The Star and Dove in Bristol, City of

The Star & Dove has been on a roller coaster ride recently. It's busy these days and the atmosphere is good too. The beer I had (I forget what it was), was well kept. The tables and bar was kept nice and clean too. Bar staff were smiley and friendly.

Lovely atmosphere in this pub not like a lot of the local pubs around here, Roy, kal and Simon are lovely lads and always make you feel welcome, the pool table and food available is a lovey feature which makes a good asset to the boozer

This place is amazing! Service and atmosphere 10/10 we had a roast which is honestly the best we have had in Bristol and the staff are so friendly and attentive we will make this our regular pub moving forward.

My favourite place to be! Homley open fire, Roasts, lovely food menu, the sea bass is my favourite, amazing drinks selection, it has everything, family and dog friendly. Spacious but cozy, also shows the sport in one room on projector, comedy nights, quizzes coming, love love the open mic night run by callum aka cal, he always makes us smile, very attentive! He takes pride in his job, serves us always with a smile and is always genuinely interested in how we are! Thankyou star and dove your a real vibe 💜

Lovely large pub, divided into several sections (pool table room, cosy fireplace area, stage performance section). Beer seemed fairly priced if not on the cheaper side and Cal is an excellent barman.

This is my local pub, so l'll try to summarize my impressions. It has a very homey atmosphere, and Roy, the bartender, is amazing - he knows everyone and makes an effort to build personal connections. The prices are great, and the food (chicken wings is the only thing I ate there) is decent. I am a gluten free person and I don't drink beer, this place has an amazing cider - Cheddar Valley - I couldn't fine anywhere else.

Travelled to see the Jonny Henderson Trio play at The Star and Dove and I wasn’t disappointed. Fabulous band playing in a fabulous venue. The staff were fantastic the atmosphere in the main bar was great- warm and inviting - food was great too. Music played in a side room with great sound. A gem of a Pub just a short walk away from Temple Meads station. I wish this was my local.

Popped in last minute for roast. Food was so delicious couldn't fault it all. Huge portions and the cheese cake was really yummy and creamy

Me & the wife visited the pub recently , we ordered steaks medium rare and was not disappointed, expected chips & sauce but was mildly surprised to see truffle Parmesan salad, and beautifully cooked charred cherry tomatoes. Worth the money, We will definitely be coming back!

Went to Star and Dove for the first time since it changed hands. Food was delicious and a lot more accessible in terms of price point and palette.Had the ribs which were proper meaty, fries were crisp and tasty. The pub is clearly still finding it's feet after new owners, but it's still lovely and cozy and has a great atmosphere. Really looking forward to seeing what's to come down the future.

Outstanding food by an excellent chef. But, the negatives. I should have checked the bill, because I was charged for 3 pints instead of 2, the water was not, as you would expect, free. £4 odd for a bottle. And of course, a 10% service charge. But the young woman serving us was very nice. If you are happy to pay through the nose, then go! But double check the receipt. I think you could go elsewhere and be satisfied just as much. 6/10.

Don't be deceived by the exterior.... This is not normal pub food! The grub here is insanely good from the black treacle based bread through to the mains. Had the cod and ox cheek for the latter which were both outstanding. Only niggles - chocolate mouse was more of a sauce. Shame the fire wasn't on, or candles on the tables for ambiance. Some of the best grub in the city here awaits.

I went to a stand up comedy show here and it is a very pleasant looking pub. The comedy room was nice with a good size stage. The compere was tedious and unintelligent and asked everyone in the audience what work they did. He was so dim that he didn't understand what the jobs were so it was a pointless warm up. There were two good comedians, an Irish Jamaican guy who was charming and funny. The other good one was a Chinese girl Jessica Lo who was also funny and endearing. When they announced a second interval I left because two intervals are annoying and just a ploy to get us to buy more alcohol.

Bit pricey but nice atmosphere.

Me and my my partner went to the Star and Dove for my birthday on Sunday and this is the first time we have eaten there. We had the most excellent Sunday roast. I would give it at least 10 out of 10! More like 20 out of 10! As I walked in the pub I was greeted with Happy Birthday! They had obviously remembered. Great staff, so friendly and efficient and the service was incredible. We were treated like royalty. Lots of nice touches, lovely linen napkins and water at the table. The roast dinner is the best we have EVER had. We ate every little bit. My partner said his beef was incredible and my vegetarian celeriac was so tasty. It really was excellent. The carrot, celeriac puree, greens, roasties and Yorkshire pudding were all 100% perfect. The couple that run this pub, the chef and the lovely girl front of house, do a superb job in making you feel so welcome - as do all the staff. We normally just go for a drink - they do the best Sauvignon Blanc (always really cold and served in a lovely glass). This is definitely the best roast ever. Thank you Star and Dove team. You do a great job. We will be recommending you and we will be back soon for another lovely roast dinner!

Young couple running this pub are doing a fantastic job of running a great pub and restaurant. The guy is a highly talented chef, and his partner is a great front-of-house and bar manager. She is particularly knowlegable about their food. My wife and I had dinner here on Saturday with a couple of Bristol friends who recommended this place knowing that we are keen on good quality food. We were not disappointed - I had slow-braised beef cheek which was so tender and well flavoured, I don't think I've had a better example. My wife was wowed by the Cornish sole. Not only was the food amazing for what you might expect in a pub environment, but the cask ales were very well-kept and in fine condition. Believe me, this is not always the case, even on so called Real Ale pubs. All in all, a fantastic experience with the icing on the cake being that the proprietors are such a lovely and friendly couple. HIGHLY recommended.

Can't comment on the food side, but as a pub this place is such a let down. Always cold in winter and extortionate prices. No complaints about the staff or anything, but I don't understand how this pub consistently gets it so wrong. The back room is huge; plenty big enough for a warm, welcoming area but it's always depressingly dreary and FREEZING in there, so people end up crammed into the front room where there aren't enough tables. I know we're all suffering through austerity, but paying £6.20 for 1 (one) pint you'd at least expect to be able to take your coat off. With better lighting, better heating and more reasonably priced drinks, this could be a proper local. As it is, it's just sad, cold and expensive. A real shame.

This was one of the best roasts I’ve had in Bristol. Beef was cooked perfectly (rare) and the roasties were crisp and delicious. My partner had the roast pork and that was also incredibly delicious. The hot chocolate mousse was also lush!

My partner brought us here for our anniversary. Sadly the food was a real pretentious mishmash (a lot of purée in every meal including a really unattractive grey sludge in the main), we were freezing cold in the restaurant, and the service was absolutely awful. Wildly overpriced; we’ve spent the same amount of money at Michelin-starred restaurants in London. And the level of quality/overall experience here in no way felt aligned with, or deserving of the steep prices. Firstly, we went on a cool night in early October and the restaurant was freezing. People were eating in their coats…at this point it should be fairly obvious to light a fire or turn on the heating, but it seemed management couldn’t read the room there. The service was incredibly sloppy and careless…spending so much, you’d expect more of a well-rounded experience, which could be as minor as making a small note as to who’s eating what on a small table of two people. I had to ask for cutlery twice when I already had a plate of food in front of me, and at every stage of the meal, “right, who’s having the XYZ??” just seemed so out of place and charmless when you’re digging deep into your pockets. The waiter got one of our drinks order confused, and then later on, after saying he’d remove it from our bill we discovered we’d still been charged. We didn’t really feel like they gave a hoot about us to be completely honest. My partner’s wine glass had also been unhygenically cleaned and imparted the wine with a stench of fish. It was quite shocking. Thankfully on that occasion they were apologetic but wow, that really should not be something happening to customers. The menu was really confusing, and when the waitress tried to explain, only led to further confusion. Firstly, small plates really aren’t tapassy small plates as they’re served in huge domed bowls. just call them “starters”. “Snacks” as a header for the menu too feels like it belongs somewhere much more casual. The experience overall was unnecessarily pretentious and lacking any real substance. I’d really urge you to strip things back to wholesome pub fayre and get solid on the basics first before aiming for the stars, as this was all very shaky. I’d go as far as to warn friends to steer clear of the restaurant at this pub, unfortunately.

I went with 3 friends. It was a very cold night, and the dining room was also quite cold - we kept our thick jumpers on. The cling film on the windows didn't make for adequate insulation. We were one of only two tables eating, but our food took an hour to arrive, and my dish was only tepid. Friendly staff but the experience could have been better. A shame.

Newstead is an amazing chef and the roasts here are literally TO DIE FOR! Everyone ordered the beef and it was exquisite. Even the glazed carrot that comes with the roast is a show stopper. Can't say I've ever said that about a carrot before.

We had a lovely four-course dinner here. The autumn menu is absolutely delicious, and they were very understanding about rescheduling our booking. Lovely service and ambiance. Definitely recommend if you find yourself in Totterdown.

My husband and I came here to celebrate our anniversary. We'd both flagged up some health conditions to the staff when we booked, and they couldn't have been more attentive or supportive. Not only that, but the food was absolutely superb (and perfectly cooked) and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. With a seasonal menu using local produce, thorough attention to detail and genuine care for what they do, I'm surprised that the place isn't packed to the rafters every night! If you're happy to venture away from the centre of town for the evening, this is the place to go.

This place used to have good food at reasonable prices and good portions. Not any more. We used to love this place. Maybe on a tasting menu you could give meals this small. When talking to manager he just said they don’t do pub meals.

Simply WOW! I went with my mum for dinner tonight and the food was amazing! The service was excellent and the wine delicious. The ingredients were so fresh that you can literally taste every part of the meal which was presented beautifully. This is the first time i have been here but it will defiantly not be that last. What a little gem!

We had booked a table for two for lunch. We frequent the S&D for their utterly amazing Sunday Roast but fancied trying the lunch. It was absolutely delicious 10/10 roast egg yolk starter and octopus both were delicious. For main we had roast duck with spring and I had the halibut mouth-wateringly delicious both service with triple cooked chips. We are already looking at dates to go for lunch again. A hidden gem in Totterdown so worth a visit highly recommended you certainly won’t be disappointed. Service was tops too.

Ate here last night, food was lovely, very tasty. However portion size versus price seems to be way off track, there doesn’t seem to be much difference in size between small plates and large plates. Small plate pork belly was same size as large plate duck. 1 sirloin steak looked like it had been cut in to 2 portions. Sorry won’t be eating here again, far better places in Bristol to eat.

Had a fabulous Sunday lunch here recently with my family. There was a choice of meats. But first we had starters! They were a visual work of art and they tasted delicious too! The main course came with all the trimmings plus a sharing for two pot of cauliflower cheese! Empty plates all round! Desserts were another work of art! I think we tried all the selection on offer. The attention to detail in all respects was first class and the hospitality was exceptional! Will definitely visit again soon!

Watch out, there's a 10% gratuity automatically added to your bill. Just look at the bottom of the menu. To context your reply. You're running a pub, not a restaurant. The background music was awful. Being a DJ for over 30 years, I've been requested to play some weird and wonderful genre's. Really delicious food, lovely atmosphere and overall a really nice pub, that we are really pleased to have on the door step. The only complaint is that the main courses are truly TINY and most didn't come with vegetables/potatoes etc (my fish dish came with one piece of asparagus!). For those prices a side dish of choice should really be included (or even just a few potatoes / a bit more veg added to the plates). Living a 2 minute walk from this place, I have driven and walked past it many times since it's refurbishment.Having just had Sunday roast there, it is a mixed blessing. On one hand we have found an exceptional restaurant, with beautifully prepared dishes and excellent flavour combinations. On the bad hand, my wallet cries at what will soon become a regular haunt.The three of us plumped for three courses, the crab muffin was exceptional; balancing the delicate flavour of crab with a nice zingy hint of lemon on a buttery muffin. The roast pork was excellent and the roast potatoes were perfectly crispy and fluffy at the same time.At approximately £50 a head for 3 courses, drinks and coffee this place is a gem. I am looking forward to visiting to try the usual menu.

I've kept an eye on this pub over the years as a local, and I am so pleased this amazing building and venue is seeing its potential.Warm and welcoming, friendly and patient staff that went above and beyond for me and my partner. This little gem is a real hidden secret of Bristol.The food was stunning, we previously ate the smaller plates menu known as 'bar snacks' and these little dishes really pack a punch and show off the chefs abilities. That encouraged us to book in again for the main menu evening offering. We were lucky enough to get a table for the A la carte menu and I struggled to hold my excitement as the dishes arrived.Each item of the dish perfectly complimented each other and you could tell the theme of each dish and that every element was prepared to be the tastiest is could possibly be. Washed down with the suggested wine pairings our server suggested, the whole experience was a dream.Highly recommended, these guys will blow up soon and be one of the best in Bristol, but for now I'm enjoying this little slice of paradise on my front door.

Had Sunday lunch here with family. The beef with yorkshire pudding, which by the way is the size of Yorkshire, was delicious. Beautifully cooked beef. Very juicy and tender. We shared the cauliflower cheese which was delicious. I would recommend not eating for ar least 24 hrs before you attempt lunch. It us such a good size portion. Of course I always have to leave room for dessert and the Chocolate gateau is like a mix between a very rich chocolate tort and cake. The orange sauce was divine and the little scoop of icecream complimented it so well.The staff are very friendly and the service is very efficient. Well done guys. I will definitely eat here again.

Despite living in the area, I had no idea this local pub had transformed into a high-end restaurant until I happened to stop in for a drink. Going back for dinner, despite the high prices, it exceeded my expectations. Every single dish was either excellent or exceptional. I'd compare it with restaurants in town like Tare or even the Michelin-starred places. To name just one item, the langoustine, salmon, and lobster cabbage roll was superb. The sweet corn, apple, and sorrel bisque on which it was served was surprisingly rich and sweet sauce for this kind of item, but that surprise it was made it stand out. (By contrast, I remember having a lobster cabbage roll at Michelin-starred Wilks that was much more boring.) From the bar menu the octopus and crispy oysters were similarly outstanding. The smoked salmon with blinis and scampi fris were very good, but not quite at the same level. Wine and dessert also excellent, and beautiful garden. My only criticism would be that hte beer selection is downright disappointing. Why a pub in Bristol would fail to have a good selection of local beers, since several of the local breweries are so outstanding, is beyond me. Lots of mediocre beers from huge industrial breweries, not enough from all the great smaller breweries all over the UK. But as long as you're happy to have wine instead, I can't recommend this place highly enough.
