It's cheap, but if something isn't good then it's not cheap. The chicken fillet burger - left me speechless. Mini small piece of meat - little lettuce and then partially wilted - no sauce, just portion sachets (despite the environment)! In the men's toilet there is only cold water and you have to turn down the tap to get water - so you have to take turns washing your hands, which doesn't work well. I feel sorry for the waitresses - they were attentive - but with a kitchen like this 👎🏻

Ordered Fish and Chips and was given Chips but no fish, Good pricey portion of chips for £11, Was also given attitude on ordering after they shouted ‘Chicken order’ and nothing else because we’d ordered Chips and Nuggets aswell as the Fish and Chips, If you’re going to give attitude make sure the orders actually correct before coming at the customers! Also don’t think it’s very hygienic to be on your phone whilst prepping customers food! Overall a brilliant experience from all of the staff involved!

The three ladies there were very rude. One was on the phone chatting and ended up missing the fish off our order (£7wasted great as we had walked to the lake to eat). Shouted chicken nuggets and expected us to collect the order when usually they shout all the contents so you know it’s yours after making you wait so long. Was given attitude after asked if it was just chicken nuggets or the fish and chips as well. Need sort staff out as clearly was just nuggets after forgetting the fish 👍 maybe try giving receipts out so when you mess up we can show you proof. Recommend the chippy round the corner tho! Fast and efficient.

I never considered myself a religious man. I had nothing against faith, but it always seemed like something for other people—the kind who saw the face of the Virgin Mary in their toast or claimed their dog could sense spirits. Me? I believed in what I could see, what I could touch. And then I saw Christ in the toilet of *Old Keswickian Fish & Chips Restaurant*. It was a drizzly evening in Keswick, the kind where the rain isn’t heavy but persistent, clinging to your skin and soaking into your bones. I’d been walking for hours, doing nothing in particular, just letting the streets and my thoughts carry me. Eventually, hunger set in, and I found myself at Old Keswickian, ordering a large cod and chips. I’d barely made it through half before my stomach lurched—too much grease too quickly. I set my food down and made my way to the bogs at the back, pushing open the door to that familiar chippy toilet scene: cracked tiles, a single flickering light, the distant hum of a hand dryer someone had given up on fixing. And then, as I went to flush, I saw Him. Just above the waterline, on the porcelain curve of the bowl, was a face. A smudge, maybe just a trick of grime and shadow, but unmistakable. Long, solemn features. A beard curling at the edges. Eyes that looked right through me, filled with something deeper than just a random stain could hold. I blinked. Looked away. Looked back. Still there. My breath hitched, my heart hammering in my chest. There was no reason to feel afraid, but I did—because for the first time in my life, I felt something beyond myself, beyond the everyday dullness of things. A warmth spread through me, like a candle flickering to life in my chest. I stood there for I don’t know how long, staring, hands trembling, my entire world tilting on its axis. Someone banged on the door and shouted for me to hurry up, but I barely heard them. I walked out of that toilet different. My chips had gone cold, but it didn’t matter. Because I believed.

I was visiting Keswick and had seen lots of people walking around with fish and chips. The cravings got to me so when I walked past the old Keswickian which had a big queue of people eagerly waiting for food, I knew that I had to try some. I order cod with chips, mushy peas and curry sauce. Fish had a nice crispy batter and the chips were crispy. The curry sauce delicious but I have to say the mushy peas weren’t the best I have had. Overall, if you are in Keswick and you are craving fish and chips, I recommend coming here for some tasty food but I would say the place is slightly overrated and I wouldn’t say it is the “best fish and chips shop in Cumbria” like it claims to be.

The food at the Old Keswickian is a great price, tastes excellent, the quantity of it is amazing and the building itself is lovely. We did want to use the restaurant however the menu isn't great for those with allergies like one of our party and left after some rude and accusatory remarks from one of the staff that we were only there to use the toilet (which are for patrons only). If you can't eat anything off the menu then you aren't going to stay when other places in Keswick offer options. I will add this was only one member of staff, the others were lovely but it only takes one to ruin an experience. Perhaps they were having a bad day? I don't know but it didn't exactly make us feel welcome in the restaurant, the takeaway however was great and the cones of chips are generous.

So sad to see bored wait staff resting their head in their hands on a Bank Holiday Sunday, who can’t be bothered to cook a battered sausage at 5 pm. Came to this chippy a week ago, found the girl behind the takeaway counter to have an attitude from the get go. I understand that working with people can be stressful, especially during busy periods, however I am a polite customer and don't expect rudeness, with customers being addressed as "you" when giving out orders. When my order was ready, the girl literally threw my meal down onto the counter causing the battered sausage to roll onto the counter and had to be caught by myself before it fell on the floor. Both servers behind the counter saw what happened and just blankly looked at me without even apologising!? The battered sausage itself was extremely dry and cardboard like as if it had been sat out for hours. My boyfriend's fish and chips were nice however. It's just a shame about the poor service we received and that other negative reviews about service seems to have not been taken seriously and have been responded to with sarcastic comments

Monday 15/7/24 WE were at the Keswick Convention & went in this well known chippie that you can't miss at the top of the town at 4.45 pm for our 🐠 & 🍟 Seating downstairs was closed off 🔒 & I had to struggle up the narrow stairs & we sat at the table for 2 at the window 🪟 The smallish thin fish🐠~ ~ came with crispy batter on it & it tasted ok BUT I had to leave a load of small chips that were far too crisp. Some folks might like that, but for me I wish they had binned them. I had a good large pot of T for 2 & I folded up a napkin to sit the tea pot on it, to stop the heat disapating from it. I was told by a friend that they don't accept LEGAL Scottish notes only England ones, but fortunately I had English ones that u used to pay for the meals. So it might be worth bearing that in mind. It only cost for the two of us £23 & that's for a pensioners special AND it also included a large pot of T & that's really cheap. So in you go & let them know - if you don't want crispy hard chips 🍿

First night in Keswick we popped in here for chips as it was the best reviewed chippy in the lakes on TripAdvisor according to the signs. There are three chippies in Keswick which we tried in our weeks stay, and this is firmly in third place. Chips were far too crispy and dry. The gravy was a slurry of lumps. Service was a bit mental too. After ordering I was given my gravy in a pot while we waited for three portions of chips. Which turned up with a big wait between portion one and two and the third portion randomly plonked on the far end of the counter from the other portions...

Starters were excellent, it was the main courses that were poor, I ordered off the special board, chicken stuffed with Brie, and cranberry topping, which was very good, ordered with seasonal veg, but came with a large plate of salad, waitress came to check if everything was OK, informed her about it, went to check with chef, and returned, and apologised, that chef hadn't looked at the order, and just served it with salad, and asked if I wanted veg instead, but I had eaten all the chicken part, so refused. Partner ordered Thai green curry, and this came with way too many green and red peppers in, and that knocked the edge off their meal too. Whether it was due to new staff, or just went on a bad day, who knows, but has put us off returning again. Like I said earlier, it was excellent the lat two times we went, so can't understand why today was so poor .

Doncha just love the word “Brossen”? Means fit to burst after a meal, in the local slang. And, whilst you might love the name, doncha just hate it when you’re the only customers in a restaurant. It means there’s zilch atmosphere and no-one else’s food to weigh up when it’s being brought to their table. Well, that was it on a Monday evening in the town centre – the only other occupied tables were just finishing off and waiting to pay as we sat down at 7.30. It’s a nice, modern room which starts its day as the Inn on the Square’s breakfast room (also available to non-residents) before becoming a “proper” restaurant as the day goes on. It’s bright, furnished in what I suppose is a Scandi style (think posh IKEA) with good sized tables , nicely spaced apart so, if anyone else had been there, they wouldn’t be ear-wigging your conversation. As suggested by the restaurant name, the menu is meat heavy and vegetarians will struggle to find much choice. But, for we omnivores, there’s plenty to go at. We both chose the same starter – a Cumbrian rarebit. Two thick slices of toast, topped with a proper rarebit. Cumbrian ale mixed with Torpenhow organic cheddar (from all of 13 miles away), with an onion and black garlic relish. It’s really nice. One of us did order steak as a main course . Well, I suppose one of you has to as you’re in a steakhouse. A flat iron accurately cooked as requested, but a tad lacking in flavour. It comes with a nicely griddled half of Little Gem and some roasted cherry tomatoes. And fries, of course. A chicken burger was loaded up with all sorts of stuff – chillies, onion, tomato, avocado and more of that organic cheddar. It comes with fries and a crisp onion ring. Only one of wanted dessert. Yes, that’d be me. A lovely blackberry and apple crumbel, with its own little jug of custard. It might have been the best dish of the evening. Service throughout had been attentive. Now, you might say that, as the only customers, it really should be attentive. But the guy was good and I’m sure he’d still do the business even when busy. On the dot of 8.30, there was an almighty crash. It was the shutters coming down in the kitchen. Yes, they were done for the evening and so were we.

I recently stopped by and had a delightful vegan egg mayo sandwich, accompanied by a lovely side of slaw. The generous fillings were a highlight - it's clear they don't skimp on the good stuff! The crumble flapjack was also a treat with its satisfyingly crumbly texture and great taste. My only suggestion for improvement would be to consider adding a vegan crepe option to the menu, particularly a sweet one. With biscoff spread, vegan chocolate and fresh fruit being popular vegan-friendly ingredients, a crepe option like this could be a great addition. Overall, though, I enjoyed my experience and would recommend The Wild Strawberry to fellow vegans!

I love this cafe , but unfortunately on this occasion the bread was dry . Can not understand why someone would make a sandwich knowing the bread was dry
