A venue with a great atmosphere, and serving good quality food. However, we were booked in advance in a large group, yet there seemed to be a shortage of staff, therefore the service was poor, albeit nice and friendly.

The Meadery is set in great surroundings and we have often visited it in the past. It was disappointing so we stopped going a couple of years ago but thought that we would give it another go whilst in the area again this year. Thankfully we did - it has improved hugely and we all had a very enjoyable meal.Menu choice is very good and allows all of us to have something that we like. The delivery is now on plates rather than the baskets of old, and for us this is a big improvement since the main part of your meal is not served whilst on top of the salad. The portions are very good and unusually for my family we were unable to fit in any desert! If there is any slightly negative comment to be made it would have to be about the state of the ale when it arrived at our table - the pints of Tribute that we ordered looked slightly tired and they had lost their head by the time we were served them. The staff were very pleasant and had us sitting down very quickly after arrival that this seemed a minor and trivial issue so we didn't comment - it certainly didn't detract from the experience either.Much improved and we all enjoyed the visit.

We have been coming to Saint Agnes for many years. We normally eat here the Sunday after the carnival, on occasion there have been up to 30 of us. It is always an enjoyable experience as they cater for every need. Children's menu and smaller portions from the main menus for those with small appetites. All their food is cooked from fresh & there is a sign saying to be patient, when you are in good company you don't even notice this. This year I had the tempura prawns for starter which the batter was light & the prawns were very meaty accompanied but a nice sweet chilli dip. Others in the party had the shared starter which looked massive & plenty for more than two to have shared comfortably. For our main course traditionally we have chicken in the rough which was lovely as always if not a little naughty. Nice crisp chicken skin with some nice chunky chips (much better than skinny fries which you get in most places)The team & management are always friendly & happy to help even if it is just to ensure the mead wine jugs remain full. We went again a couple of days later as a smaller group as we cannot resist the food & love the medieval theme!! We shall be back next year & many years after that....we hope.Thank you Saint Agnes Meadery for looking after us for many years so far.

We are locals and frequent 'The Meadery' in Newlyn which has never ever let us down (please see great Trip Advisor reviews) and I would encourage anyone researching the site to avoid this meadery. I can't fault the service - our waitress Beth was attentive and given our large group, didn't let us down on that front. The food is so poor. The quality was nothing compared to Newlyn Meadery. The chicken in the rough was awful. Meat was grey and over cooked, with a fishy aftertaste and a strange crispy coating. My mums prawn cocktail contained ice crystals and it was altogether a very expensive disaster. Thankfully as a group we enjoyed ourselves but the food is a shambles. Our friends daughter had a burger that had been cooked to the point of no return, badly singed and dry - inedible. Having worked in hospitality management for 20 years I find it really sad that this type of food is being served by a 'chef' who thinks it's acceptable to do so! My opinion, get rid of the 'chef'! I also note that other poor reviews have been awfully defended by the management... So I eagerly await mine! We won't be back.

As a family we have visited this Meadery for many years, we live llocally. We had children with us so booked early 6pm, starters came at 6.40 but only 3 people were eating them. We were first there, we were not told of long waits, we were not asked if we were OK, we were not asked if we wanted a drink. We sat there for over an hour with empty glasses. No one at the bar to be able to get one ourselves. Just about to leave at 7.50 when our food arrived. We were afraid to ask for drinks as this would have been another hour probably. Ate and left, no deserts bought, may have been another £50.00+ worth of food and drinks bought if any service was provided. When leaving the waitress/manager? appeared very quickly (shame this didn't happen sooner) she was very rude when I complained and aggressive in her attitude. We will never go back and we will be telling everyone we know how bad it was.

Stopped here on the way back from a night away, knowing what the Cornish Meaderies have traditionally produced (famous for fried half chicken with chips on wooden platters to be eaten with your hands served by "wenches" in a great atmosphere). My wife and daughter weren't too worried about having a starter but having been driving for some time, I fancied one. We noticed however that there was a sharing platter and on the basis that it was only a couple of pounds more than a starter for one, decided we'd all share it.When it came however it should have been accompanied by a health warning! It included breaded mushrooms and garlic mayo, spicy wedges, scampi, onion rings, fish fries, tortillas!! We ate it but to be honest it was so big (I would say the equivalent of four full size starters at least) it ruined our main courses for us. We couldn't then do them justice and my daughter was upset she couldn't manage the Chocolate Nut Sundae she had been looking forward to.Think next time I may just have a sharing platter for myself and nothing else!

We decided to try the meadery as it had been recommended to us by some friends who visited a few months ago, mainly as it was a place that serves mead!! It was the last night of our honeymoon and it was a perfect way to end it. The building is old with beams throughout with a lovely ambience. The staff were incredibly friendly and the food was fairly quick to arrive, quicker than I expected, they do state that it is NOT fast food so don't expect it super fast when busy. I had the lamb shank which was very tender and the red wine and rosemary gravy that it was in was just beautiful! My husband had the mixed grill, again the meat was beautifully tender, he polished off the lot! The portions were very generous too, no hungry tums leftover! Absolutely the best meal we have had in a long time and on our holiday. We will definately be visiting again on our next visit to St Agnes.

Great cream/ice cream desserts, good atmosphere, friendly staff, highly recommended.

We eat here last night as a party of 3. Our greeting was nice and friendly and we were told to pick a table. Service started off great, drinks arrived promptly and an order was taken. We had the sharer for the starter which is a mix of things. Everything on the plate was very over cooked, crispy and dry. No one came back to see if it was ok. No napkins or cutlery were given to us and we ended up having very greasy hands. We didn't even get plates to put our food on. Two of us had fish fries and chips, these were ok, however no where near as good as Newlyn. The other main dish was chicken in the rough, however it should have been chicken in the bin. Again over cooked and dry, however the skin was very soggy making us think it could have been under the heat lamps for a while. During our meal no one came over to see of the food was ok, or to see if we would like any drinks. There were only a few other tables in, so there was no excuse for the bad service. We had been informed that they were run by the same people as Newlyn and Redruth, if they are they really need to find out where everything is going so wrong! Most of the things on the menu are not in line with a traditional meadery. We won't be returning!

We have been going to this meadery for many years, although staff and ambiance have been good, in the past, the food has been just ok, but as time has progressed it had started to lag behind more modern newer restaurants and pubs in Cornwall. However along with the recent (feb 2015?) overhaul to the choice on the menu (now much larger), there has been a change in the quality and presentation of the food. The chips are chunkier and crispier the salads are more varied and interesting. There is now a burger menu along with other dishes previously not previously on the old menu. The desserts have also changed - the Grasshopper and chocolate pies taste as though more chocolate has been used and are less mousse based. The staff and service remain good. Portions are generous still and burgers are massive. Prices remain similar to before - on a par with the top end of the pub food prices.(c£8 to £14 for a main course). There is also a children's 3 course menu for £6.95 and a 30% reduction for smaller portion meals. Overall the menu and food have improved recently and will be going back again soon. There is also a good vegetarian choice on the menu.

Always been a fan of the meadery but first time experiences at this hidden away place in St Agnes. We were staying locally for the week during half term and after having a lovely meal on night one with a friend ended up going twice more during the week as we found it better then going anywhere else. The restaurant we were told has broken away from the main meadery chain lower down in Cornwall but has retained much of its orginal menu with some extra choices, still does all the mead wine as well! All 3 nights the food was piping hot, plenty of it and very quick to arrive! The only grumble I had, due to being a long term user and lover of the meadery, was that it appears this meadery has changed their death by choclate dessert which appears more like cake now then the dessert that they use to serve in a meadery further down the coast! But I am being really picky! Haha! Great time had by all of us, we will be back!

We went to The Meadery recently as a large family group, and we thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Great food (their renowned 'Chicken in the Rough' was delicious); well-presented with good portion sizes; a good selection on the menu; and the prices seemed fair. It was a nice atmosphere - very quiet and relaxed; we were given a table upstairs due to our party size, and, it being a quiet Thursday evening, we had the whole upstairs floor to ourselves. Our waitress for the evening was lovely - very friendly and attentive. Fantastic - I would recommended a meal at The Meadery.

The food was well cooked and delivered lightening fast as ever. The menu is far more extensive than in the past and we have no complaints about our choices (chicken, tempura prawns, veggie and ribs). We were staying in St Agnes on Holiday and I really wanted to come back to the Meadery while we were here. I previously visited years ago and I remember how nice that the ribs and the mead were. This was my husbands first visit. We were certainly not disappointed. The food was so delicious and reasonably priced, the portions were huge and the service was excellent to. The medieval theme is fun. Some may think it to be a little tacky or touristy but we liked the quirkiness and ambiance of the place. This is a great themed restaurant for families. Kids will love it.I had the smoked salmon for starter, Chinese style duck for main and the caramel apple pie for dessert. It was all so tasty, well presented and huge. Wow the amount of smoked salmon was quite incredible. The duck was so succulent and the glaze on it was sooo delicious. The chips were the most tasty I think I have ever had in my life. My husband had the scampi for main. He enjoyed it so much and we have never seen such a generous portion of scampi. The hearty food seemed to be very fresh and much of it homemade, The mead and fruit wine was very enjoyable to. The food came quickly and the staff were friendly and helpful. We visited early evening on Sunday. We would have visited again but in the winter months they open Thursday to Sunday only and on some school holidays. We have been to St Agnes Meadery many times over the past 20 years. We decided to take our children as they have never been. We were not expecting 5* food as it is more for the atmosphere and "good grub". We read some reviews on here before going and were a bit dubious, however the staff were very friendly and provided a good attentive service despite there being only the 2 waitresses, they worked hard. The food was very very generous even the adults struggled to eat a reduced sized portion, so the children had a massive amount of food. You could easily share a childs portion between 2 children. I had the tempura king prawns and they were excellent. We also ordered death by chocolate for pudding which was also HUGE! All in all not a disappointment at all and the kids loved it especially as they didnt have to use a knife and fork.

My family have been going to the meadry for 30+ years and we keep on going because it's where we all went and loved it as kids. However since the change we have not enjoyed it as we once did. The breaded mushrooms are rubbish compared to what they were. The chips don't seems as nice. I can understand why they want to introduced new things to the menu which is great but they just changed the good bits too. We ordered a small portion for my nephew and it was huge. It looked like the same size as a adults. We asked and they said it was 30% smaller but it was just off putting for a small child. The kids pasta came in a bowl which was too hot for them and we had to be moved to another bowl. I could understand it being hot if it was an adults meal but not a childs. I hope the new owners reflect on these reviews as after 30 years of going there we really were thinking about going somewhere else. Such a shame. P.s the staff are still nice.

Been going to St Agnes Meadery for more than 20 years and tonight was the worst meal I have ever had. I had read some reviews on here and thought I would give them the benefit of the doubt, won't be doing that again in a hurry. My 4 year old had pasta bake that was piping hot and had no pasta in! Why a kids meal needs to be hotter than everyone else's I don't know. They did replace it, with another bowl of boiling hot food, we had nearly finished by the time it was cool enough to eat. My niece had sausage and chips and the sausage was red in the middle, to be fair, we complained and they didn't charge us. My husbands sirloin steak was meant to be rare but was at least medium and dry as a bone. Me and my Dad had fish fries which were chewy. The staff were apologetic and the food didn't take long to come but was disappointing when it did. I used to have very fond memories of this place and now, I won't be returning until I see some better reviews on here.

We used this restaurant regularly when owned by the previous owners but on our last visit waited over an hour for our starters - another hour for the main course, missed meeting our friends for the evening due to the length of time we needed to spend waiting for our food to arrive. When it did it was dreadful nothing like we were used to.I wrote to the proprietor both at The Meadery and also at the Rosemundy House Hotel in St Agnes as they own both establishments and have not even had the courtesy of an acknowledgement, an apology or a reply. We now go to The Meadery at Redruth 100% better - better food, quicker service better value. Have visited this meadery a lot over the years and never had any problem. However, the last visit was awful. Had deep fried mushrooms for starters and they were like rocks. Had the burger for mains, dripping in grease and the chips were cold and overcooked. The pudding was apple pie which I assumed would be hot and delicious, it was a piece of cake with apple and a caramel topping, disgusting. The waitresses were rude and had a terrible attitude, needless to say no tip was left. We, as a group, spent over £200 at this place, definitely not worth that money. Disappointed not a strong enough word ! Went with friends looking forward to the usual meadery feast. Starters were sub standard, garlic mushrooms were that overcooked they were black ! My husband complained and the manageress stated it was because they were homemade with brown breadcrumbs ! My husband who is a qualified chef pointed out the reason was that they were over cooked. We were brought another portion which was a lighter colour but disappointingly small and not like the traditional ones which were succulent. The chicken was dry and definitely not crispy, the chips dry and overdone, the salad bland and the coleslaw unappetising. My friend had a goats cheese tart which was a square of puff pastry! Not the traditional delicate shortcrust case. My husband and our friend complained only to get a 15 pence reduction from an over 80 pound bill ! The manageress seemed disinterested and even implied it was our palate that was the issue! I have to say I'm local and the meadery is unique to cornwall but St agnes is one I wouldn't recommend to anyone ! Will never go back even if it was the only place left to eat would rather starve !

Next was the main course, there was 6 of us in total, and one of our party didn't receive his meal until 15 minutes after the rest of us. He was given a free coke for the mistake! The surroundings are cheerful and what you expect from a meadery, if you are looking for fine dining a meadery is not the place for you. Will definitely be returning. My one constructive comment would be when there is table availability spread your customers, unless really busy it is nice not to feel on top of your fellow diners.

Walking in , being shown straight away to a table , getting the drinks orders done and the service was excellent and hasn't changed a bit .Sadly the reason we go to the meadery is for the food , my particulate favourite was the Tempura prawns , chips and salad ,but sadly this is where it all went horribly wrong , now being honest the food was ok and cooked well but sadly not a patch on what it use to be , none of m old favourite was the same , not even the chips or even the salad . The food was overpriced in my opinion for the quality of it . Sadly for me this was end of an era , My old favourite and a place we returned to for birthdays and special occasions for many many past years is no longer . We will not be returning .I will say it again , the staff and service is still at its best .

The food came out within 5 minutes & tasted like cardboard. Why cant they cook fresh local produce from local shops instead of cheap frozen food. They will lose all local customers if this rubbish continues!

Been going to this restaurant for over twenty years and will not be returning. The menu has been extended, but the food quality has been vastly damaged. The food was terrible...

We have often gone to the meadery as a treat and really enjoyed it. But i regret to say we will not be going again any time soon. We ordered the food and drinks; the food appeared immediately ...before even the drinks. Nothing tasted fresh or cooked to order . It tasted like it had been sitting on a hot plate for hours. The chips were barely edible. The menu is larger but the quality i fear has really suffered.

We were a little concerned when the place was sold that vast changes would be afoot and my 16 year old would be very disappointed if the Ribs changed... very particular to Ribs and the Meadery ribs in particular!Staff always friendly, shame it doesn't open more often in the winter - we would have gone on another night if it had been open.Liked the additions to the menu - burgers and steaks - great additions. 4 of us this time and none of us were disappointed. Portions still v.large!Would go again - and will next time we are in St. Agnes.

Have been visiting The Meadery for nearly 30 years and have never had an issue. Food has always been fantastic, staff always made us welcome and prices reasonable. However we visited tonight and food standards have definitely changed and not for the better. Apparently ownership changed 3 months ago. Let's hope they get up to speed before they loose too many regulars. Just like to add that they still have the same excellent staff.

Not been to a Meadery for a while and was pleasantly surprised by the different options and variety of meals on the menu. Staff are friendly and food was lovely. Love the mead too! :-)

Had a lovely meal at the Meadery on Friday evening excellent scampi, lovely sized portion (too much for me should have had the small). Steak was well cooked and juicy husband soon demolished that. Staff helpful and friendly. New owners have added a few things to the menu. Ambience is still great. Understand that a carvery operates on Sunday lunchtimes - can't wait to try that.

Excellent staff, excellent food and a very nice atmosphere. Yes things have changed a little but I've been going here for many years and will happily continue to do so. Still a very enjoyable place to go for some decent food and friendly staff.

Totally enjoyed the food here tonight. I had a steak off the specials board and wasn't disappointed one bit. My other half had the chicken which was lovely and juicy and not dried out at all. The homemade coleslaw was to die for and wish I had asked for an extra portion of it, I will next time. The staff were all great, with fantastic atmosphere, will be back for more that's for sure. Seeing as my other half is a big kid at heart I asked for a lolly pop for him, which I got although I must admit I did put extra money in the staff tip box for it. Thank you for a fantastic night and fantastic food. Will be back for more very soon.

After hearing negative feedback from people about this place since it's changed ownership we decided to go on Saturday 12th to see for ourselves. Being regulars that go 2 - 3 times a month we were concerned. We'd been told that the fish fries and crispy chicken were no longer available. This simply isn't true! We had both....not such a heavy coating of flour on the chicken but it was extremely moist and not dry at all....which we have had on a couple of occasions in the past. The salad has changed slightly but we felt for the better. It now has a dressing....which can be left off if you'd rather and the coleslaw is in a separate pot. This was handmade as before just not quite as chunky. The old staff are still working there, all of whom make you feel more than welcome as always. Us Cornish don't like change but my family and I are grateful it is still open for business and not been re-developed into flats or houses. Long may it continue. Well done to the new owners and the old staff. As for a few additions to the menu.....I think it's been a long time coming!! People can have more choice and as for the regular meadery goers the old style food is still available.

Having heard that 'our' restaurant was being taken over by new owners we were a little concerned for its future. Then having seen a couple of the reviews on this website we were even more concerned. But open minded & hungry we headed out to St.Agnes to see for ourselves if our worse fears had been realised. What can I say? The new owners have taken an old favourite & made it better....!!!! The old style Meadery food is still on the menu (complete with salad garnish & definitely homemade coleslaw) but there are also lots of new additions in the way of specials for people to choose from. Only the chef appears to have changed & the food is still of the same great quality & portion size. Crispy chicken & fish fries are still there but accompanied by lamb shank & steaks. How to make a great place even better..... Would recommend this to anybody who fancies a good night out without breaking the bank, in a friendly & relaxed atmosphere.Perhaps there were one or two teething problems in the initial couple of weeks handover. But these all seem to have been ironed out by some truly professional front of house staff.

This place was always the location for family and friends get-togethers, as regulars and locals we went there a lot in the winter and would often spend in excess of £100. We went on September1st where we were told that soon the place would be under new management. We expressed that we hoped to return next time and things would still be the same.We went on Saturday 5th oct. I would say every table complained, even when we went to leave, people were queuing up to complain and refusing to pay. The staff dealt with it well, they sympathised with our frustration. However, there was no manager present for us to talk to. Starters took 40 mins, mains took 30mins, we didn’t stay for dessert.Potions have reduced in size, no more salad garnishes, coleslaw no longer home made. Our table was very disappointed and we are gutted that our favourite place to dine has ended up like this. We hope the new management will read these reviews and perhaps listen to the staff and customer views and put things back how they were.

Our old favourite has been taken over. We have been regulars on a monthly basis , have had many birthdays there, when our friends come from up country they always wanted to go there. We have just been there for a celebration tonight. We will not go there again. No crispy chicken, no crispy fish pieces. Undercooked chips. The mead was not the same. I felt sorry for the staff who tried to make our evening pleasant. They were their usual attentive and helpful but they had a difficult job. I don't think we were the only ones who were disappointed. There were many empty places which is most unusual.

Typical meadery food, plenty of it and very tasty. You don't go to a meadery for fine dining but you do go for fresh food, quickly cooked and served and a warm, relaxed atmosphere. It does what it says on the tin!

Yes huge, but poor quality and tastless. The food portions were massive and the menu for main course was the same as the starters just bigger. It is probably the worst we've ever eaten in many a year. Most of the food from our party of four was returned barely toched.

Went on a Bank Holiday evening. Did not book & spare tables. Sat in hard, booth-like tables made from pews from old church. Food excellent & large quantities. Good value for money. Very dark inside - no windows. Would be nice to have adult only section away from noisy children.

We had a birthday meal at the meadery and although we didn't book we managed to get a table for 8 people. We had 3 courses and we didn't have to wait too long between each course. If you don't have a big appetite you can ask for a smaller portion which is cheaper. Also if you don't manage to finish your mead they will put it in a bottle for you to take it home.

The Meadery at St Agnes was recommended by a friend and having been to similar restaurants, i.e. Newquay Meadery, I was expecting something good. The reality was something different. Having arrived just after opening time at 6pm we received a warm welcome. It has the standard Meadery theme, pictures of knights, shields on the wall and the olde world feel. The menu was very average with not a great deal to choose from and surprisingly no steak on the menu. When the food arrived it was very average the type of food you would expect in a roadside cafe. The service we recieved was not brilliant although all the staff were polite. The only good thing was the price probably a good place to eat if you got lots of little mouths to feed, but don't go there if you want something special.

For a spot of lunch, my wife and two children decided to eat here. Never again. We settled on the beef style kebabs (on a skewer). With rice. The beef was tough, tastless, rough and badly cooked. I was a butcher, I should know! Rice was microwaved but still undercooked! The salad that came with it was soggy, rotten and floppy. The best part of the meal was the kids fish goujons. We spent 70 quid (including drinks) on some of the worst food I've eaten.

We used to love popping in here when we were in Truro, you would be lucky to get a seat but now it’s take your pick. In a nutshell the place has lost its soul.

Festive Afternoon Tea this afternoon was very disappointing. It is clearly a stop gap to keep income trickling in between Sunday lunch and evening dinner service. The biggest issue is with the service, very inattentive, unconcerned staff not in the slightest bit interested in providing a professional level of attention. The afternoon tea was acceptable but not exactly delightful let alone memorable or to be recommend to others. Delightful setting with the hotel beautifully appointed and well decorated for Christmas, just a pity the staff were not switched on at all. Management at fault and it would appear no investment made in staff training.

We visited several times over our week in town. This place has amazing food and despite some of the reviews saying otherwise we found the service friendly and efficient. Everything is cooked fresh to order so there is going to be a wait during busy times. I had the poached eggs and avocado on granary ( several times) an amazing goats cheese salad , waffles and coffee that were both delicious. We also called for drinks too and love the fact you can watch the world go by as you sit outside. We will be back next time we are in Cornwall .
