely and although I was asked if everything was nice I just agreed as you really don't want to feel awkward so I admit I did not give them chance to put anything right. I don't understand the good reports this pub receives about the food. It was terrible. After listening to the other 3 couples eating at this pub on this Thursday evening all of them were on the Groupon deal which probably tells you something? I can only hope that this pub gets rid of the current chef and employs someone better to give this lovely pub the food and foot fall it deserves.

I took my wife here fro her birthday, a bit of a trek from where we live but well worth it. The food was well presented and tasty and the drinks suitably priced. We were early but that did not present a problem. The staff were friendly and attentative. Previous reviews have centred on lots of fish but we found the menu well balance, yes I did have fish but that was through choice. We will certainly go back probably for Sunday lunch which needs booking two weeks in advance.Give it a go if you are in this part of Suffolk
