The Small Holding is an unforgetable experience. We opted for the 8 course "Full Acre" tasting menu & were well & truly satisfied. Every dish was delicious & tasted so fresh. James & his staff explained every dish in detail. Vegetarians are well catered for. The atmosphere is warm & cosy. A truly fabulous evening.

There are restaurants and then there are little gems hidden in the countryside that make your experience one you will never forget! Thank you The Small Holding for the wonderful lunch! Suzi, Max and Sophie were attentive, informative, friendly and professional but with a warm and caring touch. The food was superb and with such high standards! I love their ethical values and you can feel it from the moment you walk through their door. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Since reading about this Michelin Green Star more than a year ago, it has been on the wish list. Much to my surprise and delight, my husband advised me, on the eve of my 40th Birthday, we would be going for a special meal there. We went for the full acre- and we attended with my step son, who was delighted with his meal. Husband was designated driver, so just I enjoyed the delights of the wine pairing- which was exceptional. Amazing snacks and bread to start- I wish I had my camera out to capture my step sons delighted face with the chalk stream trout tartlet! Moving on, I particularly enjoyed the simple but delightful potato, mushroom and wild garlic. Fish courses were tasty, and we laughed when my step son said 'KFC' looking at the menu, and then an actual chicken fillet (like KFC but so much better!) came out. The venison could have done with being a little bigger, and the squash was a little salty, but these are small areas of feedback. The desserts were a real star, and I am not usually too bothered with desserts- so incredibly tasty! The yoghurt whey caramel was divine. Service was so lovely and friendly. It is disappointing I couldn't bring my dog, as having my boy with me is always the cherry on top, but it was worth arranging a baby sitter for. We will definitely return to experience different seasonal menus!

A trip to The Small Holding is an adventure, an exciting experience and a huge treat! The food is always completely delicious, beautiful to look at and almost everything comes either directly from the farm there or from as close as possible. Sustainability and zero waste is really important to them. Even the ‘no-dig’ way they farm helps reduce greenhouse gas release. The best part of the experience is the staff - both front of house and the chefs who come to the table to explain all the details of the food and wines. They are so welcoming, knowledgeable and passionate. You can taste the love and hard work that goes into every dish!

We had a wonderful meal at The Smallholding to celebrate my birthday. We were made to feel very welcome and the birthday card signed by the staff was a lovely touch. The staff were knowledgeable and friendly, and very well-informed about the menu. The food was sensational and each course presented new delights. I had the vegetarian menu, which was thoughtfully prepared with tasty vegetable alternatives to meat, although not much protein. The only course where I really felt short-changed was when my husband had a succulent scallop but the veggie replacement was a solid chunk of vegetable (kohlrabi, I think). The desserts were out of this world and the accompanying wines were delicious. An excellent experience overall.

It is rare in this world to find a true gem in the midst of all the mundane - but if you chose to go to Cranbrook you will have found one. From the moment you enter, the atmosphere is inviting. The front of house are friendly, efficient, and demonstrate a genuine desire to engage and please their customers (isn't that a novel idea in 2024!). Every dish served is explained in detail, how & where the ingredients are sourced, and questions answered about where the notion for the dish came from. Its even possible to engage and have some friendly banter with both the Chef's & the waiters/waitresses (another novel and increasingly unique idea in 2024!). Each course can come with a wine specifically chosen to match the dish by in-house sommelier's. Without doubt I would wholeheartedly recommend The Small Holding.

Just go here, you will not be disappointed. 7 of us dined here. The staff were welcoming and very good, explaining the sources of food and the ethos of the restaurant. While there were things on the menu I would not normally eat, I intended to try it anyway. And the food was excellent, as good as any Michelin starred restaurant I have eaten in. The chocolate ice cream with mushroom was unbelievable. The sommelier particularly was excellent. She was funny, engaging and did the perfect job of picking the wines and explaining them. Every pairing was interesting and matched well. Just get a booking and go!

Our first visit to this small rural restaurant. We had the smaller 5 course tasting menu and we were hugely impressed by both the food and the service by the young staff, who were very friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming. They had adapted all the individual courses to meet my gluten free allergy. The food was all beautifully presented and described by the staff as it arrived at our table. The combination of textures and flavours was lovely and we enjoyed every course without exception. We shall be recommending the venue to friends and family and we will certainly be visiting again early in the New Year.

Would give this 6 stars if I could. The most recent reviews here echo my thoughts. Wonderful, inventive tasting menu, locally sourced ingredients, beautifully presented ….delicious, delicate and well combined flavours. Helpful, knowledgeable and attentive staff. Those serving explained the dishes as they presented them. Dietary requirements were accommodated. The home baked bread and hand made butter was divine too. We had a pre booked tour of the kitchen garden before hand. Can’t wait to return to discover what a different season will bring to the table.

Our second visit to The Small Holding. As good if not better than our first visit in June 2022. Service excellent from start to finish. Both Will and Matt took time to speak to both my partner and I which was a nice touch! The eight course menu which ended up being 10 courses with pre dinner snacks and petit fours was outstanding. In particular the halibut dish and the beetroot and chocolate dessert were 10/10! Cannot fault this restaurant in any way! Very impressive how they can adapt and change a menu every month in accordance with what they produce. Can’t wait to return for a third time.

Our third visit to the Small Holding and another delightful experience, with the fish dishes on the 'Full Acre' tasting menu particularly standing out this time: two for me, plus a third for my companion whose diet does not include the venison which came after. Terriffic wine pairings, with everything presented well and introduced by the team ranging from enthusiastic to passionate.

We visited on a hot September night. The welcome was excellent, the staff very pleasant and knowledgeable. We enjoyed a cocktail outside, and chose the Half acre menu. Every course was delicious. Two of the courses were brought to the table and explained by the lovely chef/owner, who also stopped to chat. We loved all the little quirks, hand printed name label on the table. Wooden cutlery holder, special happy birthday hand written card. All very personal touches. All in all a lovely evening. We will visit again next time we travel South.

What a fantastic dining experience! Before I even mention the food, the team were absolutely brilliant! So passionate and knowledgable about their approach, their ingredients, their wine and making you feel so welcome and like the only guests in the restaurant. We had the ‘full acre’ an incredible tasting menu with the wine flight and every course was exquisite. As a coeliac I get very anxious eating out but eating gluten free here is not only no problem, but it’s easy because many of the courses are naturally gluten free anyway and when it isn’t the adjustments do not make you feel like an afterthought - cue stunning gf brioche bread with the most extraordinary butter - something us coeliacs hardly ever ever get to experience. As for the rest - well, the pics don’t do it justice, and I hate taking food photos in restaurants but I just had to for the coeliac community to see!!

A really lovely experience. The setting is beautiful and the food is excellent, but what really stands out is the quality of service, enthusiasm and knowledge of the waiters, chefs and sommelier. They genuinely seem to share the restaurant's passion for serving own-grown or locally sourced, seasonal food. We started with cocktails outside, overlooking the kitchen garden, and then both had the 'half-acre' 5 course tasting menu, finishing with a cheese course. The wine matches were thoughtful, complimentary and different enough to make them interesting. The food was beautifully presented, and, most importantly really tasty. Thank you for a perfect anniversary celebration. We will definitely return.

Despite the 5.30 start occasioned by the new early closing orders, we skimped on lunch and felt ready for the feast. We started with a Japanese influenced kombucha tea to cleanse the palate, followed by a consommé of oriental influence. Then a delicious pepper tart encased in the finest, thinnest pastry, followed a celebration of potato - a simple boiled potato stuffed with smoky cods roe and garlic crisps on a bed of superb mash, then a few oysters - the only non-local ingredient, a lightly grilled fillet of halibut on pickled cucumber, a delicious scallop with Swede purée on the side, decorated with slivers of swede. Meat course was local pork five ways - loin, bon bon, belly, head with parsley, and small pice of liver (a bit strong for me). The pre-dessert was a jelly of local autumn fruits with a lovage (?) creme, followed by the most delicious pickled and stewed apples enveloped in an apple froth. If that wasn’t enough coffee and petits fours to follow. The staff was charming, with each course being presented by a different member, all knowledgable about the fair. It’s a family business with Chef and front of house being brothers, and partners and friends on the floor. I can’t recommend this restaurant highly enough. A truly delicious British dining experience.

Hidden down a quiet country lane you find this very understated restaurant that produces the most amazing, tasty, beautifully presented and creative food. They focus on seasonal produce, some they grow or rear, the rest they source as locally as possible. The staff are friendly, knowledgable enthusiastic and welcoming. Book it for a special occasion you will not be disappointed.

First time out to restaurant in 6 months and felt very comfortable with socially distanced tables, no menus necessary as it is a tasting menu ingredients fresh local and what is available. Lovely meal served with passion around ten courses, not a dud dish amongst the different dishes' Beautifully presented and very efficiently served.

Visited here for the first time on Saturday and found it to be an amazing experience. Service is exceptional and food was superb. The taster menu is very filling with a choice of drink matching. I Definitely recommend this restaurant for a very different dining experience.

Return visit but this time being treated. Our friends had just got married. The welcome was very personal and gave a royal marriage welcome. A relaxing glass of champagne on the patio and then the 14 course tasting menu.Every course is just a few mouthfuls but just enough to capture an abundance of different flavours. From the home made dry meat with a pickled beetroot consommé to the final home made petite fours it was stunning Stand out dishes included a spaghetti squash spicy tart:halibut; potato with mouse and salmon roe mouse and a unique dish served in a real bowl made of ice. Pickled and baked radish.Enough said just book and go.

If this innovative and well executed food was served in Manhattan, people would be doing backflips up Madison Avenue. Ignore the tightwad reviews on TripAdvisor and settle in for a well paced 3-hour tour through exquisite seasonal British food. Excellent service too, from staff who care about produce. A Michelin star can’t be too far away.

We visited the small holding hoping for a memorable evening, we had been given this as a present, I can only say that for our total bill of £340 !!! Was not covered by our gift, very tiny portions as a previous review the portions were canapé sized, when this gift was purchased the prices were lower and as no menu is given and no prices shown we was unaware of price increase. £70 per person for the wine flight is an outrageous amount of money. Still you learn by your mistakes, we won’t be returning, if you do choose to go do yourselves a favour and ask for menu and prices first. I would like to add the waitress serving the wine has an amazing knowledge of wine.

An exceptional meal - from the crudités with chive mayonnaise, the perfect salami, the oyster/crab/lobster hat trick, the mutton to the glorious desserts. And interesting wines including the best Beaujolais I have had in years. Thank you.

Should be. Extraordinarily creative 10 course menu with minimal field to fork distance. Special mention for the kedgeree in an egg cup and the bone marrow mash.We also stayed overnight in the nearby May Farm and the breakfast brought round by the restaurant for self-catering in the morning was fabulous. We'll be back, and I don't often say that.

Decided to try this restaurant after hearing so much about it and booked for Valentine’s evening. We were delighted with what we found. Friendly efficient service, delicious food and great wine choices. The service was very good and each of the 10 courses were explained as they arrived. There was no menu so the surprise element worked really well. The wine choices were excellent and a massive choice by the glass. We started in the bar with sparkling local rosé as part of the menu and this was accompanied by Camembert profiterole, delicious Radishes and Duck hearts on a rosemary skewer. We then moved into the restaurant and continued with :Crab veloute with pork head Bon Bon with appleOyster fried with mayoRaw beef with egg and chivesCauliflower baji with pickled cauliflowerBread with beef dripping and olive oil and balsamicArtichoke Gurnard carpaccioLamb loin and kidney with carrot mint sauce and beef pieCheese with jelly and malt loafRubarb sorbet with brandy mouseMillefeuille with apple pear and ginger milk ice creamCoffee and madeleinesThe list above doesn’t do the menu justice as the flavours and presentation were superb. Faultless.Bravo chefs. We loved this restaurant and will be back.

Very bad experience ordered baked potato beans, cheese and side salad High lipped Plate arrived with potato cut open a little cheese on it and a pool of baked beans mostly sauce all over the whole plate including the few leaves of salad -not acceptable tasteless and looked a mess. However, staff very friendly and I was offered a replacement but as in a group timing would have been difficult

Very slow to get a tea and latte around 15/20 minutes. Good value for money breakfast but eggs were like rubber and hash browns very greasy. Was busy and clearly popular but I wouldn’t rush back
