We were holudaying at Kirby Hill for a few days and visited this lovely local 3 times, once for drinks, once for a meal and once for desserts. Each time was a lovely experience. The landlord and landlady made us feel special and valued and nothing was too much trouble. We had a laugh and our 2 teenagers loved it....no easy task!!! The food was delicious, fresh, hot and plentiful. The onion rings are worthy of note, as was the sticky toffee pudding and chocolate bombe. Delicious! We would love a friendly local pub like this one at home and would definitely love to return.

We stayed here 21 Dec 2023 on our way to Keswick as the Pub is a motorhome stop over with prior booking. You need to be a self contained unit though. A quiet spot was given to us in the carpark with great views in the daylight. We had a very warm welcome in the pub from the owners and locals. The pub has a varied menu with a good selection vegetarian & meat eater food, plus a good selection of drinks. It seemed to be all home food cooked too. It seemed a very popular pub with the locals which is always a good sign and the Pub does a lot of charity fund raisers for local charities. It is dog friendly also to well behaved dogs.

Loved it!! Over the last few years we’ve tended to stay at Air BnBs. Problem there not many have a pub attached…… So this was a very pleasant step back in time. Communication from the start was clear and timely, I booked direct rather than through a 3rd party provider……it was cheaper…..😘 Anyway upon arrival we were shown to our room, small and compact would be the best way to describe it. But it was exactly what we wanted….. Downstairs for a pint, unfortunately arrived too late for dinner. Had a great chat with the owner who was engaging, even allowed me to buy him a 🍺 TBF he did offer to return the compliment but I was too tired to take part. Next morning, down to breakfast and partook in the offering of a full English, delicious….. Unfortunately it was early October and the promised views were unavailable due to the local fog……will have to go back and take in the full alleged majesty of it all. Bottom line, if you need somewhere for a holiday, 1 night stop or just a Sunday lunch, this is the place if you’re in the vicinity. BTW good luck with the ongoing renovations……

Hats off to Mark and Lyndsey who don't know us from Adam for taking on such a challenge in these challenging times. We will be back if you have space for us in your car park. Stayed overnight at short notice, wanted somewhere in the Richmond area and so glad we found this place. On pulling into the spacious car park we were taken aback by the stunning view and the lovely little village setting. It’s a pub with rooms but the facilities and provisions are excellent. The hosts Mark and Lyndsey have been here since November 2022 and are professional but witty and talented at what they do. Mark runs the bar and Lyndsey the kitchen and rooms. The food was fantastic, and piping hot, we had dinner as well as the complimentary quality breakfast. Four hand pulled ales available as well as lagers and cider, Guinness etc. The rooms are spotlessly clean and have everything you need from a room in a pub! We found this place by chance but will be returning as the impression it left was that good and that’s all I can say. Thanks again Mark and Lyndsey for a wonderful stay.

A wonderful place to visit.... Which we did twice. Once midweek for evening meal which was excellent. The second was for Sunday lunch. This proved to be truly amazing. For me as the only vegetarian...... This was without doubt the best vegetarian roast I have ever had. All meals were absolutely fantastic and all three of us couldn't have asked any more for quality, quantity and friendly service. Indeed, we abandoned the rest of our walk and spent the afternoon in the garden overlooking a brilliant view with a bottle of wine before our walk back across the fields to Mount Pleasant Farm Cottages. The new landlord and landlady were charming and have worked very hard to bring life and reputation back to what we gather was a failed previous management. Good luck to them and if what we experienced was their start.... The future of them and the pub is assured. Thank you for such great experiences.

We stopped by for an impromptu Sunday lunch and received a friendly welcome when we walked in. First thing was a great selection of draft ales and lagers ✅ The Sunday roast lunch was delicious! The options were roast topside of beef, roast pork or "a bit of both". Our plates arrived along with lots of perfectly cooked veg including crispy roasties, lovely buttery mashed swede, and extra gravy (without having to ask for it!). There are lots of other choices on the Sunday lunch menu and the chips we saw being delivered to the next table looked really good. We will definitely be back to try more of the food and hopefully will have room for dessert next time.

Exactly what we were looking for! Our family of 4 stayed in the family room for a quick get away in the dales. Communication prior to our arrival was reassuring and allowed mistakes that we had made. Upon arriving we were thrilled to see it was as we hoped, a rural pub with a great view of the dales on the edge of a small village. The owners greeted us with a drink and we enjoyed a much needed walk across the fields before dinner. The menu was plentiful with a great choice for the kids and vegetarians among us. The food was declared delicious by all. The bedroom had a considerate additional gift for the kids and we found the room met our needs. Breakfast was equally delicious and we were delighted to have found such a great place to stay at such short notice. Highly recommended.

Friendly welcome and it’s clear the new proprietors are trying their best but … Our Sunday lunches weren’t great, tough beef, average pork, reheated roast potatoes and tasteless leeks in cream sauce. The other veg was ok but if you haven’t got the basics of the meat and roast potatoes right the rest is superficial. My prawn cocktail starter (£7.25!) was a plateful of lettuce with a tablespoon of prawns and the garlic mushroom starter was stodgy with shop bought garlic bread. The decor is tired and in dire need of a refurb but I’m sure the new landlord will make this a priority.

We found this (one of a number of Shoulder of Mutton establishments in the area, so pay heed to the postcode. We arrived at dinnertime and had excellent food – bangers and mash and the burger. Both were excellent. The beer was very good and we had a nice chat with the landlady about dogs, the local area, and so on. The room was nice, if small, but it is a very old building. I had a fantastic night's sleep – eventually – but my other half had to take our puppy out to the car as he simply would not settle*. Every time we settled him, he would go mad and sit by the door. In the end, she most of spent an uncomfortable night in the car with him to prevent him keeping up the whole house. I was lucky as I was driving the next day. Breakfast was very high quality, but we had to put the dogs in the car as the breakfast room is the dining room. This should be borne in mind if you have a dog you cannot leave on its own. Overall, it is a lovely dog friendly pub serving excellent food in a beautiful location. * It seems another couple with dogs had been staying before us in another room and they had left bowls of wet food open all the time they were there. The smell had lingered in the room (others were in there that night) and while we couldn't smell it, the puppy probably could and this is what made him so excitable. Even after this, we'd definitely be willing to give it another go as it was a lovely place.

The accommodation was good at the Shoulder of Mutton. A small en suite but when you have a stone building of this age there will be compromises. The staff were friendly and keen to please. The beer was well kept. However food was poor. We had dinner in the restaurant the night we arrived and breakfast in the morning and it was not up to scratch,. We had to give breakfast orders the night before (not my favourite system) and my full English tuned up well and truly dried out from being left under a heat lamp. I regret leaving a bad review because the village looked stunning on a beautiful summer's evening.

This is verv different to where we have stayed before. Set on the Yorkshire dales the views were lovely. It’s a quaint pub/inn which hosts mostly locals. The owner was friendly and helpful and the breakfast was very nice. On the downside the room was small, not very warm and the bed was really uncomfortable. We booked at last minute so we were happy to get a place. It was reasonably priced and dinner last night was pleasant. I just think there is room for improvement. May be increase the price and make things more comfortable warm and friendly.

Stayed here on the 31st October 2018 as a halfway point to a trip to Edinburgh, and again on the return trip 6th November. Ideal spot out of the way with superb walking and views , we arrived late approx 9.30 pm so were too late for a meal , but we knew that from viewing the website , so no problem. A couple of beers for me and a glass of wine for the wife and off to bed. Matthew showed us to room 3 , which was a little on the small side , but it had all that we needed for one night , shower and a very comfortable bed. Breakfast was arranged for 9.00 am the following morning , spot on and well cooked English , cereals , juice , coffee and tons of toast , I was stuffed . On our return trip , 6th November , we were given room 2 , which was very much larger , with the same facilities , and a great view from the window , again we arrived late , so were too late for food , so beer and wine it was , and again breakfast was to a high standard . This is a fantastic , little old pub b&b; , so definitely not a right up to date commercial concern , and my wife and I loved it , definitely a return trip is on the cards when the weather is a bit more favourable , thank you Matthew for your great hospitality , hope your wedding next year goes as planned .

Nice 'oldy worldy' pub in a lovely location. Could do with updating in some areas

The Sign at the end of the road proudly displays open for lunch in addition to some sites on the Internet also communicating open for lunch. Great shame given the reviews we have seen for this particular pub. Seems pubs in this area need to re-communicate the revised opening times as we had the same problem at the neighbouring Bay Horse.

The place was dirty, no hand soap in ladies loos, the beer was warm, my husband ordered leg of lamb, when it arrived it was nothing more that a lamb steak for £14!! I'm just shocked that from reading the reviews people actually enjoyed their food here.

Arriving here after a robust evening walk over the hill, we were greeted by the jocular landlord. Entering, I said, "I booked a table for seven.' 'Oh,' he said, 'why are there only two of you?' Ha Ha.

Stopped for 2 nights and we had a very warm welcome from all members of staff, the food is nice but a bit expensive for the portion size, you have to order breakfast the night before the morning, the breakfast is nice but you have to ask for beans. I must add nothing is a problem and everybody is happy to oblige. There is room for improvement on the décor in the pub itself. We had a annexe room which was clean and tidy and lots of room, the bed was hard and a small double so i slept on the sofa couch which was rock hard.

Met friends here for tea, there was another couple in when we got there which was 7.30pm, nobody else came in the whole time we were there. The food was basic but okay. Won’t be going back in a hurry.

Having arrived on a Sunday afternoon and not wanting a Sunday lunch we were offered a beef sandwich if we wanted something lighter even though this was not on the menu. This was lovely beef and came with an accompanying side of roasted potatoes. The staff were welcoming, accommodating and genuinely very helpful. Our dogs were also welcomed into the bar if not the restaurant which was fine by us. The decor is a little old fashioned but everywhere is very clean & tidy. There are some great views from the decking in the beer garden as well as some nice walks in the vicinity.

As many of you know I’m Celiac and I like to let fellow Celiac’s where to eat. Just excellent ratings here!! As soon as I said I was Celiac the Land Lady and her husband knew exactly what they were talking about, the roast pork that I had was excellent the roast potatoes and mash 10-10 Now the vegetables, broccoli, cauliflower and carrots were cooked to perfection which you don’t always find unfortunately. It was all served with my very own gluten free gravy boat ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Really like this place. We had a family meal here on a Saturday evening, and weren't disappointed. Yorkshire portions of really good pub grub -- two pie and chips, and two hunter's chicken -- that totally hit the spot after a walk, and really cheap too. Great atmosphere, and excellent ale. It's on my list of places to go back to.

We were a group of 8 friends staying in nearby Ravensworth and decided to give this place a go. We were glad we did! Of the four evening meals we had out in the Richmond area, this was the one we enjoyed most. The menu was imaginative, presentation was excellent and, above all, the food was delicious. I had a kale, butternut squash and feta frittata which was just lovely. The others had dishes ranging from monkfish to venison casserole and there were happy faces all round. Would definitely return here. It is a little out of the way and that may have been the reason there weren't many people there on a Thursday evening, but it's certainly worth a drive out from Richmond or wherever.

The staff were excellent, menu was good and place was very clean. Went as a table of 5 for Sunday lunch, beer on Draught was lovely and overall we were very happy. Starters were great, deserts were also very good but main Sunday lunch was a little dissapointing. Meat was a bit bland and fatty (we tried lamb and beef) and roasties were a bit tough. Yorkshire puddings and veg were good, gravy also lovely, just lacked that spark. Left full and price was less than expected. Overall a good 8/10
