We have been here many times for coffee and cake and most of the time the cakes seem to be reasonably fresh. Today i had a very dry sponge Mocha cake. Also, whilst eating my cake i watched a member of staff blow his nose in to a tissue 3 or 4 times and without even a thought to washing his hands went straight over to the dresser to get a cake plate to serve a piece of cake to a customer. I think that is disgusting and shows a lack of hygiene which in this day and age is not acceptable.

We ate breakfast here which was so delicious we returned for a late lunch. The staff could not have been more friendly or accommodating (8 of us) and everyone had a very enjoyable, freshly prepared meal. The menu is small but varied and fresh. They also catered very well for a vegan and vegetarians among us. There is a lovely courtyard to eat or takeaway is possible with lots of places to sit in the grounds - we can’t wait to return when we can sit inside as it looks wonderful. Highly recommend!

It is busy on a Saturday morning when ParkRun finishes 9:30 to 10:30am (which is why I am there) but they do an excellent job of banging out lush coffee, solid breakfast staples (the egg and hash brown sanger is a winner) and their cakes are great. The cafe itself is interesting with booths made from stables, you can see the hoof marks from where horses have kicked, its well worth a visit. The people who work there are super friendly and treat everyone with respect. Highly recommended

We decided to stop off at the cafe for a bite to eat, we read the reviews and decided to stay away from the simple menu, (an egg sandwich) we stuck to the dry cakes and had coffees, the staff truly give you dirty looks as you enter the premises, like we had inturpted them doing nothing and were annoyed they had to do their job? the girl was abrupt and rude and its like customers are seen as an inconvenience. We watched one customer come into the cafe at 3.45 pm and were denied hot drinks as even though they close at 4pm the girl had switched the machine off, Shall not recommend, so much potential wasted the staff and management need changing asap

Went here yesterday day with family and have to say that the staff were standoffish, brusque and miserable; not at all skilled in how to serve with a smile and offer good customer service. Our drinks were brought outside and virtually slung on the table; it was so outrageously bad that we were a little stunned and so we watched them serve others around us only to see it was done in an equally appalling manner. It’s rare to find such surly staff with blatant disregard for the paying customer. Training required (lots of it) and better management needed here I’m afraid!

Had a lovely visit around Mount Egdcumbe House and garden on a beautifully hot day and when finished we were all ready for a nice cup of tea so headed for the Stable Cafe....arrived at five to four, cafe closes at four, and asked the young lady who was re stocking the chiller if we could have two pots of tea....No we couldn't it was cold take away only... But it was, by then, two minutes to four, Where has customer service gone? customers are generally looked upon as a irritation and an inconvenience of the job, we were very disappointed with the customer experience there.

I have been here before, and generally very nice. But this time I asked for: Egg sandwich (they were out) Pulled Pork sandwich (out of pork) Cornish Breakfast (they don't do breakfasts all day) All other sandwiches were full of cheese (not helpful to any vegans/those with allergies/intolerances.) "What do you have?" I asked. "Nothing with chips" they answered. With a massive queue behind me, tutting at my increasing hangriness, and my inability to choose from a menu that isn't available, I gave up and left hungry. When you're a cafe at the top of a whopping great big hill, make sure you have chips at the very least, otherwise people are just going to get annoyed.

We sat here to eat ice creams after having drinks down in the Orangery. The seating outside is on picnic benches, which I’ve never found particularly comfortable, but it was a nice warm day so put up with it. The staff here are not as friendly as the Orangery....just doing their job! The young man serving the ice cream, held the cornet in his hand while putting the ice cream in and then wrapped tissue round it to hand to us, it might have been nicer if he held it with tissue already round it?!? It’s a pleasant courtyard to sit for drinks or food, and there is inside seating.

We visited today and are regular visitors but every time are so frustrated! Regardless of how busy it is there is always a significant wait and I can’t work out why. Food here is good and the cakes are excellent. It all goes wrong with the staff that are not friendly, almost rude and amazingly slow with no passion or real interest in what they are doing and it shows every time we go, hence why I have finally written this review. Location is amazing and menu suitable, but it needs an experienced manager and team to allow this place to reach its potential. To have an hours wait for sandwiches is simply not acceptable. I was waiting in line to be served and watched a bloke who is always there hold an ice cream cone with his hands whilst he filled the cone and then wrap it with a tissue, but so slowly!!! I want to say good things and recommend this place to others but won’t do that until staff change. So much potential wasted

I'm looking forward to many more visits to this lovely cafe. The menu at The Stables is a refreshing change from the fish n chips or chips n fish found in almost all seaside towns. The Stables menu is lovely fresh food with a healthy twist. This being said I had burger, saw it going out to another table and couldn't resist, my wife stuck to her health guns and ordered the rogan josh lentil curry, neither of us were disappointed. We ate at the stables twice whilst on holiday and both times we were impressed. We had lunch one day and returned for breakfast on another. We enjoyed the special for lunch, it was really flavoursome and fresh, followed by a yummy cake. For breakfast I had the vegan full english, which I was intrigued by and was not disappointed, mushrooms stuffed with humous turns out to be delicious! As we were camping with our dogs we were very happy to find it a dog friendly cafe. The staff were very friendly and it had a lovely outdoor seating area with some cute shops surrounding it. We visited here yesterday as the Orangery was shut for a wedding. We waited a while to order as most of the staff were milling around talking to each other, the woman who served me was rude and short. We bought soft drinks which we had to drink from the glass bottles as the glasses we were told to use on the window cill were all dirty and there were dead flies residing in several of them. I ordered a chicken salad which was the only gluten free option on the menu, it arrived with 10 teeny pieces of rubbery chicken, and plenty of mouldy lettuce. Unfortunately I had eaten some of it when I noticed the mouldy lettuce. We couldn’t find anyone to tell as there were no staff to be seen then despite the huge piles of dirty crockery on plenty of tables. The quiche my husband had was fine although the chips weren’t great, but definitely not mouldy. I would definitely avoid this place in future and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

This is a pleasant enough cafe serving decent food and drinks at a reasonable price. However, someone is not doing their job...when you order you are asked what table number - they all have teapots or something numbered....but without fail, the waiters and waitresses emerged from the kitchen and then wandered from table to table asking if this is what they ordered. If you have a system - use it!

Watery insipid coffee, cold chips, patronising waitress, thought we were in a sitcom. All could have been forgiven had it been handled politely but when the waitress seems to think you are her annoying 10 year old and that nothing can be their fault and asks you, 'satisfied now?' you have to wonder if she has heard of the words customer service. Even the merest hint of an apology would have been enough but a self-righteous, bully whose idea of dealing with a dissatisfied customer is to challenge them, 'what do you want me to do about it?' needs remedial training and fast.

Loads of staff stood listening to the orders but not doing much, customers told they can't sit outside if they've ordered food, they have to wait inside and take it out themselves. Had the vegetable burger for myself and my daughter. At nearly £10 a plate I thought it was a tad on the pricey side, and I my expectations were high, and.... it was presented beautifully by attentive staff and it was really good. Also, you can have a jug of water at no extra cost, which I always think is a good sign of a quality eating place. The veg burger of the potato and vegetable kind was crispy and topped with lettuce and tomatoes all encased in a lovely and light brioche bun. The onion rings were slipped onto the skewer that when right through the burger; a nice presentational touch. The accompanying chutney, coleslaw and chips were just right and it all came on a wooden board. Very, very good vegetarian food. Thankyou Stables.

Lovely location housed in the old stables at Mt Edgecome House. This is a great place for a cuppa and a snack but the "Special" I had today was very sad. I was hungry so I ate most of it, but on another day I probably would have sent the sausage casserole back. This may have been just a one-off bad day for the "Specials", or it may be signs of an endemic problem. I will return and give them another go, but there really is no excuse for serving up such bland mushy food.

Toddled over for lunch today at the stables. It is a pleasant spot & staff are hospitable but the lunch was a real disappointment. We both had soup (one carrot & coriander the other parsnip and orange). The amount was generous but flavour insipid . The associated roll and packs of butter had been 'microwaved', together? As a result the roll was warm on the outside and cold in the centre while the butter ran from the foil and was essentially a liquid. As I had paid, I finished mine, but my friend gave up. Would have preferred better quality smaller amount.

My parents took our 3 daughters (7,4&1) for 'lunch' on a Saturday on our recommendation. They were appalled. The staff were confused and at times rude. My dad's pasty was dry and looked reheated several times over and 'warmed up chips'. The waiter did not know what my mum's meal was (a tuna salad) - and later this was charged at the price that 'the computer says' and not as advertised on the board. My daughter's 'children's' cheese sandwich was an obscene wedge of bread a giant would have struggled to eat. My other daughter's cheesy chips were at best cold scratching a with cheese topping. To top everything off the baby found a live twin mains socket in the small if her sister's back when seated on the dining bench and when it was highlighted how dangerous this was the waitress just shrugged. My parents were very disappointed and found the whole experience upsetting. My dad says it needs shutting down and could be a lovely venue under new management. I will no longer recommend this venue to friends, visitors and family. Stay away - awful!

You have to pay to get into the House/Earls Garden but once in and done that you have access to some extras which include this good cafe/restaurant in the stable block which is open from 10.30 till 4.30 on Friday Saturday and Sunday. The food is good and tasty. Not cheap but fair value and I liked it. Although the cafe in the Orangery down at the Italian Garden has some novelty appeal and in the right conditions the view of that garden makes that more basic set up a nice enough place to get an ice cream tea coffee or light snack I think that if you are out here in the Country Park and have not bought a picnic then the Stables is the best bet. I have never been impressed by the food at the pub, even when after a change of owners a few years ago they promised it would be better, I dont like it.

Festive Afternoon Tea this afternoon was very disappointing. It is clearly a stop gap to keep income trickling in between Sunday lunch and evening dinner service. The biggest issue is with the service, very inattentive, unconcerned staff not in the slightest bit interested in providing a professional level of attention. The afternoon tea was acceptable but not exactly delightful let alone memorable or to be recommend to others. Delightful setting with the hotel beautifully appointed and well decorated for Christmas, just a pity the staff were not switched on at all. Management at fault and it would appear no investment made in staff training.

For a spot of lunch, my wife and two children decided to eat here. Never again. We settled on the beef style kebabs (on a skewer). With rice. The beef was tough, tastless, rough and badly cooked. I was a butcher, I should know! Rice was microwaved but still undercooked! The salad that came with it was soggy, rotten and floppy. The best part of the meal was the kids fish goujons. We spent 70 quid (including drinks) on some of the worst food I've eaten.
