The sportsman has had the same menu for at least 2 years,it’s beggars belief and it’s the old chefs menu. They really don’t know what there doing in that place. The roast dinner,I wouldn’t serve that to a dog. There only and main concern in that place is the locals who only drink, don’t upset them or your won’t have a business at all. But if you’re into a bit of swinging that’s your place, locals are up for anything including the owner.

We just had a large family birthday lunch including kids and dogs at The Sportsman which was a resounding success. Whilst not a private room as such, we were able to have a large curtained off area to ourselves which worked very well. Unsurprisingly we had followed reviews of the food so came prepared to be critical, however the food - which was pre-ordered due to the numbers - was perfect in all respects with Lisa and her staff working hard to ensure the lunch was a success. We have no hesitation in recommending others to use the pub as we did. Should we dig deep to find a negative, whilst a pub cannot be all things to everyone, for a lot of people these days coffee is a lifestyle and they expect a greater choice than instant or filter.

A lovely location for dog walking and the pub is very dog orientated. We stopped for a quick drink on the terrace to enjoy the late afternoon sunshine. The terrace was set up with cushions and blankets, which was very welcoming. However, a pint of beer and a large white wine cost us £19.60 making this pub more expensive than any other local pub we've tried recently. In fact, it cost more than the equivalent round of drinks in Covent Garden.

Have used this pub on many occasions and always enjoy the remote location. Unfortunately the once cosy pub has lost its charm, the service is slow… very slow. The food was disappointing, the bar service slow. it seemed more important to have a conversation amongst themselves than serve… And let’s not forget the car park, if you don’t register your car you are kindly reminded with a heavy fine 2 weeks later…. But no mention of having to register your car when you are being served….. Disappointing, a once nice pub is being run down… it doesn’t have passing trade, most are walkers and cyclists… and you need to know this pub exists… an expensive meal and drink.

A gem tucked away in the Surrey countryside. The pub is very dog-friendly, with lots of individual water bowls staggered around the huge beer garden. The staff were all really pleasant and helpful, and there is quite a bit of parking on site. Parking is validated for customers. The food was on par with a Wetherspoons, but nowt wrong with that.

Like the previous post I’ve just been fined for using the car park. I’ve been so many times before to this pub and never had a problem. The sign is badly worded as is suggests that only walkers need to pay or maybe something has changed. I was in the beer garden with my family spending money and still got fined. I’m not happy and won’t be returning. This has never happened before so don’t know why I’ve been fined now.

Will never return due to the £100 parking fine I received when I visited. My partner and I completely missed any signage relating to a need to register. As others have said, you just don't expect to have to pay/register to use a pub car park and therefore did not check for signs. My advice to management is to stop this practice and just put a sign up saying it is for the use of customers only.

Lovely big seating area out front and in the beer garden. Extremely dog friendly and unlike most pubs if you want to treat your pooch just ask at the bar and they will do freshly cooked sausages no hesitation at all. Headed to this pub/restaurant as it was a family memory heading here after work. Either the staff or management has changed as it was nothing to what I remembered it was. First off, the parking situation is really dangerous and unsafe. It's a tight blind corner into the parking lot which you have to walk round to get to the front of the pub, our dog nearly got ran over due to someone driving round (not fast but due to how tight it was they nearly hit us/our dog) The pub itself looked dark, sad and grungy. Not what I remembered it to be. The staff seemed like they didn't want to be there, the lady who served us asked us to repeat our order 4 times (the pub was quiet and almost empty) which I found a bit embarrassing, either she was new or don't know what she was doing. The food was nothing to write home about, the gammon was cold and stringy, the chips had black bits all over them (poor quality potatoes), I can't comment on family members food however they said they weren't very impressed. The foods were a bit expensive for what we received and the drinks were very low quality. We ordered a coke and it was just wishy washy, when the server tried it they said there was nearly no syrup in there, and she said "sorry" and walked away, no refund, no new drink or anything, left a sour taste in our mouth. Would not recommend eating here and would encourage trying somewhere else.

My friend and I visited the Sportmans pub for the first time recently. On first impression it was well presented along with the staff being very welcoming and attentive. We both ordered the roast chicken and when it came out, I must admit for the price you pay, we were very disappointed. When speaking with the staff, it was apparent concerns about the roast’s portions had been a frequent issue raised by customers. The staff were apologetic but considering this might be a frequent complaint, perhaps it should be reviewed to aid customers satisfaction.

This is a pub I've known for 40+ years and when visited has always been pretty good. Staff on this occasion were very friendly and helpful but fear the food was a major disappointment. At nearly £20 for a salad we were expecting something a bit special. The Orange and Goats Cheese was not. No frisee lettuce, barely noticeable orange and the goats cheese was just a few tiny pellets. In fact it peppers and onions predominated the dish. I would be lying if the mustard dressing had much flavour either. A real shame and this dish needs a lot of attention.

I used to come to this pub regularly but this was my first visit in 5 years, since moving house. It’s a beautiful pub, great location, perfect if you have a dog. I went with my husband and we met friends there. The food though was not up to the standard it has been previously. I ordered slow cooked ribs. You’d think being slow cooked the meat would fall off the bone, but they were tough and chewy. Nor did they come with chips. I think they were supposed to but instead I got salad. Who the hell wants salad with ribs? I ordered apple crumble for desert. It was tasteless. The apples were obviously not the best and there was no hint of cloves or cinnamon. Overall disappointing on the food choices, for me anyway.

The lovely little country pub is an absolute delight! Lovely staff large garden and dog friendly. My family and I have been visiting this pub for the past 6 years and have never had an issues. After reading the 2 bad recent reviews left on here I would like to say that I was sat at the table next to the bar when the customers were extremely rude to the “manageress” (she was actually the owner). To the point the lovely lady customer called her a b*itch and told her to wipe the smug look off her face, but much for a meal not arriving. The landlady was nothing but polite & pleasant. Please don’t believe all you read, the pub is lovely along with the staff, shame some customers don’t carry themselves in the same manner.

Beautiful surroundings to take your dogs for a walk. As for the pub service and staff attitude extremely poor. We booked for 4 people to have a meal, but because we chose to eat outside and they served only 3 of the meals ordered and completely forgot the 4th, had to ask for knives and forks, and remind them that we ordered drinks. Apparently it was our fault because we chose to sit outside instead of inside. To be fair we have visited the pub on many occasions in the hope things would improve, unfortunately that isn't the case. In fact in my opinion it's got worse.

Very disappointing! Shame as its usually good, but not today. Could list the problems we had with the food and service, but suffice to say we won't be recommending this anymore. To add to my previous review from a previous visit. We gave The Sportsman another chance today. Unfortunately it was far worse than last time. Waited a long time at the bar to be served drinks. Finally gave the order to a young barmaid, then she disappeared. A considerable time later when she reappeared i asked her "What is happening with our drink order"? Seems not only is she not allowed to serve drinks but also forgot to pass it on to someone else who can serve. Then we ordered our food (for 4 people) went outside to wait. Eventually 3 out of 4 meals arrived (no cutlery or instructions that we need to collect it ourselves) It was apparent the 4th meal was not going to arrive . Asked a waitress about the missing meal, she said she'd check for us, but she didnt come back. Eventually we went in to check ourselves. The order had registered on the pub pc. Just not put through for delivery. Manageress so rude and blamed it on that we had booked a table for inside but had changed to sitting outside. Seriously???? It was a very disappointing experience and we won't be giving them a third chance. Got a refund for the elusive meal and was glad to leave.

The location is beautiful. I can imagine how lovely it would be in summer where you can enjoy drinks outside and watch all the beautiful dogs returning from their walks. The service was great and the staff very attentive. There is ample parking outside which you would have to pay, not sure if you can be reimbursed though! The negative was the food... we ordered sticky chicken, not sure why we got fried chicken? It was really hard to chew as you can see from the pictures. My mother and I had scampi, the scampi was watery so it was straight from the freezer and smelled very fishy .... the tartar sauce was awful, it tasted more like a mustard sauce. The pie was nothing like what we had a few years ago at our first visit to this pub. Since my daughter did not want mayo with her burger, it was bland and dry. I am not sure whether the cook is new, but he or she is not that good in the kitchen sadly. Also at one point I thought we were going to suffocate from smoke inhalation due to a wet logs with my mum suffering from COPD and my daughter from asthma. Would we recommend this place, yet but not for food.

We were then offered a table in a tiny, cold area on the other side of the bar with metal and plastic chairs, one broken. We opted for only main courses, which were all served on dessert size plates. Shrinkflation? The food was unremarkable, the scampi for two orders hard to find amidst the batter. Did it and the chips come straight from Brake Brothers or similar? Ham, egg and chips was served with a massive portion of flaccid salad. A "fry-up" with salad, really? The only coffee available was filter and there was a long wait for it as the machine had to be switched on. No brown sugar, just white in small packets. Service was OK, but no prizes.

Had a very disappointing lunch at the Sportsman…not down to the food (which was reasonable) but the appalling service we received. We had booked a table for 8 people (4 adults and 4 young children) at 12pm knowing we would have to be finished by 2pm. Not a problem. At 1.35pm our waitress reminded us that the table was booked for 2pm, we’d ordered puddings which were due out imminently so would be finished by 2. A few minutes later, another member of staff came over and asked if we could move to another table. I said we’d be finished by 2 but she said it would be a great help to her so we agreed. We packed all our stuff up and loitered waiting to be shown our new table. Had to go and ask to find out which table to move to….a tall bar table with 6 high seats, obviously not suitable for young children and not enough seats for us all. Our pudding arrived and we had to ask for an extra seat, our youngest guest had to sit on a lap as a high chair would have meant she wasn’t at table height with us all. By now we hadn’t received an apology or had it been acknowledged how disgruntled we were. We watched our old table be cleared and set up for the next customers within 5 minutes and it then sat empty for 25minutes. Meanwhile whist one of our children was trying to get off the bar stool a glass was knocked off. The staff didn’t even check if everything was ok, just muttered amongst themselves, one rolled their eyes to another and they said they’d have to hoover it up once we’d left. Meanwhile other customers walked through the broken glass (including dogs). We were in disbelief! Both the adults and children in our party had been polite / well behaved (unlike the dogs on the table behind us as we were eating!) and we couldn’t quite believe we were being treated so rudely. We felt like the staff then avoided us so we approached them for the bill. It arrived with still yet no apology or acknowledgment of what had happened. I said we won’t be paying the service charge due to the inconvenience caused and the way our visit had ended. Still no apology, just accepted my request. We would have had a lovely lunch had it not been for the way we were treated for the last half an hour. We did them a favour by moving table yet we were made to feel like we had done something wrong. We will not be returning and will not be recommending. The staff need more training in customer service!

Disappointing visit to the Sportsman. Have previously eaten here and it was my local pub in my younger days so fond memories. Decided to book for lunch at 14:30 on Wednesday. Arrived just after 2-30pm and was informed that the Kitchen was closing at 3pm! This despite the Website stating Kitchen open from 12-00 to 20-45 each weekday. Menu was not particularly extensive and we made a hurried selection for main courses and desserts. My partner received the wrong order, it was supposed to be Chicken in Katsu sauce with Jasmine rice and she received a deep fried piece of chicken in a soggy bun. Food was basic at best, no specials available and it felt similar to what you would expect at a Wetherspoons, for a bill in excess of £50 I expected a bit better quality. Will think twice about visiting for food again anytime soon.

We selected the venue due to its convenient location to a morning walk on the South Downs. Initial reaction was very positive with a warm welcome and a pleasant ambience. We all selected Beef sirloin as a main course. The meal arrived swimming in a very mediocre gravy immediately initiating a negative response. The beef though it must be said plentiful was tasteless and tough to the degree that my wife could not eat it. Rather than return the meal she elected to eat the veg rather than delay others meals. Her dissatisfaction was brought to the attention of the waitress but no apology or compensation was offered. The wrong dessert was then brought resulting in a delay. We aired our disappointment when the bill came with no recognition of the poor service and food, Sadly in the absence of an apology or explanation by the management our only recourse waso not leave a tip, which penalised the waitress rather than the establishment. Really poor experience not to be repeated or recommended

Those who attended ranged from young and elderly and the Sportsman’s team went out of their way to offer condolences to all, exemplary service and attention (even to the little ones), lovely spread of food for all ages, and a super relaxed environment, whilst keeping a keen eye on everyone's needs. A huge Thank You again from us…..and a special note to Jake…..who was a star!

Decent roast. Like everything in the UK now it’s almost unaffordable. £8.90 for a Brake Bros frozen then microwaved sticky toffee pudding that costs about £1.25 when bought in bulk is taking the piss. At that price you could and should be making your own. A load of spoons just chucked on the table with no serviettes for it as well. Problem with the UK now is that all these places think they can just charge loads of money because of costs, hire loads of staff and never train them. I’ll be back for a pint as I walk my dog here but really, the food is out of my reach now.

I often walk dogs there and buy a a brioche and dog sausage at the kiosk with the nice ladies but disappointed they've introduced 24hr parking again

Great spot, has a dog wash (really) in the car park. Hot and cold water rinse, shampoo and blow-dry. So after a muddy dog walk, you can get your dog clean. Car park is paid for, but free if you buy something from the pub. Great food and drinks and friendly staff. Not cheap, but good quality food.

We hadn't been to the Sportsman for a while, but our weekday lunch visit was a real treat. The food was delicious, beautifuly cooked and piping hot and the landlady and her team were really helpful sorting out the ramp for my Mum's wheelchair and going the extra mile making the meal a lovely experience for us. A log fire, great pub atmosphere and friendly dog walkers (and dogs) completed the package. Perfect.

Disappointing lunch. Used to be nice food but seems to have gone down hill. I had the chicken burger with chips. £15.95 which seems a bit steep for a burger but was hoping it was going to be special. It wasn't. the chicken was so dry it was inedible. When the guy came to take our plates I told him I couldn't eat the chicken as it was so dry. I expected someone to come and apologise. No one came. As we were leaving I asked the guy if he had told the kitchen about the chicken and he said "yes". I was getting a bit frustrated and so I asked "did they say anything??" Apparently they weren't bothered. Don't think I'll rush back there. It's a shame as it used to be a lovely place for a spot of lunch after a dog walk.

First time at this pub. Went for lunch , and was very disappointed. I ordered a Caesar salad with chicken, the lettuce was smothered in the dressing which was very sickly I only found two little bits of Parmesan and the chicken was dry. Very pricey as well £20 for probably the cheapest salad you can make.

Visited this lovely old pub on a Saturday lunchtime with family and we all really enjoyed our meal. The staff are so friendly and helpful and the food (especially their daily special pies!)was great. Reasonable selection of real ales and tap beers/lagers but unfortunately a very limited choice (ie just 1) of zero alcohol beers which one of our party wanted. It’s also a fantastic location for a walk over Walton Heath and the beautiful Colley Hill afterwards to burn off those lunch calories!! Definitely worth a visit!

This has got to be one of the best located pubs in the area. Worth a walk from Colley Hill, allow dogs and great beer. Loads of space outside too.

My girlfriend and I went to the Sportsman on Saturday evening for dinner and the Elvis tribute (by Matt who we had seen before). My girlfriend had steak pie, mash and vegetables and I had ham, egg and chips. We both thought our meals were excellent. We enjoyed the Elvis tribute which lasted about an hour and a half and most of the audience (including ourselves) danced to many of the numbers. Everyone had a good time.

We visited The Sportsman on Saturday (14 October) evening for the Elvis tribute which was very enjoyable. Although there was a small audience, Matt King got most up and dancing to his set. I had a meal of ham, egg and chips and my girlfriend had steak pie, mash and vegetables before the performance. Both thought our meals were excellent.

Slow service and no vegetarian options Really disappointed as there were vegetarian options last month, but they've all been taken off of them menu. Took them the entirety of the meal to bring out our sauces, no offer of a drink top and they had written down the wrong deserts on the board.

Really disappointed. This pub is in such a good spot to attract walkers, etc, but the beer was quite bad and the food awful. If I’d wanted reheated French fries that have sat around all day, a frozen deep fried chicken in a bap and packet coleslaw I could have used Capt Birdseye and a few other packets and tins. I asked when I ordered if the chicken burger was nice and got the stock answer and a fixed grin, “Well it’s all good”… no it isn’t. Maybe the roasts are better but somehow I doubt it, and the rest looks like food straight from the freezer. We looked around and saw hardly anyone eating despite it being an incredibly warm Sunday lunchtime. Clearly they’d heard too - don’t bother with the food. Nice spot but they need to get their act together.

What a shame. This used to be a lovely country pub, welcoming, friendly and we’ve visited many, many times what we regard as our ‘local’. But not anymore. Over the last few months to a year the atmosphere has slowly changed. The new decor is a nice touch, the food ok if very pricey, the junior staff always a credit. But it seems to be more of a private drinking club for a loud, brash clique; friends of the landlord(s) maybe? Anyway, what was a charming pub full of character, and a delight to be visited in any season, is now not. There are lots of other pubs in the local area we will be frequenting rather than this one.

Great location just off Walton Heath and a short diversion from North Downs Way. I lived near here for years but rarely visited as it got a bit cliquey back then. However it seemed fine on this occasion. The garden could have been tidier but food and drinks were great.

Good location close to multiple walking options, just off the M25, down a leafy lane. Hearty food and generous quantities. Service good from a friendly team, obviously well, managed. Sunday roast was good, good beer, cider and wine selections too. Outdoor coffee hut if just walking in the morning and a full dog shower if you have a four legged friend with you. Ambience could be better, mixed crowd of people, the interior is rather tired and needs a bit of TLC. The main bar area is the better place to sit we thought, certainly going to request that next time, rather than the second bar / dining room to the right of the pub. It seemed busy so hopefully in time a mini refurb / redecoration will be scheduled. The Sportsman could be great.

Returned here after 10 years having previously visited for a stag do. Friendly welcoming staff, pleasant atmosphere, decent selection on tap, and nice food, in big portions for a reasonable price. The homemade pie went down particularly well with my friend. Large outdoor seating area, popular with hikers and dog walkers, with water bowls for the dogs.
