Enjoyable and good value lunch served by attentive staff. Overheard other diners complimenting the food, so we were not alone in this. Whatever caused the poor reviews earlier appears to have been addressed by the pub, which is commendable. We would certainly consider lunch here again

Had a lovely lunch at the Sportsman today with a good mix from their tapas menu - really tasty and generous portions too at a good price. What really made it though were the staff who took the time to chat to us as if we were locals and made us feel really welcome ....a pleasant change from some of the more in and out type of pubs.

We were a party of four and had requested a "quiet table" but were shown to a table in the main bar area where "music" was blasting out. We were then offered a table in a tiny, cold area on the other side of the bar with metal and plastic chairs, one broken. We opted for only main courses, which were all served on dessert size plates. Shrinkflation? The food was unremarkable, the scampi for two orders hard to find amidst the batter. Did it and the chips come straight from Brake Brothers or similar? Ham, egg and chips was served with a massive portion of flaccid salad. A "fry-up" with salad, really? The only coffee available was filter and there was a long wait for it as the machine had to be switched on. No brown sugar, just white in small packets. Service was OK, but no prizes.

Had a very disappointing lunch at the Sportsman…not down to the food (which was reasonable) but the appalling service we received. We had booked a table for 8 people (4 adults and 4 young children) at 12pm knowing we would have to be finished by 2pm. Not a problem. At 1.35pm our waitress reminded us that the table was booked for 2pm, we’d ordered puddings which were due out imminently so would be finished by 2. A few minutes later, another member of staff came over and asked if we could move to another table. I said we’d be finished by 2 but she said it would be a great help to her so we agreed. We packed all our stuff up and loitered waiting to be shown our new table. Had to go and ask to find out which table to move to….a tall bar table with 6 high seats, obviously not suitable for young children and not enough seats for us all. Our pudding arrived and we had to ask for an extra seat, our youngest guest had to sit on a lap as a high chair would have meant she wasn’t at table height with us all. By now we hadn’t received an apology or had it been acknowledged how disgruntled we were. We watched our old table be cleared and set up for the next customers within 5 minutes and it then sat empty for 25minutes. Meanwhile whist one of our children was trying to get off the bar stool a glass was knocked off. The staff didn’t even check if everything was ok, just muttered amongst themselves, one rolled their eyes to another and they said they’d have to hoover it up once we’d left. Meanwhile other customers walked through the broken glass (including dogs). We were in disbelief! Both the adults and children in our party had been polite / well behaved (unlike the dogs on the table behind us as we were eating!) and we couldn’t quite believe we were being treated so rudely. We felt like the staff then avoided us so we approached them for the bill. It arrived with still yet no apology or acknowledgment of what had happened. I said we won’t be paying the service charge due to the inconvenience caused and the way our visit had ended. Still no apology, just accepted my request. We would have had a lovely lunch had it not been for the way we were treated for the last half an hour. We did them a favour by moving table yet we were made to feel like we had done something wrong. We will not be returning and will not be recommending. The staff need more training in customer service!

Poor food, dreadful service. Roast chicken was overcooked & dry, plate mostly filled with peas, potatoes and gravy. Sausages were very, very overcooked so that they were dried out and tough - even the kids wouldn't eat them. The waitress was rude, did the absolute bare minimum and avoided engaging with customers. This place is fine for a post-walk drink but do yourself a favour and avoid wasting your money eating here.

Disappointing visit to the Sportsman. Have previously eaten here and it was my local pub in my younger days so fond memories. Decided to book for lunch at 14:30 on Wednesday. Arrived just after 2-30pm and was informed that the Kitchen was closing at 3pm! This despite the Website stating Kitchen open from 12-00 to 20-45 each weekday. Menu was not particularly extensive and we made a hurried selection for main courses and desserts. My partner received the wrong order, it was supposed to be Chicken in Katsu sauce with Jasmine rice and she received a deep fried piece of chicken in a soggy bun. Food was basic at best, no specials available and it felt similar to what you would expect at a Wetherspoons, for a bill in excess of £50 I expected a bit better quality. Will think twice about visiting for food again anytime soon.

Our first visit for a long time as this pub had deteriorated. Pleased to say the current menu is more to our liking. Our lunch of gammon, egg, chips and salad followed by cheesecake and sticky toffee pudding was tasty and enjoyable. Staff were welcoming and attentive. We gather new management took over a few months ago. A bit surprised at the recent variable reviews - our experience was a good one and we plan to return soon.

We selected the venue due to its convenient location to a morning walk on the South Downs. Initial reaction was very positive with a warm welcome and a pleasant ambience. We all selected Beef sirloin as a main course. The meal arrived swimming in a very mediocre gravy immediately initiating a negative response. The beef though it must be said plentiful was tasteless and tough to the degree that my wife could not eat it. Rather than return the meal she elected to eat the veg rather than delay others meals. Her dissatisfaction was brought to the attention of the waitress but no apology or compensation was offered. The wrong dessert was then brought resulting in a delay. We aired our disappointment when the bill came with no recognition of the poor service and food, Sadly in the absence of an apology or explanation by the management our only recourse waso not leave a tip, which penalised the waitress rather than the establishment. Really poor experience not to be repeated or recommended

Disappointing lunch. Used to be nice food but seems to have gone down hill. I had the chicken burger with chips. £15.95 which seems a bit steep for a burger but was hoping it was going to be special. It wasn't. the chicken was so dry it was inedible. When the guy came to take our plates I told him I couldn't eat the chicken as it was so dry. I expected someone to come and apologise. No one came. As we were leaving I asked the guy if he had told the kitchen about the chicken and he said "yes". I was getting a bit frustrated and so I asked "did they say anything??" Apparently they weren't bothered. Don't think I'll rush back there. It's a shame as it used to be a lovely place for a spot of lunch after a dog walk.

Really disappointed. This pub is in such a good spot to attract walkers, etc, but the beer was quite bad and the food awful. If I’d wanted reheated French fries that have sat around all day, a frozen deep fried chicken in a bap and packet coleslaw I could have used Capt Birdseye and a few other packets and tins. I asked when I ordered if the chicken burger was nice and got the stock answer and a fixed grin, “Well it’s all good”… no it isn’t. Maybe the roasts are better but somehow I doubt it, and the rest looks like food straight from the freezer. We looked around and saw hardly anyone eating despite it being an incredibly warm Sunday lunchtime. Clearly they’d heard too - don’t bother with the food. Nice spot but they need to get their act together.

What a shame. This used to be a lovely country pub, welcoming, friendly and we’ve visited many, many times what we regard as our ‘local’. But not anymore. Over the last few months to a year the atmosphere has slowly changed. The new decor is a nice touch, the food ok if very pricey, the junior staff always a credit. But it seems to be more of a private drinking club for a loud, brash clique; friends of the landlord(s) maybe? Anyway, what was a charming pub full of character, and a delight to be visited in any season, is now not. There are lots of other pubs in the local area we will be frequenting rather than this one.

Good location close to multiple walking options, just off the M25, down a leafy lane. Hearty food and generous quantities. Service good from a friendly team, obviously well, managed. Sunday roast was good, good beer, cider and wine selections too. Outdoor coffee hut if just walking in the morning and a full dog shower if you have a four legged friend with you. Ambience could be better, mixed crowd of people, the interior is rather tired and needs a bit of TLC. The main bar area is the better place to sit we thought, certainly going to request that next time, rather than the second bar / dining room to the right of the pub. It seemed busy so hopefully in time a mini refurb / redecoration will be scheduled. The Sportsman could be great.

A few of us pitched up here for Sunday lunch. On arriving, it felt just the kind of pub I'd want to laze away a few hours in on a wet, windy, February afternoon, especially after a long walk. But the Sunday roast didn't quite evoke such warm sentiments. While the portions were huge, it was rather let down by under-cooked vegetables. Parsnips, broccoli and carrots could best be described as al dente, while the roast potatoes verged on the anaemic. Would certainly go back, there's a lot to like about the pub. But probably just to drink.

The kids all opted for chicken goujons and they came battered, looking just like my fish. Then to top it off strange looking halloumi fries arrived looking …just like the fish. My wife had a burger which she said was ok and the other adult had a pie which was a large piece of a pie. Real shame as the pub was always known for its good food.

This may seem weird as I gave it a five out of five but the food was terrible! We had a lovely walk with friends we hadn’t seen in a year , then went to the pub . It was lovely . Great atmosphere. Staff that served us were fantastic and we had the best afternoon ever . The pub is lovely and a perfect location .Everything else was so great that the food to be fair was irrelevant, but just have to be honest . My “ go to “ in any pub is fish pie and that’s the worst I’ve had . Over half the group said the food wasn’t great so it wasn’t just me . Personally I think there’s too much variety on the menu . The burgers are well known for how good they are , as are the pizzas I had there in the summer. Anyway . Everything about the pub is so perfect ( especially meeting up for a dog walk ) that our experience was not tarnished. I don’t usually leave reviews , but the food was not great at best . It won’t stop me coming back again and again but I’ll think twice about eating and just have a pint next time . Sorry . Just being honest

I have been coming here with my family and friends for over ten years (used to love the midweek curry and quiz!) but sadly has gone hugely downhill since reopening after lockdowns. I’ve been twice recently, both on a Sunday. The first was a few weeks ago - the food was not brilliant, the service slow and not friendly as it used to be. What happened to the amazing huge pies they used to do?! The portions were surprisingly small.Today, I booked a table in the dog friendly section. When we arrived we found we’d been put on one of the new ‘high’ bar stool tables in the bar area (there was no mention of a high/bar table when booking). We were with my 90 year old grandma who has hip problems. There is no way she could sit suspended with her legs dangling through a Sunday lunch. I asked to be seated elsewhere and the lady was incredibly rude - rather than apologise and try to help she just said ‘no other tables’ in a very dismissive tone. We were so upset we left.Sportsman - what are you doing?! You used to be one of the best Sunday lunch pubs around.

We have been regular customers to The Sportsman for many years. We have always enjoyed a long dog walk followed by a leisurely lunch in the garden to refuel. Unfortunately there is now a time limit in the car park so there is not enough time at the weekend when it is busy to enjoy a walk plus lunch as the service is too slow and you feel extremely rushed. We tried parking on the road at the top and were abused by the driver of a passing car from a local house who told us in no uncertain terms we were not to park on the road (there are no markings to indicate no parking and people have parked on the road when the car park has been full over the years). Such a shame the manager took the decision to charge and time limit the car park as many of the patrons were dog walkers due to it's location.

Lunch was lovely however I have potientally been double charged by the app showing an error and the manager doesn't seem to believe or want to help. As soon as the second payment came out I phoned and spoke to the manager. They said it would 99% automatically be refunded into my account so I'd need to wait a week. I explained that it wasn't a pending payment, I had already waited a few days for it to clear. However, I gave them the benefit of the doubt and waited. As it had not been refunded more than a week later I phoned twice more - the manager wasn't in, so they told me to leave my number and they would call me back as only the manager could deal with this. No one ever rang....At this point I was tempted to give up as the double charge was under £12 And simply not worth the effort. I rang once more. They said manager was in the kitchen so may not be able to speak about it.. I said that I'd left my number before so really wanted to speak to them. The manager attitude seemed like they didn't care or they didn't believe me. They said I'd have to come in with all the proof. That is fair enough but I explained that it was a 40m drive each way so not really practical. They didn't offer any other solution, so I asked if I could email it all in instead. They said yes and then gave me the wrong email (they said .com and the email bounced) after googling I found it was .co.uk and resent. However no one has responded to my email in a week - and I feel it has been ignored. Returning from Richmond Park on Monday 26th July, we stopped at The Sportsman for dinner at around 6.00pm. I'm giving the pub 4 stars as the service was excellent, the food and drink was good and I appreciated that it is dog friendly. I am primarily writing this, though, to make the pub awareI have been stung with a £100 fine for parking in their car park as one does not usually have to pay for the use of a pub car park as the pub is getting my custom. As a result, I got out of my car and proceeded to the bar to order food and drink. Unfortunately, the faceless companies that run ANPR car parks don't allow for honest mistakes and, no matter how much noise I make about this, I will still have to pay the fine.

What a lovely unexpected evening at the Sportsman as the golf lesson was rained off. Good wine, a roaring fire (I know! August! It was welcome) and a great time with friends all dressed for wet golf. Had a lovely chat with the new owners Lisa and Sean and they were telling me that with the money they have made from non customers in the car park they are buying a de-fibulator to put in the outside porch for walkers and horse riders! What a great idea for the community! Had a lovely night. Nice to have a local back

I was also at The Sportsman pub during August 2021, I came with friends and we had a lovely meal with fantastic service. The waitress couldn’t have done enough for us, prompt service and with a beautiful smile. I was also in the garden the same evening and watched as other customers were ordering food and then moving tables to sit in the sunlight, I then watched the waitress come out with their food and saw how confusing it was for them when customers move tables. The table numbering system they have in place clearly is confusing enough for the waitresses let alone when customers MOVE tables. I absolutely adore this pub and I find it bizarre how people can speak negatively about it. People are too quick to write bad reviews without understanding that the pub may have been short staffed that day, or the fact they people think it’s ok to have moved tables without telling the waitress and then wonder why their food goes to the wrong table!?

It has become the most bizarre place! with staff unable to deliver food to the table number you ordered it too, It’s odd. You order food and instead of delivering it too your table the waitress comes out snd shouts “who ordered pizza” and so our order was given to a group of small children. Their mortified parents waited 1.5hrs for food as did the table next to us. Our drinks sat on the bar for 30 minutes on a tray so we went to collect them in the end. Another evening some of the locals were swearing and arguing behind us. One staff member was really excellent, others were completely unprofessional with no apology for the terrible service. I’m not the staff’s “mate” and they just look so angy you just wouldn’t complain...

It's not clear at all and we certainly will not be going back. They may now have £100 from us but no more, ever again. What a shame.

My wife, two kids, dog and I visited The Sportsman at the weekend. After a long walk around Walton Heath, we were ready to eat. Having sat down and ordered our food and drinks, we were pleasantly surprised when everything turned up 20 minutes or so later. I had Fish pie, my wife had Nachos and they were all cooked to perfection and tasted great. The kids were suitably impressed with their burgers which I have to say looked top notch. A vast selection of beers including my favourite Harvey's best bitter - gorgeous! After our meal, one of the owners came over and had a lovely chat with us and made us feel most welcome. We look forward very much to returning to this beautiful independent pub and next time I'll leave the car behind!

Quaint pub on the edge of the Common, dog friendly, even inside which is a fairly small area to dine. Maybe an issue for non dog lovers while eating. However, we were fine and other people around us dining was difficult to stay social distance from one another, being such a small area.We ordered drinks prior to our meal, which have to say, had run out of the special ale, so opted for the norm. We were pretty famished after a long day and was looking forward to some good pub grub. Ham, egg and fries (no chunky chips). A bit sparse of one small slice of ham and over cooked egg. My friend had a pie, but ate the contents and left the pastry. We heard of another table complaining about the wait and we decided not to indulge in a dessert and then left the pub.The young lady that served us, was very pleasant and made a fuss of my friend's dog!

We have been regular drinkers at this pub, after walking our dog. Recently, we have tried the food. We went with two of our adult children, who are vegan. They wanted the nut roast but were unable to have this because butter is used in the nut roast. We then asked if they could have extra potatoes and omit the nut roast and the giant yorkshire pudding (non vegan) My husband's meal and mine arrived minus the cutlery and we waited a full 5 mins before finally having to get up from the table and ask for cutlery. One of the vegetable options, listed on the menu was absent and when we questioned it, the waiter seemed bemused. When my daughters' meals arrived, it was minus gravy...We asked for gravy but were told it was not vegan. Eventually a gravy boat arrived. The waiter had been mistaken, the gravy was vegan. When the bill arrived, we questioned the fact that we were being charged £14.00 for a roast which had the main ingredient plus the Yorkshire pudding absent. Although the bill was adjusted, we felt that it was done reluctantly without a hint of an apology. When we offered constructive criticism about the lack of cutlery, outside, in the cold...Our meal was also cold by the time we could eat it, we were met with a stoney silence. To say we were unimpressed is an understatement and we will not be rushing back here to eat very soon or at all. Very shoddy!

After waiting 15 mins to order drinks, when they finally arrived, my shandy didn't taste right. I politely mentioned this to the bar staff and was told the syrup had run out. I presume it was the landlady behind the bar, who made a big deal of topping up my drink from an opened bottle of lemonade whilst sarcastically singing "especially for you". The fact she had already admitted there was an issue with the dispenser surely should have made her more understanding. Customer service severely lacking. The other issue was the intrusive live music being played. Poor neighbours.

I was surprised to read here the review by “truthytruthy” and annoyed by its unfairness and inaccuracy. I was also sitting outside the Sportsman pub yesterday lunchtime (Sunday 6 Sept), enjoying a drink and the ‘truthy’ (sic) of the matter is that truthytruthy was sitting with another woman at one of the pub’s tables (on the edge of the common) and both of them were drinking their own WINE from miniature bottles that they had brought with them from elsewhere! It seems to me that it’s perfectly reasonable for the proprietor to object to someone using a table provided by the pub whilst drinking alcoholic drinks that were not purchased from the pub. I don’t know of any pub that would provide a warm welcome to people to ‘bring a bottle’ of their own wine..................In these challenging times isn’t it hard enough for pubs and restaurants to make a living without having to put up with some cheapskate occupying a table at lunchtime without buying anything from the pub? Contrary to truthytruthy’s opinion, the pub has lost none of its ‘warm, welcoming charm’ and it remains a dog friendly place. It has not been taken over by ‘an aggressive thug’ – the proprietors, Simon and Vicki, have been running the place for nearly two years. It’s a professionally run and well regarded pub and restaurant that deserves its good reputation.Incidentally, we very much enjoyed our visit and drinks yesterday, quenching our thirst after a dog walk. The staff are working hard and taking great care to follow the Covid-19 guidelines so, unsurprisingly, there was a short queue for the bar but it moved quickly and the service was as friendly as always.

We then ordered two pizza and a Stilton and walnut salad. The salad is advertised as a small plate and it lives up to it's name.We then waited from clearing our main course to getting offered our desert for ages and then for the desert to arrive seemed really long (other tables that ordered after us got theirs before us so assume they forgot) they then brought out the deserts but no spoons after another 15 minuets the spoons arrived by which time the ice cream and sorbet had melted. The staff were clearly trying their best but it felt like it was not in control We dud not feel welcome would not go back, such a shame we used to go there a lot, sadly it has lost its way.

For the past couple of years me and some mates have used this pub as the halfway point of our 300km off-road ride around London. This time around, due to some fairly terminal mechanical issues and associated faffing, we were running a bit behind schedule. The pub called about 7:30pm to find out if we were nearby because the kitchen was closing at 8:00. When we said we were at least an hour away, they took our orders over the phone and promised to keep them warm for us. When we arrived about 8:30, they had gone one better, and the chef had kept the kitchen open an extra half hour just for us. In short order we had some enormous piping hot pizzas and some cold pints in front of us. After a very long day, I swear, nothing has ever tasted so good. The staff were all absolutely lovely, had a good laugh at the sweaty, dirty blokes turning up out of the darkness, and genuinely made us extremely welcome. Ignoring all of this, The Sportsman is just a lovely pub. Good beer choice, food is excellent, nice big beer garden, picturesque village. The staff just make it extra good. For anyone bikepacking or touring around the beautiful Surrey Hills area, I'd highly recommend a visit to this pub.

The Sportsman experience is initially a little underwhelming. It looks and feels like a pub. You have to order from a blackboard (unsure why, maybe it’s because they don’t want to waste paper, that’s not explained). You get paper napkins, bare tables, no side plates for bread, as I’m sure everyone else has moaned about. Then you leave and realise you have just eaten two of the best dishes you’ve had in your life (for me a silky cauliflower soup, and a still-warm pear and almond tart with raw creme fraiche). The wine list is fairly short, well-priced, but doesn’t really match the ambition of the food.We would definitely come back. We were well-fed and really well looked after.
