Not being local to the area, travelling through earlier in the day for a walk in the Lake District, we wanted a nice cosy traditional pub tea in the way back home, and this venue did not disappoint. A warm and welcoming atmosphere and food to really write home about! Compliments to the chefs! If you come across this beauty, be sure to drop in! Shame we live over 100 miles away, else we’d definitely be here more often!

What a fantastic pub this is. Mark and Lyndesy run a warm and welcoming place, the beer is top draw and the food is amazing. The best thing about the pub is the atmosphere, we were made to feel very welcome and all the locals we spent the days with were very friendly. By the end of our week staying at a local cottage we felt right at home as did our two dogs. Brilliant traditional country village pub and a must visit if you are in the area. We will certainly be back to the area again.

Traditional pub servicing cooked to order lunches. We selected from the lighter lunchtime menu , we all had the broccoli and Stilton soup, which was superb full of flavour and hearty. For our main courses we made separate selections, the ham and eggs were excellent as indeed were all our dishes. Service was great we felt very welcome including our dogs in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Certainly well worth the visit. Thank you

A party of four of us stayed at the Shoulder of Mutton on 24th June for 3 nights, it is situated in a quiet village of about 15 houses and a church, in a beautiful rural setting. The rooms were lovely, very clean, the rooms had refreshments, coffee, tea, chocolate & biscuits. The breakfasts were the best I've had in a pub, and the evening meals were great. Mark & Lyndsey were brilliant hosts, and the staff were great, also the locals were very friendly. This place is a hidden gem

We was stopping nearby in a cottage so booked in advance for the Sunday afternoon. There was 6 adults and a child as we sat down in this busy welcoming local. We opted for the 3 course Sunday lunch offer giving us great value for money. The beef with vegetables were plentiful and delicious as was the steak and ale pie. I had prawn cocktail for starters with sponge pudding for desserts all of which were spot on. Our total bill came to £155 with drinks so we was happy and very full after our enjoyable visit.

A well hidden little spot found purely by trawling the internet for ideal places to eat. Rarely do you go to anywhere nowadays and feel that your visit was worthwhile. That cannot be said of the Shoulder of Mutton. From the very first footstep inside , the convivial host Mark was accepting us like long lost friends. Not over bearing but genuinely welcoming us . The food was very nice and the prices were more than acceptable. Compliments were passed to the chef, Lyndsay who also spoke to us and again it was as if we had known them both for years. A very welcoming place that is deffo on our list of places to re visit when next back in the area.

The Mother's Day Sunday lunch at The Shoulder of Mutton in Kirby Hill was a delightful experience. The cozy atmosphere, accompanied by friendly staff, created a warm and inviting setting. Additionally, the welcoming dog-friendly policy made it even more enjoyable. The establishment's accommodation of furry companions enhanced the family-friendly atmosphere, allowing everyone to partake in the celebration. We stayed here 21 Dec 2023 on our way to Keswick as the Pub is a motorhome stop over with prior booking. You need to be a self contained unit though. A quiet spot was given to us in the carpark with great views in the daylight. We had a very warm welcome in the pub from the owners and locals. The pub has a varied menu with a good selection vegetarian & meat eater food, plus a good selection of drinks. It seemed to be all home food cooked too. It seemed a very popular pub with the locals which is always a good sign and the Pub does a lot of charity fund raisers for local charities. It is dog friendly also to well behaved dogs.

Loved it!! Over the last few years we’ve tended to stay at Air BnBs. Problem there not many have a pub attached…… So this was a very pleasant step back in time. Communication from the start was clear and timely, I booked direct rather than through a 3rd party provider……it was cheaper…..😘 Anyway upon arrival we were shown to our room, small and compact would be the best way to describe it. But it was exactly what we wanted….. Downstairs for a pint, unfortunately arrived too late for dinner. Had a great chat with the owner who was engaging, even allowed me to buy him a 🍺 TBF he did offer to return the compliment but I was too tired to take part. Next morning, down to breakfast and partook in the offering of a full English, delicious….. Unfortunately it was early October and the promised views were unavailable due to the local fog……will have to go back and take in the full alleged majesty of it all. Bottom line, if you need somewhere for a holiday, 1 night stop or just a Sunday lunch, this is the place if you’re in the vicinity. BTW good luck with the ongoing renovations……

Stayed overnight at short notice, wanted somewhere in the Richmond area and so glad we found this place. On pulling into the spacious car park we were taken aback by the stunning view and the lovely little village setting. It’s a pub with rooms but the facilities and provisions are excellent. The hosts Mark and Lyndsey have been here since November 2022 and are professional but witty and talented at what they do. Mark runs the bar and Lyndsey the kitchen and rooms. The food was fantastic, and piping hot, we had dinner as well as the complimentary quality breakfast. Four hand pulled ales available as well as lagers and cider, Guinness etc. The rooms are spotlessly clean and have everything you need from a room in a pub! We found this place by chance but will be returning as the impression it left was that good and that’s all I can say. Thanks again Mark and Lyndsey for a wonderful stay.

A wonderful place to visit.... Which we did twice. Once midweek for evening meal which was excellent. The second was for Sunday lunch. This proved to be truly amazing. For me as the only vegetarian...... This was without doubt the best vegetarian roast I have ever had. All meals were absolutely fantastic and all three of us couldn't have asked any more for quality, quantity and friendly service. Indeed, we abandoned the rest of our walk and spent the afternoon in the garden overlooking a brilliant view with a bottle of wine before our walk back across the fields to Mount Pleasant Farm Cottages. The new landlord and landlady were charming and have worked very hard to bring life and reputation back to what we gather was a failed previous management. Good luck to them and if what we experienced was their start.... The future of them and the pub is assured. Thank you for such great experiences.

We stopped by for an impromptu Sunday lunch and received a friendly welcome when we walked in. First thing was a great selection of draft ales and lagers ✅ The Sunday roast lunch was delicious! The options were roast topside of beef, roast pork or "a bit of both". Our plates arrived along with lots of perfectly cooked veg including crispy roasties, lovely buttery mashed swede, and extra gravy (without having to ask for it!). There are lots of other choices on the Sunday lunch menu and the chips we saw being delivered to the next table looked really good. We will definitely be back to try more of the food and hopefully will have room for dessert next time.

Exactly what we were looking for! Our family of 4 stayed in the family room for a quick get away in the dales. Communication prior to our arrival was reassuring and allowed mistakes that we had made. Upon arriving we were thrilled to see it was as we hoped, a rural pub with a great view of the dales on the edge of a small village. The owners greeted us with a drink and we enjoyed a much needed walk across the fields before dinner. The menu was plentiful with a great choice for the kids and vegetarians among us. The food was declared delicious by all. The bedroom had a considerate additional gift for the kids and we found the room met our needs. Breakfast was equally delicious and we were delighted to have found such a great place to stay at such short notice. Highly recommended.

Friendly welcome and it’s clear the new proprietors are trying their best but … Our Sunday lunches weren’t great, tough beef, average pork, reheated roast potatoes and tasteless leeks in cream sauce. The other veg was ok but if you haven’t got the basics of the meat and roast potatoes right the rest is superficial. My prawn cocktail starter (£7.25!) was a plateful of lettuce with a tablespoon of prawns and the garlic mushroom starter was stodgy with shop bought garlic bread. The decor is tired and in dire need of a refurb but I’m sure the new landlord will make this a priority.

Only stayed one night here on our way to a reunion close by. Very friendly welcome - nice beers and a remarkably extensive menu. Room small and basic but very clean and orderly. No problems at all in recommending this small country hotel which delivers very good value accommodation with gastro-pub cuisine.

What a great place.... fantastic atmosphere which made the meal so enjoyable we were welcomed by Shannon (working on her birthday) who said we must try the specials board.. we weren't disappointed I had locally sourced meat platter which is the best I have ever had.. will return very.

Turned up ad hoc for a meal and were made very welcome. Lovely roast dinner and veg. Great atmosphere and sensible pub-grub menu: just the ticket!

We visited here after reading some encouraging reviews and noting that “booking is essential for food”, we thought it would be a safe bet while we were in the area. Unfortunately, the 2 stars are for service along as the bar staff were very polite and helpful. They are also dog friendly which is a bonus. Other than that, the food was not impressive. We had the Sunday roast and the beef tasted of poor quality, and vegetables were not seasoned and lacked flavour. The cabbage served with the meal was pickled which wasn’t what we expected. We were still hungry afterwards but didn’t want to waste any more money on desert in case it was more of the same. The decor is very tired and the place does lack atmosphere unfortunately. We didn’t drink alcohol but they have a wide variety of ales to choose from behind the bar. We won’t be returning, sadly!

Just been for Sunday lunch with my family and was delicious. I rang to book an hour before and they fitted us in no problem . Lunch didn't take very long to come and staff were so friendly. Definitely recommend. Look forward to coming back. Thankyou Nicola xx

Could not recommend enough! Staff are so friendly and welcoming. They make sure to go above and beyond for customers, making sure you have everything you need. Decor is absolutely fabulous and not to forget they grow their own fresh ingredients, you don’t get a better experience than that. Food is 10/10 so flavourful, definitely will be returning.
