The food was amazing. However, it took time more than 40 minutes to get it even though there were only 3 tables of customers.

We treated friends to dinner at the weekend. My friend’s starter (bang bang cauliflower) was inedible as it was hard. Next the aubergine curry, again too difficult to cut into. The fish main course at nearly £30 was average at best. Sticky toffee pudding was one of the worst we have had. All ice cream was off as freezer was broken. Very sad as used to be our go to local. Won’t be going back.

Very disappointing - visited for lunch, plenty of room in car park and were shown to a nice table. Order taken promptly and food arrived soon after. However we were then left - we had to ask for desert menus and then no one came to take our order despite the fact that we caught the eye of the waiter twice. Eventually paid the bill and left. Please spend a little time on staff training!

Returning with high hopes and expectations perhaps meant that the shortcoming might have felt exaggerated The food was at best ordinary, looking and tasting as if the menu had been trimmed by an accountant. We started with Bang Bang Cauliflower, nothing to complain about but nothing special either, just a pottery bowl with four small heads of cauliflower in a nice coating. The aged burger was more burnt than aged, looking rather lonely on the plate with a basket of fries and not much in the bun either. The Brick Lane roasted aubergine and vegetable curry was much tastier and filled the bowl, but was not much more than a few potatoes and aubergine pieces with a small grilled half aubergine on top. An error or misunderstanding on our part and a very ordinary glass of wine at £11.50 and beer that seemed not to be in great condition capped off a disappointing meal. Probably better to come back on a sunny lunchtime, sit outside and enjoy the location and hope that the menus have been updated but it will be sometime before we return.

Update April 2nd 1720 Ricardo - thank you for your reply (of sorts) which is totally inadequate....hardly surprising given the farcical way in which you evidently run things. There's nothing else to discuss save you doing the decent thing and refunding the money that I did pay! The experience you gave my family and I was appalling, the experience of that of at least two other families who complained on the day was also appalling. So please, spare me the sanctimonious 'sorry you were frustrated / drop me an email to discuss further bit...!' You left young staff at the front end of your own organisational and leadership shortcomings without any support last Saturday....where was your manager on the day? He avoided me like the plague instead of having the decency to front up....I paid for the food we eventually got...I should have paid nothing! Disgraceful. Saturday 30th March Just the worst service ever! Firstly, top marks to Ella for her personal efforts in dealing with a number of very cross customers this Saturday lunchtime, of which I was one. She was left completely without any support from her manager (maybe managers...) yet still managed a smile. I'd booked lunch at 1pm for my wife, daughter and I, a rare get together as my daughter lives in London. Half hour after ordering 2 x burgers and a minute steak, the manager (yep...know your name but I'll save you from the further embarrassment and won't name you) came to us to say our order had been overlooked and we should have it within ten minutes. Fair enough. Half hour later no food, other people arriving after us getting food. So I went and asked him what was going on, said he'd check, never bothered to come back to me. Eventually my wife's steak and my daughters burger turned up, nothing for me....Had to complain to another manager (I presume as she was dressed differently) who said she'd be back with my burger. Never got it and had to then speak to Ella....a burger turned up, 80 minutes after I'd ordered by which time the moment had passed.....then I got a bill with a service charge...Many unhappy customers at The Stag today....feel very sorry for Ella for having to field all the anger from people. The manager's absence from the frontline when people were complaining was as deliberate as it was shameful. Avoid this place....they'd run out of most things on the very basic 11am-3pm menu, including by the way any mayo to go with the burger...total rubbish. I eventually paid for what I had, had the service charge removed....if the manager had anything about him I'd have not been charged anything. Family time is rare, to be valued....today at The Stag what should have been a lovely family lunch in lovely surroundings was totally ruined in every way... Ella? Get yourself a job where you are supported by someone who appreciates the great job you do, rather than taking your efforts for granted as I witnessed today. Poor.

We booked breakfast at the pub as we have eaten dinner there a few times and have been really impressed. Unfortunately, the breakfast fell short of our expectations. My husband ordered the “full English breakfast” which the menu said included sausages, Portobello mushroom, eggs and black pudding. The breakfast actually only had one sausage, one egg, a tiny slice of mushroom and no black pudding. My husband also said his food was lukewarm. I ordered the Eggs Royale which was very nice, but the “full” English was a real let down and we felt the menu was deceptive.

We booked for Friday lunch inside as The Stag is just off the A3 south of Guildford and on our way home to Petersfield and sounded attractive. Indeed, the appearance, location and first impressions were all positive. Ordering was suitably friendly and efficient. The menu is a cut above a typical pub which is good and can be seen online with prices - good. We had scallops as one starter and were pleased that there were four, well presented. Mains were the chicken and leek pie and fish and chips; the haddock was a noticably generous size and well cooked. But, and for us big buts, the delivery of the food was slow. In particular the mains took an hour and twenty minutes from when we were seated to arrive. We enquired with the waitress and were told that "everyone arrived together". That's odd, as the online booking system allocates slots at each 15 minutes from 12.00 to late afternoon, clearly designed to spread the load on the kitchen and staff. That part of the booking system is clearly not working. The second 'but' is that the dining room is terribly noisy; lots of hard reflective surfaces. Noise abatement technology is well proven and readily available. We don't understand why some venues don't install remedial measures. It would result in a much more pleasurable dining experience! Taken together we opted not to have dessert or coffee!! 10% service charge added to the bill. The important Food Standards Agency Hygiene Rating is a five, the top mark; last review in December 2021. Expected but that's excellent. Toilets were clean, modern and spacious. Adequate parking spaces. It is good to see thet the General Manager responds to TA reviews, very few do systematically. So, overall not as we had expected and we won't be back unfortunately. A pity.

Excellent value room. Tastefully decorated to a high standard with multiple facilities available within the room - has everything you need and nothing you don't, lovely hot shower too. Initially on arriving in the evening, thought you might be able to hear noise from the pub downstairs, but no noise, really well sound-proofed or maybe room is further away from the pub area, then at night when it is very quiet, you can hear the wonderful gentle rushing of the running River Wey! Lovely breakfast too! Highly recommend staying here!

I decided last minute to give it a try with a visiting friend after my son Sunday game: they had no tables till late so we chose to go for dinner time. It turns out that they serve Sunday lunch all day long till 8.00 pm and booked for 7.45 pm. At around 6.00 pm they called saying that it had been an extra busy day so only two selection of the Sunday lunch were left available along the regular menu, they apologized and gave us the option to cancel, but l we decided to still go and kept the reservation for 7.00 pm. When we arrived, we saw the sign, we could not find the parking and entrance that is located at the bottom of a steep lane from the narrow road, so we called in and the manager told us to turn back from our position and offered to meet us at the road and we saw him waving a light to indicate where to turn. They have a parking between the restaurant entrance and some cottages right up the river and we could hear it flowing. The place was packed, all the several tables in the large room were full, it is clearly a favorite in the area for Sunday menu. We ordered the options available and one at la chart that arrived fairly fast in consideration of the number of guests that kept coming in; the waitresses were very nice and helpful with smiles; the manager brought a bunch of treats for our dog; the food was quite good and we enjoyed the whole experience very much, so will be back on a warm day to enjoy lunch outdoor: they definitely know how to keep customers happy also at peak crowded times. Well done!

My wife and myself - together with my brother who now lives in Godalming - had lunch earlier today at the impressive Stag on the River located at Eashing which is a 5-10 minute drive from Godalming. It was our first visit to this impressive property which is indeed on the river and would be a most attractive spot to sit outside when the drier and warmer weather finally arrives. For now, we had booked to have lunch inside (plenty of options but don’t come along on a Sunday without a booking!) and we were promptly shown to a nice table at the far end of the property. Both our food and drinks orders were also promptly taken and - after enjoying French Onion Soup & Scotch Egg starters - all three of our main course Roasts (Chicken, Lamb & Pork - together with a good range of vegetables and a nice thick gravy - with extra Rosst Potatoes & Yorkshire Puddings available if you manage them!) were delicious. As was my Bramble & Custard desert coupled by excellent service throughout our stay. All in all, a most enjoyable Sunday Lunch - one we should plan on repeating when - and if - the British Summer finally arrives!!

This place is great for a cosy meal. It’s a very quaint pub with lovely rooms. The room I had was small but perfect for me and my dog. The room was dog friendly and they provided a dog bed, blanket, water and food bowls, and a treat which my girl greatly appreciated after a long drive! The en suite was good, plenty of toiletries, bath robe and loo roll, only complaint was that the shower only had an above head outlet, bit annoying if you want to keep your hair dry! And also harder to wash effectively for me personally. The bed was comfortable and the duvet and pillows were good quality. The room was warm and had a decent tv, kettle, coffee machine. A fridge is in the hallways with your room name on a shelf and fresh milk provided too. The only thing I didn’t like about the room was the choice of paintings, fox hunting, I do think some things belong in the history books and I’d rather not look at cruelty in action. Other than that the room was lovely. Breakfast was amazing, so tasty and the lady serving couldn’t have done more to accommodate us and my dog. I also had lunch and dinner there too which were both pleasant. The scallops were a bit small but tasty. Overall the facilities and food were lovely and I’d definitely stay again.

I booked a table for tow to celebrate my husbands 75th birthday. Our table was booked for 2.30. We arrived early and let them know. We sat at the bar and had a drink but we could see there was an empty table for two in the window. We were told that it was booked. At 2.30 a couple came in and were shown directly to a table. We asked why we had not been shown the table as we had been waiting for 20minutes. Eventually we were shown a table which was in a very narrow position right at the base of some steps, so every time the staff would have passed we would have run the risk of having something spilt down our necks or being bumped into. We said we did not like the position of the table and asked for some where else. We were told there was no where else even though the table for two in the window was still empty. We left. Very disappointed especially as this was for my husbands birthday which they knew when I booked.

The waiting and bar team were quick, very polite and provided excellent individual service to all diners... The menu is small, interesting, with a daily 'specials board' selected from local producers. Our meals were OUTSTANDING... Fabulous food, cooked and presented beautifully... Great value for money, @£35/head is not inexpensive but we thought the quality and ambience more than justified the price...

We had a table for 6.30 for 10 people. Took the order. Starters came out everything was fine. Main course was treble. My partner had the chicken and ham pie with chips and veg. The pastry for the pie was so hard it could be eaten, gravy came out cold, a couple of minutes later his veg came out, they were having a laugh, out came half a carrot on a wooden board. I had a burger and chips. The plate came out ice cold, and I mean ice cold, the bun was so cold l thought it had come straight from the fridge. My grandsons had chicken burgers. The buns were burnt so was the chicken. I didn’t ask the others. Desserts. Our friend had Chou with ice cream, same the pastry was rock hard. We asked to be credited with the meals that couldn’t be eaten, which was done. We definitely will not be going back. We were told it was bad, but we thought we would give them a try. My wife and I booked a table at the Stag for a nice meal and as we hadn’t been in a while. The waiter was lovely and friendly and served our drinks. My wife was a little disappointed as the Monkfish was not available, and as she doesn’t eat meat she ordered the twice baked cheese soufflé as a starter and the smoked haddock croquette (on the menu as a starter) as a main, as most other options were meat or cooked in beef fat. Unfortunately the soufflé was cold and quite anaemic and had to be re cooked. I had the scotch egg which was very nice, followed by haddock and chips. The fish was tasty but a little greasy. We had to wait a while for our food. We hadn’t been here since the change in ownership to the Grosvenor Group, and very much like my experience at The Queens Head, this experience was not as we expected. The attention to detail in the cooking should be paramount, unfortunately it seems this has been lost since the change in ownership and management. We have now found another pub in the area we prefer, and not in the Grosvenor group. Sorry.

We had lunch as a family in this beautiful country pub and restaurant. Service was excellent but food was disappointing with small portions and not as expected. The burger was sadly thin and fries portions small. Onion tart was small accompanied with salad dressing. The chicken and ham pie was delicious but small portion of accompanying mash potatoes. Baked Alaska advertised as containing sponge but not in it at all. I had crumble and custard but the custard was served in a tiny jug which was half the size of the jug containing milk for our coffee. Good size crumble which was delicious but the custard was insufficient to even cover the top of the crumble. The thimble size custard jug was too narrow to even scrape the custard out which remained on the sides of the jug. We will return to this friendly pub and hope we have better luck with our food.

Can’t say this for the avocado on toast which was tiny tasteless and expensive all at the same time, in spite of the unusual raw slices of chili served on top. The secret ingredient needed might be salt (plus pepper, olive oil and a better avocado)

Was invited to join friends for lunch at The Stag. Was a bit disappointed they had chosen here as last visit in the summer was average at best. The current winter menu is very fancy, impressive even but perhaps trying too hard and definitely taking the Stag well away from your typical pub grub venues. Each dish from all the courses sounded very busy with lots of tastes and textures. What I chose was not entirely convincing, but actually not that bad, tiny smoked haddock croquettes (grated parmesan dusting a bit redundant) to start followed by chicken breast and 'nduja sausage spread on toasted sourdough (but really drowned in an over spicy tomato and mascarpone sauce) and ending with a dry choux bun with a scant cream filling and crunchy sticky toffee topping that could remove fillings. The wine we had however was very good. Service was pleasant and efficient despite the restaurant being full. The bill was expensive for a lunch.

This pub is in an ideal location, right by the river with a great outdoor area, far from busy roads, it really feels like your part of the natural Surrey countryside. Had I been writing this review 6 months ago I may have given it a 4 stars, however, I would like to be giving 6 stars now. The staff were super friendly, not only to us but our dog from the moment we walked in, everyone was approachable and chatty. They had a nice beer selection and the interior was warm and cozy and very clean, not a spit and sawdust pub at all, but not to swanky either that it felt cold and uninviting, quiet the opposite. It was a quiet and relaxed vibe inside. Having had such a positive experience I will definitely be frequenting here more often, it is amazing how much friendly staff can make a difference, and that is what previously I would have marked them down on. The food is nice, a touch on the expensive side, but like I said it’s more an upmarket pub than a pub pub, if that makes sense. They also had a nice unique selection of crisps, the smoky chilli ones are particularly good.

The staff are very attentive. Whilst the menu is not vast, our meals were well cooked and nicely presented and, despite the place being very busy, we were not rushed. Needs a bigger car park!

I was disappointed after seeing the menu and eating at the Queens Arms a sister restaurant I thought this would be perfect in a gorgeous location but in all honesty view of the river is limited, the cauliflower cheese which is marketed as cheese and truffle with Parmesan crust came out and definitely wasn’t what I’d imagined this would look like, some of the cauli was still hard, no truffle flavour, no crispy crumb, it was a mix of bland white sauce and orange colour which I assume was another cheese. I had the chicken roast which was ok. They offer unlimited yorkshires which seemed attractive but realistically no one eats more than one. But they did look big and homemade and tasted nice. My OH had the beef rump and said his food was good so perhaps it was just mine that was underwhelming but wouldn’t say any of my meal stood out. Staff were very friendly and attentive and I can’t fault their friendliness at all. Overall I just felt disappointed and have had many better roasts in the local area. I used the app to get £10 off which was nice but for me wouldn’t come again or recommend.

A reasonably priced gastro pub with a good but restrained menu. Excellent customer service and hot food served on hot plates. Portion sizes good and food of good quality. Worth a short detour from the A3.

Pretty location, good service but food let it down. Opted for an evening roast and so dissapointed. Food tasted very warmed up, especially the veg and soft roast potatoes and a lump of chicken breast that was added as ran out of roast chicken. Slicing it would have looked better on the plate. In total contrast to the crabcake starter that was fresh and delicious. Such ashame as this was to celebrate/round off our day with a 40th anniversary meal. So it's a 3 star from me and I so wanted to give it more stars.

We had a warm welcome at the bar and the beer Tilford brewery is very good. I wanted to sit next to the river and asked if I could sit down for a quick drink. Yes I was told. I then sat down only for another member of staff to say you cannot sit there... This was 18:00 and the table was booked from 18:45. I said that I would move to another table and would write what I felt in a review if the table was still unoccupied when I left. So from this review you know it was empty... To add insult to injury my wife had sat at another Riverside table that was not booked. So why did the staff member not suggest the other table. So the conclusion of this story is a bad review, because the staff person was over officious and we only had one drink and we will not be returning anytime soon. It's interesting how one member of staff can make such in impact.

We came to The Stag On The River fir my partners birthday. I cannot recommend it enough. From beginning to end everything was perfect. The venue itself, the staff, the food. I couldn’t fault it! The staff in particular would just amazing. When they found out it was my partners birthday the waiter brought out a bottle of Prosecco for us completely free of charge. We came to the area for a weekend away and are about an hour away but we would travel that just to come back to The Stag.

Tagged onto a lunch with my good lady and a friend.Pretty venue, especially in summer by the river. Parking can be a challenge but that’s to be expected in a small location.Seated by Master Abrupt; sadly not very warm and welcoming. Telford Ripper a terrific micro-brewery ale which turned out to be the highlight of the event. Spritzers were spritzers and gunned Coke was Pepsi (small bottles of Coke available).Specifically asked if the Sea Bass special was a decent sized fresh fillet and not an out-of-the-freezer sliver. Abrupt told an untruth. Too much Masterchef Australia shows me the skin side should not be limp and, disappointingly, it was a thin sliver from a fish that would have been so small it should not in all conscience have been landed. I feel certain that the roasted new potatoes had had a close encounter with the deep fat fryer en route to my plate. Broccoli stems overly greasy, Romesco sauce almost certainly from a bottle. c£22 plus service. What?!Ladies had fish and chips which were, well, fish and chips. Others had burgers described by them as below average. That great British culinary contribution - the chip - was nice and crisp apparently.Desserts were ok; not sure how ice cream and sorbet can be otherwise. The sticky toffee was reportedly excellent. Top marks for offering custard with the crumble although no one in our party had it.Conclusion: why not under promise and over deliver? Aspects of the menu looked above average but the kitchen was unable to deliver accordingly (no doubt a management issue not a chef one) so we came away feeling underwhelmed and over charged.

Met friends here as we had not been here for a while. Good food, service wine and beers Nice Rosé wine too! We had the Venison, bacon and mushroom pie and British beef burger with the sourdough bread and Honey and mustard glazed chipolatas to start. All very good with local real ale. Car parking can be a problem but we arrived early and parked easily. Really nice British pub, would recommend

Another lovely evening at the Stag. This pub never fails to deliver (or at least not when I have been there). The service is good and the food lovely. Last night we arrived to a virtually full restaurant and the staff went out of their way to change our table and look after us. Sure - prices seem to have gone up, but understandably really.
