Lovely sunday lunch at the Stag on the River. We had the vegan roast and also the pork roast which were both very nice, albeit a little overpriced for what you get. Parking is also limited so get there early or park round the corner over the Eashing bridge. The staff were friendly and helpful and we requested extra spuds and yorkies which we were provided complimentary with the meal. Would definitely come back for dinner another day. Thank you.

Another stay and the Stag on the River, albeit it after a lengthy gap, with my Mother and daughter. Pleased and relieved it’s as good as before, compact but pleasant rooms with good en-suite, great food and service and decent beer. Nothing not to like in my humble opinion!

We called in unannounced and were found a table for six. It was a squeeze but they fed us well. We were close to the bar and could hear the landlord - who has a very charming and easy way with customers. The food was good, the beer cold and well kept and I am sure we'll be back soon - but will book next time!

My family celebrated a birthday and enjoyed the Friday night steak deal. The food was delicious! Perfectly cooked steak with a really tasty peppercorn sauce, delicious fries and a side order of veg. The ambience was cosy, relaxed yet decadent. The service was spot on! Friendly and efficient which is everything we could hope for. Thank you for a very enjoyable evening!

Had a booking for 5 @7pm on their Friday 'steak night'. We drove 1.5 hours to get there. We ordered x2 of their sharing rib of beef to which they had already sold out of, which is also on their daily a la carte. we then ordered x4 of their rib eye to which the waiter then came back 5 mins later to say they have 3 left. One of us has to settle for the rump and honestly it was one of the worst eating steaks i have ever tried. I did send this in an email but they did not respond so i am posting it publicly.

The location was stunning, we ate on the bank of the river with the gentle sound of flowing water in the background. The service was prompt, friendly and competent. BUT THE FOOD!.. was truly excellent! We shared the 22oz steak and I can honestly say it was one of the best steaks either of us had ever had. Too bad I can't do a review with minus , one star is too much. Food was bad , priced extremely high . Bought the mix lamb grill priced at approx. 25£ and I got a pita bread topped with 2 tiny kofta ( probably one normal split in 2 or 3) , 50g of lamb and 1 sausage ( the type you feed your dog ) everything was so bad , the only good thing was the pita bread . My dog eats better than this .

Off chance lunch. It was a bit busy but managed to get a table, staff friendly and service good, what let it down was portion control gone mad, have to admit to being a club sandwich fan so was delighted to see it on the menu, but this had to be the worst ever, chicken nugget size of well, obviously chicken, and the rest carried the same format, bacon frazzles would be the best description of the ‘bacon’ and brioche bread, doesn’t work at all in my book, advocado nice touch that was good, but sadly now at the bottom of the pile in club sandwiches globally in my view. And the reason for this feedback is I wasn’t asked did I enjoy my meal otherwise this would not be here don’t ask, you get sorry

A reasonably priced gastro pub with a good but restrained menu. Excellent customer service and hot food served on hot plates. Portion sizes good and food of good quality. Worth a short detour from the A3. Update a year later. Food still good but service standards have slipped, 35 minutes from ordering to being served is, in my opinion, not acceptable, especially as there is a 10% service charge. I have now dropped my star rating to three because of this. There is better in the area of an equal quality of food but with better service and no 10% charge.

Have been unable to get our deposit back which doesn’t feel right given the circumstances. Completely understand there are cancellation policies, but we didn’t cancel because we had a better offer… Doesn’t give great vibes about the customer service and therefore future visits, a shame for a local pub.

We had an after-funeral lunch for 16 guests at The Stag on the River. It was great. I chose to have it in part of the outside covered eating area by the river, which is decked out beautifully with a botanical theme and level for easy access. We had a buffet style finger-food lunch with handmade, warm Scotch eggs, sandwiches, cake and various other items, all fresh, delicious, nicely presented and plentiful. The wait staff checked in on us periodically to see if we needed anything. I'm vegetarian, we had a guest with a severe food allergy and two others with strong dislikes. During the planning stages, by phone, we ironed out all those potential wrinkles and the event went perfectly! It's just a shame that auntie couldn't be there; she would've loved it. Thank you all!

Four of us had dinner her on a Saturday night mid-June. The setting is lovely. We found it difficult to park since the carpark is really small for the size of the place. In the end, we parked on a piece of land on the opposite side of the bridge. We ordered mains and puddings. I had the battered haddock. It was really overcooked and not great or even good as a result. I enjoyed the chips that came with it. My husband had the lamb flatbread. He ate it, but it also overdone. It was very small and expensive considering the size of it (£24.95). Our friends had the burger and trout. They said their meals were nice. We had three puddings between us. Mine was the Eton mess choux, which was the highlight of my meal, but once again, it was expensive (£9.50) for a single large choux. My husband liked his sundae. The crumble I'm told was good but came with a very small jug of custard. The staff were friendly and the pub had a nice cosy feeling. I don't think we'll return as ultimately the food was average at best. I also dislike service charges being automatically added to bills. We were not a large group, and that decision should, therefore, be up to us.

We went here for dinner tonight. There were 5 of us and we booked a table by the river. Location is prime but sadly management need to do a complete revamp. The place should be full given the location but based on our experience tonight I can see why. Firstly serving staff are charming but completely under staffed. Service was like a snail and food slow coming out of the kitchen. The Buratta starter comprised of 3 teaspoons of this and some sliced peach and tomato. Portion sizes were very small and the chicken burger comprised of a chicken nugget. This was sent back and then it reappeared with a better size of portion for £18. Staff were visibly stressed and the wine we ordered was not available but we only heard this after waiting 30 minutes. If management are serious they need to address the whole service process. The place should be heaving and we heard another couple complaining. We left without ordering dessert because we knew we’d have to wait another 45 minutes at best. Hygiene wise you need to wipe down communal areas and deliver some customer service training. Hire more staff and have a manager on site to monitor, roll their sleeves up and sort this place out. Full of potential but do not recommend

We visited for my husband’s 50th birthday having booked on a previous visit a specific table as it was a booth and perfect for a family gathering. The table was not reserved and we had to wait for it to be cleared of staff paraphernalia. We sat and after 30 minutes ordered are drinks and food. We then had to request for our drinks after not receiving them for 20 minutes.. After later requesting where our food order was we were informed there was a back log due to the kitchen being without gas earlier. This was the first time we had been told this. Why were we we not informed on arrival? Our food finally arrived 2hrs after our arrival time, when most of our group were past eating. It was a totally disappointing experience on what was supposed to be a special family gathering. We certainly won’t be returning and will be contacting the manager tomorrow.

What a waste of time and money. The food was the most disappointing we have all eaten in ages. The Burrata salad was a smear of burrata with half a tomato quartered, half an underripe peach and 4 stale croutons. The fourth starter didn’t arrive until 2O minutes after ours had been served. Obviously the microwave was busy. The main was an overcooked escalope with half a lettuce with dollops of Caesar dressing. If you wanted anchovies with that you had to pay extra! What a joke. We didn’t hang around to try a dessert. The staff were trying their hardest on a relatively quiet Wednesday night. I can’t imagine what it would be like on a busy sunny weekend!

Don’t bother to eat here until the kitchen repairs are completed. We waited just over two hours for 6 mains and 3 burnt chicken burgers, apparently ran out of cheese so used vegan, ran out of lamb and crab cakes! I feel sorry for the restaurant staff, they did their best, but with two many covers booked , a semi functional kitchen, a new menu (the old was better!) they simply couldn’t cope. This is a classic example of profits over service. ( you should have restricted the bookings and delivered a service that can be maintained) The outcome was angry customers that will take their business elsewhere, and tell of their negative experiences. There is no excuse, you knew the problems and the impact, but made a deliberate choice to carry on and devalue the reputation.

Lovely service and staff very apologetic about food portion sizes and wine by the glass prices - evidently something that’s repeatedly mentioned to them. A fish cake with no additions, other than a sauce and a poached egg £16.95 and to have an added accompaniment, another fiver for salad and £4.00 for a small tin of chips….which would make up a decent main course! Another ‘main course’ of 3 bits of pork belly served with a tiny assortment of beans was great tasting but for £17.00 you’d expect not to be walking away still feeling hungry. £11 for a glass of Rose, really? Small portions with a very hefty price tag including service charge! Won’t be coming back to The Grosvenor franchises. They need to re-think and up their game and perhaps be less greedy on the prices….☹️

Disappointing Portions Overshadowed the Food at The Stag on the River I recently had dinner at The Stag on the River in Godalming, Surrey, and while the food itself was good, the experience was unfortunately overshadowed by the portion sizes and cost. The dishes were undeniably expensive, especially considering how small they were. This applied to both the food and the wine list. To top it off, a service charge was added to the bill unexpectedly, which left a bit of a sour taste. Overall, while the quality of the ingredients seemed good, I can't recommend The Stag on the River unless you're specifically looking for a fine dining experience with small portions and a hefty price tag.

Food only. Really nice location with plenty inside and outside seating. It appears that booking is highly recommended. Food however as well as the service were disappointing at best. 60 minutes wait between starter and the main with waiters passing you by clearly immersed in thinking about being somewhere else. The lack of attention to the client directly impacts the food which in my case most likely spent the best part of the aforementioned 60 minutes under the heating lamp. The seasoning of meat is also very conservative. Lack of salt throughout made me feel more like visiting my cardiologist rather than treating myself to some good food. With sadness, as the location is really stunning, not a place to visit again.

We came back after a good year or so as we love the location of this place but had bad memories of poor service from the last visit… Somehow it was even worse this time! Ordered from the set menu (which they were very reluctant to offer us when we asked, this isn’t a secret menu as it’s on their website) and also ordered a side of bread for the table and was advised we can’t order from the main menu as well as the set menu… it was bread which we had full intention of paying for? Waited an hour for our bread and starters to come out then waited almost another hour for our main courses. The place was quiet being a Wednesday afternoon and staff not rushed off their feet. We were prompted to ask how long the mains would be as had been waiting for so long and they hadn’t even been ordered, if we hadn’t have asked would never have got them. Drinks also very slow to come out, ordered a beer 20+ mins prior to the main coming out anticipating it being slow and despite having to ask 3 times for it the beer still hadn’t arrived by the time the main came. When we politely asked for the OPTIONAL service charge be removed the waitress proceeded to argue with us for a solid 5 minutes as if we were being unreasonable. The steak was the worst cut of meat we have had in years (90% of it was given to our dog) so we had every right to refuse paying for this however only asked for the OPTIONAL service charge to be removed which we think is perfectly fair.

Returning with high hopes and expectations perhaps meant that the shortcoming might have felt exaggerated The food was at best ordinary, looking and tasting as if the menu had been trimmed by an accountant. We started with Bang Bang Cauliflower, nothing to complain about but nothing special either, just a pottery bowl with four small heads of cauliflower in a nice coating. The aged burger was more burnt than aged, looking rather lonely on the plate with a basket of fries and not much in the bun either. The Brick Lane roasted aubergine and vegetable curry was much tastier and filled the bowl, but was not much more than a few potatoes and aubergine pieces with a small grilled half aubergine on top. An error or misunderstanding on our part and a very ordinary glass of wine at £11.50 and beer that seemed not to be in great condition capped off a disappointing meal. Probably better to come back on a sunny lunchtime, sit outside and enjoy the location and hope that the menus have been updated but it will be sometime before we return.

Update April 2nd 1720 Ricardo - thank you for your reply (of sorts) which is totally inadequate....hardly surprising given the farcical way in which you evidently run things. There's nothing else to discuss save you doing the decent thing and refunding the money that I did pay! The experience you gave my family and I was appalling, the experience of that of at least two other families who complained on the day was also appalling. So please, spare me the sanctimonious 'sorry you were frustrated / drop me an email to discuss further bit...!' You left young staff at the front end of your own organisational and leadership shortcomings without any support last Saturday....where was your manager on the day? He avoided me like the plague instead of having the decency to front up....I paid for the food we eventually got...I should have paid nothing! Disgraceful. Saturday 30th March Just the worst service ever! Firstly, top marks to Ella for her personal efforts in dealing with a number of very cross customers this Saturday lunchtime, of which I was one. She was left completely without any support from her manager (maybe managers...) yet still managed a smile. I'd booked lunch at 1pm for my wife, daughter and I, a rare get together as my daughter lives in London. Half hour after ordering 2 x burgers and a minute steak, the manager (yep...know your name but I'll save you from the further embarrassment and won't name you) came to us to say our order had been overlooked and we should have it within ten minutes. Fair enough. Half hour later no food, other people arriving after us getting food. So I went and asked him what was going on, said he'd check, never bothered to come back to me. Eventually my wife's steak and my daughters burger turned up, nothing for me....Had to complain to another manager (I presume as she was dressed differently) who said she'd be back with my burger. Never got it and had to then speak to Ella....a burger turned up, 80 minutes after I'd ordered by which time the moment had passed.....then I got a bill with a service charge...Many unhappy customers at The Stag today....feel very sorry for Ella for having to field all the anger from people. The manager's absence from the frontline when people were complaining was as deliberate as it was shameful. Avoid this place....they'd run out of most things on the very basic 11am-3pm menu, including by the way any mayo to go with the burger...total rubbish. I eventually paid for what I had, had the service charge removed....if the manager had anything about him I'd have not been charged anything. Family time is rare, to be valued....today at The Stag what should have been a lovely family lunch in lovely surroundings was totally ruined in every way... Ella? Get yourself a job where you are supported by someone who appreciates the great job you do, rather than taking your efforts for granted as I witnessed today. Poor.

We booked breakfast at the pub as we have eaten dinner there a few times and have been really impressed. Unfortunately, the breakfast fell short of our expectations. My husband ordered the “full English breakfast” which the menu said included sausages, Portobello mushroom, eggs and black pudding. The breakfast actually only had one sausage, one egg, a tiny slice of mushroom and no black pudding. My husband also said his food was lukewarm. I ordered the Eggs Royale which was very nice, but the “full” English was a real let down and we felt the menu was deceptive.

We booked for Friday lunch inside as The Stag is just off the A3 south of Guildford and on our way home to Petersfield and sounded attractive. Indeed, the appearance, location and first impressions were all positive. Ordering was suitably friendly and efficient. The menu is a cut above a typical pub which is good and can be seen online with prices - good. We had scallops as one starter and were pleased that there were four, well presented. Mains were the chicken and leek pie and fish and chips; the haddock was a noticably generous size and well cooked. But, and for us big buts, the delivery of the food was slow. In particular the mains took an hour and twenty minutes from when we were seated to arrive. We enquired with the waitress and were told that "everyone arrived together". That's odd, as the online booking system allocates slots at each 15 minutes from 12.00 to late afternoon, clearly designed to spread the load on the kitchen and staff. That part of the booking system is clearly not working. The second 'but' is that the dining room is terribly noisy; lots of hard reflective surfaces. Noise abatement technology is well proven and readily available. We don't understand why some venues don't install remedial measures. It would result in a much more pleasurable dining experience! Taken together we opted not to have dessert or coffee!! 10% service charge added to the bill. The important Food Standards Agency Hygiene Rating is a five, the top mark; last review in December 2021. Expected but that's excellent. Toilets were clean, modern and spacious. Adequate parking spaces. It is good to see thet the General Manager responds to TA reviews, very few do systematically. So, overall not as we had expected and we won't be back unfortunately. A pity.

Excellent value room. Tastefully decorated to a high standard with multiple facilities available within the room - has everything you need and nothing you don't, lovely hot shower too. Initially on arriving in the evening, thought you might be able to hear noise from the pub downstairs, but no noise, really well sound-proofed or maybe room is further away from the pub area, then at night when it is very quiet, you can hear the wonderful gentle rushing of the running River Wey! Lovely breakfast too! Highly recommend staying here!

I decided last minute to give it a try with a visiting friend after my son Sunday game: they had no tables till late so we chose to go for dinner time. It turns out that they serve Sunday lunch all day long till 8.00 pm and booked for 7.45 pm. At around 6.00 pm they called saying that it had been an extra busy day so only two selection of the Sunday lunch were left available along the regular menu, they apologized and gave us the option to cancel, but l we decided to still go and kept the reservation for 7.00 pm. When we arrived, we saw the sign, we could not find the parking and entrance that is located at the bottom of a steep lane from the narrow road, so we called in and the manager told us to turn back from our position and offered to meet us at the road and we saw him waving a light to indicate where to turn. They have a parking between the restaurant entrance and some cottages right up the river and we could hear it flowing. The place was packed, all the several tables in the large room were full, it is clearly a favorite in the area for Sunday menu. We ordered the options available and one at la chart that arrived fairly fast in consideration of the number of guests that kept coming in; the waitresses were very nice and helpful with smiles; the manager brought a bunch of treats for our dog; the food was quite good and we enjoyed the whole experience very much, so will be back on a warm day to enjoy lunch outdoor: they definitely know how to keep customers happy also at peak crowded times. Well done!

My wife and myself - together with my brother who now lives in Godalming - had lunch earlier today at the impressive Stag on the River located at Eashing which is a 5-10 minute drive from Godalming. It was our first visit to this impressive property which is indeed on the river and would be a most attractive spot to sit outside when the drier and warmer weather finally arrives. For now, we had booked to have lunch inside (plenty of options but don’t come along on a Sunday without a booking!) and we were promptly shown to a nice table at the far end of the property. Both our food and drinks orders were also promptly taken and - after enjoying French Onion Soup & Scotch Egg starters - all three of our main course Roasts (Chicken, Lamb & Pork - together with a good range of vegetables and a nice thick gravy - with extra Rosst Potatoes & Yorkshire Puddings available if you manage them!) were delicious. As was my Bramble & Custard desert coupled by excellent service throughout our stay. All in all, a most enjoyable Sunday Lunch - one we should plan on repeating when - and if - the British Summer finally arrives!!

This place is great for a cosy meal. It’s a very quaint pub with lovely rooms. The room I had was small but perfect for me and my dog. The room was dog friendly and they provided a dog bed, blanket, water and food bowls, and a treat which my girl greatly appreciated after a long drive! The en suite was good, plenty of toiletries, bath robe and loo roll, only complaint was that the shower only had an above head outlet, bit annoying if you want to keep your hair dry! And also harder to wash effectively for me personally. The bed was comfortable and the duvet and pillows were good quality. The room was warm and had a decent tv, kettle, coffee machine. A fridge is in the hallways with your room name on a shelf and fresh milk provided too. The only thing I didn’t like about the room was the choice of paintings, fox hunting, I do think some things belong in the history books and I’d rather not look at cruelty in action. Other than that the room was lovely. Breakfast was amazing, so tasty and the lady serving couldn’t have done more to accommodate us and my dog. I also had lunch and dinner there too which were both pleasant. The scallops were a bit small but tasty. Overall the facilities and food were lovely and I’d definitely stay again.

I booked a table for tow to celebrate my husbands 75th birthday. Our table was booked for 2.30. We arrived early and let them know. We sat at the bar and had a drink but we could see there was an empty table for two in the window. We were told that it was booked. At 2.30 a couple came in and were shown directly to a table. We asked why we had not been shown the table as we had been waiting for 20minutes. Eventually we were shown a table which was in a very narrow position right at the base of some steps, so every time the staff would have passed we would have run the risk of having something spilt down our necks or being bumped into. We said we did not like the position of the table and asked for some where else. We were told there was no where else even though the table for two in the window was still empty. We left. Very disappointed especially as this was for my husbands birthday which they knew when I booked.

This is the fourth time I’ve stayed here and eaten dinner here. Each time has always been really enjoyable. Staff are always attentive and friendly and the tasty food always presented beautifully. The menu changes seasonally although I’ve noticed some dishes remain , I’d imagine due to their popularity. The stag is always my choice when in the area and I’m looking forward to my next stay already.

Throughly deserves all the positive comments and five stars left by other reviewers... Visited on a Tuesday night, 10 or 12 tables with other guests... The waiting and bar team were quick, very polite and provided excellent individual service to all diners... The menu is small, interesting, with a daily 'specials board' selected from local producers. Our meals were OUTSTANDING... Fabulous food, cooked and presented beautifully... Great value for money, @£35/head is not inexpensive but we thought the quality and ambience more than justified the price...

We live locally and have been regular customers for many years. The current staff are very welcoming however the service was slow, everything we would have chosen from the menu had sold out. So we ended up with a tasteless & dry focaccia (£6.45!) a burger - served on an ice cold plate with an underwhelming salad & a starter sized fish cake main. We won’t be taking up this offer again

From the outside, the pub looks idyllic, even the interior was lovely, staff welcoming and really attentive, however the food is of such low standard it really ruined the meal for us and has put us off returning. We had a simple brunch menu and everything was even burnt to a crisp, unseasoned or stone cold, a real shame!

We had a table for 6.30 for 10 people. Took the order. Starters came out everything was fine. Main course was treble. My partner had the chicken and ham pie with chips and veg. The pastry for the pie was so hard it could be eaten, gravy came out cold, a couple of minutes later his veg came out, they were having a laugh, out came half a carrot on a wooden board. I had a burger and chips. The plate came out ice cold, and I mean ice cold, the bun was so cold l thought it had come straight from the fridge. My grandsons had chicken burgers. The buns were burnt so was the chicken. I didn’t ask the others. Desserts. Our friend had Chou with ice cream, same the pastry was rock hard. We asked to be credited with the meals that couldn’t be eaten, which was done. We definitely will not be going back. We were told it was bad, but we thought we would give them a try. Wish we had gone else were.

My wife and I booked a table at the Stag for a nice meal and as we hadn’t been in a while. The waiter was lovely and friendly and served our drinks. My wife was a little disappointed as the Monkfish was not available, and as she doesn’t eat meat she ordered the twice baked cheese soufflé as a starter and the smoked haddock croquette (on the menu as a starter) as a main, as most other options were meat or cooked in beef fat. Unfortunately the soufflé was cold and quite anaemic and had to be re cooked. I had the scotch egg which was very nice, followed by haddock and chips. The fish was tasty but a little greasy. We had to wait a while for our food. We hadn’t been here since the change in ownership to the Grosvenor Group, and very much like my experience at The Queens Head, this experience was not as we expected. The attention to detail in the cooking should be paramount, unfortunately it seems this has been lost since the change in ownership and management. We have now found another pub in the area we prefer, and not in the Grosvenor group. Sorry.

We had lunch as a family in this beautiful country pub and restaurant. Service was excellent but food was disappointing with small portions and not as expected. The burger was sadly thin and fries portions small. Onion tart was small accompanied with salad dressing. The chicken and ham pie was delicious but small portion of accompanying mash potatoes. Baked Alaska advertised as containing sponge but not in it at all. I had crumble and custard but the custard was served in a tiny jug which was half the size of the jug containing milk for our coffee. Good size crumble which was delicious but the custard was insufficient to even cover the top of the crumble. The thimble size custard jug was too narrow to even scrape the custard out which remained on the sides of the jug. We will return to this friendly pub and hope we have better luck with our food.

Serves the smallest scoop of ice cream I have seen in my life, although the flavour was OK. Perhaps there was no spoon and they only had a thimble. Can’t say this for the avocado on toast which was tiny tasteless and expensive all at the same time, in spite of the unusual raw slices of chili served on top. The secret ingredient needed might be salt (plus pepper, olive oil and a better avocado)

Overpriced and low quality. The avocado sandwich comes on average supermarket bread and costs £11. The layer of avocado was barely a layer. The espresso is made with over roasted coffee and is more like an americano. There was a staff of six for in such a small venue. Paid £32 for two avocado sandwiches, a hot chocolate and an espresso. Joke.

No LONGER a first class lunch at Kinghams. Great service in idyllic surroundings. Hey Jack I shall NOT be making further visits with business colleagues and friends. UPDATE 12 AUGUST 2022. SADLY WE NO LONGER VISIT THIS WONDERFUL RESTAURANT Reason... I would always go for the Steak on the menu but it is not to be found on the menu anymore. My partner suffers a fish allergy so that rules out much for her. My friends say let's go to Kinghams for lunch and we have to say NO. I Used to love lunch there with friends but it's not my sort of dining anymore such a shame that an English Restaurant does not offer a decent steak anymore. And I'm NOT going Veggie. But good luck to you all for some great memories. Sadly the response from the management did not answer my question so have down graded my score.
