We used to love popping in here when we were in Truro, you would be lucky to get a seat but now it’s take your pick. In a nutshell the place has lost its soul.

we remembered this pub from a few years ago when it was difficult to get a seat for one of the very good meals they served. Called last week and the place was deserted and the poor barman looked bored to tears. Sat outside, alone, on the benches in the market square opposite the 'We are Open' sign - very necessary to advertise the fact. Even the frontage looks decrepit. What a shame

Had a short stay in Truro and popped in here on Friday evening. We were lucky to get the last table as many people were getting turned away. The salt beef roll was divine and came with a delicious mustard sauce. It was so nice we tried to get in again on the Saturday but it was always too busy. We will definitely be back for another after Christmas. Please don't take it off the menu!!

Tucked away between towering building stands the small understated Market inn. From the outside looking in a lick of fresh paint could help but much to our surprise the menu looked rather interesting. The service was lovely and safe which was great. The food was fresh and homemade which makes a huge change these days. The squid was well cooked and very tasty, The salt beef was served with hand cut chips abs served in a soft roll. The prices were not over inflated and the portions were good. The waitress was on it and knew her menu and drinks. You must try this place and support local providers

We came in here without booking and was pleasantly surprised. The food was so delicious and you can tell it's all cooked fresh! Portion sizes were really big and I couldn't fault any of the 4 meals my family ordered. The kids pasta was super yummy and much better than the microwaved ones most chain restaurants serve to you. Staff were very attentive and happy to welcome us. Highly recommend!

It was a busy evening and they coped amazingly well considering they were dealing with the Eat Out to Help Out scheme, social distancing and locals and visitors alike. We always pop in here either for a Americano coffee and/or lunch. We love that dogs are allowed on short leads. We normally order a blue cheese burger with skinny chips (chunky chips on menu and the chef is very accommodating) and every time we haven't been disappointed. 11/10. The staff are always so friendly. The only thing which lets this place down is the decor and inadequate heating...otherwise this place has potential next to the newly revamped Hall for Cornwall.

We always pop in for a drink when in Truro, but on this occasion wanted a light lunch. We shared the fish platter, wow it is exactly what the menu says, but delivers more in both quantity and quality. Curried squid was tender and flavoursome, moist tasty prawns were in a light tempura and crispy whitebait. The smoked salmon and cream cheese was lovely with the ciabatta and all accompanied by two big pots of tartare and lemon mayo as well as a generous salad. Next time we grill have the burger, they look amazing and got a good review from the people sitting opposite us.

Happened just to stumble upon this little gem when visiting Truro for the day. Great selection of food available. Myself partner and toddler aged 3 had lunch here. Warm welcome from the staff. We opted for child fish and chips, cajun chicken burger (amazing) and the pulled pork bap. The food was absolutely delicious, well presented and just great value for money. Our son loved the child portion fish. It was actual fish, not the rubbish frozen stuff you often find pubs.Definitely return if in the area. Delicious.

Popped in with friends to have a quick lunch before one friend had to get a train back to London. Informed the bar staff of this (we had around 1 hour 10 mins before the train) and was told that the food would be ready in 10 minutes. 3 bagels and garlic bread. 20 minutes later and no sign of our food - we asked the bar staff who said that they had seen it being prepared and it was on its way. Another 10 minutes...and we finally get our lunch but completely unable to enjoy it! The waitress did offer us a free round of drinks as an apology but by then we were in such a rush we couldn't stay any longer. All this happened when there were only 2 other tables eating - one of whom came in after us and got their food before us!

A little market place pub with really friendly staff and a very talented chef. This is our second visit and we have eaten both times. The first time we had the salt beef I had it on a bagel and my wife had it on a roll. The meat was tender, flavourful and there was lots of it absolutely fantastic. We added a bowl of fries between us and were both full when we left. Just finished our second meal we both had fish and chips and wow. Large pieces of fresh cod (it was bigger than the plate) in a lovely light batter that was beautifully crisp and not greasy in the slightest. Nice big chunky chips, garden peas and a really nice tartar sauce rounded off the platefull. The portions here are big and are definitely worth the money just for the quality. Saying that the prices aren't ridiculous I have paid more for much much worse meals. Don't change a thing you have got it just right. Can't wait for our next visit and trying something else from the menu. If your in Truro go and have lunch here you won't regret it.

In Truro on a Sunday afternoon and saw a sign outside this pub advertising Sunday roasts from 12-5pm. We went in at 1.05pm to find it quite busy, but nothing major. The waitress told us to take a seat, where we sat for a few minutes before being moved on to another table. There was still no indication of being served, so we had to go to the bar and ask for roasts (which were not described on the menu). We were only then informed that they had run out of roast dinners- a full 3 hours and 55 minutes before the advertised end of their Sunday roast provision. We were incredulous and left.

This pub may not be the most glamourous looking place but the food was absolutely spot on. They had a board advertising their salt beef outside, we decided to give it a go and were not disappointed. There were 5 of us dining and we all ordered a salt beef bagel, but I also ordered a charcuterie board for us to share and a portion of chunky chips. The charcuterie board was fantastic, a selection of cheeses, cured meats, hummus, salad beautifully dressed, ciabatta bread and olives and chutney, plus dipping oil/balsamic, we were all able to have a little nibble. The bagels were well filled with the lovely salt beef, and dressed salad on the side and a portion of mustard mayo. We also had the chunky chips to share which were very chunky and very delicious. A terrible experience. We were due to meet up with friends so we had an early tea in this pub before hand. We walked in and ordered a meal only to find that their card machine was not working so it was cash only. We then waited a long time (about 45mins) for the meal (that was whilst it was quiet in the pub) and when it came, although it looked nicely presented, it was hardly warm. The plates were also cold. Hot meals should be served on hot plates. I am sure it would have tasted good if it was hot, but cold mash was not good. My husband's was undercooked. If we had not been in a hurry we would have made a fuss, but because of the wait we were already running late to meet our friends. Another annoyance was that, my husband used the toilets and he reported that they were disgusting. A pub that serves food should have decent toilet facilities. The whole pub was shabby, needed painting and there were several light bulbs gone. How much would it cost to replace the light bulbs and put a bit of paint on the walls? The paint was just peeling off the walls. It was just awful. I certainly would not recommend it.

Looks like a traditional boozer from the outside, quite a surprise food-wise within. It's something of a man crèche during visits to Truro for shopping, but a great place to meet up centrally. We ate here over several visits during the winter months and thought we'd found something special in the centre of Lemon Quay. Our visit yesterday just confirmed it wasn't an out-of-season fluke and for pub food this place is a diamond in the rough. It's always full of people eating and drinking but not too loud or crowded, if you have to wait a few minutes at the bar for a table to become free? Nice to see an independent pub doing well ~ Not a big fan of those loud & standardised pub chains. If you like salt beef? - I'd heartily recommend you to their salt beef baps. These slide down nicely with a side order of chips or onion rings, some decent company & a pint. They let you take one away too when you over-reach on sharing a second one; because the first one was too nice (to settle for just one helping anyway) Staff here are busy, but very helpful- The portions are good and they do takeaway anyway. If salt beef doesn't float your boat, then the belly pork baps will absolutely hit the spot. For those of you that remember when the Pannier Market used to be fronted by a huge food place offering belly pork baps, bacon sandwiches, pasties and loads of other local delights....... These will bring back a lot of good memories from about ten years ago. They're pretty delicious and come with crackling, apple sauce & stuffing. The food here is thoughtful, but not flashy. The customers range between theatre-goers to locals sharing a pint after work. It's basic in terms of layout & decoration; but clean and friendly and well worth a visit for a burger, a big meal or a night out with mates. Loving these hot baps, the takeaway options, the salt beef especially (because it offers something different in the city centre) and the menu is thoughtful too, so we'll be back.

Visiting Truro for the day and wandered round looking for a decent pub lunch without much success. Stumbled on the Market Inn. Outside nothing much to recommend it , inside a bit tatty and tired. But the service was very friendly . The food was slow in coming but when it came it was a real surprise - really delicious and excellent value. We had a chicken ballantine and a very tasty moroccan fish stew. With a good tidy up and a bit of flair in creating a more attractive atmosphere it would be really excellent. We'll definitely go back.

As a couple we've frequented the Market Inn, a number of times. Summer sun bathes the outside seating area in the evening. Fantastic. We tend to support independent business rather than national pub chains. And the staff of the Market Inn are great.Truro has a problem with food grabbing Gulls, therefore eating outside is always going to be problematic. The problem we had last night (5/07/17) was the amount of Fag butts on the floor around every table outside. There was a council waste bin within five metres of the farthest table with "stub out" facility. Why do smokers feel the need to throw stubs on the floor? It's disgusting. It brings the feel of the area down. The Inn could put ashtrays on every table, but it doesn't seem to be the "in thing" these days.I realise there's a cost to everything, but more staff visits to the outside area, would be beneficial, in cleanliness as well as less glass breakage from Gulls.Possibly the council could erect a sign reminding people to use waste bins, as opposed to the floor.

We popped in here on Father's Day expecting it to be packed but found a table quite easily. We had bagels/rolls that were very tasty and freshly made plus a side order of fantastic chunky chips. The staff were ever so nice making our lunch very relaxing and enjoyable. Definitely recommend for lunch.

Family visit to the Market Inn on a day out to Truro. Lovely old pub, ideal for locals and tourists. Service is very friendly and the atmosphere is brilliant, really olde original type of pub.The menu gives plenty of choice, my wife went for the hot salt beef batch, my daughter went for a burger and I went for the paella. The food arrived pretty quickly and looked very appetizing. The paella was incredible and really filling, the two huge prawns in shells served on the top were beautiful.Well worth the visit, pity I was driving or we would have stayed for quite a few drinks in this great old pub.

This is a nice inn and both our main dishes were both filling and very enjoyable-a nice quality meal at a good price. The bar service is also both friendly and quick. The lower rating was for the time taken from ordering to serving at our table-it was unacceptably slow and we ordered the dinner meal early in the evening when it was not busy all.

We visited Truro for the first time and wandered around looking at various eateries. We almost went to Mannings but....the menu at the Market Inn looked intriguing and offered what you should expect in Truro i.e. Fowey mussels, fresh fish etc.Don't be put off by the exterior, it looks like a 'proper old boozer', take the plunge and enter the tiny door. The interior is a bit quirky in a good way, clean and inviting and a smile from the waitress/barmaid was a warm welcome. As it turned out, she was obviously very inexperienced and, despite being on her own, did a good job always with a smile. We chose to have a sharing platter for a starter, which was huge! Smoked salmon with cream cheese studded with spring onion, smoked mackerel, two very large grilled king prawns, a well dressed salad, warm ciabatta and the star turn...curried squid. Sounds intriguing, slightly weird but oooh yummy, yummy, and lots of it. Lightly curried, crisp yet soft inside, calamari rings. Yes please, I could eat a bucketful.A very generous portion of moules mariniere were excellent and a home made fish pie was both generous and very tasty, topped with two more large king prawns. We also had a bottle of rioja, at £17, which was one of the nicest we have ever had. The prices here are very reasonable and the meals we had were well cooked and full of flavour.I note previous comment on here about the toilets, it looks like they have sorted that out. So, if you want reasonably priced, tasty food that's relevant to being in Cornwall with all its' good produce, then try this place. I would travel miles for those curried calamari !

Took my wife here for a meal after a presentation at Lander Gallery. We had great expectations, which in reality were totally destroyed. I ordered a classic burger and chunky chips. When they eventually arrived, after a considerable wait, the food was AWFUL. The burger itself was cremated, and I actually had to cut through an incinerated burger. It was awful. We will not be eating here again.

This place is a bit strange. It looks like a pub from the outside, but not really sure how to describe the inside. The food was good and well worth the wait. The toilets could do with a good clean. As one member of staff commented when I asked where the gents was, "Just follow your nose." Will be in no hurry to return.

It's a pity that I have to give an "overall rating". I want to give a range of comments that might attarct a score between 2 & 5.The service was very good & friendly and was a welcome feature. If this was a restaurant I would mark the food down. But it has to be based on pub standards. The dish I had - chicken ballotine - was pretty good. Nicely flavoured, well cooked & good quantity. The beer was boring, lacked flavour & too cold. The available wine was a bit limited & the shiraz I drank was not good.Just a final observation that doesn't apply to this pub uniquely: why on earth do so many men feel it OK to all stand around the bar drinking (when there are lots of seats & tables free) & making it next to impossible to get in to be served!?

We were on a four day trip to Truro and had a drink in this pleasant pub on day one - thought the food coming out of the kitchen looked very appetising. Finally ate here on the last night and how we wished we had tried it sooner - faultless freshly cooked food. We started with sharing grilled halloumi and a plate of calamari and both dishes were delicious. Next we both had their chicken with asparagus (one of the dishes we had spotted on day one) and it did not disappoint- so tasty, fresh and beautifully presented. On top of this, they serve a decent pint, so my husband tells me, their house wine is good and reasonably priced, staff are friendly and efficient and the tables and chairs are comfortable. Told it is advisable to book if there is something on next door at the Hall for Cornwall, we had no trouble finding a seat any time we visited the pub. Hope to return to Truro for another short break, largely so we can eat again at this super place.

Quite frankly one of the worst roast dinners I have had!Out drinks order was taken, and after 10-15 mins, still no drinks. We asked a waiter walking past the table, and he had to ask us again what drinks we had ordered, so the woman behind the bar had clearly forgotten. We ordered a child roast and a roast chicken and roast pork. After a while, the food came and it was atrocious. The Yorkshire puddings were literally black, the carrots were very large chunks - almost half a carrot, the green beans had not been too and tailed, the stuffing was horrible, the cauliflower cheese had clearly been warmed through and was lumpy and cold in the middle, and worst of all was the meat. The chicken was literally a boiled breast which was hideous - needless to say I didn't eat it. The other adult diner has roast pork - it was extremely fatty pork belly, and we weren't told at time of ordering that it was that cut of meat.We barely ate anything, and when the other diner complained at the point of settling the bill, the man behind he bad became irritated and insinuated that we didn't want to pay anything for any of our meals....erm...yes! That's right! We barely ate a thing and it was terrible. However, the other diner did pay for her meal despite it being awful, due to the response she got from the person serving her.All in all, terrible food, tired interior, service was poor and general attitude towards customers we found to be far from expected. Definitely avoid!

We arrived in Truro hungry, and I spotted the fish and chips on the board outside, but when we got in, the menu sounded lovely, so I had a veg curry, and 2 of us had steak with different sauces. There was a choice of 3 types of chips, fat, thin or sweet, and everyone really enjoyed the food. Nom nom noises were coming from everyone. Yummy. Oh, the staff were really friendly as well.

Excellent range of menu choices from delicious lighter bites to hearty very tasty Sunday Roasts. All beautifully cooked and served at very good value prices. They are thus very popular and waiting times from order to service can run to half hour in busiest times, but all well worth the wait.

Popped in for some dinner before catching a show at the Hall for Cornwall and it was delicious. Really pleased with the seafood noodles, as this type of dish can be watery and thin. This was deliciously thick and there was plenty of seafood as well as decent thick noodles. Food arrived in a timely way and staff seemed friendly too.

We stumbled upon this pub looking to escape the weather on a very wet January day, so glad we did. We got a friendly welcome, the beer was good and so was the wine.We had a utterly delicious lunch,a mix of snacks, squid, prawns and chips. You only got about 6 chips per portion but they were silly huge, crunchy on the outside, soft in the middle and delicious. The roast lunches looked great also.

Been coming here for a few years whenever we visit Truro. Very friendly helpful staff. Dogs always welcome although dog bowl bit small for lab size dogs they just have to refill. Food is delicious the Tempura prawns are a great snack/starter. Salt beef is excellent just how it should be. Skinny chips are ok. Highly recommend although it is small so may be busy at popular times.

Called in for a drink and a snack seems quite nice at first the food was OK but the cleanliness was poor the toilets smelt and everywhere was dirty if you looked closely. The staff were pleasant but weren't very good at completing your service we had to ask twice for milk for one persons tea and another table near us also had to ask for something twice which should have been obvious to complete the service it was mainly the female member of staff that was letting them down. Definitely will not return.

Like many, we have only visited this place whilst having a trip to the Hall for Cornwall, a couple of doors up. It is very popular with theatre goers but also seems to attract a mix of locals and work parties. Consequently it is a very busy bar although we always manage to get served and find seats. It's an attractive and comfortable place, lively, warm and friendly.Recommended highly.
