Absolute stunning old pub 16th century hid away. Couldn't believe it when I walked in what a little gem this place was. As soon as we walked in, the whole atmosphere on the age hits you instantly. Very friendly staff and really pleasant service. We all had the Sunday lunch, and the portions were big and absolutely delicious. Please, if you're in the area, this is a must place to visit, and I will most certainly be back.

Wonderful place to eat. Booking is highly recommended, but you can usually get a table booking early on the same day you plan to visit. The food is excellent, there is a wide choice on the menu and it's all cooked really well. Its delivered to the table in good time, but not so quick that you question the freshness! The service is really friendly, even to us holiday makers, infact we ate there twice in 10 days and the second visit we were treated like they knew us! Eaten here plenty of times before, never had bad service, never had bad food. Free WiFi available throughout which is really useful and the specials board changes really frequently for some excellent options. The atmosphere is always friendly, the tables are clean and in the autumn months they have the log burners on and the dimmed lights makes it feel really cosy and welcoming. Highly recommend, can't wait to go back.

Absolutely brilliant pub and restaurant who made us very welcome even though they were very very busy and we hadn't booked beforehand. Son was camped nearby and we were at Perran Sands. Food was really good and thank goodness they hadn't thoroughly modernised the building. Staff were friendly even though they were rushed off their feet. Thoroughly recommend.

Massive pub with a canteen feel. We had our dog with us, so was quickly ushered to the back room (marquee!). Drink service was very slow, our food came first. All food ‘out of a packet’ and was either fried, grilled or microwaved - so make your choice with this in mind.

What a gorgeous little pub, lovely, welcoming staff and 5 star food! Highly recommended! Lovely garden with children’s play area to! My only regret is that we didn’t try it until the last night of our holiday! Will defo be back when we return next summer.

We have being going to this venue almost every Sunday for the past 20 years. But this time we were moved from our usual table without notice and it was given to two people who did not appear to be regulars. We were given no explanation. Whilst the food was good as always and the rest of the service was fine. Wes still cannot understand why we were unceremoniously moved.

Visited yesterday evening. Fish pie was very dry and partner felt a crunch whilst eating. The sausage main dish was accompanied by what can only be described as gravy mixed with small chunk well known brand pickle. Was a distinct draft at the table where we sat. This place is going downhill from last year. The service is rushed and my wife who ordered the beer battered fish and chips could not taste the beer flavour in the batter also the chips had been fried in dirty oil we think has they had a funny taste as if something else was fried in the same oil. Now i ordered the mussels in white wine sauce, at n time was a finger bowl offered at the end I had request one, and guess what no towel... at this point I gave up also the amount of sauce that was given beggars belief there must have been at least litre of it when my spoon disappeared beneath the waves that was it, that is when I had to ask for the finger bowl, for the price they are charging food and service has got to improve or once again new owners will be in.

Staying at a local B&B and the owner suggested we eat here. Glad we did as the food was very good and very reasonably priced. One of my pet hates in any eating establishment is food that is tepid and here it was piping hot and tasted fresh. For that reason alone I would say it is an excellent place! Menu is classic but with enough choice for families/groups so all good. Lovely staff providing a good service so would highly recommend. I would suggest booking as it was busy and it is not high season yet.

Came here again for a meal and was not disappointed. Food was lovely and hot, garlic mushrooms, goats cheese and soup of the day (broccoli & stilton) were very good. Main courses appeared quickly, but were freshly cooked. All presented nicely and vegetables for 2 would easily cover 4 people, only slight grumble was that the curry was rather mild more like a Korma style. Belly pork, sausages and chicken dishes tasted fantastic and nice that they weren't all served with chips. Didn't try dessert as too full!! Serving staff were very pleasant and weren't intrusive asking you if everything was alright every 5 minutes.Would recommend sitting in the pub part as very authentic to the building.New pizza place just opened but can't recommend but did look lovely from what we could see. We were on holiday in Cornwall a couple of years ago when we found this little gem. Now visiting again in august 2016 we decided to try it again and we were not disappointed. The building itself is a beautiful thatched cottage with open fires (which must be delightful in winter) and the staff were extremely friendly. A very homely place. We actually ate here 5 out of 7 nights of our holiday. We were without the kids who have now grown up and so as we hadn't had a break for a couple of years decided we would not be cooking for ourselves. Each night they have different specials for starters and mains. Not a single night did we leave unhappy or hungry. We tried various starter's and dishes and we're never disappointed. It may come over as and little expensive but it's worth it. We had to book a table each night as it was so busy. Another thing that I thought was good....no mobile signal or wifi...so we could just sit and chat and be a couple and enjoy our time together. Dogs are also welcome in the bar area.We actually wished we had eaten here every night but we wanted to try other places too.

Our visiting friends had spotted The Smugglers Den previously but not tried it so when we arrived at another local venue at 7.05 to be told the kitchen closed at 7.00, The Smugglers Den came to mind. We did ring ahead to check dogs were allowed. What a treat. The surroundings are cosily old and welcoming. The staff cheerful and efficient. The menu is long enough to satisfy everyone and short enough that freash ingredients can be used. The portions are generous but not overwhelming and are certainly worth the prices charged. I have never had so many mussels in a portion where the meat filled the shell and the hake and prawns tagliatelle was simple but so delucious with the ribs aparrently the same. The four of us were too full for dessert but we all saw something we were sorry to miss out on. When in the area of Perranporth, this will now be our restaurant of choice. We also noticed that a separate pizzeria adjoins the restaurant for greater choice. Not to be missed.

She stood waiting to place it on the table & proceeded to move the board with our starter food away before we had even finished . . Our main course was far from good . I had a beef tartlet with blue cheese & the cheese had overpowered the whole dish . My friend had a Cumberland sausage ring with veg & mashed potatoe . . It was swimming in gravy & the veg was still very hard . The presentation was terrible . . We had only finished eating a few moments when the waitress asked if we would like anything else . . When we said no thank you, she asked us if we would mind moving with our drinks somewhere else as they had people waiting . . I will certainly not be returning there again . .it was bloody awful !

I have stopped several times here for a drink but this was the first I ate here. It's a very beautiful old pub with loads of charm, lots of draught ales and very extensive menu. The pub is divided into 2 parts:restaurant & bar area. Both have tables for eating. There is also a new addition to the pub : a pasta & pizza restaurant (seperate to the pub) with different opening times and obviuosly a different menu . I ate in the pub. Firstly, be aware that the pub is dog friendly in the bar area, whicn is significant because there is a campsite just behind the pub and many campers turn up for dinner with their dogs and kids , so first tip : if you don't like noisy kids or yapping dogs make sure to book in the restaurant area and for a later sitting, 6:30 - 7pm to be avoided IMO. Having said this, the campsite is only open in summer so off season this shouldn't be a problem. Secondly : booking essential. I saw quite a few people turned away. There is a big team of staff and they are very good at their jobs too, helpful, friendly and efficient. Finally the food: really good, a large choice and reasonably priced. Would go again but not before 8pm ! Btw : this pub closes in the afternoon and reopens at 17:45...

We tried this pub based on recent reviews. I took my 94 year old grandfather here for sunday lunch. Our table was situated in a room so dark we had to use a torch to see the menu. We asked to be moved which wasn't a problem. I ordered roast lamb and grandfather had beef. After a short wait the waitress brought our meals. Two roast beef. I explained I had ordered lamb. The plates were taken away and immediately brought back. The plates were one lamb and one beef. The meats looked identical. The meat was cold, the potatoes warm, the frozen parsnips were rock hard but hot and the selection of veg looked wilted. The lamb tasted awful, no lamb taste. This was a cheaply produced meal and tasted cheap. I will not return.

I meant to write this review ages ago but never got around to it, I have however now made the effort as its worthy of mention. The staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful, they even let us charge our mobile phones for free! Lovely food too as I remember. This busy bar is used by locals and visitors alike, the food is excellent and they let you buy a beer tankard with 'smugglers den' on it- lovely souvenir of a great place to eat. Parking is limited but very achievable. Top tip is to definitely book and parking is easier the earlier you go. We have visited Smugglers many times in years past and although found it pricey we were impressed. Hence we decided to visit to check out the improvement to the decked area. Suitably impressed we decided the visit for lunch..Having observed the very clear signage relating to meal serving times we concluded that a salad or light ploughman's lunch could easily be prepared and consumed within the 35 minutes before the throw out time of 1500 hrs. We selected a table and I approached the bar to order. I found myself being summoned from the middle of the bar to the till at the side of the bar where a rather school teacher ish woman proceed to "inform " me, "You are aware " of their seemingly strict timing issues. Having been suitably dressed down I placed and paid for my meal and drinks.Returning to the table my wife informed me that she had just received the same "treatment" from the same woman..Then the food arrived....My wife returned to the table two minutes later and I felt I needed to apologise for the pitiful board that was in front of us.Cheese.. One small wedge. Bread..Two thin wedges of focacca type bread..Butter...3 pre wrapped squares...far too much for the Sad bread. Ham..One slice...Salad? ?? A few leaves from a mixed leaves bag..cucumber. ..3/4 5mm cubes...celery. ..miniscule...pickled onions 3 about 3cm diameter... pickle..an small ramekin half full. £8:50 per serving! Really,Smugglers Den in the 21st century seem to be living up to their earlier namesake.

My boyfriend dragged me in here after a long walk and I was happily surprised. Such a sweet traditional pub tucked away but with a lot of character and friendly staff. The kitchen was closing at 3pm so we ordered our food quickly, and it came in good time. The Camembert was delicious and I had a steak and ale pie. My boyfriend had the fish and chips and we both couldn't move after. It was nice to talk to some of the regulars too, it made it warm and welcoming. Thanks for a great afternoon!!

When you first see this pub it gives an oldie worldy feel - distinctive thatched roof and old fashioned inside with a nice big open fire. Christmas decorations were done nicely too. Staff were very friendly. Food did not disappoint, I had fish and chips which tasted yummie. Nice way to spend an afternoon on a very rainy day. Great atmosphere, we could easily have spent several more hours here. The pubs a bit out of the way but definitely worth a visit- we will certainly be returning again.

This old thatched pub is out of the way, but worth seeking out. Tucked away down a lane it is a short drive or a walk across fields from the village of Cubert. It was very quiet when we visited but the staff were very friendly and courteous. The food was excellent, well cooked and presented - there was almost too much but we managed! The beer was worth the visit alone! It is a 'dog friendly' pub - dogs allowed in the bar, not the restaurant area, but this is usual. We were made to feel welcome as was our dog.

Lovely old building with a thatched roof. Very welcoming staff and a dog friendly dining area away from main restaurant which suited us perfectly as we had a large, but quiet, dog with us. Very good choice of food on menu and also a daily specials board. Staff were attentive but not intrusive. Food was promptly delivered, well presented, hot and delicious. Although the location, down a typical Cornish lane may be daunting for some there is plenty of parking and it would be a shame if you missed this experience. Can't wait until our return.

Just got back from a terrific evening out at the Smugglers Den. Food was terrific and there was plenty of it. Braised blade of beef was melt in the mouth, Beer battered Fish the same. The puddings ( Banoffee Cookie based cheesecake and Sticky toffee pudding) were really too much but delightful all the same. The new hosts(as of March 2015) were fantastic company and very attentive, They made Jarvis( our Golden Retriever) very welcome and introduced him to Alfie. A fantastic night and very reasonably priced. Eat your heart out Rick Stein!!! Ps only complaint made by Jarvis...where were the doggy treat jar. :)

We ate here on out final night in Cornwall for 2015 as we were unable to get in on our previous visit to the place and it was no surprise. Both the food and drink were of exceptional quality, though unlike the Scarlet 2 nights previously didn't WOW us, but you are not paying Scarlet prices!!!! It was nice and would recommend others to go. Service was ok a little slow, though in fairness the restaurant was very busy and seemed to be understaffed a bit on this particular evening.

We love this place :) it's very pretty and you have to go down some lovely Cornish lanes to find it. It's mainly an eating venue as its out in the sticks but there is a camp site near by which we are going to look into :) we booked our table in advance from home but if you come early enough I'm sure you would get a table :) it has good beer too and comfortable surroundings. It's beamed and atmospheric. The staff are great, very attentive, no long queues at the bar.

We visited here twice during our recent 2 weeks in Newquay. On our first visit we had a snack for lunch and after looking at the dinner menu we decided to return for a meal in the evening and we are glad we did. On entering the pub we were warmly greeted and shown to our table. The whole experience was very pleasant and we enjoyed our food. If I had to complain it would be the size of my pasta dish. It was enormous even to my standards and I am a big eater. However it was delicious.

The last occasion I ordered a trio of chocolate but was served a plain chocolate mousse by mistake as my lady went to pay the bill that manager pointed out her their mistake and deducted the cost of the sweet from the bill. The restaurant gets very busy so i would recommend booking I guarantee you won't be disappointed

Tucked away down a narrow Cornish lane off the beaten track, this lovely old pub, with its thatched roof, dark beams, little nooks and romantic history of smugglers' deeds, is well worth a visit. There's a pub garden and the terraced area has some lovely views across the countryside to the back of the dunes between Perranporth and Holywell. The food's really good as well with very generous portions. My partner particularly enjoyed the rack of ribs. The staff were friendly and welcoming. Altogether a really lovely place for an evening out. I would recommend booking as it looks like it gets busy at the weekends.

the food and service in this pub are fab,the garlic mushrooms on toast for the starter was lovely with just the right amount of garlic, but the highlight was the main, cajun chicken talietelle was the loveliest freshest pasta ever and the chicken cooked just right and not to hot and spicy, only complaint was the trio chocolate mouse for desert was a bit on the small side but then i'm a greedy bugger so i'll forgive that, but the real highlight was the young lady who served me,very helpful friendly and polite,so if your in the Newquay area give it a go you'll not be dissapointed

We had a wonderful party after our daughters christening in the smugglers function room. We decorated the day before the party. The function room is beautiful, clean and airy with outside views across perran sands. The landlord Jason who was behind the bar looked after us and our 70 guests amazingly :-) but the food was the really outstanding surprise of the day. The quality of the food far exceeded our expectations it was delicious, different and cooked with lots of love and thought. We felt really proud to host our daughters party there. Thank you to Jason and the chefs and staff of the smugglers inn for your hard work and such a great memorable occasion.

We have been to the Smugglers den many times previous to this visit however this was before the "sudden closed period" and unfortunately for them they have NOT reproduced the quality of food or service provided. The food we had was cold, overcooked and generally not very tasty, we then waited 43 minutes for a dessert to which we never received an excuse/apology for.As there are many incredible pubs in this area of Cornwall, I would suggest you try one of those rather than the smugglers as it has gone dramatically down hill compared to how it was before they closed down for a while last year.

We visited this pub as a one-off whilst staying in Newquay. We wanted a good Sunday roast in a quaint pub and that's certainly what we got. Beautiful, top-quality food and cooking, sat by a log fire in a stunning olde-worlde country pub. Big beer garden as well which I can imagine would be perfect in the summer with a nice pint. And the staff were all lovely. Really welcoming, friendly and accommodating. The pub has only just re-opened after a change of ownership so get down there and help build the business up! It's well worth it!

We have been visiting this quaint village pub near the north Cornish coast for a number of years now and it never fails to impress with its quality of fresh local food and service. It is always better to book in advance and would imagine during high season it would be essential to do so. There is a lovely outside area for families to eat and enjoy the warm summer evenings and plenty of holiday camping areas not too far from the pub along the coast. Our party of four enjoyed varied starters and mains which left no room for any of their delicious desserts - all so tempting. Once again, this great pub never fails! Role on 2015 and our next visit/s!

First time staying in nearby Crantock and the Smugglers was recommended to us by a few people. Nice atmosphere in a secluded location. Service was good, pork belly definitely recommended - though very filling. A bit pricier than the average "Wetherspoons" pub, but quality of food is much better than average.Being very impressed, we visited a second time later in the week. This time I had the pulled pork burger, another good dish and went well with a Rattlers cider!Would definitely recommend to others and will revisit if/when I'm next in the area.

Myself and family of 3 came in for dinner on the off chance on seeing the sign on the road as we were looking for a quick change from our normal haunt. We arrived and saw it really busy and we're asked if we had booked but we had not. So we went to the bar and had a drink to be greeted by a waitress who managed to squeeze us in the warm restaurant, with great 16th century character. We chose from the menu that was full of traditional classics. Considering the restaurant was very busy the staff all knew what had to be done and the food came quick and was of very high quality and could tell it was fresh and made from scratch.A real big congratulations to the management and the team for great successful service in this busy holiday period keep the good work up guys ( a restaurant manager that knows service )Comment below nothing has been missed quality of food and service is at a fair competitive price.
