By my reckoning, the Spread Eagle must have been closed for 4 years. What a sad waste of a great pub in an enviable location. I can only hope the brewery manage to find a new manager, but I won't hold my breath.

I have never been as embarrassed as I was on Monday night in this establishment. My husband and I had called in for a quick drink on our way home from a trip away. We had never been in before but had been in other Sam's pubs. The pub was lovely and spotlessly clean and everyone was very friendly. The atmosphere was warming. Mr Smith (who I had seen several times before) walked into the pub in a worse for wear state. He asked to speak to the manager. When the manager came I have never known anyone be spoke to in such a manner. Humphrey Smith was down right rude. The couple were very nice but he just would not listen. He was shouting at them in front of everyone. Not only did he belittle them he was also very Condescending about the customers who were in there. Frankly I am absolutely appalled and feel very sorry for this couple. I have passed the pub since Monday and it now appears to be shut. Long may it stay shut if people who are trying to do a good job are treat like that. I have been in many Sam Smiths pubs but I refuse to put money in this mans pocket and would encourage all to do the same

My husband and I called in on Monday evening for some drinks, the pub had been closed for a while so it was nice to see it back open. The new landlord and landlady were so lovely and welcoming, nothing was too much trouble and they purposely went out of their way to ensure everybody was happy. Enter Mr Smith himself DRUNK and talking (well shouting) at the couple like something he had stepped in infront of the whole pub. It was an awful thing to watch, his attitude was disgusting and he was an absolute disgrace behaving the way he did. When customers tried to speak to him to defend the couple he spoke to them in the same manner. He then stumbled to his car and DROVE away whilst clearly intoxicated. I will never ever step foot in a Sam Smith establishment again and will be passing the word on! What an awful thing to do to people who were doing a fantastic job and also to those customers that keep him in business.

Since eating here the pub has closed but is due to reopen November 2019. The menu was not extensive but had all the regular pub grub one would expect at very reasonable prices. Didnt take long to arrive at the table. As this is Sam Smith pub the drinks are cheaper than most places. hope its as good when it reopens

The Spread Eagle is a very old pub which has changed quite a bit over the years. I haven't been to it for quite a while but I still thought it is a lovely place. It was very busy, even though it was mid week. A good atmosphere and staff welcoming and very attentive. Wasn't quite sure about the menu though, not sure what direction it is trying to go, either pub grub, or al a carte. The meal was good but I thought it too expensive and although Ienjoyed it I doubt very much I would eat there again. Would definitely go for a drink though as its a lovely place.

We visited for Sunday lunch. The food was of good quality and there was plenty of it. We were given a really warm welcome and well looked after. Very reasonably priced for drinks and food. The Sunday lunch menu was a little limited in that there was only a choice of 3 roast dinners available and no other alternative. However, what we had was great and we enjoyed it.

We visit this SAM Smiths pub on a regular basis as it’s quite local to where we live, and i have to say it’s a fantastic little country pub, which serves good quality ales and lagers at extremely cheap prices, the food is also of exceptional quality and now a special mention for the landlord and landlady Ollie & Hayley, they were new to the pub game when they took over a few months ago, but what fantastic people they are so friendly with a good positive attitude, the beers they serve are always spot on, the bitter holds it’s head all the way down the glass which is a great sign. This pub has struggled to keep regular landlords, so a special request to Sam Smiths brewery please leave Ollie & Hayley alone and encourage them in making a go of this special little pub !!!

Visited for Sunday Lunch after trip to Nostell Priory with a friend. Having had to give the order four times noone seemed to know how to work the contactless card machine and when they sorted using the chip and pin key no one seemed to want to offer or know how to print the receipt. The food was taken to the wrong table and brought to us 5 minutes later cold!! Eventually got it back microwave heated. Don't know why they bothered. Placing the food at either end of a long oblong plate with three merge slices of beef drownings in bisto may look artistic but you might have well as served it on a rugby pitch. The minuscule veg certainly didn't fill the acres between the rest. And to cap it all when the plates were collected we weren't even asked how the food was! Well it wasn't is the answer. Thank goodness there was food in the fridge when we got home.

2 comidas y 2 refrescos £18 tan razonable relación calidad-precio.

We went here for lunch, sat down and waited for our food, the surrounding was nice and pleasant. We received our food and about 5 minutes in a stench wafted across our table; wet dog. The dog was freely walking around the room whilst we ate, at one point it stuck it's nose against the plate to smell our food. At this point we found out that the entire dining areas were free for dogs to walk around as they please. There was no designated area diners could eat free of the smell of wet dog.Deciding whether to go here for food?If you're fine with dogs walking up to you as you eat, inclusive of the smells then give it a go. Otherwise I'd suggest find a pub/place with a designated animal free dining zone.

We visited for Sunday lunch and were impressed with the decor and cleanliness of the pub. We both ordered Sunday lunch which arrived quickly, the Yorkshire pudding was nice and the meat good but we found the portion size was quite small and vegetables plain (we usually get cauliflower cheese and accompaniments such as crackling or stuffing at other pubs we visit in Ackworth where we usually go). I had rung ahead to make sure that the two dogs would be welcome to come in while we ate and were assured they were. Accordingly we met our friends, another couple but no dogs in the large garden of this lovely pub but soon went inside because of a chill wind blowing across the adjacent fields. We were served our drinks by a young, pretty and very friendly you lady who came and made a great fuss of the two canines and gave them a biscuit each! We all chose our meal from a varied, but not too large menu, one cod and chips, one pie, veg and potatoes and two fish pies. These all arrived in due time, piping hot and all declared very, very delicious. I was very jealous of my husbands' fish and chips and shall have them next time! We really shouldn't have but we ordered three puddings, two of us had the fruit crumble and custard and our friends shared the chocolate brownie with ice cream. Everything again enjoyed even though hubby and I thought the crumble was more crunchy than claggy! Then time to walk it all off at Nostell Priory, just a few minutes drive up the road! My husband and I were looking for a local dog-friendly pub to eat at and found The Spread Eagle through Tripadvisor. It's a shame they don't have a website as I often find this helpful in planning a nice trip out for food. The pub is beautiful - old and full of character but well kempt inside. We were lucky enough to sit on a table next to an open fire which was lovely. Initially there were some rather loud regulars in but they quickly dispersed and then the pub was very quiet which we enjoyed. The staff were welcoming and friendly - a young bar man and a young lady (the landlady?) - with us and our 2 dogs. The menu offers the usual pub classics - lasagne, burger, scampi, pies. We had breaded mushrooms with garlic dip to start which were nice and I had a delicious chicken and tarragon pie for my main course whilst my husband enjoyed the gammon. Unfortunately of the 3 dessert choices we didn't like the options so chose to pass. The service was efficient and the meal was really reasonably priced - £26 for 2 courses with 2 large soft drinks. We enjoyed our visit here and will likely return again.

She had a delicious fish pie, full of pollock, salmon, smoked haddock and prawns. I had the steak and ale pie with chips, which appeared to be a shortcrust suet pastry. The pastry was perfect and the steak inside was plentiful and tender. Both dishes were served with freshly cooked vegetables, and came piping hot. Most of the main courses were between £7 and £8, and the starters and desserts were also competitively priced. At just over £18 for the meal, a pint and a tonic water, it was excellent value for superb no nonsense traditional pub fayre. The staff and regulars were friendly and polite.Great place for couples or a family meal. This is a friendly, comfortable pub, whether to enjoy a quick drink or spend an evening having dinner with friends. Although a small concern, a booking for 12 at a day's notice doesn't faze them and there's plenty of room to dine in comfort. Main menu dishes are well prepared, promptly served and reasonably priced, with more than one vegetarian option. If I have a criticism it's that the dessert menu is far more limited and the beer, though very well kept, is restricted to Samuel Smith's - but I can live with that. The Spread Eagle is one of my favourite venues in the Wakefield-Pontefract area. Plenty of parking, large garden area for kids or sitting outside in fine weather.

Stone floors and roaring open fires in inglenook fireplaces - a pint in your hand and a decent plate of food in front of you - what more could you ask for on a winter's evening? We came here on the recommendation of a friend and were not disappointed. The beer was good and the food was tasty. The pub has no pretentions of being a gastro pub - it just does good wholesome food at a very reasonable price - 2 drinks 2 mains and a starter for £21. The young lady serving us was very friendly and efficient - will be back

I booked lunch on a Saturday for 13 people from a special menu provided in advance by 'phone. Orders were 'phoned in two hours before arrival; we had only just over an hour to be in and out again. Drinks from the bar included tea and coffee, all served efficiently and with proper tea pots. Food was served promptly at the agreed time and everyone was served together at reserved tables. The food was piping hot and of high quality. The service was excellent, pleasant, prompt and attentive. Everyone was offered extra veg if desired but there was plenty. Desserts were ordered as required and also served quickly. The Sticky Toffee pud was as good as I have had anywhere; excellent. 13 out of 13 said they were very satisfied with the meal from every point of view, including value. The price was very reasonable. Also the Sam Smiths ale was in very top condition. The pub itself is a pleasant environment and the others drinking there all made our party feel welcome. Well done to Kath; our hostess.

Fell up on this place recently and so glad we have. Such a warm friendly welcome from the two girls. There is a roaring fire which makes the place so cosyThere is a good menu of home cooked basic pub food, tasty and not pretentious. There are only desserts so that could do with revewing - i dont think these were home madeExcellent service, cant do enough for youAnd cheap beer...what more can you ask?!

It is great to see this pub has settled down after the internal arguments between pub and Sam Smiths Brewery. The young lass who now runs the pub is very dedicated towards the pub, service and all else concerned. Compare this with a year ago when it had a different Landlord/Lady every other week in between shutting down. The beers are well kept, and standard Sam Smiths offerings. The food is great too, with a good choice. Lovely real fires in winter and a stunning beer garden with good views in summer. Love it.

Well, first time from a recommendation, well worth it, this young lady she was so versatile, not only did she pull a pint, she took an order without a writing pad but she cooked our food for all four of us all within a 20 minute gap. You can go to restaurants and they take longer. Going onto the food, absolutely excellent, great pub and exceptional staff, will definitely come again, excellent!!!!!

Called in for tea after being recommended by a friend. I'd not stepped foot in a Sam smiths pub since childhood but it seamed just the same. Beer was great and food a pleasant surprise, nothing fancy but really well cooked, and the open fire gave a nice ambiance. Best part was the bill, very cheap for what we had. Defiantly be back

Friendly staff and a lovely atmosphere with the log fire keeping us all warm & cosy. Six of us visited for a meal and the menu gave a great choice of food, which was all excellent and very enjoyable. Living in a nearby village we should have been before and will definitely be returning. Recommended!

After scouring trip advisor me and my family decided on the spread eagle. Turned out to be the right decision amazing food nachos were best I've had anywhere the pub is so cosy and the open fires were roaring as it was a rainy cold day outside the staff were really nice with our children and all had good knowledge of the foods they were serving and also the drinks. Fantastic place will deffo be returning here.

Probably the worst experience I've had in a Weatherspoons. Ordered two all day brunch meals, both was really disappointing. Eggs was undercooked, sausages tasted off, beans had no flavor. Black pudding was nice, and the bacon was fine but overshadowed by everything else. There was a lack of tables mostly due to mess left by previous customers. Both of us had a dodgy stomach afterwards, can't say we'll be dashing back. I know it's weatherspoons and not a gourmet restaurant but should be better then this.

Drinks are cheaper than anywhere that I know off. Food on the other hand I think is over priced for what you get. Seems busy even during the week days which is good.

Very disappointed today. No heating in the place so very cold and took 1hr 20 mins for our food to arrive. 1 meal missing an item and all four meals on the cool side. Didn't have time to ask for it heating up as 1 of us had an appointment to get to. Fair enough they did reduce the overall cost but non of us enjoyed ourselves. Not like it used to be so sadly it won't be on our list of places for lunch anymore.

Cafe requires more staff as people's orders were getting mixed up and queuing for a long time for drinks . Staff seemed under pressure and disheartened .
