Visited last week and didn't enjoy the food. The chips were so deep fried I couldn't put my fork into them. The Mediterranean tart was a pastry case with ratatouille, my salad was coated in a heavy dressing. My husbands steak was fine but his onion rings were overcooked. The tables weren't clean and were sticky. The final insult was the 12.5 % service charge which as far as I can see is not shown on the website. I've decided to post a review as the more I think about it the worse it is and it's now become the bench mark of how bad a meal can get.

My husband and myself found this pub a few years ago and loved the pies Took our friends there for lunch. It said lashings of gravy on the menu so we asked for extra gravy and three very small gravy pots arrived with lunch. Pie was excellent and was the mash but overcooked peas wasn’t. The meal definitely need more vegetables. When the bill arrived over £21 for service charge was added. The waitress said we could take off but we felt awkward to ask this, and £1 each for the small gravy pots. These two things really didn’t got down well but we paid the bill. I am hoping the pub reads this and changes their view on charging customers in these ways. We always leave a tip unless the service is really bad

We went as a family of five including a there year old for Sunday Roast. The atmosphere is relaxed and easy, the food amazing! All our dishes were freshly prepared and tasted like it! The beef was the star, it thickly sliced but still pink and soft, with plenty of seasonal vegetables including fluffy roast potatoes. We had desserts and they were of a high standard too. We will be back for sure

Came here early on a Tuesday evening. Staff were very friendly and we ate in the pleasant garden. The food was absolutely amazing, and such good value compared to some other establishments in the area which are rather overpriced. I had the sea bass with seafood paella and lobster cream , which was delicious, and my partner had one of the award winning pies, which as a pie connoisseur he highly rated!

Visited the Pub on a Sunny Sunday afternoon. It’s located in a very pretty village, with a view of the Cobstone Windmill and countryside, which has featured in several films and TV shows. Service was totally chaotic. We waited nearly an hour to be served drinks and food whilst sitting outside in the Garden area. If we return here, it will definitely not be on a Sunday!

Location is beautiful and pub is very quaint. We didn’t have food but looked good and would have liked to come back. Unfortunately the service was confused, slow and unfriendly. Seems to be quite a poorly run establishment. Arrived mid-walk for a pint - can’t go to the bar, have to order at a sort of gate line at the front and then be seated, albeit in some fairly basic ‘bar stools’ in the far right corner of the garden (other tables reserved for diners). Didn’t understand why they don’t just let people who want a drink from the bar go to the bar. Anyway, after waiting 20 mins with no sign of drinks, I headed to get my refund. They also didn’t have two of the main draught beers available. Place felt overran and not very capable.

Been to this pub on several occasions in the past and always opted for the outstanding Fish and Chips which normally is about as good as you could get anywhere however on a recent visit we ordered for three of us and have to say the fish whilst edible was just about the worst we've ever had anywhere that we can recall. The Chips and Mush peas were fine but the fish was bland, much smaller than usual and had very little fish content but worst of all the batter had virtually no crunch to it and tasted as though the oil it was cooked in hadn't been changed for a while. We only finished it because we were famished and I pointed this out to a very nice staff member however her response was that it was extremely busy (which it was) being a Sunday and they were under pressure and that was probably why it wasn't up to the usual standards. For me that not an excuse when paying almost £50 for 3 main meals that are normally top notch and a big part of the reason we travel 40 odd miles to go there! She really should have taken it as constructive feedback and immediately reported it back to the manager to stop it happening again. That would have reassured us that it's a one off mistake which it may well have been. Love this wonderful Pub in stunning location the Beer is excellent and the staff friendly however on this occasion they got it very wrong.Would we go again?Maybe for a drink but not sure we'd risk forking out money on the food anymore which is a great shame as we love to support these kinds of pubs.

The town is wonderful. There are countless walking routes in the area. We had Sunday Roast. A very good thing is that it is not necessary to reserve. You find your table and sit down. Outside it is spacious and you have many tables. As the day was good, it was wonderful. The service, at least for us, was super fast. Very good food. The Lamb Roast is good, but nothing more. On the other hand, the bred and butter pudding is among the best I've ever had. As a not so good thing, the terrace was quite messy, perhaps because they are putting it into operation after the winter. Ashtrays should also be emptied. It gives a regular impression to see the ashtrays overflowing with cigarette butts and the terrace so messy. Having said that, without a doubt this pub is ideal to recharge your batteries. We will recommend it

We had much higher expectations. The kitchen really short, at a specific time they collapsed because 4 couples arrived at the same time. Instead of taking the order they told as to come to the bar after 15 minutes to order, isn’t that amazing? Lack of brain and flexibility. The Sunday roast almost cold. Because it was a beautiful day and it was perfect outside the bar with good beer we survived. The mark 4.4 is too high. The lamb was a little cartilaginous.

Reasonably decent roast. Thought they were a bit tight on the veg (1 small piece of cauliflower for the cauliflower cheese and 3 smallish potatoes), and thought the meat could have been better quality for £20+. Ended up for 4 adults (with only two adult drinks), 2 kids meals (£10 each for a very basic meal), £130. Automatically adding on a service charge too which is a mickey take. Lack of parking around the area and not enough effort to maintain the pub car park meant its a nightmare on a nice day due to the area. Not sure I'd come back anytime soon.

I honestly could not get enough of the lamb and mint pie. I really wanted to order another one, immediately after finishing mine, but felt that the in-laws would look down on me. I've had a fair few pies in my time, having lived in the North West of England (I used to hunt pie shops down), but I can categorically say that this was the best pie I have eaten! Period. I loved the stringy texture of the lamb enriched with delicious mint, and I felt that the shortcrust pasty had the optimum thickness to ensure crunch and absolutely no undercooked middle. Thick gravy and proper chips - would have liked to be offered ketchup to go with my chips, but perhaps they have a "no ketchup with pie policy" - which I rate for record. I'm considering going back tomorrow morning and grabbing one for the road. Would 100% return, recommend, and drive out of my way to have one of these pies.

The day was dark, damp, cold and wet, so typical British winter really. Thank God for the Bull & Butcher which was the highlight of our damp day after a shortened hike through the woods. This is the quintessential old pub with a cheerful landlord, great (real) ale on tap, a log fire, locals with their dog dropping in for a pint, and the Sunday roast was out of the world and the crumble was just crumble-icious. As a long time expat, this met all my nostalgic fantasies of what an old world English pub should really be. Local, but friendly to visitors, lashings of good value food, jaunty staff and excellent beers. What's not to like?

Sunday lunch with my girlfriend and foodie Daughter, having booked on Saturday evening, and being accommodated for lunch the next day was very much appreciated, thank you for that, my Daughters choice of roast would always be lamb and it’s so nice to see it on a menu nowadays and especially here and to be fair it was cooked to perfection as I also had it, the whole meal was cooked the same way, lovely nice choice of fresh vegetables and the best roast potatoes I have ever had outside of home, now that’s how you judge a roast dinner, am I not right readers? the food was outstanding, my girlfriend had the chicken and by the look of her plate, obviously enjoyed it and she doesn’t really like a roast, says it all, if it is cooked with love, it clearly shows on the plate, big thanks to all the kitchen staff 🙏 my only criticism and the reason I didn’t give it a 5 was just down to a couple of younger members of serving staff, smile and look like you enjoy what your doing, even if your not, it doesn’t cost anything, a total opposite to the nice lady that greeted us on arrival, would I recommend it, ABSOLUTELY, will I be back? I wouldn’t go anywhere else in and around here for Sunday lunch.

With John Mortimer in the graveyard and John Thaw pretending to be "Mister Tom" just up the road. It's a specially poignant place for Sunday lunch. The bull HAS been butchered and is roasted every weekend in the traditional English way and served with roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and gravy. A Chiltern speciality that is somehow as universally acceptable as a harvest hymn or a Christmas carol. Forget 'Clinging To The Wreckage' and enjoy the day; whether the weather's clement or blowy, buffeting the Red Kites. Meet a few visitors or locals and enjoy the place as generations before you have done. Rumpole's creator is now at peace in the boneyard with 'Nan' who taught the local girls dressage and whose grave is overgrown with flowers rooted in the rich earth of Turville. You're only a spit away from 'Christmas Common' where Fallow bucks which adorn the hallowed portals of The British Sporting Rifle Club at Bisley. Wilde Fallow herds still graze at will on the pastures outside the village - with the odd Muntjac and Roebuck too. Breathe in and out while you still can - and think great thoughts if you can. Eventually we'll all be laid to rest in the cemetary, beside the greats from the locality.

Once seated we were handed a food menu for Monday -Saturday, I asked if there was a Sunday menu and was told no it's the same by a fed up waitress. Well, I used to go there 20 years ago. It was really great. I came back now and was disappointed. The food was average. Nothing had a particular good taste. The service was also not good.

Very good food, generous portions. Very busy, we had to wait a quite a while for our table to become available and then wait again for our courses. No tea or coffee at the end as it had finished. Staff were great.

Great and only pub location in Turville. Very friendly service. Not fine dining but great location if you are in the area. Parking available.

Due to a mess up by the Chequers, Fingest, we had to find a table last minute for Sunday roast. The Stag were so accommodating, managing to squeeze us all in. The staff were super helpful, attentive and friendly. Big shouts to Miguel and Ava. The roasts were all great and we had a lovely meal. Thanks!

Since new management took over the overall ambiance has changed and not for the better. The service seems slower and the staff a lot less cheery. The food also not as it used to be . Doesn't feel like the Kings head that I know so won't be going back
