No estuve decepcionado.

A family occasion and we wanted to try somewhere new and local. Had heard some good reports so booked for five people Saturday night. A little slow with first drinks and service but friendly and apologetic waitress so not a problem - missing side plate, napkin and cutlery in setting was more irritating as they had to be asked for... Starters were patchy - my mackerel was luke warm, served on a cold slab of glass, hardly any of it, and minuscule portions of accompanying items (which did taste nice) meant I was done in three or four mouthfuls and getting hungry. My partner and mother in law both ordered a salad starter that had Goats Cheese as main ingredient, my partner had a couple of tiny pieces of cheese, my mother in law actually thought they'd forgotten to put it on the plate as she literally had a few crumbs of cheese- I'm not exaggerating here - just three or four tiny crumbs...Mains were again a mixed bag - my lemon sole was good but quite a small piece with far too little sauce, the croquet that came with it was dry and dull. Three of us had this dish and all could have eaten at least twice the quantity quite happily - I was still hungry enough to finish off my partners curry dish. There was lots of this, strangely, compared to the other orders. There was a small bowl of a kind of hummus/dhal cross that wasn't very pleasant at all, and a very sickly cream 'soup' but at least there was some food involved. We were loathe to order desserts as I could foresee paying 6.50 to chase a single berry around another innovative plate alternative so we ordered two cheese platters to share. According to the menu three cheeses were coming but only two arrived, same on each platter, one of them being goats cheese (so they did have some of that...) When we enquired about the missing one (Brie), we were told they'd run out of it, no real apology, just a kind of shrug. We then had to ask for missing plates and knives before we could eat what there was. Some of the food was tasty and enjoyable but it was inconsistent and lacking quality in comparison with other similar priced restaurants in the area. The best thing about the evening was the wine. We could have returned to a place we knew, spent the same or less and enjoyed ourselves far more which was a real shame as we were expecting an enjoyable meal in new surroundings. My parents in law paid for the 'treat' and we all went home disappointed. When asked if everything was alright at the end of the evening my partner did start to mention the lack of main ingredient in the starters but was either unheard or ignored. I really wish I had made a complaint at the time but the dinner was for my daughter and my parents in law were paying - I didn't want to completely ruin what was already something of a downer...

Associated with The Abbey Hotel, which is elegant and impeccable in every way, the Slipway Restaurant offered poor service, and the staff seemed to lack proper training. However, the food menu offered variety, was of high quality and was beautifully presented.Upon entering, we were invited to sit in a stuffed sofa. Then we were handed two menus, and then were ignored for five minutes, or so. When the hostess came back, and we questioned why we were still seated in the lobby, it was explained that we could sit on the top floor if we wanted a three course meal, or on the middle floor where the 'street food' menu applied. The first impression we got was that it would be required to eat all three courses if we sat at the top. Instead, when we arrived, the hostess should have said something like, "Would you like to eat in our full service fine dining room, or would you prefer some light bites in our more casual section"? Then she could have seated us right away which is the usual procedure when you go out to eat. But she was multi-tasking at the bar, and probably couldn't have seated us just then. Too busy...too chaotic, and one guest appeared and asked what was taking so long to get their drinks. There were two other ladies handling the entire restaurant. We opted for the fine dining room, and were one of two parties. Later, a third couple came in, and were seated at a table in an inside corner with no view of the harbor (as we had). The hostess gave them a hard time, but finally, upon their insistence they were reseated with a harbor view. As they were also guests at The Abbey Hotel, we got acquainted with them, and later learned that their experience and opinions were the same. There seemed to be chaos in the lobby at the bar, slow service in the restaurant, a lack of familiarity with the menu, and a remark something like, "if you don't order the main at the same time as the starter, the chef will be confused." Considering that he was only catering to two parties by then, this was a very unprofessional remark.Publicity gives the impression that there is outdoor seating, but instead the publicity photos are taken in front of the one and only window which has a balestrade across it giving the impression of a balcony or deck for outside dining. It should also be noted that we had a reservation but arrived a little early.

Really groovy, retro setting with lovely view of the harbour. Coupled with a good menu and great food. Problem is this place puts itself out there as a fine dinning restaurant and their waiters don't know what they're doing! They opened the wine at the bar (I assume) and we topped ourselves up all night, no one cleared table properly so we eventually put all our stuff on a neighbouring table. Pity because it ruins a good foundation. All they need is a decent manager to train up the waiters and oversee things.

Overwhelmingly disappointing! As locals we have visited Slipway before and always had excellent food and service. All my comments are in complete contrast to last visit Last night was so awful. No record of our booking which was made in person at last visit, a month ago. An increase of 30% on each street food dish. Waitress was unsure of priority about taking food or drink order. Wrong wine, as she just poured the already open bottle. which came straight out of its cooler with no-show of the label! She made no effort to place glasses, so we passed them along the table of 4! Dishes arrived tepid, with little or no garnish, The hummus was probably the worst we've ever eaten;tasteless, wet and brown. The chilli prawns - a revelation last time were swimming in an indifferent pink sauce. The soup was cold and there was no cheese near the mini burger. I spilt a glass of wine, no one came altho the noise was audible. No one visited our table to review our opinion, to offer more wine/water/food. We asked for the bill, it arrived hesitantly eventually, but there was no attempt to clear our table at all. We left cash, the exact amount of £70.60. At reception there were 4 waitresses chatting. They watched us help our selves to our coats. I told our wine waitress that we were most disappointed and she LAUGHED! When asked if she thought it was funny, she denied she had laughed. They muttered sorry and that was it, no help with the door, no offer to discuss our disappointment. What has happened here we wonder? This restaurant is owned by Mr and Mrs Cox, owners of the Abbey hotel who pride themselves on their impeccable service and style and hotel guests are encouraged to dine here. Have they visited recently I wonder.? The Restaurant, not busy this evening, altho small, also encourages wedding breakfasts with the reception at the hotel, as it is close to PZ registry office. We have been looking at this as a possible venue for our daughter. The contrast to our last 4 visits, in as many months, is almost Overwhelming!

Just returned from a 3 night stay in Penzance. Found the Slipway by accident having walked out of the Admiral Benbow and turned left on the 2 nd night. We walked in to book a table having read the menu outside. Enjoyed the banter with the staff while booking a table, well done. The meal was very good, on its way to some very fine dining. If its large portions you want then stay away this is not what fine dining is about, its about taste and the taste was good and the price was fine although I did think the wine list was a bit ott on price but having said that the wine was good.I would have given a 5 stars but we also ordered 2 mojitoes that were a disaster, mine was re made as I complained my wife felt awkward about complaining so she drank hers. The second drink was as bad as the first and I did not drink it. When the waitress came over to check on us I asked her who had made them she admitted that she had (too her credit)and she realised they were not very good but that was because she was busy. I was a bit dissapointed to find the £12 odd for the mojitoes was on the bill however we paid for them.Keep up the good food but please, please teach your staff how too make a mojito.

Alles in allem höchst ärgerliche Provinzerfahrung! Besser man geht in das herzlich und bodenständig geführte Life Boat House am Ende des Slipways...

We came on the Slipway by chance - although it is in the Chapel Street restaurant area, it is down a steep side street and we didn't realise it was there. The restaurant offers both small plates "street food" and more formal dining - we were in the upstairs more formal area. We had an excellent meal; my sea bass was exceptional. Service was also excellent: two examples. We didn't order a starter, but an amuse-bouche promptly arrived; it involved shrimp, and my wife can't eat shellfish. When we explained, hers was of course removed - to be promptly replaced, unasked, by one specially prepared without the shrimp. Second, at the table next to us was a large family with a well-behaved but lively two-year-old, and the waiting staff couldn't have been kinder and more considerate. The dining room is lovely, an airy, spacious room with a large window overlooking Mount's Bay. Prices were entirely fair for a first-class dining experience. But be warned - there aren't many tables. We were lucky to get one as a walk-in; it would be worth the trouble to book.

On a recent holiday to Penzance we visited Slipway twice in 3 days, we liked it so much! The first time we sat upstairs and for the a la carte experience (next to the window we had a lovely view over the harbour, probably the best seats in the room). On first entering Slipway it looks like a funky bar, although upstairs is a more traditional dining environment. The service was prompt and although most of the staff were young girls they were friendly and what they perhaps lack in 'finesse' they more than made up for with honest enthusiasm. The menu isn't extensive with just 3 or 4 dishes to choose from - but even so it was hard to choose as they all sounded (and tasted!) so good . We selected an unusual Sicilian Shiraz too, which was also fantastic. The restaurant has a 2nd menu - streetfood or tapas style smaller dishes. On our 2nd visit we sat downstairs in a snug corner and escaped the rain outside whilst enjoying several dishes such as spicy Thai soup which has to rival the best Tom Yum soup I've had anywhere. We were staying next door in the Abbey Hotel (but sadly were not offered any discounts or freebies as a result of this!) - but it was particularly convenient in the rain! I've been twice and if I'm ever in Penzance again, I'll make it a 3rd time without doubt.

We were staying in The Abbey Hotel next door so Slipway is dead handy. Really well cooked food. Husband had beautifully cooked and super fresh fish with peas done in French style with lettuce. I had the veggie option which was a platter of scrummy things like onion and chick pea bhaji (?) with mildly spicy mango dip, hummus, home made flat bread, vegetable korma, red slaw. Lots of marvellous flavours all on one plate. Will definitely return next time in area. Try for a table with a view.

If you are looking for an entertaining dining experience in Penzance, and are not too cost-conscious, then The Slipway could be well worth a try. We found both the service and the food to be excellent. Special mention must go to the hilarious presentation of our starters, cucumber soup with scallops. The soup itself was served in the scallop shells, balanced on a full supporting cast of ramekins and fruit nets. Someone in the kitchen had gone to a lot of trouble to make us laugh ! Our sea-bass mains were deliciously fresh and were inventively accompanied by a variety of tasty morsels. For dessert we somewhat guiltily chose the lemon curd and lemon sorbet trifle which more than replaced calories consumed earlier in the day on a 10-mile walk. The décor was fun and the atmosphere was friendly but unpretentious. We will recommend to friends.

On my first visit we just had the street food. Not particularly impressed - yes it is cheap, but you only get what you pay for. We weren't even offered the a la carte menu that evening. Waitress was obviously very new to the job . She put one of our dishes down on table next to us and proceeded to rearrange the food with her bare hands because 'it fell over' before putting on our table. We were all so stunned we didn't pass comment!!Second visit - and everywhere deserves a second chance - was unfortunately another bad experience. Three people behind the bar all looked up when we walked in and then carried on talking to each other. It took us to speak to them first to let them know we had booked but they were too busy falling out between themselves to be bothered with customers. The menu choices were very poor - there was steak on offer but cooked sous vide so you couldn't choose how you wished it cooked.Wine list was good but extremely expensive compared to the same brands in other restaurants in Penzance.Just wondering if the positive reviews come from guests of the hotel next door who receive a complimentary dinner on their first night???Would we go back, not unless there was a change of management, waiting staff and chef.

Catering for the hotel next door, the restaurant seemed extremely busy/popular which was a good sign. Our mains and puddings were equally wonderful and I even had to take a picture of my husbands main course for the record! We were delighted to be offered garlic crispy muscles and mouthwatering balsamic vinegar and olive oil with bread as a compliment from the chef. For starters I had the bacon and egg pie, for the main course I had the fillet of poached cod served with a traditional fish and chip garnish (the pea texture was lovely, mushy paste with boiled peas) and for desert I had coco Chanel. we arrived 6:30 and there was 12 of us pre-booked for their festive menu booked for 7pm and we didn't get any food until 1 hour later and food quality was awful and they kept getting the menu wrong and missed someone completely so they had to wait. me and another were waiting for a side of pigs in blankets each which came after everyone had finished our meals and when they finally arrived they weren't worth the wait. £2.49 for just 3 undercooked sausages with hardly any bacon on them after my meal. other meals were undercooked as well. there was a hair in my meal and they were not even busy and the customer service from the women with glasses wasn't great and the staff were rude and at the end they kept overcharging everyone. there is poor hygiene in the kitchen from what I saw as well. wearing hoodies and no hairnets. its obvious why this place wasn't fully booked for the Christmas menus. if your reading this do yourself a favour go Wetherspoons instead.

A limited menu. Asked for a pint of lime and soda and a pint of blackcurrant and soda. The waiter said they didn't have soda, but suggested lemonade instead, which we accepted. When we had finished our bland food and got the bill, we found that the charge for each drink was £3.25 for the lemonade and £1.85 for the shot of cordial!!! We stayed at a different P Inn as part of the same holiday and paid £1.20 for a pint of lime and soda. How can there be such a huge discrepancy for the same drinks with the same company.???When we queried the price the barman laughed!! What a rip off! Avoid at all costs

Had the original chicken cornish pasty. Lovely flavour. Very filling. Great all round.
