Beware the strict parking rules! We didn't notice the signs & failed to register. We provided proof of purchase & this was accepted - but this still resulted in a 'customer 1st time offender' reduced fine of £20, which we understand would also have applied if we had mis-keyed the reg. In the past I have forgotten & probably also mis-keyed at Lydl, but have never been fined, as they are just protecting their car park for customers - not trying to get extra revenue from them. In the past we have parked at the Sportsman to walk and then eat, this could easily go over the 2 hour max. So we will not be using this pub again as the risk of a £50 fine for a typing or timekeeping slip are not worth it for us.

Food was over priced and service even worse-47£ for two burgers and two soft drinks. Waitress was rude- when she brought our food out, I asked for cutlery and ketchup. She told me to get it from inside to my disappointment. When collecting the cutlery, I could hear her complaining about my annoyance to her coworkers. Dog friendly.

The worst service and food. We had a family celebration meal for a group of just under 10 people and went for a Sunday evening roast. We pre booked nearly 2 weeks before going, to give the team time to accommodate. We had already chosen our roast options before arriving to help the kitchen with the busy Sunday period and we had one person not having a roast. Once half of the party had arrived the team were already pushing for the remaining food order and were wanting to know what the order was for the one person not getting a roast. This then proceeded to three members of staff wanting an answer whilst shouting across the bar. Once the remaining guests turned up, the staff were again pushing for the orders. We had ordered pigs in blankets and stuffing for the table to share alongside the roasts. When the food came out it was disgusting. The meat was cold, vegetables had come out the microwave, the pigs in blankets were still frozen and the stuffing was like eating dog food. The roasts were over £20 a head and you got 2 potatoes a tiny amount of meat and inedible vegetables. Whilst already nearly waiting over an hour for our meals. One of the people in our group only got their meal once everyone else had finished theirs. (Not that they were missing out on much) There was no organisation with the staff team and no apology given. Whilst this was happening the team were apologising to other tables because food had been dropped on the floor and there was no more desserts. The overall experience was very disappointing and I would not recommend. If you want a Sunday Roast don’t bother getting it from this dump unless you enjoy frozen food still frozen and slop on a plate.

We have been a number of time tor lunch and always been happy. Not sure what happened today We were there at 12.30 so no way should they have sold out of food but we were immediately advised no beef pie (on special menu) no fish and chips and no chicken burger. This left little on the menu we fancied. Two of us had burger. One was burnt and the other was cold. Two others had ham and eggs and they must have been running out of ham as very meagre portion. The chips were also undercooked. On the whole a very disappointing meal and we will not be rushing back. Shame as in the past had good meals On the Plus side very good customer service from the staff

The sportsman’s used to be wonderful friendly local pub, but I hasten to say over the last year or so has turned into something slightly above its station when it comes pricing what it has to offer, which is basically frozen food with plastic sauce sachets. If they concentrated on creating warm customer service and serving good homemade food (it used to) than skimming locals to park their car they might survive the coming year or so. Won’t be returning.

I have never written a bad review in my life, but I feel this was necessary to warn others. I took my husband here for a birthday lunch with lots of my closest friends. Two servers were lovely, however the older gentleman who served us made some outwardly homophobic comments. Even stooping to saying "Don't worry, you don't look like one of those", to one of our friends, and mocking a fellow customer for "having a grey handbag". The confidence this server felt to say this to customers was nothing short of astounding and made us all feel extremely uncomfortable every time he was in the area. This is 100% completely unacceptable behaviour. Having chosen a pub to bring my friends from out of town to which I have been to and enjoyed multiple times, I left feeling incredibly upset that I had put them through this. Upon leaving I mentioned the comments to a female server, who also seemed mortified. At the end of it all, my husband's birthday lunch was left completely ruined as I spent the entire meal trying to play happy and distract everyone and myself from the awkward environment. It would be great to receive a reply on what owners intend to do about the situation. We visited on the 8th December in early afternoon.

The sportsman has had the same menu for at least 2 years,it’s beggars belief and it’s the old chefs menu. They really don’t know what there doing in that place. The roast dinner,I wouldn’t serve that to a dog. There only and main concern in that place is the locals who only drink, don’t upset them or your won’t have a business at all. But if you’re into a bit of swinging that’s your place, locals are up for anything including the owner.

We just had a large family birthday lunch including kids and dogs at The Sportsman which was a resounding success. Whilst not a private room as such, we were able to have a large curtained off area to ourselves which worked very well. Unsurprisingly we had followed reviews of the food so came prepared to be critical, however the food - which was pre-ordered due to the numbers - was perfect in all respects with Lisa and her staff working hard to ensure the lunch was a success. We have no hesitation in recommending others to use the pub as we did. Should we dig deep to find a negative, whilst a pub cannot be all things to everyone, for a lot of people these days coffee is a lifestyle and they expect a greater choice than instant or filter.

A lovely location for dog walking and the pub is very dog orientated. We stopped for a quick drink on the terrace to enjoy the late afternoon sunshine. The terrace was set up with cushions and blankets, which was very welcoming. However, a pint of beer and a large white wine cost us £19.60 making this pub more expensive than any other local pub we've tried recently. In fact, it cost more than the equivalent round of drinks in Covent Garden.

Have used this pub on many occasions and always enjoy the remote location. Unfortunately the once cosy pub has lost its charm, the service is slow… very slow. The food was disappointing, the bar service slow. it seemed more important to have a conversation amongst themselves than serve… And let’s not forget the car park, if you don’t register your car you are kindly reminded with a heavy fine 2 weeks later…. But no mention of having to register your car when you are being served….. Disappointing, a once nice pub is being run down… it doesn’t have passing trade, most are walkers and cyclists… and you need to know this pub exists… an expensive meal and drink.

Like the previous post I’ve just been fined for using the car park. I’ve been so many times before to this pub and never had a problem. The sign is badly worded as is suggests that only walkers need to pay or maybe something has changed. I was in the beer garden with my family spending money and still got fined. I’m not happy and won’t be returning. This has never happened before so don’t know why I’ve been fined now.

Will never return due to the £100 parking fine I received when I visited. My partner and I completely missed any signage relating to a need to register. As others have said, you just don't expect to have to pay/register to use a pub car park and therefore did not check for signs. My advice to management is to stop this practice and just put a sign up saying it is for the use of customers only.

Headed to this pub/restaurant as it was a family memory heading here after work. Either the staff or management has changed as it was nothing to what I remembered it was. First off, the parking situation is really dangerous and unsafe. It's a tight blind corner into the parking lot which you have to walk round to get to the front of the pub, our dog nearly got ran over due to someone driving round (not fast but due to how tight it was they nearly hit us/our dog) The pub itself looked dark, sad and grungy. Not what I remembered it to be. The staff seemed like they didn't want to be there, the lady who served us asked us to repeat our order 4 times (the pub was quiet and almost empty) which I found a bit embarrassing, either she was new or don't know what she was doing. The food was nothing to write home about, the gammon was cold and stringy, the chips had black bits all over them (poor quality potatoes), I can't comment on family members food however they said they weren't very impressed. The foods were a bit expensive for what we received and the drinks were very low quality. We ordered a coke and it was just wishy washy, when the server tried it they said there was nearly no syrup in there, and she said "sorry" and walked away, no refund, no new drink or anything, left a sour taste in our mouth. Would not recommend eating here and would encourage trying somewhere else.

My friend and I visited the Sportmans pub for the first time recently. On first impression it was well presented along with the staff being very welcoming and attentive. We both ordered the roast chicken and when it came out, I must admit for the price you pay, we were very disappointed. When speaking with the staff, it was apparent concerns about the roast’s portions had been a frequent issue raised by customers. The staff were apologetic but considering this might be a frequent complaint, perhaps it should be reviewed to aid customers satisfaction.

This is a pub I've known for 40+ years and when visited has always been pretty good. Staff on this occasion were very friendly and helpful but fear the food was a major disappointment. At nearly £20 for a salad we were expecting something a bit special. The Orange and Goats Cheese was not. No frisee lettuce, barely noticeable orange and the goats cheese was just a few tiny pellets. In fact it peppers and onions predominated the dish. I would be lying if the mustard dressing had much flavour either. A real shame and this dish needs a lot of attention.

I used to come to this pub regularly but this was my first visit in 5 years, since moving house. It’s a beautiful pub, great location, perfect if you have a dog. I went with my husband and we met friends there. The food though was not up to the standard it has been previously. I ordered slow cooked ribs. You’d think being slow cooked the meat would fall off the bone, but they were tough and chewy. Nor did they come with chips. I think they were supposed to but instead I got salad. Who the hell wants salad with ribs? I ordered apple crumble for desert. It was tasteless. The apples were obviously not the best and there was no hint of cloves or cinnamon. Overall disappointing on the food choices, for me anyway.

The lovely little country pub is an absolute delight! Lovely staff large garden and dog friendly. My family and I have been visiting this pub for the past 6 years and have never had an issues. After reading the 2 bad recent reviews left on here I would like to say that I was sat at the table next to the bar when the customers were extremely rude to the “manageress” (she was actually the owner). To the point the lovely lady customer called her a b*itch and told her to wipe the smug look off her face, but much for a meal not arriving. The landlady was nothing but polite & pleasant. Very disappointing! Shame as its usually good, but not today. Could list the problems we had with the food and service, but suffice to say we won't be recommending this anymore. To add to my previous review from a previous visit. We gave The Sportsman another chance today. Unfortunately it was far worse than last time. Waited a long time at the bar to be served drinks. Finally gave the order to a young barmaid, then she disappeared. A considerable time later when she reappeared i asked her "What is happening with our drink order"? Seems not only is she not allowed to serve drinks but also forgot to pass it on to someone else who can serve. Then we ordered our food (for 4 people) went outside to wait. Eventually 3 out of 4 meals arrived (no cutlery or instructions that we need to collect it ourselves) It was apparent the 4th meal was not going to arrive . Asked a waitress about the missing meal, she said she'd check for us, but she didnt come back. Eventually we went in to check ourselves. The order had registered on the pub pc. Just not put through for delivery. Manageress so rude and blamed it on that we had booked a table for inside but had changed to sitting outside. Seriously???? It was a very disappointing experience and we won't be giving them a third chance. Got a refund for the elusive meal and was glad to leave.

Beautiful surroundings to take your dogs for a walk. As for the pub service and staff attitude extremely poor. We booked for 4 people to have a meal, but because we chose to eat outside and they served only 3 of the meals ordered and completely forgot the 4th, had to ask for knives and forks, and remind them that we ordered drinks. Apparently it was our fault because we chose to sit outside instead of inside. To be fair we have visited the pub on many occasions in the hope things would improve, unfortunately that isn't the case. In fact in my opinion it's got worse.

The location is beautiful. I can imagine how lovely it would be in summer where you can enjoy drinks outside and watch all the beautiful dogs returning from their walks. The service was great and the staff very attentive. There is ample parking outside which you would have to pay, not sure if you can be reimbursed though! The negative was the food... we ordered sticky chicken, not sure why we got fried chicken? It was really hard to chew as you can see from the pictures. My mother and I had scampi, the scampi was watery so it was straight from the freezer and smelled very fishy .... the tartar sauce was awful, it tasted more like a mustard sauce. The pie was nothing like what we had a few years ago at our first visit to this pub. Since my daughter did not want mayo with her burger, it was bland and dry. I am not sure whether the cook is new, but he or she is not that good in the kitchen sadly. Also at one point I thought we were going to suffocate from smoke inhalation due to a wet logs with my mum suffering from COPD and my daughter from asthma. Would we recommend this place, yet but not for food.

Walked dogs, and was amazed to see a dog cleaning facility on our return in the car park. Had meal and drinks. Absolutely superb. Staff were fantastic, food magnificent and the friendly atmosphere was incredible. Will definitely return and recommend. Thank you.

Food good but £9 for a white wine spritzer is a bad joke

Hot chocolate was great! Burgers (chicken and halloumi) dry and not too tasty, seafood pasta not good. If looking for a pub to take the dogs and have a drink - this is a great spot, very relaxed. If looking for nice food, avoid, there are plenty of better pubs in the area.

Disappointed on Friday. Fish and chips were had but there was more batter than fish and it was very small. Chips filled one plate but another had much less. Peas were not cooked enough. One meal was the pie but this was just a very small slice , considering the price this was not value for money. The crumble for pudding was apple and berries but didn't see a berry, also the apple was not fresh but appeared to be in a syrup, the crumble tasted hard and strange. All in all no one really enjoyed it . previous meals have been much better. Will not be returning anytime soon

What a Gem - thank you Brit Stops! Lovely friendly, informal ‘real’ pub. Food was delicious, and realistically priced. Owner and staff very friendly and welcoming, as were the clientele. We will return. A joy to find such a lovely, well run establishment. You deserve success!

Food not bad at all but staff not that helpful, also presume if you are using car pub you didn't have to pay for car park (my bad) but got £100 fine for my trouble. Sat outside to eat with grand daughter, furniture tired and dirty.

Once again, I failed to finish the childrens roat beef. Cannot imagine the size of the adult potions. Always good service and the food is knock out.

Great atmosphere, friendly and engaging staff and fabulous food. What more would you want for your Sunday lunch. Best pub around here, without a doubt.

Enjoyable and good value lunch served by attentive staff. Overheard other diners complimenting the food, so we were not alone in this. Whatever caused the poor reviews earlier appears to have been addressed by the pub, which is commendable. We would certainly consider lunch here again

What a wonderful traditional Sunday Lunch we had. We booked at the last minute and the manager explained we could only have the table until 2pm. we did have to move for our desserts but the staff were really helpful, even gave free ice cream to our child. We will definitely be back

Had a lovely lunch at the Sportsman today with a good mix from their tapas menu - really tasty and generous portions too at a good price. What really made it though were the staff who took the time to chat to us as if we were locals and made us feel really welcome ....a pleasant change from some of the more in and out type of pubs.

We were a party of four and had requested a "quiet table" but were shown to a table in the main bar area where "music" was blasting out. We were then offered a table in a tiny, cold area on the other side of the bar with metal and plastic chairs, one broken. We opted for only main courses, which were all served on dessert size plates. Shrinkflation? The food was unremarkable, the scampi for two orders hard to find amidst the batter. Did it and the chips come straight from Brake Brothers or similar? Ham, egg and chips was served with a massive portion of flaccid salad. A "fry-up" with salad, really? The only coffee available was filter and there was a long wait for it as the machine had to be switched on. No brown sugar, just white in small packets. Service was OK, but no prizes.

Had a very disappointing lunch at the Sportsman…not down to the food (which was reasonable) but the appalling service we received. We had booked a table for 8 people (4 adults and 4 young children) at 12pm knowing we would have to be finished by 2pm. Not a problem. At 1.35pm our waitress reminded us that the table was booked for 2pm, we’d ordered puddings which were due out imminently so would be finished by 2. A few minutes later, another member of staff came over and asked if we could move to another table. I said we’d be finished by 2 but she said it would be a great help to her so we agreed. We packed all our stuff up and loitered waiting to be shown our new table. Had to go and ask to find out which table to move to….a tall bar table with 6 high seats, obviously not suitable for young children and not enough seats for us all. Our pudding arrived and we had to ask for an extra seat, our youngest guest had to sit on a lap as a high chair would have meant she wasn’t at table height with us all. By now we hadn’t received an apology or had it been acknowledged how disgruntled we were. We watched our old table be cleared and set up for the next customers within 5 minutes and it then sat empty for 25minutes. Meanwhile whist one of our children was trying to get off the bar stool a glass was knocked off. The staff didn’t even check if everything was ok, just muttered amongst themselves, one rolled their eyes to another and they said they’d have to hoover it up once we’d left. Meanwhile other customers walked through the broken glass (including dogs). We were in disbelief! Both the adults and children in our party had been polite / well behaved (unlike the dogs on the table behind us as we were eating!) and we couldn’t quite believe we were being treated so rudely. We felt like the staff then avoided us so we approached them for the bill. It arrived with still yet no apology or acknowledgment of what had happened. I said we won’t be paying the service charge due to the inconvenience caused and the way our visit had ended. Still no apology, just accepted my request. We would have had a lovely lunch had it not been for the way we were treated for the last half an hour. We did them a favour by moving table yet we were made to feel like we had done something wrong. We will not be returning and will not be recommending. The staff need more training in customer service!

Poor food, dreadful service. Roast chicken was overcooked & dry, plate mostly filled with peas, potatoes and gravy. Sausages were very, very overcooked so that they were dried out and tough - even the kids wouldn't eat them. The waitress was rude, did the absolute bare minimum and avoided engaging with customers. This place is fine for a post-walk drink but do yourself a favour and avoid wasting your money eating here.

The New York bagel was banging 😋 Lovely friendly staff and a really nice menu. Maybe a tad expensive for something that comes on a little cardboard tray with no sides, when eating in, but tasty none the less.

The place was lovely and the service was excellent, but I received so little food for what I paid, which was like £25+ for a single piece of chicken and some veg. Like where is the rest of it? Yes, it tasted amazing and I'm sure the point of it was quality over quantity, but I was still hungry and had to eat again when I got home. Didn't feel like I got my money's worth when I paid for a meal and received lunch.

I visited here last Friday and was thoroughly impressed by the quality of the food—each dish was a testament to the chef's skill and dedication. Eager to experience it again, I returned this evening, only to be disheartened by the limited selection of just two beverages on tap, which seemed particularly unorganised for a bank holiday weekend. This must be incredibly frustrating for the chef, whose dishes deserve a more supportive environment. It's evident that the culinary excellence is being undermined by a lack of organisation and attention to detail in the front-of-house. With improved service and a more comprehensive beverage offering, this pub has the potential to be a standout for the area. Ironic a pub without beer...

Wonderful lunch at an amazing price. We were a party of six. We had two courses with steak and roast dinner being the most popular choices. All were delicious. The bill for two courses, drinks including service was less than £30 a head. We were served by Holly who was perfect.

Website and outside opening times require updating, arrived at 1:15pm to be fobbed off with rude gesture by a member of staff inside. When putting 2 fingers up (possibly to indicate either ‘i’ll be with you in 2 minutes’ or ‘we open at 2’, please make sure you point your fingers the correct way round. This did not leave a friendly tone.
