We visited here at the end of our last trip to Keswick and vowed to return. In fact, we returned twice in the same week! The hotel and restaurant were refurbished in the last few years and it has been completed tastefully. However, that needs to be backed by high quality food and service and no need to worry there. On visiting last time we both had the seabass and it was so good, we had it again on our return. It always seems mean to only get one fillet but no such worries here. These are backed up by really tasty new potatoes and Mediterranean vegetables together with a tomato sauce. Every element of the dish tastes fantastic and also complement each other. Forcing ourselves to try something else we had fish pie on our second visit. This can often sound interesting but be bland. Not here, we big chucks of salmon and haddock swum in a tasty cream sauce. Supporting Summer greens complimented the pie well. A final word on the service. As excellent as the food, with special mention to Lanie who is a hard worker and knows the right blend between being professional and friendly. A credit to the restaurant. We look forward our next visit to Keswick and Brasserie 31.

Excellent food, delicious ! Stephen very welcoming and helpful. Laura very attentive (another gentleman serving and working the bar could learn by them to keep his loud volume voice down as we didn't appreciate having to listen to his chatter by the bar area) We loved the decor and seating, very cosy and welcoming.

Spent our last evening in Keswick here for our evening meal. After reading previous reviews we were a little sceptical but we needn’t have worried. What a wonderful evening spent here, the hosting and waiting staff were amazing, very attentive. Each course that arrived was like artwork on a plate but also full of flavour. My wife is vegetarian so we sometimes struggle to get decent choices for her but she had the Homity Pie which she said was delicious. My sirloin steak was cooked to perfection and the desserts were just superb, very well presented. We will definitely return on our next visit to Keswick. Ps don’t confuse this restaurant with the conservatory at the front, two different restaurants !!

We called in for a Sunday lunch. This was the worst Sunday lunch I have ever had. The meat was bland, tasteless, pink, impossible to cut and as tough as old boots. When my partner was half way through his meal they asked if everything was ok. I explained that it wasn’t and that the beef was too tough, I was struggling to cut it and it was too pink. I managed to rive off one tiny piece to try it and it was awful. When my partner was almost finished his meal the waiter offered to take it back to the kitchen and do something with it or bring something else I declined. As you never know what they do to your food when you send it back and I didn’t want to delay our day. When they cleared the plates I explained again that I had only eaten the roast potatoes (no yorkshire pudding as gluten free and no price reduction) the rest was inedible (see photos). The waiter said he would speak to his manager but never came back to us and we waited awhile. I wrongly assumed as a gesture of goodwill they might have taken my meal off the bill completely or just charged me half price. But no they insisted the bill had to be paid in full as it wasn’t their fault as they had offered to get me something else. They also explained they serve the beef medium rare and made this out to be my fault. To be fair I had already decided on gluten free roast beef before looking at the menu so I didn’t spot this or I might have asked for it to be served less pink (but I imagine this would have made the meat even tougher). Awful avoid terrible food and service.

Centrally located with parking at the rear. Recently redecorated, maybe that's the reason for the high prices? Overall we were happy but the little things make the difference and just let the overall holiday down. Booking was poor, We are flexible with dates etc but we were offered one option despite my explanation that we were flexible with room/dates/price. The booking clerk didn't seem interested, just wanted us off the phone. Concerned at having to pay the whole stay upfront in advance, is this a thing now? Whilst waiting for check-in numerous people wandered in from the street looking for food? No effort made to address them, they were left standing looking for guidance till they wandered back out. Disappointed with cold plates and sometimes cold food despite the prices. One bar staff seemed to be doing all the work and we often went to get our own refills if nobody was around. Be aware, most of the rooms are small, we paid over £1000 for 6 days B&B in quite a small room, advertised as Prestige. There's nothing intrinsically bad about the hotel, it misses the mark as a 4* and is only average. I think its position excuses many of its failings. Reception staff generally excellent. Room service good. Food average due to cold plates and food. Could be something special yet fails and disappoints. UPDATE: since this post we've stayed at numerous other hotels but have been given our room on, or soon after arrival. At The Skiddaw, despite very few guests we were made to sit in the reception area until EXACTLY 3pm before we could have our room to freshen up. This has never occurred before and was the determinant that we'd stay elsewhere in future. It was a mean thing to do and quite unnecessary. We knew the house staff had gone home and we aren't stupid, it was a petty act.

We wouldn't have chosen to come here if we had read the previous reviews. We would then have missed out on an amazing evening. It was excellent from the moment we entered to the moment we left. We were greeted by Lanie who was just so lovely. She was attentive for our whole time, regularly checking in on us and making sure our service ran like clockwork. Josh also delivered some of our courses and was equally lovely. Nothing was too much trouble and they both made a real impression in terms of hosting and courtesy. We loved the restaurant and the lovely feeling of privacy provided by the upmarket booths. Moving onto the food; simply fabulous! We ordered tapas, scallops and haggis scotch egg (best ever) followed by chicken supreme and fish and chips. Every dish was delicious and we commented that it was overall a better experience than the Michelin star restaurant we recently visited in South Wales. Thank you to the team for such a memorable time.

We are not dog owners but have been in the past. Strong Smell of your dog urine in our room. we had a family suite with a double room and a twin room. The smell was in the twin room just through the door. The door and door casing was scratched which look like a dog had been trying to get out to relieve itself. and it also smelled on the other side of the door in the hallway. after a few emails back and forth to the general manager of the Hotel, I did not get any joy. No apology. He said that we were lying about the smell and that there was not any smell. We won’t be staying there again.

Excellent meal for dad’s special birthday! Have always wanted to eat here and struggled to previously book a table for weekends away - happy to day the Skiddaw Brasserie did not disappoint!! The menu is packed full of starters, mains and desserts that are made from high quality ingredients and well put together dishes making choosing what to order difficult! We chose the crab, the scallops and the burrata and tomatoes starters - all beautifully presented and delicious! For mains, the cod loin, beef bourginon suet pudding and chicken - again all a delight to behold on the plate! Our meal was made extra special by a surprise birthday desert for my dad and great, professional services throughout! Would recommend to anyone visiting especially if they wish for a finer dining experience in Keswick!

Having visited the Skiddaw a few years back, and having had a lovely meal, we decided it would be our last night treat this time. But wow, what a let down. We love tapas and decided on the top end options. Goodness knows what the cheaper options would have been like. It was 3 dishes for £22. We both had the sherry ribs, spicy meatballs, fried chicken wings, calamari and chicken skewers. Where do I start? Having eaten a lot of tapas, this is the absolute worst by far, stone cold, tasteless, but worst of all, undercooked. They reheated the meatballs when we asked, which were then ok. What we didn’t realise was that the rest of it was just as cold. The ribs were completely tasteless, cold and greasy at the bottom, they were supposed to be be in sherry, so we expected sticky and sweet, they were dry, stuck together and tasted powdery. The chicken skewers were okish. The calamari was very thin and the batter was cold and not very crispy. It tasted cheap and had an odd texture. The aioli was just awful and greasy. The fried chicken wings were definitely not fried, they were cold, pale, slimy and undercooked, and most certainly didn’t taste of honey or lemon. I pointed out all of the above to the waiter, and I showed him the concern I had with the chicken (I had had to spit it out). He stated he would pass on what we had advised him of. On paying they took full payment, without even acknowledging any of our concerns. We are always happy to pay a bill, and understand something things can go wrong but to not even have it acknowledged is just rude. We also ordered a litre of sangria, out came a jug that barely half filled 2 wine glasses. I think the bartender isn’t versed in measures. It seems they couldn’t event get the basics correct. No matter what, food should be cooked, hot and have some taste, none of the above were true of the Skiddaw I’m afraid. Not even ice in our drinks. To be fair we did notice other food coming out from the main menu, and it looked and smelt delicious, it seems the tapas is just an afterthought. This was nothing like our last visit, but it will definitely be our last. They need to do better, much better.

We went there on a works day out for some lunch. The service was horrendous, the waiters need to learn how to crack a smile. Especially the girls. We were looking for a spot for dinner and saw the Skiddaws front conservatory had plenty of space, it was a nice evening, thought it would be nice to eat and people watch. Firstly, the conservatory is awful! No atmosphere, silent, no music, people not wanting to converse because it echoes like a dentists waiting room. Waited half an hour for a jug of sangria (which was awful). Ordered the tapas sharing platter and it was just plain nasty! The food was so bad and everything had gone cold. I ordered a different drink to replace the sangria and in 40 minutes it still hadn't turned up (it never turned up). We left the food and drinks, quickly paid at the bar and went to the pub for pizza! The place was quiet yet other customers were having to flag down the service to be served or ask where their drinks were. I would avoid.

We enjoyed our entire meal. BUT The place has an identity problem. Is it French, Spanish, a Tea Room? We sat near the bar in the area that feels like a brasserie. Skip past the conservatory into a different world. The fish was fresh & delicious. The apple tart was amazing! See photo. Beautiful enough to have thought I was in a highly rated Michelin restaurant. It tasted delicious. This pastry chef deserves kudos for a beautiful presentation, too. I see others found service lacking but the small town has a hospitality staffing shortage, in my opinion.

To be fair, if I could give it 2 and a half I would, but I definitely wouldn’t give it a 3. The website promised a lot and I was quite excited to go. But when we got there the restaurant is pretty underwhelming and lacking in atmosphere. You could say it was the definition of a hotel restaurant. Food was ok, but just ok. Crab starter was nice enough and the mussels main was the nicest dish, but it was just mussels and fries. Beef short rib was pretty disappointing and again compared to the dishes pictured on the website it was some brown meat on some yellow / white polenta and a fairly uninspired sauce. For the money it was a fairly disappointing dish. Dessert situation was strange. We ordered some ice creams to share which we waited quite a while for. When it came out they were fairly melted so I don’t know why they served them. The waiter said sorry they’ve been sat in the kitchen for a while (not sure why chef or him served them) but we’ll take them off the bill, if you like. In hindsight that was a question not a statement because it was still on the bill. I couldn’t be bothered to make a deal of it and the waiter came over and settled the bill without asking how everything was, which I normally feel is a sign they know it wasn’t that great. So it wasn’t a horrendous meal, but it was fairly disappointing. Ironically in the taxi there the taxi driver was saying it wasn’t that good. We were hoping they would prove him wrong!

We never book and always seem to get a table however I would recommend doing so for larger groups.

Not the first time visiting, both times not great. First time, ordered a simple beer, gin and tonic, seated outside, had to chase up the order after waiting 25 minutes. For context it looked as though there were 20 covers. Second time for dinner ordered food, Sirloin Steak for £34 and upon being asked, requested medium rare. I received a flat steak served in a bowl oddly, with around five small mushrooms and four tomatoes, and a few onion rings. Not worth the price. After finishing the meal, went to pay the bill, nobody behind the bar, nobody at the hotel reception, and although a customer said a staff member may be in the room next to the bar, I poked my head in and hollered, no response. After waiting, a member of staff arrived and I explained I had been waiting a while and was met with confusion, despite me acknowledging and understanding they may be short staffed, this was refuted. For context, there appeared to be 4 covers at the time we were there. Unfortunately will not be visiting, despite the great location.

Costly Inferior quality food & diabolical service. The website proudly advertises, “Award winning dining in Keswick”. Please do not be conned - this is not the case. I invite you to view the following photos of the substandard breakfast offerings served. After placing an order for two Cumbria breakfasts, we soon discover the sausages enriched with offal / vascular tubes. Biting into an externally aesthetically pleasing “Premium Cumbria Sausage”, our taste buds were greeted with a bitter rubbery texture. Closer inspection revealed the animal artery laced throughout the “Premium Cumbria Sausage”. At no point did staff approach to check if we were happy with the substandard quality food offered. Overwhelmed with a sudden loss of appetite, it was necessary to ‘chase’ the aloof staff, to register our food complaint and were told that they they had deducted one cup of coffee off the bill as recompense for consuming food contaminated with animal artery.

Booked on recommendation from hotel. Arrived and waited at the entrance to be seated as the sign advised. Waiter had 2 tables in total and couldn’t manage to acknowledge our arrival. Walked past us 3 times without eye contact. Contacted front desk to ask if we were in the right place and could be seated, host explained the waiter would see to us following taking orders. At 8 months pregnant, I didn’t expect to be standing for a further 10 minutes to be seated for a table in an empty restaurant which we had booked. Host realised we were not impressed and seated us himself. Food was mixed. Fish pie came with veg and a good portion, tasty. Veggie pie was tastless and essentially potatoes in a pastry casing. No veg or cheese and leek sauce. Puddings ok but crème brûlée evidently pre made and cold on delivery. Service was a struggle to get. Total of 4 tables sat during our stay so expected no delays or issues due to workload. Disappointing.

Was looking forward to tapas prepared by Mallorcan experienced chef. Staff were very welcoming and the tapas looked good when arrived. Unfortunately the Padron peppers were ridiculously hot and were sent back as too hot to eat. They were not wrinkled and covered in salt as in Spain. The Patatas bravas as served were small boiled potatoes in a tomato sauce, not roasted . Other than the chorizo sausages all the rest of the meal was bland. Looked forward to treating my husband for father's Day. Liked the menu in particular the sharing platter as shown on one of the menu choices. The menu didn't have the sharing platter and the waiter who had all the charm of a verruca told us we should have said we wanted that when we booked. Our meal came within fifteen minutes of ordering. Mine looked like a steak and kidney pudding on a bit of cabbage, a few beans and I counted two half mushrooms. There was no red wine gravy, not taste and the five pieces of meat could well have come out of a tin. The chips were definitely oven chips and not the triple cooked ones I expected. The waiter was inattentive and when I asked him if he could pass on that the meal was awful he never offered an apology but grunted and walked away. We didn't pay for my meal and we didn't leave a tip. We weren't offered any apology and I was extremely upset as I had saved up to take my husband out and was very disappointed.

My review is that of a non-resident of the hotel, dining in the restaurant expecting to have a Tapas meal. We ate on a busy Friday evening following the switch on of the Xmas Lights in the town. We had booked in advance. The hotel bar and conservatory area was very busy. We made our way to the Restaurant and waited to be seated by the door by the sign that said to do so. Approx 4 staff walked past us in and out of the Restaurant before we were finally acknowledged and our table was pointed out to us across the room - we made our own way to the table rather than being taken to it. It was immediately obvious from the raucous behaviour and four letter language that there was a party of approx a dozen men also dining. We received very good table service, especially from Ana, and our drinks were very nice, as was the basket of warm breads. The tapas however, was disappointing and somewhat out of place in this restaurant. The patatas bravas and meatballs were good but only having a portion size of 2 pork skewers and croquettes that were more the size of mozzarella sticks, were poor. I would not recommend this restaurant for tapas - rather go to Es Bar in Keswick - but it was a nice restaurant - not even sure why they have a tapas menu. The management did not address the bad behaviour of the raucous table who dominated the atmosphere for all other diners.

We ate here last night and what a treat. We've not been to Keswick for a few years and previously found it to be more pub grub. However, the meal here was fantastic. Hubby had the duck and I had drunken chicken with side of beef dripping chips, it was absolutely delicious, special mention to sauce that came with the duck! Had raspberry delice and cheese for desert and a bottle of wine. Bill was £84, for the quality of food and being Lake District this felt really reasonable, will be back next time we visit

Our waitress Ana was incredible. My partner has gluten, onion and garlic intolerance which makes her very unwell. Ana gave us a gluten free menu and made sure to check with the kitchen once my partner had chosen, to see if it contained any onion or garlic and made substitutions where necessary. I proposed to my partner the day before on top of Mount Skiddaw and wanted somewhere special to take her for lunch the next day. This place did not disappoint. We will definitely be back on our next visit to the lake district. Thank you again Martyn & Lydia

Had a really enjoyable evening. Had booked a week before and the manager Neals had promised to provide a sauce with steaks we knew members of our party would order and which the restaurant did not offer and sure enough they provided it without a hitch ... very impressed! Our server Kevin was excellent and provided us with seemless service; he was friendly and polite and joined in with our friendly banter .. helped to make our evening all the more enjoyable. The food was amazing; I had the duck which was absolutely delicious, the steaks were cooked as ordered and the chicken 'was the best ever!' If there was one niggle .. they ran out of Cumberland Ale! but with transport and supplies being issues these days no fault is warranted. Well done Brasserie31 you ticked all the boxes. Will see you again no doubt and thoroughly recommend.

I did not inform them of that, but it was great, we had a nice table and the food was great, Fine dining at a reasonable price, But the service was even better, thnaks to the Spanish Waitress, who made us laugh a few time. Certainly recommend and will visit again in the future. Thanks Again.

We ended up being able to go out for our wedding anniversary at the last minute. We booked in trepidation as this was one of the few places with availability. We needn't have been worried. It was excellent, waiters who couldn't do enough. just the right balance of attentive but not over the top. Food and drinks were excellent, really interesting takes on things and obviously chef who is creative. We were very happy with our meal and then we got complimentary prosecco for our anniversary. Definitely recommend.

Keswick was very busy, so we looked for somewhere where we could book a meal a few days in advance. We had one of the best meals we've had in years. I had belly pork black pudding chorizo roasties and a very imaginative mix of stir-fry veg. Good cheerful service from our Spanish waitress - we asked her to pass on our thanks to the chef.

Lovely hotel, reception staff member was curt when asked for a table and simply pointed to the restaurant doors. Maitre'd was efficient. Food was just passable. The 2 curries we had were far to salty, one being nearly inedible. Started of prawn was good. Won't go back
