Incredibly overpriced for very average food. The high tea is possibly the worst I’ve ever experienced, with no variety of sandwiches…they were all the same and poorly presented and for £21.95 per person I expected something far superior. It really was disappointing. The staff should smile from time to time, everything just seemed to be an effort for them,we didn’t feel welcome and wouldn’t recommend it. There are much nicer and far more welcoming tea shops in the village go to rather than here.

A nice little cafe, with some outside space and good enough space inside. A nice welcome and the order was taken quickly. However, with two cups of coffee, one slice of cake and two nothing special about coffee and a nice slice of cake. I thought, OK so far so good. But today the record for the most expensive two coffees and pieces of cake was a cafe in Guildford where a "service charge" was added to the bill. Today I think that two coffees and a slice of cake at £12.15 is now top of the list. I would expect to pay around £9.70 for the same at most other similar places. Sorry.

We found this gem by chance, the outside seating area was slightly hidden, but we got there in the end, enough room for us and our dog. It was a small back area of a small house from many years ago. But it had a hidden charm to it. It was neat and tidy, they may have even used the old outside 'privy' of the old days as the current toilet facilities. But very tastefully down. We ordered our coffees and a warm cheese scone each. There was a slight issue with the scones, but the Duty Manager dealt with it swiftly and in a very quiet but professional manner. We then opted for toasted teacakes. These were lovely to eat, especially warmed through. After speaking with the DM she told us our coffees were free. She then offered us some fruit scones as an apology. But when we told her that we'd ordered the toasted teacakes she told us that everything was on the house today! That was a very special offer we thought. As we left we offered some money to the waitress, but she refused at first. But my husband said we just couldn't not leave without offering at least a tip. The service and attitude of the staff was excellent. It certainly didn't put us off returning to The Singing Kettle. Well done to the Staff today.

We saw a 'specials' board in the window which lured us in. No prices on it, but the 'Bubble and Squeak cakes with either avocado or bacon and poached egg' sounded like a decent midday snack. It was good, as was the Earl Grey tea. But over £35 for what amounted to 2 plates of bubble and squeak, 2 rashers of bacon and a poached egg, plus tea for two? That WAS a surprise.

I LOVE avocados, but the smashed avocado made by the (extremely talented) cook on Sat 1st Aug was without doubt the best I have ever eaten. It might be a but OTT to rave about it, but the bread was soft and squidgy and the avocado was seasoned to perfection - mixed with various seeds and nuts to add delicious flavour and texture. Seriously, it was one of the finest things I have eaten - and I'd go to this beautiful village just for that - and for 'Much Ado' (which happens to be the finest book shop in the world). Cheerful, really helpful staff at the Singing Kettle and we sat in a lovely sunny spot - thank you! xx

There are some lovely tearooms in Alfriston but this is not one of them. We waited ages for some tea and when it finally arrived, it barely tasted of anything and the pot was just enough for one, not two. Alfriston is an attractive little village just about 20 minutes from Eastbourne. But relying on public transport or in this case, voluntary bus service to get there, it seems only possible on weekends. We went on a Sunday, my lady insisted we went to church. This was a unique experience with six bell ringers, ringing the church bells in the middle of the church. Something we had never seen before. Afterwards we walked over the Village Green and enjoyed walking round the little sideways and by-ways of a Sussex village. Before going back to Eastbourne we had delightful and tasty cream teas in The Singing Kettle in the village centre.

Visited here twice now, and both times I've had trouble with over-charging. Today, I ordered the cream tea (£7.50). I asked for Earl Grey - they'd run out, but recommended the Darjeeling. I said ok; when I got the bill it was £8.05 - they said the extra was because the Darjeeling costs more. I paid it, but that shouldn't have happened - at the very least they should have warned me it would cost more. It also reminded me that the last time we visited, we were overcharged too.

The scones both plain and fruity were delicious and plenty of butter and jam to accompany them. There was a choice of plain, fruit or herby. Nice clean decor with both inside and outside areas and also a toilet. Scones are baked on the premises. The customer service was very good and there was a choice of indoor and outdoor seating. The cafe discourages people using laptops. Looked to be a good selection of cakes and drinks. The lunches we saw looked good quality but there are cheaper lunches available in Uckfield. We would us it again.

It's always nice to find a cozy pub which is so accommodating of gluten free. Most of their menu items could be offered as gluten free which was such a treat. I had a lovely fish and chips followed by a chocolate honeycomb pudding.
