First visit here for lunch whilst en route to Winkworth Arboretum. Left with very mixed feelings. It's in a nice location with attractive interior decor but... Completely agree with other reviews regarding staff. The girl on the till came to take our order about 3 seconds after we'd sat down; she didn't seem to have a clue how to use the tablet for orders and spent most of her time standing around doing nothing whilst the guy in the kitchen did all the work. As a result we ended up having to wait ages for our food. We ordered quiche + 2 salads and sausage roll + 2 salads. The food was ok but charging £12 for that is outrageous! And to make matters worse, they allow dogs inside and my lunch was ruined by 3 tiny, stinky dogs arriving at the table behind me. In my view, dogs should not be allowed inside where people are eating - it is so unhygienic. Leave them outside! There are better, cheaper cafes around so I suggest you seek them out.

A lovely setting in the old forge with shabby chic decor. The walls are adorned with gifts to purchase which are always fun to look at whilst waiting for friends to arrive. Atmosphere is very relaxed and there is no rush to leave. Occasionally there is a bit of lack of attention to detail eg a friend was recently served a slightly burnt almond croissant. The prices are a bit toppy so one should be able to expect well presented food and had it not been for this I would have given 5/5. The cakes are gorgeous. Overall this is such a delightful place for coffee and cake with friends in a quaint village setting.

With a small limited menu you’d think it wouldn’t be that tricky to stock the ingredients needed for a sandwich, apparently it is !! No smoked Salmon, no avocado? Maybe pop to the shops?? The chef was so miserable we felt really uncomfortable with the atmosphere. Never been my favourite place and definitely not inclined to go back. Make the extra journey into Cranleigh if you can!

We popped into the Speckledy Hen because we keep pet hens and liked the sound of the name! We found out about it when visiting the sister establishment, the Dabbling Duck, at Shere. We had a light lunch (savoury veggie bagel with griddled halloumi and salad, and cheese on toast with leaves) and a pot of tea for two. The service (when seated) was prompt and polite, the food and drink was extremely tasty and the portions larger than we expected (e.g. the cheese on toast was a lovely large oval slice of sourdough type bread). The loo was clean and easily accessible. The only real downside is that parking is a bit difficult when they are busy, so you may have to park some distance away. As they also run a deli from the same site there may be times when the service is slower, we had to wait to be seated while someone had made a large order - but this is understandable for a small, popular concern. If you do visit the Speckledy Hen, it is worth taking the time to take a walk around the village green and have a look at the duck pond. We were too full for one of the delicious looking cakes but hope to sample these next time!

Despite meeting waitress at the door, took some time for her to take my order. Coffee and bacon sandwich on brown bread........No brown so settled for white. Coffee was nice, sandwich modest. Lot of noise from the "chattering clases" filled the air. When at the till to pay, immediately had tablet thrust under my nose "Discretionary tip?" 10, 15 or 20%.....more interested in taking what cash they could than providing a good service. Shame, nice location and building, service just not up to standard of other cafe's in this lovely area of Surrey.

As a freelance journalist I have written a very positive and glowing review for this cafe in the past for the website Epic Road Rides; having visitied it many times in the past: however all this has changed: the service today bored on the "outrageously rude"Arrived at 11:25 am with two friends on bikes to find no customers inside: but it was sunny so we chose to sit outside, we cleared the plates and coffee cups that had been left and took them in: no word of thanks. We were asked what we wanted to eat: to which I said probably the American pancakes and fruit. Ans: sorry we only serve that on a Saturday. Ok can we have a look at the menus please? - ans: because it is now 11:30 we are on the lunch menus to which I replied please can you ask the chef if he still has any porridge left? the chef comes out and points to a chalk board and says "you see the big letters (in the middle) that says this is a take away menu, to which I reply: I did not ask you to point out the take away menu, I merely asked if you had any porridge left (which by the way is on the breakfast menu but not the lunch menu). I had to step out of the cafe: I cannot deal with people who cannot be civil. Like a good boy I duely ordered from the lunch menu: I ordered a sausage roll that was smaller than the lengh of my index finger.....such a shame. Once we had paid we went to the Dabbling duck in Shere (sister restaurant for coffee and cakes) - would probably suggest you visit the Dabbling Duck in Shere until they get their act together at the Hen.

To start with the best part of our experience: the food was very tasty, if a tad expensive. We had the quiche, sausage roll & chicken & cheese toasted panini & Earl Grey - so far so good. When we visited at lunchtime it was empty, bar one other customer. Despite, the lack of customers we still had to get our own cutlery & water. We did politely ask the waitress, but she said she couldn't get them as she had to do the 'washing up'. We wondered if we should help her out in the kitchen as they obviously were struggling to serve 2 customers. I have mobility problems - running around is not an option. We felt they did not handle the situation well and were not customer focused, especially as the cafe was empty.

All excellent. I'm now doing a Keto diet (low carbs) & was so impressed with the quality and presentation of my breakfast today. Fluffy scrambled eggs, delicious bacon, lovely little rocket salad (with blackberries & raspberries) & avocado sliced like a flower. Oh, and I always love the Americanos. And it was served with lettuce that I can only describe as rabbit food, covered in a yellow dressing. Show me a child that wants to eat that! Bacon was incredibly bland and tasteless (except for the burnt edges), with no butter on the bread. The coffee in the latte tasted burnt and the waitress who brought the food couldn't have been more miserable. Definitely won't ever be going back. A complete rip off.

Very pretty and characterful café in a lovely village.I've given this a generous 4 stars, purely for the super quality of the food, but wasn't really impressed by the service from the chef (owner?)A good welcome from the waitress, and a nice menu. However, the chef was very inflexible to any changes to 'his' dishes. We felt we had to have what he decided, not what the customer wanted. We were there for an hour and a half, but no-one came to ask if all OK or anything else we wanted. So we didn't bother to stay for cakes. On leaving, there was a bowl of sweets on the side near the kitchen. We assumed these were treats for customers. When taking one, we were shouted at by the chef, as apparently these were ingredients for his cakes...!Shame really, I'm hesitant to recommend to friends because of this.

It arrived so nuclear hot I couldn't touch it for 15 minutes, and scalded my mouth. It was supposed to be Minestrone but had so much Tabasco in it is was unidentifiable. My colleague had a panini and asked for the tomato to be taken out and some onion added. We were told gruffly that they didn't have any onion. Really?! The panini looked very bland with a smudge of pesto, some chicken and covered in molten cheese that had gone cold. The interior of the shop looked fantastic, so much attention to detail, every wall and surface had been decorated beautifully in a retro-modern/ great British bake off/ shabby chic style. I had asked when I booked if they could Birthday theme one of the cakes for which they went above and beyond to deliver, presenting my Girlfriend with a personalised cake selection complete with candle, writing and sugar work. The staff were friendly and attentive but did not fuss over us all afternoon, they gave us everything we wanted but left us to get on with it in our little corner of the restaurant.Overall I would give it 10/10 and have been raving about it to everyone I have spoken to since, they have really got it right there and achieved what so many local cafes try but very often fall short. We stopped in for coffee and cake after a disappointing brunch experience elsewhere and it was just what we wanted. We had a latte and hot chocolate between us, a brownie and a gluten free hazelnut and raspberry cake. The brownie was one of the best I have had - crunchy on the outside - gooey in the centre. My husband' s hot chocolate was not hot enough and this was swiftly rectified with an apology and a smile by the server. We were even tempted into purchasing a delightful sugar bowl which was one of the many home type gifts on display for sale. A really pleasant experience and there was no grumpy chef as mentioned in an earlier review. We were out and about in the area exploring and it was miserable weather so we thought we would try this cafe we had read about on here. It is beautifully decorated and the front of the premise has lots of food to buy plus some of the food they serve in the cafe. It was full to the brim of gorgeous gifts and kitchen items which made the place welcoming and friendly. It was quite chilly as the door was open, but I suppose they need to indicate to passers by they are open as there is not much else in Shamley Green to attract attention. They have soya milk and decent coffee regular and decaf so that was the first box ticked. They try with their gluten free options. There were no GF tarts that day and how often they have them I do not know but they had them on the menu so hopefully it as just a one off. There is nothing more annoying for a Coeliac than the promise of GF food and then it rarely being available. There was no GF bread either which was ashamed as lot of their food was bread based for lunch. The soup was GF but opted not too have without bread. Again I don't know if they usually have GF bread or not. The sales were GF and the special superfood salad with Chicken was lovely and a decent portion. For non coeliacs the smoked salmon open sandwich with citrus mayonnaise was, according my mum, was very good. Although she wished she had the sausage roll available from the deli counter with a salad as they did look delicious and at £2.50 not very expensive for a good size sausage roll. I overheard that the tarts had been freshly baked that morning. Lots of yummy cakes too- I took away a GF rocky road which was divine. All in all in was a nice lunch. It cost £30.00 for 2 lunches, 2 hot drinks, a cake and slab of Himalayan salted chocolate. Expensive, but pretty much Surrey prices and you couldn't fault the food. If you are careful what you choose i.e. sandwiches it would be a bit cheaper. All in all, lovely fresh 'home-made' food, in a lovely atmosphere, great staff, allergies had been thought about but I cannot give it 5 stars as it was too chilly and the promise of GF was lacking. I would return.

I visited the Speckledy Hen with 4 other mums, so we took over the room at the back with our 5 babies, buggies etc. It's a lovely café, the menu has a great selection and the service was good. I'll definitely be going back to try some of the gorgeous looking cakes! They also sell a really tempting range of gifts and decorative home pieces so have your purse ready!

Ordered online for 20 minute collection but ended up waiting an hour and 15 minutes, despite consistently asking for updates (and consistently being told "just a few more minutes"). When I finally did get the food home, it was excessively greasy and definitely not worth the wait.

My rump steak roast dinner was cooked to perfection, very efficient service! The menu is so vast, will have to come back to try it all.

We’ve had brunch here on a number of occasions and find that the service / standard of food you get really does swing between very good and quite poor, depending on just who is staffing the venue that day. Our most recent visit was further proof of this when we arrived through the car park entrance at the back for our pre-booked table. A friend tried to join us from the street entrance and found the front door locked, despite it being 10.30 in the morning. My wife’s ordered eggs florentine which was inedible. The spinach was so wet it turned the muffin into a sponge, leaving the plate waterlogged. Interesting to note that a lot of the prices seem to have recently increased too. A shame.
