The Dog and Partridge in St Edmundsbury

Venue great staff great however food not so great. Friday night ordered fish and chips. The menu states hand battery fish triple cooked chips and crushed peas. I can confidently say the fish wasn't hand battered on the kitchen. The peas were not crushed and the chips were not ever triple cooked nothing more than Mcane home fries. Dontbget me wrong it wasn't awful but not as menu described. Such a shame in Geene Kings flagship pub.

Awful experience. The drinks were overpriced and the food , we had the roast beef, was frankly terrible. the beef was overcooked and veiny the veg burnt. We ordered desert and it was the smallest portion they could serve. We had booked in advance, a table for 8. If you cannot handle those numbers just say no! Note I'm not complaining about the cost of the food but the quality. simply put it was unacceptable.

I’m not one to usually write reviews… however! Best food and place to stay— our only regret is that we could not stay here longer. Very much looking forward to coming back. Neither me nor my partner were expecting such gorgeous rooms: refurbished and beautiful down to the smallest details. Truly beautiful and such a comfortable stay! The staff and owners were incredibly nice and helpful, going above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and welcome. Also… the food is 10/10. I would recommend anyone — locals and tourists alike, to stay here. Our only regret is we have to head back to NYC and cannot stay longer but I would have loved to stay here for a week or so more. Thank you so much Dog and Partridge for making our stay so special

We stayed here for one night in a beautiful room. The place was buzzing, lots of people. The staff were friendly and helpful. We had dinner and breakfast. The starter, deep fried squid and the dessert, pear frangipane, were particularly lovely. Would definitely recommend.

I stayed at the Dog and Partridge with my partner and we were shocked when we walked into the room. Everything from the gorgeous bathroom tiles to the beautiful pillows and bed to the complimentary teas and coffees. Coming from NYC, we were hoping for something quaint and relaxing and D&P certainly delivered. The owners and staff are incredibly helpful and kind and went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed and were okay. The room is subtly stylish with the most beautiful furniture and brass accents in the bathroom and the room… even the light switches were beautiful!? The food was delicious too and the area is central to historic Bury St Edmund’s and only a short walking distance to the Abbey Gardens and town center. I can’t thank the staff enough and will treasure my time and memories here. Our only regret is not being able to spend more time here. Thank you, D&P!!!

The pub has just been refurbished so thought we would give the new menu a chance. Having picked our table it was a bit dirty from the previous customers, on asking for it to be cleaned we were amazed that the young lady behind the bar passed us the cleaning bottle and cloth so we could do it ourselves! Never had this happen before in any pub/restaurant... We chose our food choices which arrived in good time but unfortunately the food was extremely disappointing, the chicken kiev was a hard disc that could have been used as a weapon and I have uploaded a photo of half of a steak ciabatta, the amount of steak included was a joke, this was £9.25! They had bothered to ask me how I would like the steak cooked but the slithers of steak were so tiny there was no point, it was either cooked or not (luckily it was cooked) The fish & chips on the menu stated crushed peas but it arrived with normal garden peas, no sooner had our food arrived the person who I assume was the chef came out from the kitchen, backpack on and off, maybe this was a rushed job but it was very poor. It is a lovely building and the new garden looks great but the staff have badly let this down which is a great pity.

Booked B&B via Greene King on arrival told no, just room only. Food service very slow, cold roast dinners which were returned. Staff extremely stretched and too many covers booked in for the staff employed. Food uninspiring. Spoilt our friends get together. Rooms better but stains on carpets & lock broken.

You just can’t beat the D&P best pub in town great food and service.

We booked dinner on Sunday for 10 People, I emailed in to book as website only allows up to 9 people. Only issue I had was response to email, but this so could have been my end? From organising to final drinks and desert, The Dog and Partridge atmosphere, staff, food was absolutely phenomenal! We all were in agreement that we felt we was in a silver service venue. The Politeness of all staff and quality to detail was simply awesome. I just hope that we left a substantial tip? But that part was taken out of my control. I would recommend the push for further coffees or drinks at end. This may give more revenue? Perhaps? But overall we definitely will be going back.

Pros - refurbished rooms. Much better than previously. Although the lock was already damaged and carpet had stains. A little more attention to detail needed. Outside area attractive although plants were dying! Majority of staff friendly. Cons - had lunch booked with friends. All of the Sunday roast dinners were served cold! All were returned and replaced. This was after a long old wait for our food. Salad was uninspiring and the fish cakes pretty basic served on a small plate. It was obvious that the staff were stretched and couldn’t cope. This did spoil our stay. No one wants a cold roast dinner 😶 This is a greene king managed pub and one of our party works for the company. So a pretty poor show from the Dog & Partridge food wise. If the restaurant improved we would go back.

Had an amazing meal. Recommend the crab burger. Lovely staff. I understand that Greene King directors eat there!

Further to the management comments. (which I appreciate). Just to be clear I have NOT been contacted by central reservations or any arm of Greene King. I guess somebody is being given misleading information.

A fab, fab pub...terrificly friendly, great beers and food...it's well worth a visit.

Beautiful pub, the team were excellent and it's in a prime location for visiting the entire town.

We were staying locally for a weekend away and booked a table on saturday evening as dogs are welcome which we needed. From start to finish this was an excellent experience. The website is informative and online booking was easy, the table was ready and all staff friendly and helpful, the food was great, promptly served and reasonably priced, the ambience is family and dog friendly. This truly is a fabulous place and we would recommend. My only caution is that there is no carpark so you need to use public parking which on a Saturday is free after 6pm so book a table after that.

Located right next door to the brewery in older part of town. Pleasant atmosphere with standard Greene King food served. Probably worth booking if going doing busy hours.

The rooms are stunning! Recently refurbished and a lovely bit of luxury. Breakfast was good and good prices for the location. BUT: When I arrived, I was told that parking was on a first-come-first-served basis. This wasn't described anywhere on the website. The car park was full, and so my husband drove around for 30 minutes trying to find space. When I asked for help about this (having left him driving round Bury!) the staff member told me of 2 nearby car parks that were unavailable due to varying opening times and the market. They weren't very understanding or helpful in the situation. When my husband eventually found a space that was in the complete opposite end of town, (which we had to pay for - £8 in total!) he realised that he would need to move the car again at 8am the following morning. In all, it tainted our stay, added significant stress and extra expense to our visit, and was a huge inconvenience. If we had known about the lack of available parking (6 spaces, 9 rooms), then we would not have chosen to stay at this hotel.

Male staff ok had to ask twice for the table to be cleared. Female staff Unattentive and bored and knew nothing about beer . Food except for the duck over cooked and steak pie lacked steak more like gravy pie. Chicken pie dry and lacked sauce. We would not go again.

Stayed here with my husband for the weekend, was excellent. The room was stunning and very spacious. The food was amazing and the staff bend over backwards to ensure you have everything you need. And are so friendly and welcoming. I certainly will be going back. Highly recommend

We stayed here for one night on a visit to Bury St Edmunds. Got to say its 10 out of 10 for everything! The location is very central and parking on site. The room we had was newly decorated and was to a high standard, with complimentary beers from the brewery! The atmosphere in the pub was lovely, dogs allowed and the staff worked really hard all the time. We had our evening meal here, and even though we hadn't booked the manager found us a table, perfect service. The food was delicious. Would definitely recommend and would love to return.

Had a lovely lunch of seafood risotto followed by sticky toffee pudding and custard all washed down with a lovely pint of "Dog and Partridge" bitter. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Called in without booking and was offered a choice of tables. Lovely decor and really nice ambience.Our waitress was welcoming, attentive and helpful, drinks arrived within a few minutes and the food served soon after which we thoroughly enjoyed, prices are very reasonable. Stayed here for the weekend our room was amazing. The rooms have just had a refit and we were lucky to get the room with the beautiful bath in the bedroom. The en-suite also had a beautiful big shower all done to a high standard....

First time coming to the D&P for food this Sunday, so we were very interested to try the Sunday Roast. As a party of 4, we all opted for the beef roast. The service was incredibly slow, and it took a long time between ordering to starters and then from starters to main. When the dinner arrived there was very little gravy for the meal, so we all straight away ordered extra gravy to go with the dinner. The extra gravy took around 10 minutes to then arrive, which meant most of us were at least half way through our meal by this point, as we tried waiting for it and the dinner had started going cold. The food itself was nice, wouldn’t say it was anything to write home about, but pleasant. The beef was lovely, potatoes nice, but weirdly half of the plate was taken up by about 1/4 of a whole cabbage just chopped into whole slices (see photo for explanation of this). All of us were unimpressed by the cabbage taking up so much of the plate, it was very difficult to cut and eat too as the centre wasn’t cooked fully. On arrival you can’t even see the beef as it’s covered up with the huge cabbage block. One single floret of cauliflower, (if that) was the “cauliflower cheese” addition. Pudding I opted for the chocolate and caramel torte and my partner ordered the apple pie and requested this with custard instead of ice cream, although when it came it was still with ice cream. My chocolate torte was incredible and the ice cream was great too. Would definitely opt for this again, but a shame the apple pie order wasn’t amended to custard. Overall good, service slow, not sure we’d return for a Sunday roast, but would maybe like to try some of the other items on the menu.

I visited last week with my friends and my Doberman Arnold .. who sometimes people do judge him due to size and his breed .. some pubs we have been to you do feel unwelcome because of this. The D&P welcomed him with open arms .. he certainly felt the bees knees .. he was even given a small bowl of treats and water and lots of cuddles and strokes … Arnold definitely found his favourite pub in Bury st Edmunds! Forgotten how nice this place is. Beautiful garden patio area perfect for drinks outside and great decor inside. Loved the cute sanitiser dispensers, nice to see someone making an effort to make things look well cared for. Me and my husband have just stayed at this place and had the worst experience ever with the most rude erratic abusive horrible manageress we have ever encountered, we have left a review you of this type ever before but had to on this occasion due to the treatment we have just received from her and shouting at us to call the police for complaining about our room and the many faults with them we are professional people and do not complain for the sake of complaining were as follows a hole in the bed sheet sink would not hold water and had to remove the plug with two spoons towel rail hanging off the wall toilet roll holder hanging vertically on the wall toilet seat hanging off dirty carpets rubbish left in the wardrobe no heating in the bar for breakfast to name but a few thoughts uncomplaining in a professional manner to the assistant manager who could not deal with our complaints we were demanded to leave the premises and threatened by her mother who we were informed to be the manager s OMG I have never ever been treated or spoken to like this before and pushed out of the door door and told not to come back and to get off the premises do not stay here here if you want a relaxing and chill Time and our of a nervous disposition we will be contacting Greene King Brewery over this matter we are totally gobsmacked about this experience not acceptable at £100 per night excluding breakfast we have stayed in many places that have been a lot less money and everything was perfect oh and we were threatened also with the police being called staff need educating on how to treat customers in a fair and understandable manner not pushed out of the door and told never to come back again I think Greene King may lose a lot of customers if there pub I'll treating customers like this
