Took a break midway between Hastings and London, based on location and some good reviews. Started with some excellent Landlord - in really good shape. Extensive menues - we both decided on pan-fried Skate, on a cabbage/bacon bed. Very good portions; beautiful fish; properly cooked. Will definitely visit again! Booking recommended.

We went recently for a family meal and thought it was quite overrated. It was very, very busy with a huge queue for the carvery. Food was quite expensive and you have to have a dessert with the carvery making it pricey if you don't have a huge appetite. Limited kids menu and it says the kids carvery is only for children under 5.

We happened to wander in the Black Horse out of curiosity and happily stayed for a few hours. The smell of the food throughout was enough to convince us to have our evening meal there, and we did not regret it for a second. Whilst this little gem is a good 40 minute drive from where we live, we will certainly be making the drive again! A superb friendly team, delivering well a well created tasty menu! Be prepared to wait a while at exceptionally busy times as everything is made fresh and to order! Yet worth the wait!

Service very friendly and focussed .The carvery was so tasty and probably the best I have had -even the Yorkshires were good - full of flavour. Succulent meat & very tasty veg and the gravy had depth. The trio of puddings was excellent-so good . Overall excellent-5*

Edited 2025. Still really like this pub for Sunday carvery. Today the puddings were very disappointing. I had a total of 1 strawberry cut into 4 pieces on my 'summer berry' pavlova. Super food and range of drinks. Nice staff. Amazing puddings. Decor a little tired.

Always love the Sunday carvery here. We went just after Christmas (regular menu) and the waiting staff didn't seem to be able to cope with our group of 12; food slow to be delivered, had to ask for further drinks, wrong items etc. We were hesitant to return after that experience, so great that the carvery was much better today though we had to ask for simple things like flutes for the sparking wine, and multiple waitresses came over within a few minutes of each other so didn't seem to communicate between them. The roast was amazing - especially the lamb. Disappointingly, the berry pavlova had a single strawberry as it's fruit component. The waitress didn't offer any explanation (I've had that pud many times before), and nothing was done about it.

Booked table for four of us for Sunday carvery. Food was exceptional with a choice of pork, beef, lamb, chicken or ham all cooked to perfection. Served with roast potatoes, pigs in blankets, stuffing balls and Yorkshire puddings. A good selection of veg and various sauces to compliment the meal. Desserts were lovely, I had the millionaires cheesecake, it was very good. The pub was busy with regulars enjoying a drink at the bar. We were made very welcome and the service was great. So if your after a good Sunday roast get a table booked, we weren’t disappointed.

Due to a misunderstanding, we were seated smack bang between the ever-opening door and quite noisy patrons drinking at the bar so today’s atmosphere was not ideal for us . I love this pub. Quality food ranging in price for those who can't afford a lot, for instance their Posh Pie at £8.95 is a cottage pie with a loads of well prepared vegetables, and it's delicious. On the other hand you can order lobster. The beer is good, there are some good wines and if you like you can have larger. The ambiance is good too, very much like a pub than a restaurant but in warmer weather they have a great patio area with an adjustable roof where there would be a bit more space. Plus they have a backroom where you could have your own private party. It's a great place for just meeting up with friends or for a more formal and up market experience.

Recommended to give it a try so we did. Excellent in all regards. Service, food, ambiance. Although huge if including all areas the 'bar area' is very much that of a traditional pub. Choice of 3 real ales and wide range of wines. Has a reputation of being good for fish dishes so we had gf fish pie and bass fillets. Plentiful and full of flavour. Most of the pie finished but the sauté potatoes also beat me. The mixed vegetables generous. The desserts look great but neither of us had room. As it can handle large numbers happy to share as we will certainly return and would hate it being full.

Went here for Sunday lunch last weekend and it is without doubt the best carvery I've ever had (and I am extremely fussy!) They had a selection of 5 different choices which you could mix, plentiful portions, superb crisp roast potatoes (which is almost unheard of) and a fantastic selection of vegetables all frequently replenished. You could even go back for second helpings but make sure you leave room for dessert which is included in the very reasonable price! And talking of the desserts, there is a great selection with all I think, being home made by the superb chef. I opted for the cheesecake which was absolutely amazing. On top of that, the staff were all really friendly and helpful and it's just a really nice atmosphere with a lovely area out the back which on the day we went was showing the Wimbledon final on a big screen. Cannot recommend this place highly enough.

After having tried to complete the mayday run, we stopped off here to get out of the rain. We walked into the pub drenched and looking like drowned rats. Steph, the lady behind the bar l, noticed us and immediately brought us over warm blankets as we were freezing. After taking off our bike jackets she offered to tumble dry our jumpers. Even our t-shirts were wet so brought us over jumpers to put on while they dried. Even offered my brother a clean pair of socks because of the puddles in his boots. After numerous hot coffees and lovely food we are now warm and dry waiting for the rain to let up. Would give more than 5 stars if I could. Highly recommend. I can't give this pub any more than five stars unfortunately, but please know that I would if I could. We decided to ride down to Hastings for the Mayday run, and got absolutely drenched on the way. We gave up halfway, and decided to find somewhere to dry off a bit. As soon as we walked in, Stephany brought us blankets and offered to dry our outer layers in their dryer, while we ate some food and what food! Huge, delicious portions of food fairly priced for the quality. They made sure we were comfortable and warm throughout, and every single member of the team stopped for a chat- they were all so pleasant to talk to. We were feeling miserable when we walked in, but our visit here definitely brought our mood back up. If you are ever driving past, do yourself a favour and stop over for a while! Lots of menu choices,my partner chose the pie ( he always makes a big deal of is it a proper pie ,or just a filling with a pastry lid, which he hates). The pie was a great slab of the meatiest pie with proper pastry ,I had the chicken fajitas, the portions were absolutely huge ! We had the homemade onion rings too.It was all absolutely amazing , sizzling hot spicy chicken chunks, fresh side salad, soft tortilla wraps, crunchy but no grease onion rings. All the meals coming out looked fabulous, best meal out we’ve had in ages. The service was spot on,everyone looked cheerful and happy.Great value for money.Highly recommend.
