The Skiddaw Hotel Restaurant in Allerdale

Booked on recommendation from hotel. Arrived and waited at the entrance to be seated as the sign advised. Waiter had 2 tables in total and couldn’t manage to acknowledge our arrival. Walked past us 3 times without eye contact. Contacted front desk to ask if we were in the right place and could be seated, host explained the waiter would see to us following taking orders. At 8 months pregnant, I didn’t expect to be standing for a further 10 minutes to be seated for a table in an empty restaurant which we had booked. Host realised we were not impressed and seated us himself. Food was mixed. Fish pie came with veg and a good portion, tasty. Veggie pie was tastless and essentially potatoes in a pastry casing. No veg or cheese and leek sauce. Puddings ok but crème brûlée evidently pre made and cold on delivery. Service was a struggle to get. Total of 4 tables sat during our stay so expected no delays or issues due to workload. Disappointing.

Having had a couple of very good meals at Skiddaw Hotel this year, today a friend and I went there for lunch, which we had in the conservatory. My friend enjoyed her sandwich and ice cream, while I was transported straight to heaven by a most delicious chickpea stew imaginable! The divine dish was so incredible that I had to have another one for dessert! I am truly delighted to be able to write this review: when the chef produces something that excellent (which is also incredibly healthy), they richly deserve lavish praise!

Visited on 23/02/24 prior to a visit to the Theatre by the Lake. We shared some tapas which were excellent and reasonable value for money.

We ate at the Conservatory & Bar. Didn't stay at the hotel. We had a lovely table by the window to people and dog watch. Got the Hiker's Board which was fun. Some things were good...some things not so good...fun to try them all. Had a lovely time!

Great hotel! Really happy with everything at the Skiddaw after just enjoying a 2 night stay. All the staff were lovely, the room was great, the food was very nice, there are lots of bar tables for a drink in the evening. Top tip - park in the big car park behind the hotel. Go into the hotel reception and they'll create a digital parking pass for you and it will cost only £5 for 24 hours (noon to noon). A brilliant deal.

Lovely hotel in prime location . Room was fab, food very good though menu quite limited.

Stayed here in December and couldn't fault it. Room was luxurious. Stayed here 3 nights in January. Very disappointed with the room. Lighting was so poor we couldn't read at night. Also the room was very small. Breakfast was OK. Staff were excellent.

Was looking forward to tapas prepared by Mallorcan experienced chef. Staff were very welcoming and the tapas looked good when arrived. Unfortunately the Padron peppers were ridiculously hot and were sent back as too hot to eat. They were not wrinkled and covered in salt as in Spain. The Patatas bravas as served were small boiled potatoes in a tomato sauce, not roasted . Other than the chorizo sausages all the rest of the meal was bland. Suggest no one should waste your money as we did.

Fantastic Sunday lunch, the best we have had in a while. Reasonably priced and great service. The whole experience was lovely and we would definitely recommend l!

We had the Hikers afternoon tea which was a nice twist on an afternoon tea. We had a good variety of dishes which were all tasty and well presented. The meal doesn’t quite deserve 5 stars as the food would have been pretty easy for the chef to prepare. Staff were all excellent, they were very attentive and helpful.

Dinner at the Brasserie was excellent. All four of us thoroughly enjoyed our varied meals. I am coeliac-therefore strictly gluten free and was delighted to be offered a separate gluten free menu with amazing choices and advised that a designated fryer was used when necessary. To top it all the chef made me a delightful gluten free roll. Altogether a great dining experience with peace of mind. Clearly a terrific chef and friendly efficient staff. Can’t wait to return there!

Looked forward to treating my husband for father's Day. Liked the menu in particular the sharing platter as shown on one of the menu choices. The menu didn't have the sharing platter and the waiter who had all the charm of a verruca told us we should have said we wanted that when we booked. Our meal came within fifteen minutes of ordering. Mine looked like a steak and kidney pudding on a bit of cabbage, a few beans and I counted two half mushrooms. There was no red wine gravy, not taste and the five pieces of meat could well have come out of a tin. The chips were definitely oven chips and not the triple cooked ones I expected. The waiter was inattentive and when I asked him if he could pass on that the meal was awful he never offered an apology but grunted and walked away. We didn't pay for my meal and we didn't leave a tip. We weren't offered any apology and I was extremely upset as I had saved up to take my husband out and was very disappointed.

We had a lovely Sunday lunch today. Food was excellent and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. First time here for a meal and we will definitely be back.

Had lunch in the Skiddaw hotel. We have been before so know it isn’t haute cuisine, but always reasonable food. But today we had the worst soup ever. It was meant to be carrot and coriander but was just a glutinous mess. I will pretty much eat anything, but even I had to leave it. There are plenty of better places to eat in Keswick and we won’t be back. No one asked if the food was okay, so when I told them the staff didn’t really seem to care. That is disappointing. In other places they would have made amends to try to make us feel better so we would leave happy.

We pre-booked as non residents for a busy Saturday evening . We were met at the door and shown to our table , complimentary water and bread provided and drinks orders taken. The service was very good . Four different adult main courses , fillet cooked perfectly and childrens menu kept our 7yr old happy. Thank you for a lovely evening .

some of the previous reviews regarding the tapas certainly didn’t do justice to the food we had tonight, every morsel of the 5 separate dishes were delicious. Only regret is leaving it till the last night of our stay and therefore not being able to have it again!

This was a very nice surprise! It was very busy when we arrived and we were warned there could be a 45 minute wait for food. We weren't in a hurry. I ordered vegetarian tapas and the others had fish and chips. The delicious, hot food arrived about 20 minutes later. The tapas dishes were very good indeed. The others said their fish and chips was excellent. The staff were so pleasant and attentive. I do not recognise where some of the reviews come from. It was so far from our pleasant experience.

My review is that of a non-resident of the hotel, dining in the restaurant expecting to have a Tapas meal. We ate on a busy Friday evening following the switch on of the Xmas Lights in the town. We had booked in advance. The hotel bar and conservatory area was very busy. We made our way to the Restaurant and waited to be seated by the door by the sign that said to do so. Approx 4 staff walked past us in and out of the Restaurant before we were finally acknowledged and our table was pointed out to us across the room - we made our own way to the table rather than being taken to it. It was immediately obvious from the raucous behaviour and four letter language that there was a party of approx a dozen men also dining. We received very good table service, especially from Ana, and our drinks were very nice, as was the basket of warm breads. The tapas however, was disappointing and somewhat out of place in this restaurant. The patatas bravas and meatballs were good but only having a portion size of 2 pork skewers and croquettes that were more the size of mozzarella sticks, were poor. I would not recommend this restaurant for tapas - rather go to Es Bar in Keswick - but it was a nice restaurant - not even sure why they have a tapas menu. The management did not address the bad behaviour of the raucous table who dominated the atmosphere for all other diners.

Contrary to a previous reviewer we thoroughly enjoyed our tapas selection at the hotel. We chose to sit in the informal conservatory which was a lovely place to watch the Christmas lights being put into place ready for the festivities. We picked 6 tapas to share between us; 3 meat, 1 fish, & 2 veggies. Nice to eat something a bit different in a relaxed setting. Happy to visit again.

Booked for family meal in restaurant, limited choice on menu, order taken for our chosen desserts and then later told these were not available, I will definitely not be returning. The one good thing is that the actual restaurant is very comfortable and cosy.

Had the tapas for 2. The worst tapas ever. Cheap ingredients. Chorizo tasted off, which it probably was as myself and my wife were both sick in the night. The croquettes were tasteless deep fried sticks. Calamari was ok. The only plus point was the friendly Spanish waitress.

The staff were welcoming, courteous and helpful. The meal was enjoyed by myself and my husband I had the duck, I would have it again if we eventually get back there, it was so tender. A pleasant evening was had which was the main thing.

We ate here last night and what a treat. We've not been to Keswick for a few years and previously found it to be more pub grub. However, the meal here was fantastic. Hubby had the duck and I had drunken chicken with side of beef dripping chips, it was absolutely delicious, special mention to sauce that came with the duck! Had raspberry delice and cheese for desert and a bottle of wine. Bill was £84, for the quality of food and being Lake District this felt really reasonable, will be back next time we visit

Had a really enjoyable evening. Had booked a week before and the manager Neals had promised to provide a sauce with steaks we knew members of our party would order and which the restaurant did not offer and sure enough they provided it without a hitch ... very impressed! Our server Kevin was excellent and provided us with seemless service; he was friendly and polite and joined in with our friendly banter .. helped to make our evening all the more enjoyable. The food was amazing; I had the duck which was absolutely delicious, the steaks were cooked as ordered and the chicken 'was the best ever!' If there was one niggle .. they ran out of Cumberland Ale! but with transport and supplies being issues these days no fault is warranted. Well done Brasserie31 you ticked all the boxes. Will see you again no doubt and thoroughly recommend.

Our waitress Ana was incredible. My partner has gluten, onion and garlic intolerance which makes her very unwell. Ana gave us a gluten free menu and made sure to check with the kitchen once my partner had chosen, to see if it contained any onion or garlic and made substitutions where necessary. I proposed to my partner the day before on top of Mount Skiddaw and wanted somewhere special to take her for lunch the next day. This place did not disappoint. We went to the Brasserie 31 for my wife's birtday meal. I did not inform them of that, but it was great, we had a nice table and the food was great, Fine dining at a reasonable price, But the service was even better, thnaks to the Spanish Waitress, who made us laugh a few time. Certainly recommend and will visit again in the future. Thanks Again.

We ended up being able to go out for our wedding anniversary at the last minute. We booked in trepidation as this was one of the few places with availability. We needn't have been worried. It was excellent, waiters who couldn't do enough. just the right balance of attentive but not over the top. Food and drinks were excellent, really interesting takes on things and obviously chef who is creative. We were very happy with our meal and then we got complimentary prosecco for our anniversary. Definitely recommend.

Keswick was very busy, so we looked for somewhere where we could book a meal a few days in advance. We had one of the best meals we've had in years. I had belly pork black pudding chorizo roasties and a very imaginative mix of stir-fry veg. Good cheerful service from our Spanish waitress - we asked her to pass on our thanks to the chef.

Although regular visitors to Keswick we had never eaten here before. Will definitely be back! Pleasant staff (who although were clearly very busy), paid attention and treated you beautifully. I recently had a holiday in Keswick and of all the restaurants I dined in this was definitely my favourite. We knew the August Bank Holiday weekend would be busy so we wisely booked ahead to be sure we would be able to eat at the Brasserie at Skiddaw. The food we had was cooked to perfection and the service was excellent too. I cannot write this review without giving a special mention to Ana our waitress. She was friendly and professional – a true asset to the restaurant. If I return to Keswick for another holiday without a shadow of a doubt this would be the first restaurant I would try to reserve a table at. Definitely recommend.

Probably the best restaurant in Keswick; we certainly rated it that during our 5-night trip there.Excellent service, especially from Ana who was extremely pleasant. We both had the duck which was cooked and served to perfection and complemented very nicely with the Pinot Grigio rose wine.The ambience and decor of the brasseries could not be faulted.Absolutely recommended for a more "classy" dining experience.

We were lucky to get a booking anywhere in Keswick during our stay. The Brasserie dining area is really nice and the tables well spaced. Service was good and we had a very cheerful Spanish waitress.We went straight to mains. I had the lamb pudding which was very good. My wife went for the drunken chicken. Much of it was good but once she reached the inside of the leg/ thigh joint it was not cooked through and quite pink. A schoolboy error. My wife left it and nothing was said when the plate was taken away. Also an amateurish sign. We did not order deserts and checked out. What a shame.

Had a tour party there for three nights and they could only cope with them. A joke really for an allegedly good hotel restaurant. Best find somewhere else where service is at less of a premium

Had a super Sunday Lunch at Brasserie 31 yesterday - great food and excellent service from Awa. Food allergies taken seriously and accommodated with ease. We were surprised it was so quiet, but wouldn't hesitate to return or recommend Brasserie 31.

Lucky to get a average scoring rather than poor, saved by the service by the waiting staff who did their best and were extremely pleasant. The food overall was fairly bland at best and whoever they had working the kitchen had no idea how to cook steak and even worse food hygiene. My wife's steak which was asked for as medium rare when it finally arrived 10-15 minutes after the rest of our meals was so rare it was blue. The steak was sent back and we expected another steak but all they did was recook the same peice of steak, making it tough, unpleasant and dangerous to eat. Needless to say the steak wasn't eaten, and the waitress at least had the good sense to remove it from our bill.Never have we ever experienced the same steak returned to us when we have had to return a steak not cooked correctly. We wouldn't recommend or return to this restaurant.

Had Sunday Lunch and evening meal. We beef sirloin, which was perfectly cooked Roast potato’s were the absolute best as were the rest of the vegetables.We also had Tapas for an evening meal each dish was Superb. Can’t wait for my next visit. Waiting staff could not have been more helpful or attentive. You could also request more vegetables or potatoes but we got more than enough. We did get more gravy as we do like quite a bit.

Wonderful food and wine, all reasonably priced, I had beef cheeks followed by a Caesar salad and my husband had the shrimp starter followed by the duck. Both too full for dessert but we managed a bottle of Viognier. All very high standard. Fantastic and highly recommend.

The staff were very good despite having to wear masks. We got the impression that they were a little overwhelmed but worked hard.The food was good and so was the service. We did wonder how often the menu was changed but as we only stayed two nights it did matter that much to us.We would return what more can we say.

We were rudely welcomed upon arrival, but our waitress was lovely. The food was delicious as was the wine, but as we were in a 1920s restaurant having dinner it was odd that the soundtrack was Justin Beiber-esque pop. We also felt hurried, rather than them simply being efficient.

Fab food, great service, ralaxing atmosphere when we visit Keswick again we will be making another reservation

We had dinner at Brasserie 31 on 1 August. It would be hard to find fault with our experience. The food was all delicious, particularly the Morecambe Bay shrimp starter and the Green Tea Panne Cotta desert. The portion sizes were perfect as well, as Goldilocks might have said, not too big and not too small. The service was excellent also.

Lovely staff. Good supper and breakfast. An island in the centre of busy Keswick. very hot day bit cool in restaurant. Staff very attentive. Food good.

Food was amazing, we thought for the quality we would end up paying high prices but it was very reasonable. Dining room is beautiful and service was great. Would definitely recommend!

We had a wonderful meal here, food was delicious and great wine too. Duck was cooked to perfection, melted in the mouth. We thought it was very good value too (especially compared to some others close by)The real standout however was the staff, incredibly friendly and perfect balance of being attentive but relaxed. They set a great tone & atmosphere.

Booked for a meal during week in Keswick as everywhere was busy and a change from usual pub meals. Although the hotel is not the most attractive externally (the conservatory feels a bit dated) our meal in Brasserie 31 was excellent and good value for the quality of both food and service. Some unusual touches to menu items but all excellent

This was our first time visiting Keswick and Certainly won't be the last. The restaurant was spotlessly clean and all the staff were very attentive. The food was delicious and well presented.

Nice ambiance, but despite most tables being empty due to social distancing we were sat under a/c unit, next to till by door. Food very rich . Some good, some not so.

Couldn't fault a thing. Great service, Great Food, Great Surroundings. Excellent! If in Keswick again I'd definitely return and I'd highly recommend.

We have been coming to Keswick for many years and have eaten in the conservatory within the hotel but never the brasserie. The service was great - very efficient and all the staff are very welcoming. The food was fantastic. We had the duck and fish. It was incredibly delicious. This is a fine dining menu so the portions were smaller but we were happy with that because it gave us room for dessert. We had the cheese board and the rum baba. Both were excellent. I will definitely return to this restaurant.

Stayed for 5 days with dinner bed and breakfast and it was fantastic value for money. The food and service is outstanding. Definitely an al a carte menu with great choice. The menu is rotated so you do not have the same choices all of the time. Cannot fault anything about the restaurant or staff. We keep returning every year at least once.

Having previously stayed at the Skiddaw on numerous occasions on a DB&B basis there have been a number of changes this year to the DB&B packages. Previously on this basis a table d'hote menu was included, soup, starter, main course and a dessert. You could have a steak for around a. £3 supplement and as far as I can recall you could also choose from the main menu for a supplement. You are now given a £30 allowance. We weren't told of these changes upon booking. Starters are £8.50 Dessert is also £8.50 and mains start from £14 for a ceaser salad up to £26 for a steak.I notice that many recent reviews have been extremely critical of the food and the service,however we found the food that we had to be very good, flavoursome and nicely presented. I would say that we preferred the table d'hote menu as it was certainly more varied and also obviously much better value We had to pay an additional cost for each meal each evening of our 3 night stay. The restaurant has recently been refurbished and it looks beautiful. Lovely to see some familiar faces serving us and some great new members of staff. I would certainly welcome the return of the table d'hote menu, particularly if I was staying longer then the three nights we were here this time. Myself and my husband agreed that we would honestly struggle to choose something to eat. Also there appeared to be 1 vegetarian option which frankly is ridiculous.

The menu sounds really good. I had the cod bouillabaisse- the description sounded amazing, should have been full of flavour- unfortunately it was totally tasteless, cod had no flavour and the sauce/stew was totally bland. The portion was so small that I actually called in to the pizza place next door when we left. I’d definitely advise to stay well clear of this restaurant, the menu sounds fantastic, the food is a different story.

I ordered sirloin beef with yorkshire pudding and then strawberries with ice cream as dessert.The dessert arrived first and duck was served in place of the beef. I returned the duck and then the beef arrived without fork and knife. I asked fork and knife twice but the waiter ignored me. A friend of mine ordered beef as well but it arrived 30'later.

We ate here in the conservatory on a very busy evening during half term.The conservatory at the front serves the same food as the bistro but you can’t book. Which was perfect for us as we stupidly hadn’t booked and the entire town was packed.The food was really nice with a good selection. There were a couple of good vegan options and it was all of a really high quality.Not the cheapest but nice food.

The chef really tries to provide a range of choices to suit all palates. We dined on three consecutive nights and never felt any inclination to go elsewhere.

Habitaciones muy cómodas comida excepcional.Me sentí muy seguro con todas las precauciones de Covid en su lugar.Encontramos que el bar carecía de ambiente, así que tomamos nuestra copa antes de cenar en The Inn on the Square.Excelente estancia y volveremos el año que viene.

We did not stay here. Just dropped in for two coffees and two tea cakes served in the sun lounge at the front. £13.80 what! come on I believe in fare pricing to ensure staff are paid correctly but that is just greedy.

We visited Keswick today ( an excellent shopping town ) and enjoyed a light lunch at the Skiddaw Hotel. Warm welcome, no messing about service and excellent quality food......

Good quick service in their conservatory area with lovely food - even though Keswick very busy the staff were very welcoming and great menu available with good covid measures in place
