Due to a mess up by the Chequers, Fingest, we had to find a table last minute for Sunday roast. The Stag were so accommodating, managing to squeeze us all in. The staff were super helpful, attentive and friendly. Big shouts to Miguel and Ava. The roasts were all great and we had a lovely meal. Thanks!

Comedy of errors! Food was average, I had the venison which was nice, but others had steak which was average. Starters were again average, someone in our party had pea and mint soup and was convinced it had meat stock in it (although meant to be vegetarian), deserts all a disappointment, especially as all were meant to have vanilla ice cream with them but they ran out!! Service - well where do I start, I felt sorry for the staff as I think all of them (bar the manager) were on their first shift and although they were perfectly polite they clearly had no idea what was going on and no direction or sign of a manager. Orders mixed up, repeatedly asking for things that were then forgotten and having to re-ask. Had to ask for the bill 3 times which was then wrong so had to get it redone. Food was expensive and then a 12% service charge on top! Overall would definitely not be in a rush to go back

Lovely dinner on a dark, rainy night. Cosy atmosphere and excellent food and service. The three of us had the burger, fish and chips, and venison pavé, all of which were good. I myself had the venison and thought it was excellent. Prices were reasonable and within local levels. A few drinks by the fire afterwards, and one of our party was looking forward to spending the night. Our dogs were also welcomed. Thank you for taking care of us!

Absolutely wonderful stay. We had a slight problem re our booking ( breakdown in communication) but once the manager Fabio was made aware he couldn’t have been more professional and helpful in resolving the issue. Food drinks and the service was exemplary. All the staff we encountered were wonderful, but a very special mention for our evening waitress Poppy who was just a joy, so helpful and attentive and a great sense of humour. Thank you Fabio and your staff in making our stay very memorable. Hopefully it won’t be too long till we return.

What a beautiful little pub. We came here the day after our wedding for Sunday lunch with the family, and the chap serving us was so friendly and welcoming. Well all I can say is if Will is on, it's top notch service. We were down that way for a week, 1st night we ordered food, it turned, up no cutlery had to ask for that and a napkin still charged the 12% service charge! 2nd night we just went for drinks, same lady on who was not friendly or the guy playing on his computer in the dining area when asked if anywas serving. Suffice to say we only went drinks after that until the last night when Will, Alex and Abi looked after us, polar opposite!

We stayed locally and visited daily for a week. Will, Abby and Alex were very good. Friendly, accommodating and professional. Ava was friendly to locals and James was abrupt and distant. Which probably reflects the mixed reviews. The food was okay as were the beers. The Huntsman manages the rare ability to mix a traditional bar with an excellent restaurant.

We enjoyed a delightful Sunday lunch here, surrounded by the idyllic charm of a beautiful village with fantastic walking trails in every direction. Although we hadn’t booked a table, the gracious Maitre D, Fabio, kindly found us a cozy corner spot, which was ideal as we had our dog with us. My husband and I both ordered the roast pork, and it truly ranked among the finest roast dinners we've ever tasted. The service, ambiance, and food were exceptional, making this a truly memorable experience. We couldn't recommend it more highly!

We stayed in this inn in October 2023 for a few nights - excellent meals, value for money and spotlessly clean. Unfortunately, the inn changed owners and not for the best.. Recently (Oct 2024) stayed for an overnight stop, but were disappointed - evening meal was average and overprized - the fish of our fish supper was definitely not 'artisan' as both our pieces looked exactly the same in shape and size. 12,5% service fee is added the bill so be aware! We found 45 pound for 2 cooked breakfast and a pot of tea a bit overpriced to be honest. Room Chestnuts was so so - bed and bedding were fine, floor could do with a vacuum cleaner especially in the corners and bathroom tiles were a bit grimy in places which could easily be wiped off with some paper, and there was some dust/dirt in the bath as well. Bathroom gets wet after a shower. Very noisy room - could hear our neighbours' conversation and shower sessions through the wall. In the room we stayed in previous (street side) we did not hear anything, so maybe it is just this room. Added value for customers would be to ask how our stay was at checkout ;) Maybe fix some tired decor and be sure rooms are clean. I am aware we did not address the issues to the landlord, so gave them no chance to fix it. However, this is just how they prepared the room for our arrival - i would expect this to be the first basic value you offer for cumstomers.

Our food was delicious… I had the venison cooked with squash and it was utterly amazing. The young staff are lovely but the young man on reception might want to put his phone down for a bit when he interacts with guests. The rooms are very clean and characterful but there is a strobe light effect and a constant fan/hum noise in the room above the kitchens. I think the rooms might need a little guide/welcome booklet or sheet to explain the car park and WiFi and breakfast times but overall it’s a very charming place. It could be magnificent however… very easily.

I had high hopes for this pub given some great experiences at the Hart Street Tavern and the Bottle and Glass Inn. Unfortunately, the service today (while very polite) was exceptionally slow, taking over 1 hour 15 minutes to order, eat and pay the bill for one course. While the food was tasty, the two very small new potatoes and small amount of sprouting broccoli that came with the plaice looked and felt a particularly meagre portion, considering the £25 price tag. And, while the menu available at the time of booking was varied and clearly labelled with allergen information, the menu presented on arrival was significantly reduced and had no allergy markers on the dishes. Front of house staff were very helpful in speaking to the kitchen about allergy requirements, but it does seem an odd move to make your menu less accessible than it was previously.

Went as a family of four and my wife and l were very disappointed with the quality of the food for the price that was charged. The pork belly was mostly fat and was well hidden by the gravy. The vegetables were carrots, swede and cabbage…not that exciting and pretty cheap. For dessert l ordered the crumble which was fine but my wife ordered Affogato. When it arrived we could not believe that half the ice- cream had melted and was so small that l had to ask for a top- up to make it a reasonable size. We arrived at midday and we did not mind that it took ages to be served the two courses. We did not mind the slow service because luckily we had plenty to chat about. We cannot fault the staff for their friendliness.

The food was really nice and tasty, however the service was generally slow and inattentive. We asked for extra bread and it took a while to arrive. We received our roasts which were very tasty, but asked for extra gravy as there was very little on the plate and horseradish but these took so long to arrive most at the table had finished or almost finished. We even got up at one point to seek help and ask where the gravy was. After ordering some puddings, we ended up cancelling and just getting the bill after waiting 15 minutes without any joy. Will have to consider if we return as the overall experience didn't match the quality of the roasts.

It was amazing: a very warm welcome for us all including the dog. Many places are "dog tolerant" but this was most definitely "dog friendly"! The beer was exceptional and the dishes we chose were spot on. The steak was melt in the mouth with plenty of peppercorn sauce. As well as a lovely ambiance, excellent food, what made the occasion stand out was the fantastic friendly service, particularly from Theresa and her colleague( sorry didn't catch her name). It turned out that all three men in the area we were seated in, were celebrating birthdays and they all got sweet treats with candles and singing! If you don’t want people in your restaurant at a certain time. Then make that perfectly clear when they ring to book a table! I rang and booked for 6:30 a few weeks ahead. I rang and confirmed my booking. We arrived on time .Not a single mention of finishing early on a Sunday. No one asked me to bring my sitting forwards . We ordered and were told we couldn’t have pudding as the kitchen would be closed. A great start! not ! First rule of hospitality, You don’t tell someone who has come to spend money on a meal for 6 people that they can’t have something and yet again point out that the chef is going home 🤦‍♀️ The soup was luke warm the rest of the starters ok. A nice gentleman did finally come and take a pre order for pudding so we raced through our courses to pudding . I then asked the table if anyone wanted coffee. Enter stage left the member of staff who had informed me we couldn’t have pudding. To tell me the coffee machine had been turned off. Seriously ? You knew we were booked in. The booking had been made weeks before! You give 2 hours per table to eat Baring that in mind you don’t turn the coffee machine off. In an industry that is crying out for customers to come and eat this was a very poor show. I wish I had spent my money elsewhere.

We usually stick to corporate type hotels when we visit area which we do every six weeks For a change we switched and we were pleasantly surprised. Lovely greeting from the young lady on duty and escorted to our room which was called Chestnut. The room was spotless and very quirky with creaky floors and on a bit of a slope which you expect from a building of this age. The beds was unbelievably comfy and we had a great night sleep. One slight problem was the ceiling height as I am 6ft 4ins which was the exact height for my head to touch it. There is water, tea and coffee and a TV and WiFi. We went down to the gardens and had a lovely drink in the sunshine. The drinks are varied and nicely chilled. The bar staff were very helpful. We skipped dinner as we had already eaten bit wished we had waited and tried the food as it looked very good from what we saw. We had a lovely peaceful sleep . The bathroom shower was powerful and water plentiful although the cold tap was very poor in the sink. Now I've had breakfast is hundreds of hotels and the produce used in the full English was top quality. The bacon and sausage was exceptional. The food was perfectly cooked. The Cesar salad had anchovy dressing but it did not mention on the menu that there were also anchovies in the salad. We waited 45mins for our food and when we complained they said the order hadn't been put thru by the staff. The Ploughman's salad was served on a metal plate that got very hot in the sunshine. Condiments like mayo, ketchup etc were in sealed individual single serving pots that were left outside in the sun under a umbrella.

The pub is in a really beautiful setting so we booked to have lunch on our anniversary. I originally booked for 2.30pm, but following some confusion over last orders our booking was changed to 2pm so we arrived at 1.57pm. The waiting staff were attentive and friendly and I ordered the sea bass and my husband the lamb tagine. There was a bit of a wait but we weren't in any hurry so didn't mind, but when mine arrived I was rather surprised to find a large medallion of frozen (and I mean solid) butter with shrimps in it balanced on the fish; as this was unlikely to melt very quickly I pushed it to one side. The rest of my meal was tasty but there was very little meat in my husband's tagine. We then ordered dessert; my husband asked for apple crumble, and although I didn't really want anything I ordered ice-cream to keep him company; this was just before 3pm. I then visited the ladies, but on my return my husband said that as the chef had gone home he couldn't have any crumble and could only have ice-cream which he declned, so I was left to eat the ice-cream which I hadn't really wanted in the first place, so do make sure you book a table at least 90 minutes before the kitchen closes. On checking the menu when I got home I realised the sea bass should have come with 'brown shrimp butter sauce'; I can only assume the chef forgot to take the pre-prepared frozen sauce out of the freezer in time and just plonked it on my fish at the last minute which seems rather dangerous.

We had the mixed beef and lamb roast. It’s the best. The beer is great. 2 hours free parking in car park. Top gravy. Great staff. The bar is the best. And we saw a spitfire fly over.

Visited last week and didn't enjoy the food. The chips were so deep fried I couldn't put my fork into them. The Mediterranean tart was a pastry case with ratatouille, my salad was coated in a heavy dressing. My husbands steak was fine but his onion rings were overcooked. The tables weren't clean and were sticky. The final insult was the 12.5 % service charge which as far as I can see is not shown on the website. I've decided to post a review as the more I think about it the worse it is and it's now become the bench mark of how bad a meal can get.

Since new management took over the overall ambiance has changed and not for the better. The service seems slower and the staff a lot less cheery. The food also not as it used to be . Doesn't feel like the Kings head that I know so won't be going back
