We ordered Cod Fillet, Mussels and Chicken Cod Fillet tastes okay, The mussels were fresh and flavorful but the chicken breast was rather tough and lacked the tender Pistachio Soufflé was airy, but the pistachio flavor was somewhat subtle and lacked the depth I had hoped for.

10/10 service from Dan. Food was incredible.

This is the second time in as many months that the food here is disappointing. We popped in yesterday for a little treat and leave the house. The french onion soup started was nuclear hot, wasn't tasty at all, it tasted burnt and the cheese and bread on top were black, we left it. The pork main dish was average with the dauphinoise potatoes being tasteless. The chips we ordered were cold and we had to send them back, we would not normaly send food back but they couldn't even get the chips right. We decided not to bother with dessert because we didn't have much hope for a good dish. All in all it was a shame,a meal out isn't cheap and it's not good when you can eat a better meal at home. It wasn't a busy night so it's no excuse, the kitchen was just failing. Why didn't I complain at the time? Simply because I didn't want to upset the person with me who needed a break and a nice time. A similar thing happened last month when a dish had to be sent back because they were burnt on top and overcooked. Extra star for the waiter who was very nice.

Very busy restaurant, lucky to find parking place, one hour wait for main course, good food but, even though “bottomless”, not enough gravy! Overall a very enjoyable lunch despite a few minor flaws

I have eaten here before and enjoyed the meals…usually very good quality. Today I had the haddock risotto from the set menu. It was a huge disappointment. There was no haddock to be seen, and more importantly, tasted. In fact I found the meal lacking in taste, consisting of rice and a poached egg. I shared my disappointment with the waiter.

Regular visiters and this visit did not dissapoint. Usual high standard of food and always great service. Justas shame eating out is becomming so expensive, however their meal deals are always very welcome.

A large party is always going to come with some issues. I always say it's how the issues are dealt with and here they couldn't have been bettered. James was an absolute star and a credit to the pub. He was the right side of cheeky, professional and friendly all wrapped up in one. Despite an obviously busy evening (50% off mains and a Friday night) he made you feel you were his only table and that nothing was too much trouble. The cheese soufflé starter is amazing.

Great food, lovely attentive staff… already booked for Sunday lunch

A return visit. I loved the smoked rib eye pork which was more like ham and we had the cheese soufflé in place of a pudding. Delicious! Cathy and Magdalena were lovely friendly, professional waitresses . I would definitely recommend this restaurant. Easy parking and it will be lovely when we can eat outside when the warm weather returns.

Great new menu, plenty of variety and each dish we had (party of 6) was great - tasty, nicely presented and well priced. The service is always excellent, and when the restaurant is busy.

Loved it! Couldn’t fault it. The atmosphere is great, buzzing on a Saturday lunch, my food was nice - I was very nicely surprised that the fajitas come with 4 wraps and a very generous portion of meat and vegetables. The waffle is a must try! Cannot wait to go back.

The Black Horse has a January special offer - 50% off main meals providing you order two courses. The restaurant was packed, and although service was slightly slow, I could not fault it any way and our waitress was delightful. I ordered the hake which was beautifully cooked although it did not come with vegetables - I was pleased our waitress informed me of this or I would have been disappointed. I ordered the cabbage as a side dish and it was very tasty. Deserts didn't disappoint. The pistachio soufflé was interesting served with chocolate ice cream. Nice flavours - I can recommend! Presentation very good. Pleasant ambience and a warm buzz.

After being underwhelmed last month with the food, we returned as our dining partners had booked. Yet again the food was below par in places. The kitchen seems to focus on presentation (good) over flavour. Watery, bland soup made us think they were running short so watered it down. One of our main courses was taken off the bill as the halloumi was rock hard. At least the desserts were good so partially redeemed. Could do better.

Eaten here a few times before and had always had a really good experience both with food and service. We visited yesterday for dinner and found the service to be very poor…..waiting over 40mins for our drinks to arrive (our starters came first). The waiter then made some excuse about having to crush ice. The smaller of the two managers was really good and apologised (we’ve always found him to be very professional and friendly). The waiter continued to be rather useless so we asked him to remove the service charge from the bill. The taller of the two managers then came to ask why we weren’t happy. We explained and rather than just apologise and owning it he then became very defensive, saying the waiter was a great guy, was in training (this hadn’t been previously explained and no one seemed to be training him), said he was a great bar man and a load of other excuses. A simple apology would have been sufficient. We weren’t asking for anything other than the service charge (which is optional) to be removed. Disappointed!!! Wondering if this manager is staying?

Nice food. Relaxed, staff really helpful and friendly. Donna was great. Here today for training but wouldn’t know. She was training. If I owed a pub I would employ James, Young, enthusiastic, and a really friendly guy

We had a great meal last night for my sister's birthday. Delicious food, great discount offer, lovely staff, great service and a lovely atmosphere, but also not too noisy which is great for our parents. Will definitely be back and recommend to friends.

Excellent place to eat. Greeted as soon as we walked in the door, service was prompt without being rushed, table staff were friendly and efficient. The food was first class and beautifully presented. Highly recommended.

We have visited this restaurant twice in the past and been impressed. Tonight’s experience was poor, but entertaining. I ordered the blue cheese and walnut salad, described as ‘packing a punch’. I had one walnut crunched up and about 20g of cheese with a handful of leaves, see picture. Other orders included a burger, which was decent, and the pie which was a small portion. For dessert, the crumble was stewed apple with a sprinkle of crumble on top. Has this restaurant changed hands? Some of the courses were so daft it was funny. Highlight: the cute cat that greeted us in the porch, we’re hoping her meals are a bit more substantial.

An amazing place but I asked for a well done steak and it came out completely burnt and dry. I should’ve sent it back. Surely a difference between well done and fully burnt. I couldn’t even taste it as it was so cromated. The chips were nice and pudding . A wonderful service otherwise

We had a lovely meal here yesterday. The cheese souffle was again excellent. My husband loved his beef roast and I thoroughly enjoyed my grilled trout.

I was meeting friend and our table was in a nice alcove from the rest of the hustle and bustle of the restaurant. I am a coeliac and the head waiter was very helpful and knowledgeable about my condition. I was made to feel welcome and my needs very well accommodates. I have to say the web site was also helpful for me to decide on what I could have. The food was very good and a nice selection. When we had our deserts one of them arrived in error but the waiting staff were very good at sorting out the problem and we eventually ended up with the correct deserts. I recommend this restaurant and it was an ideal place when meeting friends. There is plenty of parking.

We were 4 people all ate the blackboard menus all very good 3 chose sausage casserole 1 chose pheasant casserole 2 had red fruit crumble 2 had butterscotch sponge all delicious.

A very delicious roast with the family and they're super generous with the roast potatoes. The only damper on the meal was the service. Two mistakes with the ordering (ice cream on the apple crumble when I asked for custard) and the same for my wife but on a different pudding).

The menu broadcasts the pub chains sustainability regime. But it doesn't say its achieving it with overpriced tiny portions

The hospitality was warm and welcoming and we felt like appreciated guests. The server built a natural rapport and was attentive. He was polite and genuinely friendly throughout, which greatly added to the experience. The food was utterly delicious, the mussels were excellent quality and extremely fresh, the white wine sauce was perfect with a creamy but subtle wine taste. Perfectly seasoned, crispy fries. The pub is beautiful a warm, comfortable and friendly environment. I will spread the word and return again soon!

We first came here 18 years ago and it has improved with age! Lovely welcome, friendly staff and delicious food from an extensive menu including a great selection of Indian dishes. Easy to park and ideal for a meal if you have a hotel stay the night before a flight from Gatwick. Lovely gardens too.

This is a truly wonderful restaurant pub, eating inside or out in the garden (weather permitting). I have visited several times recently with my disabled friend and the staff are always helpful and accommodating when we need to get her wheelchair under the table so she can reach her plate. They also have put up with a couple of cancellations when my friend has had a bad day and is too tired. The food is outstanding. We have enjoyed the Dressed Devon Crab on the seasonal menu, amongst other choices. My friend's favourite dessert is the Basque Cheese cake. Check out their menus online. Back again, we love it here. The staff are great, as is the food. It's a different menu now but we both found some delicious options.

Very good food at a reasonable price. Had excellent trout and Hake dishes on first visit and then Sunday Roast. Both times were excellent. Glad we live only 8 minutes away!

Lovely service - attentive & friendly. The Sunday roast was the best pub roast we’ve had. The beef is insane and all the veg/potatoes/yorkies are delicious and bottomless! We will definitely be back! Also dog friendly which is a bonus!

Dinner for four - Saturday 21 September 2024 Here is a venue which gives much pleasure to thousands every year. Unfortunately our experience ultimately left a bad taste. Our welcome and subsequent service from staff was great. The atmosphere of a packed Black Horse on a Saturday evening might challenge those seeking a quieter night's dining. No problem for us - we are happy to enjoy ourselves along with other people enjoying themselves! The unacceptable element arrives with the food. This is essentially pub grub and ingredients are not necessarily going to be the very finest. Meat cuts and fish are certainly medium quality at best but sympathetic and skilful cooking can compensate for this. Sadly those who Heartwood Inns describe as 'chefs' showed little understanding of their task. Pork belly suffered from the lack of finish which would have balanced out what was simply overpowering fattiness. My chalk stream trout was a horrible affair. Instead of a thin, light crust from pan frying, the surface of the fish had been transformed into hard, jagged shards. Like an attack of multiple bones from a badly filleted fish. Overcooked, chewy prawns and a sirloin steak which needed longer resting completed the damning evidence of a kitchen team who don't particularly care. When part of the hospitality on offer relies heavily on presenting a decent eating experience, it should be a given that attention to detail and consistency are involved. The Black Horse kitchen have a lot of catching up to do. Our visit tallies closely with the summary created by AI, based on recent reviews. No, we didn't complain to anyone on the night. It seemed pointless. Previous reviews have informed the venue of their shortcomings but management appears happy to provide second best. Our infrequent visits over years are very likely to end completely now.

I haven't had such poor service for a long time. 20 minutes before we were asked for our order. The staff had no spacial awareness. People were waiting for service all around us. Orders to be taken, tables to be cleared, more drinks to be offered. The staff were around but just weren't looking at their customers needs. We didn't wait for a dessert as it would have taken too long. We even had to get up and go to the till to pay the bill. Excuses about shortage of staff but they were there, just not looking around.

Sunday roast! Veg too undercooked for me. Very skimpy on gravy, custard. No apple sauce? Sooo loud due to low ceilings. Think you cater more for young families so put off going again

Just wanted to share how attentive the manager was tonight. Above and beyond, a rare breed.

Firstly the staff were GREAT!,helpful, friendly,and attentive. The only disappointment was the food, Although the mechanics of the dishes worked. i.e. cooking times and presentation, I really felt that the chefs heart was not in it, lack of seasoning and care making a quite bland result,However, It does beg the question as to wether or not the products are bought in or produced on site? I do accept that from an operational point of view some products need to be outsourced if that is the case then I feel that your supplier needs to be reviewed

We had a lovely time last night. The food was cooked perfectly and all 8 of us were served together. Waiting staff were friendly. We all had a lovely time and will definitely be back.

Brought my friend for lunch here. The staff were a delight and the manager well he went above and beyond to make sure our time here was made perfect. Which it was. Choc and orange moose... check it out. 😍 Thank you so much. We will be back for the next season menu. Most definitely recommend

Food was good, but only having vegan (fake) custard and no actual custard available was a big minus point, I object to only having ultra processed junk food as the only offering available to cater to the minority. Not worth a return visit.

We have not been here for awhile and came for a mid week lunch. The service was absolutely excellent. But what let it down was the food. It’s all kind of average. We had a mixture of plates between us but nothing that great. And not inexpensive. It’s a shame because it has a lovely setting.

You need 3 courses if you don't want to go home hungry. Mains are very small, tasty but need much more to be value for money. Service leaves a lot to be desired, not offered the 2 for 1 drinks as it was 5.30. The gin and tonic never arrived before the food, gave up and ordered wine, only 2 people so hardly difficult. Very underwhelming, expensive for what we had, wouldn't go back

I visited on the spur of the moment and was made to feel very welcome. There is a good selection of food on the menu most of which is well above your normal pub grub. The Chick pea and Tomato starter and the sea bream and ratatouille were both exquisite. Service and surroundings match the great food.

Went here for roast dinner with 2 couples and 2 babies. The staff were attentive and friendly, and quickly sorted out a high chair for one of the babies. The mains arrived quickly and the roast beef was lovely and tender, with a decent sized portion. Free refills on Yorkshires, roasties and gravy was a great addition - although the gravy was a touch watery (my only complaint!). The desserts were excellent too, a lovely soft Basque cheesecake and a decadent chocolate torte which was similar to a gooey brownie. We weren't sure the lime caramel would work alongside it, but it was banging. A lovely Sunday lunch.

Incredibly disappointed in our experience here on a Saturday late afternoon. Ordered the chalkstream trout which tasted like a compost heap. Appreciate trout can be earthy, but this was overpowering, and ruined the dish. Skin could have been crispier to improve overall taste. Potatoes were the saving grace of the dish, and very nice. Likely it would have been more pleasant had I requested no watercress sauce, as it was particularly uninspired and if the fish is good (which this wasn’t), you shouldn’t need that much — it’s almost souplike. I had requested that my food didn’t have any butter on it — and was told that it was pre prepared buttered (even my sourdough came drenched in butter). I’m not a fan of the taste, so it made my green beans pretty unpalatable. Given they were otherwise perfectly cooked, I struggle to understand why it was so impossible to leave off the butter. Table service was pretty appalling and slow after we were initially seated by a pleasant and friendly host. After this, the staff seemed totally disinterested and took a long time to get our orders, and didn’t clear our table of finished plates/ dishes. The family next to our table left after paying their bill with a full table of plates and glasses (even after requesting that the table be cleared), complaining loudly about the lack of service due to being that it is included on the bill. All in all, very disappointed. Not the standard we are used to in what is usually a great spot. UPDATE: emailed management TWICE in regards to their response with no reply.

Excellent Sunday roast. I highly recommend the beef roast. Unlimited Yorkshire puddings and potatoes is a bonus.

Scotch Egg was a delight. Sausage and mash was delicious. You will need all 3 courses if you're hungry though.

Fantastic service with great food. The roast dinner was really well done and bottomless roast potatoes and Yorkshire was an added bonus. We sat outside under a shaded area so it was a lovely atmosphere on a hot day. Highly recommended and will visit again

A beautiful restaurant with good service throughout the evening. The food is excellent, and the desserts are delicious. Outside, there are tables set up for all year round. The Black Horse Pub has a large carpark and is also wheel chair friendy.

Atmosphere was great, with a live band on Saturday. Unfortunately the service and the food quality were pretty mediocre. And the whole experience was a bit odd. We were sat down and given drinks and then all the staff disappeared for 10 minutes for a staff meeting (at 6pm on a Saturday?). We had wanted to go and try something new, but unfortunately the menu was very similar to the cricketers in Cobham ( not surprisingly as they are part of the same group) and as a result the menu felt like it had been borrowed rather than owned. We had the beetroot terrine, but it came with no bread/biscuit accompaniment. The duck leg was too salty and the steak was overdone. It was all ok, just not worth the £85.

It was our first visit to the Black Horse. We met friends for an early dinner on a Thursday. There was a very welcoming atmosphere with friendly staff. The pub was very busy. Well balanced, imaginative menu. The food was beautifully presented and very tasty. When our bill came, we had been wrongly charged for some wine, but this was very quickly sorted out by the staff when we pointed it out. The service was a little slow at times, but as I said the pub was very busy, and rightly so. We would definitely return and recommend to others.

Five of us dining - an annual outing for friends with April birthdays.. the high standards haven’t slipped at all over the years. Attentive staff, and the food is always top notch. Atmosphere lacking because not many diners/drinkers on a Monday evening which is a shame because it really is a fantastic venue and a huge garden for the warmer weather. Our apologies to the staff - perhaps keeping them up as we left quite late. Definitely recommend

Nothing wrong with the food, but portions have shrunk since the last visit and prices haven’t. The crab and sweetcorn bites are literally one bite; three are served at over £2 per bite is outrageous. Similarly, a tiny piece of trout fillet and a couple of tablespoons of crushed potato at nearly £19, left me hungry and a bit irritated. Same with my husband, who pronounced his gammon “ok”. Add to that a shared bottle of wine, nearly £9 for a dessert, £6 for ice-cream (we had two starters and two desserts between 4) and you very quickly and up with a bill for over £150. Sorry but the sunny service doesn’t make up for poor VFM, we won’t rush back.

Went for a birthday celebration with 12 people in a Friday eve. Great food (excellent cheese souffle starter). Good atmosphere (although the lighting is quite bright and harsh) and good service.

Lucy, our waitress, made our evening! It’s so nice to have someone who genuinely loves their job and wants to help. She was knowledgeable about the new menu, helpful, friendly and very attentive. She is an absolute asset to the business!

Stood at the bar for minute before being noticed. Overheard the (assumed) manager discussing potential EHO visit with bar staff. Not what you should be hearing. Apparently it's ok to keep the "should be refrigerated olives" out on the bar unless there is a visit due.... just beware My beer tasted ok though, but then, no olives

Had a dinner for 2 here. Food fantastic, service excellent, presentation excellent and atmosphere very. But OMG the price is extortionate. £14 for a glass of sauvingon Blanc, fish and chips £22 . I had for main sausage and mash, 2 sausages, mashed potato and a spoon of onion £16. Would I go back there 'yes' but not in a rush

I had a delicious meal at The Black Horse with friends and family. I can highly recommend. The service was good our waiter was delightful. He was chatty and very helpful with checking out allergy information for one of our party. I will definitely be coming back.

I've only given 1* overall as the prices were far too high for a very small amount of food. I eat in high end restaurants in London at similar prices, but we get a lot more for our money. A pleasant evening celebrating a birthday, but was marred by the price v's quantity. Such a shame.

Food was overly priced for what I had. Steak pie had 2 small pieces of steak, no veg, just a small bit of mash. My husband had cod and chips, not much cod, and mushy peas didn't taste good. Staff were friendly, and the place looked great. Seating was far enough apart to be private
