Tallow in Tunbridge Wells

Having eaten several times at a pub run by the now owners of Tallow, we were keen to try their new venture. A way to travel for us and expectations were high… First impressions were of an inviting looking building, second impressions were of a warm, cosy place heated with a log burner. It was a cold, damp night but all this was immediately forgotten as we became enveloped in the Tallow magic. Nice decor, a mix of old and the more contemporary; stripped back wood and brick which complimented the building itself, with the statement fireplace and central winding staircase, a really lovely atmosphere. The waiting staff were all that you could wish for and more. Each course was described by the staff as it was served and just as delicious as its very explicit description. Without being told, our server asked if I was Vegetarian as I had chosen plant based options for both my starter and main courses. Without being asked, two different amuse bouche arrived, one for me and a different one for my husband. It’s little details like this that separate this restaurant from a lot of others and possibly why, on a wet Wednesday evening in November, every table was taken - bar one! Delicious food, beautiful surroundings, first class waiting staff, everything that we had hoped for and more. Would definitely recommend

I was treated for my birthday and the food was absolutely amazing! The food is like art on the plate and just looks too pretty to eat.Every mouthful was heavenly and I would definitely recommend this place to people who enjoy fine dining!! Thank you for making my birthday so special!

Tasting menu is fantastic, the accompanying wines are well worthwhile and add to the experience. Our hostess was brilliant and knew in-depth about each wine and each course. Well worth a special trip.

I don't write reviews until I have been somewhere at least a couple of times to check the service is consistent. Here, I can assure you that it is! Excellent delicious food and drinks, flawless service and friendly, welcoming and unpretentious atmosphere. The best food in Tunbridge Wells but in relaxed surroundings. Plus you don't leave feeling as fat and bloated as a whale due to the portion sizes being just right with just the right amount of time between them if you have three courses I find. Most places give me way too much. This place is just my cup of tea! Thanks all 🙏

Could have been better..we have much about "Tallow" and was looking forward to the brithday treat. we found the interior down stairs a bit plain. welcome was ok, but nothing special. No table linen! if i am paying this much then there should be table linen, no wine list on line, we chose our wine and it was poured, but we had to top up our own glasses, not enough attention by the owner or staff, food was fine, with same individual restaurants, I do think the head chef should just walk around and say good evening, I understand maybe not on a busy night but there were only 16 guests in that night. would we return, thanks but no thanks.

Staff were excellent, and very attentive. Given how early you have to book it was surprising to see that the restaurant really wasn’t very busy - a lot of 4 place tables taken up by just 2 people, so atmosphere wasn’t great, even though the restaurant is very tastefully fitted out. Food and drink was really disappointing though. Espresso martinis to start were incredibly bitter. Food was really mixed. We had the tasting menu and several dishes were far too salty. And the dishes weren’t ’introduced’ as you’d normally get with a tasting menu. Lovely restaurant but disappointed with the food in particular, so wouldn’t go back unfortunately, especially having cost over £130 per head!

Sam and Lauren did a fantastic job at giving us really delicious food, wine and service. We loved every minute of the evening. Thank you very much for delivering an outstanding culinary experience.

Could not fault this evening. Outstanding food, service, and drinks from start to finish. The concept seems quite simple, which hasn't really been executed much in our area (maybe more in London). We were very lucky that the other diners at the table were great company and shared our love of good food. Loved the experimentation with different foods and how they change the menu every month. It certainly showed how good this place was, with other diners coming in from over an hour's travel to have dinner. Very lucky we have this on our doorstep. Thank you to the team at Tallow for making this whole experience so special for my wife's birthday. See you again soon!

Amazing restaurant. From the moment you enter you feel at home. A unique dinning room setting you up for a unique dinning experience. The food is absolutely delicious, the service is friendly but professional.

This was our second visit to Tallow, the first last year blew our socks off, not only the most exquisite food, beautifully presented and seasoned to perfection but front of house was as slick as you’d expect where somewhere is serving such good food, a husband and wife team (I’m so sorry I don’t their names) but Mr Tallow was in the kitchen and Mrs Tallow was out front with another excellent member of staff and the whole experience made us want to come back so we did and I’m sad to say we were rather disappointed, neither husband or wife were there and it just didn’t have the sparkle it did first time round, food was good but not exceptional and front of house felt rushed, one lady was nice and accommodating, the other we felt didn’t want to be there. We will go back but I think I’ll be asking for an evening when both the owners are there.

Stunning food, thoughtful wine list and wonderful staff.

Absolutely superb, fantastic tasting menu and wine flight. The waitress that introduced the wine was passionate and knowledgeable about their product. Unfortunately, the other waitress was offhand but I wouldn’t mark down because of that, but maybe some customer focused training would help her. We are going to book the chefs table in the not to distant future.

Have been involved in hotel and food and beverage management in many 5 star hotels in Asia throughout my career. Tallow, in terms of quality and delivery surpassed many of the restaurants I managed.imaginative menu creation , flawless execution, wonderfully tasty food combinations, and some of the most professional , knowledgeable service staff I’ve encountered. Ate there with my sisters recently and we were unanimous in the pleasure we derived from the meal we had in Tallow. Price..it comes at a cost, but sometimes the finer things in life do. Our meal was simply superb, enjoyable and a delight.

Amazing evening at chef’s table! This was our third visit to the chef’s table and it never disappoints! The staff were incredibly competent, engaging, friendly and the food and wine was second to none as always! It’s such a pleasure to visit this restaurant, the menu changes each month so you are always delighted with new flavours and food combinations. The knowledge of the food and the wine from everyone involved was fabulous. We will continue to visit this restaurant and always recommend it to our family and friends.

Wow this place is special, we had a lovely lunch. The bread they served was so delicious we couldn't finish our food. The doughnut with duck was one of the best starters I have ever had. The fish was lovely as well. The dessert was light and beautifully presented. There is a chefs table upstairs that looked great would love to try.

Tollow you did not disappoint. From the moment we walked in we were greeted by lovely wait staff, who were very friendly. Chef Rob all our meals were exceptional and could not fault. We enjoyed our evening and we will be telling our Australian friends if they ever come this way, this is a place to go.

Amazing evening at the Tallow chef table last night. The food was superb, and the wine pairing did not disappoint. The service was excellent, and seeing Rob prepare the food in front of us and being able to ask questions was fantastic. Highly recommend and will definitely go again to dine in the restaurant.

Cannot recommend enough. Very relaxed homely surroundings; a friendly, warm and experienced team with food that I would normally associate with eating in France. Fantastic food and great service. Highly recommend what I particularly liked was the relaxed atmosphere all the servers were attentive but not overly so, very knowledgeable but down to earth with the delivery. Felt like a really relaxed place to enjoy great food.

If you’re looking for a perfect meal out then I’d highly recommend Tallow. The food and service here is exceptional, I had the cod to start and I have never tasted anything like it.. amazing! There’s a lovely atmosphere in Tallow thanks to the staff that make you feel so welcome. Will definitely be returning many times this year, Tallow exceeds expectations every time. Thank you!

What can I say - it lives up to the hype. I'm a vegetarian and the meatless options didn't disappoint: they felt complete, and full of flavour, and very satisfying. The hash brown side dish blew both mine & my dad's minds (would have come just for that, to be honest) and the brûlée Roquefort waffles for dessert were a twist of genius. Our wonderful waitress, however, really completed the night with her brilliant service (I didn't catch her name) - often these kinds of places can feel snooty, but I felt so welcomed. Possibly the best dining experience I've ever had... really.

Had an absolutely stunning meal at Tallow, thoroughly enjoying the February menu. The service was fab, the food was totally divine and there was a lovely relaxed environment in the restaurant. Highly recommend the pig cheeks, chicken & artichoke and truffle dumplings, also the hash browns with warm cheese mousse are a must have! Can’t wait to return!

The food and the service were amazing, and the restaurant itself was very classy and warm! The testing menu was absolutely phenomenal!

During our recent visit, we encountered some issues with our reservation. Despite booking three months in advance, a mishap in Tallow booking system led to our reservation being mistakenly cancelled, as it was confused with another customer's cancellation due to a similar name. This error left us without a dining option for the evening, which was particularly inconvenient as we had arranged childcare for the occasion. The offer to seat us within 45 minutes was appreciated but it disrupted the flow of our evening and caused significant stress given child care arrangements. We were initially assured of a meal voucher for our next visit as compensation. However, upon following up, we were disheartened to find the manager and owner questioning the validity of this offer made by her staff. I had challenged this but no response effectively being a liar in the email left a bad taste. This situation, coupled with concerns about the security of customer data in the systems has left us with a negative impression of the organisation and management of the restaurant. We can’t speak of how good the food is or how the staff were as we did not get to eat. we will not be going here again that’s is for sure. Very unprofessional for what’s supposed to be an up market experience! Note to management remediating issues like this should be simple and promises should be kept.

Excellent lunch. Everything was delicious but we particularly enjoyed the arancini and marmite bread and also the chocolate pudding which was fantastic. Friendly service and we really appreciated the lovely birthday gift.

Very flavoursome food-well presented and efficient service. Good wine matches were recommended.Small but cosy downstairs with kitchen and chef's table upstairs. Interesting combinations which work well. Well worth a visit-will plan to go again when the menu changes.

What a fabulous evening! Tasting menu at the Chef's Table upstairs. Perfectly paced meal. Stunning food prepared by chef Matty, who is also very engaging as he talks you through the food. Penny, our sommelier, had an in-depth knowledge of each wine pairing as she talked us through the courses. She was also excellent company for what is a 'must-do' fine dining experience. Thank you for a wonderful time.

A masterclass of how to do it!!!!

Delicious lunch. Wonderful choice. The beef main was very good as was the pollock. We loved the partridge starter and the snacks. Deserts were very good as well. Friendly prompt staff. The restaurant is relaxed and comfortable. We have been 3 times and enjoyed each visit very much.

I don’t normally leave it so long to write a review for a lunch we had on 29 August, well over two months ago. However, if anything, it has crystallised my view having been to a wide range of restaurants both here and in Europe since then. We had an outstanding meal the first time we visited Tallow and there is a post on TripAdvisor about it. On this more recent occasion expectations were as high as they should be, given our past experience. I must confess that I do not recall the precise details of all the dishes we had, but the restaurant undoubtedly will have a record of the dinner menu on that day. The thing I remember most was how disappointed my wife was with the beef main course which had excessive fat on it, something the restaurant staff accepted and on the back of it, generously made some exclusions on the bill. I had what turned out to be a hot cheese dessert, something that I evidently misunderstood from the menu description. I didn’t like it. The starter my wife and I had, although I’m unable to recall the description or ingredients was somewhat underwhelming. I have graded Tallow as ‘Average’, which may be considered harsh, however I think that at this level and at these prices, excellence has to be the order of the day, and I think it was missing by some distance on that day.

Not a surprise this is considered one of the best restaurants in UK, small place (just a few tables) with very calm and intimate atmosphere. The food was absolutely amazing. Definitely can’t be missed.

Such an enjoyable experience and lovely atmosphere. The three of us had the tasting menu which was stunning. We had a range of drinks including beer and the wine flight, all of which complimented what we ate. The staff could not have been more knowledgeable and helpful and added to the experience. We will definitely come again and would highly recommend.

This was a most wonderful dining experience. I started off having a venison Ragu with potato mousse, then a fillet pork with confit belly and cauliflower cheese croquettes and finished with a cheese with soused pears and parkin. Each mouthful of the 3 courses was a taste sensation. The atmosphere was very welcoming and relaxed, the service and presentation of the dishes was extraordinarily good.

Why go to London for fine dining when you can go to Tallow? We have visited a few times for lunch and it has been a wonderful experience every time. Most recently yesterday when the restaurant was super cosy next to the wood burner and the staff were as usual, superb. The food is a taste sensation. Looking forward to my next visit.

I completely see why this place won "best local restaurant" in a somewhat paradoxical nationwide competition - it feels like Michelin quality food in a casual, accessible environment. Obviously it's not cheap, but I don't know anywhere like it for the price.

Would go back! Passing Tallow many times it’s been in my list for a while and wished I had booked before it had won its award and I might have been able to get a weekend booking. For a Tuesday night it was fully booked giving it a busy but relaxed and calm atmosphere with some nice background music. A bit pricey but would agree prices are aligned to the quality of the products used. The muffin instead of bread was a nice touch and quite filling. Main menu a little disappointed that the meat option was venison which is not a meat I eat so opted for the veggie main which was a mushroom pasty and was really surprising, and would recommend. The veggie options were really quite great and would opt for the veggie again. I did find some flavours a little overpowering so once finished each course I was not left wanting more but still really enjoyable. I was too full for dessert but wine selection was great. Presentation and service were 5*. The menu changes every month so I will definitely be visiting again to try some more!

Phenomenal restaurant, amazing food, beautiful room, superb drink choices. Very special experience. I never write reviews, but I saw some people trashing this place and they couldn’t be more wrong. Lovely staff, great atmosphere. Highly recommend. It is expensive, but it is special, special food and people that complain about portion sizes are so so dumb, and they just don’t understand fine dining. We’ll be coming back next time we visit from Canada!

We were lucky enough to sit at the chefs table when we visited this hidden gem a few months ago and when some recent absurd reviews were brought to my attention I wanted to add an account of my own experience. Firstly I wanted to say how professional and knowledgeable the staff were. Ruby was an excellent som and host. She was friendly, enthusiastic and very patient with our party after a few wines! I also enjoyed her tattoos very much, not that I feel that had any bearing on our evening. As an intimate local restaurant we didn’t really know what to expect with the food but we were blown away. Every dish was flawless, there was not one we didn’t enjoy. Chef was extremely impressive and we felt privileged to be at his table. This establishment is well deserved of its recent Britain’s Best Neighbourhood Restaurant award and we would love to return.

Would never return... The food was mediocre. The portion size was absolutely pathetic for the price you pay! Menu is completely different to online. They are trying to be something they are not, only went here because of the false advertising on their social media... The atmosphere is horrible, it's like being in someone's kitchen, staff washing up next to you in a tiny room!! The two women are very rude and have no customer service skills and have no clue what they are talking about when it comes to the wine and food, haha! When we did not leave a tip for the rude women the look on one of their faces was disgusting!!! We had to go and eat elsewhere after spending over £100 each here! Save your money and spend it somewhere nice.

Waste of money. As soon as we sat down and looked at the menu we wanted to leave but we were trapped by the online booking fee that is charged if you cancel, £40 per person! The 2 girls who serve are very rude and I heard them speaking bad about the customers and they had no idea about the food. As soon as they realised there was no tip at the end for them they did not even say Thank you or Goodbye! The food portions are so tiny and so is the restaurant, false advertisement! Save your money and go somewhere worth it, I would NOT recommend. It is a joke!

Amazing place love the attention and food

Lovely aesthetic, charming staff who couldn't be more helpful or accommodating. Food options inventive and varied, and everything tasty but could do with punching up a level in terms of flavour and combinations. For example, we had the hake (delicious, perfectly cooked) with cuttlefish (slightly chewy) and truffle gnocchi (delicious on their own but incongruous with the dish). Would definitely go back, worth a visit. Prices are on the higher end.

We had the ‘chefs table’ last night and the food was amazing. The setting, service and entire experience was first class. Robert the owner and chef cooks in front of you and 7 others explaining each dish of the tasting menu. It’s not cheap but very much worth it. Thanks for a wonderful night, we’ll be back.

Went here last night for my birthday at the chefs table. Absolutely fantastic!! Not only was the food great but watching this man cook and hearing about the dishes was just brilliant!

My husband had been wanting to go and eat at Tallow for awhile now, we finally managed to go today for a lunchtime, from the moment we walked in we were greeted and seated by Kate who looked after us for the duration and was just brilliant, to then experiencing the absolutely incredible food, the choices, the presentation and the taste was completely faultless. We had such a wonderful time and felt completely and utterly content. Thank you all so much plus the cocktails are a must.

Is it acceptable to mark down a place due to the toilets? When there are over 40 diners and only 1 customer toilet in the entire premises, and you’re paying over £100 a head for food, I think it is actually. It used to somehow feel a bit less enjoyable when it was The 26 but at least you had 2 toilets then. Now they’ve closed one of the loos. So you have to hang around in some sort of no man’s land purgatory; waiting neither on the stairs nor the landing, but desperately needing a wee (or worse). Food ok for the price. Service kinda ok for the price. Not worth the 5-star prices overall… it’s proper proper expensive … and, oh, have I mentioned one solitary loo between 40+ diners of all genders? EDIT 19/2/23- AFTER TALLOW’S CONDESCENDING REPLY TO MY REVIEW: 1. To insinuate a reviewer has a problem with a toilet being unisex is both rude and very outdated. To imply a customer is a prude when unisex has been standard in many bars and clubs for 20+ years is really not a good look upon your establishment. Unisex is not the problem. One cubicle in a busy expensive restaurant is. 2. 26 diners PLUS all the customers attending the private room hire party upstairs at the chef’s table have to share the one solitary cubicle. It is deceptive of you to suggest it’s not more than 26 people sharing the same toilet.

The service was outstanding - laid back, friendly and completely unpretentious. Very cosy atmosphere. The food was the best I've eaten in the local area - it's great to have a fine dining option locally that's not stuffy and self-important, and that's actually reasonably priced for the quality of food!

Have visited a couple of times as we just love this place. The tasting menu is always a winner, beautifully created food. Location is just on the outskirts of Tunbridge Wells, so would need to drive or arrange transportation if arriving from outside the area.

Fantastic. This is one of the best restaurants in Kent. The menu is an an amazing array of local produce prepared in creative ways. The chef was also very flexible with one of our party (at late notice) who is severely dairy intolerant. The waiting staff are attentive, friendly and informative but never hovering or pushy. I would highly recommend.

Excellent food with every bite full of flavour! The staff were so knowledgeable on the menu and fantastic drink makers providing information on each dish as it is served. Lovely setting with a cosy intimate yet refreshing feel. I would highly recommend for a special occasion or a treat to visit hear to splash out and feel full of scrumptious food.

I read about Tallow months ago in the Guardian and I am so glad that I booked then and waited all these months to finally get to go. The food was excellent - we had the taster menu and it was thoughtful, interesting and just plain delicious. The wine selection is very good and reasonably priced. And the service was excellent too. We'll definitely go back (and it's a 1h:30 drive for us.
