We stopped here for a lunch and we’re very glad we did. The food and service were both superb. Two of us had the croque Madame and one of us the ham, egg and chips. Each meal was excellently cooked and presented and service was quick and attentive. As you would expect the excellent local cheeses feature heavily in the menu and they really do take the food to another level. I definitely recommend Calvert’s.

This is a strange cafe. I ordered cheese on toast and it came on the cheapest, most basic supermarket / mother's pride style bread. OK fine, but it really wasn't cheap. Next I ordered the soup - It came with slightly better bread but a tiny, miniscule, stingy slice (I'm refraining from any jokes about people from Yorkshire being tight). As for the soup itself, it was inedible. This was by far the most salty broth I've ever encountered in my entire life. I don't even know what it was supposed to be - it just tasted like sipping on hot seawater. Had the chef oversalted, or actually just dropped a tub of salt in pot and though 'eh well'? Maybe that's how it's supposed to be and they just live with high blood pressure. Who knows. Carrot Cake was decent, but I walked away hungry, £20 worse off. Oh, nearly forgot the best bit. WASPS EVERYWHERE! Dirty plates had accumulated on many of the tables. Wasps had swarmed over to feast on the leftover jam. At one point I observed a young staff member walk over to collect some of the dishes and upon noticing the swarm, she did a 180 and noped out of there. It'd be pretty funny if it wasn't for that that I and several other customers weren't dodging the swarm (which had by now turned it's attention to my carrot cake).

We received a warm welcome here for lunch one rainy day in August. The menu is cheese heavy but delighted to find options for vegans too. The staff are very friendly and they and the delicious food made our visit memorable! Food came out quickly, hot and very tasty. We ate the rarebit with onion on top (pictured) and the vegan sriracha cauliflower dish. The salad garnishes were also delicious! Would highly recommend for an excellent meal in lovely surroundings.

Went here last week for a quick bite to eat. The lady serving was very understanding of my son’s autistic needs and kindly reserved a table while I went to get him from the car. She explained there was a larger table next to us and asked if it would be ok for him. She was really lovely. The service was fantastic! Food was so lovely and freshly cooked, very large portions for the price so very filling. Waiting for the food though did take almost an hour which my son got a little frustrated however it was really busy (lunchtime in the Easter hols). The food though was really nice and worth the wait. My son loved his plain burger and chips.

We ate here for lunch on a Saturday in February. It wasn't too busy and service was good. I had Thai vegetable curry while the others had quiche or toasties. The curry was delicious with lots of chunky veg, rice and beetroot sourdough. Drinks prices were very reasonable. £4.95 for a glass of wine (I can recommend the rose!). The only criticism would be a lack of gluten free options. The two course special menu wasn't possible to have if you were gluten and/or dairy free. My friends didn't think much of the chips although I thought they were nice!

Second time in Calvert’s, and will be the last! Cavernous empty room, dotted with tables, breakfast menu woefully dire, if you like pork no problem, if however you don’t eat it, its a problem. Breakfast menu consists of baps, with combos of egg sausage bacon, no veggie sausages, only an egg bap as veggie choice ,although they did offer me cheese on toast, which strangely is only served from 11 onwards, ( it was 10.45 so I just scraped in) husbands sausage bacon and egg bap wasn’t a bap, filling arrived between two soggy slices of cheap thin white bread ( run out of baps) making it virtually impossible for hubby to pick up his breakfast sandwich as contents tore through bread. My decaf coffee was very good, but poor husbands earl grey tea tasted of hot water, even after stewing. Service friendly and prompt, but Calvert’s reminds me of a works canteen, friends and family of kitchen staff, popping in and out, friendly place, but felt as if we were a bit of an inconvenience, won’t be returning to Calvert’s, but will continue to use creamery cafe next door, ( which now only serves sandwiches and cold food) as have never been disappointed there,

The coleslaw was herby and creamy, the coffee was rounded and smooth, the chips was perfectly fried, and the burger was one of the best patties I have ever had. The texture was fresh and meaty, it was perfectly cooked, juicy and flavoursome. And the prices were surprisingly reasonable, for the best burger I’ve had in a long time it was cheaper than most other restaurants.

I've been wanting to go here for years because I love cheese just as much as the next person. We travelled over an hour to get there and pre booked our table during the week for Sunday. It didn't start well, the lady couldn't find our reservation and made us feel like she was annoyed at us, another server had to come over and find it, we got seated with out backs to the rest of the restaurant, didn't get told about any specials, had to ask for clean cutlery and didn't get an apology for it being dirty in the first place. We ordered our food and drinks, our food came and then they decided to go make the blackcurrant squash my partner ordered but they only brought a half pint out rather than the pint he asked for. I was about 3/4 the through my meal when my coffee finally arrived, again with no apology for it being so late. I ordered the sausage and mash and it was a bit bland, nothing really special about it, however my partner did enjoy his Sunday roast. We had barely put our knives and forks down before they were taking the dishes away whilst asking if we were finished. We were asked if we wanted anything else but we could barely finish answering before the server said, just the bill then. The bill came much faster than our drinks however it was wrong, so had to get that corrected. From walking in the door of the restaurant to walking out was less than 40 mins, we felt rushed and like we were interrupting their day and being an inconvenience by being paying customers. If you're travelling to visit the cheese factory, I'd recommend going into Hawes to find something to eat and avoiding Calverts restaurant all together.

Bill came to £80.80 which i thought was good for 4 2 course meals. 2 Bottles of cider and 1 & 1/2 pints of beer and 3 coffees! The restaurant was not even half full but they were telling people it was fully booked so we were guessing the kitchen was short staffed so it was a good job we booked. We booked a table prior to visiting but still had to wait nearly an hour to recieve our starters and the restraunt wasnt full at all. My husband had soup, which wasnt bad and I had the chilli beef. The Chilli beeff presentation was poor,as was the taste. Not sure whether it was the kale but all the flavours were so strong and fought each other. When the waitress asked us if everything was OK I told her that I wasnt sure what was on the kale but it spoilt everything. She fed back my comments and came back and I was put in my place by saying that there was only salt and sugar on the kale. Not sure why it looked so greasy and tasted aweful. The pork was OK but a little dry. On the table next to us was someone from the creamery ( I think) having a meeting with staff. A bit off putting when we were waiting the hour for our meal. All in all not the treat we expected. It is a shame. If they cannot take helpful critism then all is lost. I ask the chef to try his food prior to putting it on the menu.

We visited Calverts Restaurant at the Wensleydale Creamery regularly pre-covid so yesterday was our first visit back in a couple of years and oh how things have changed! Firstly there is no longer a kids menu and my son was offered two kinds of pie or sausages as children's options. Also they did not offer kids desserts so my son had to have a full adults dessert off the main menu which he did not like and was too big anyway, a waste of £6. They did not have any roasts/dinners on and there were no specials boards. We wanted lemonades all round but was told because of a shortage of CO2 none of their suppliers were able to get lemonade (really?) and it has been an ongoing issue for quite some time (try the Spar round the corner). Also they do not do skinny lattes because they do not get skimmed milk. So was more about what they didn't have than what they did have. Service was very slow and the waitresses were just a bit weird. A 2 course lunch for 2 adults and 1 child came in at £55, which was expensive considering the very limited options available. Wouldn't go back again, especially with my son who was extremely disappointed and amazed that he couldn't even get a lemonade! I emailed to complain but just got an auto response telling me that their phone lines were busy and to keep trying. Weird. Not in a good way.

On our way to skipton we stopped at the creamery for lunch , where we ate in the restaurant not the cafe . BIG mistake. Food was bland , overpriced and very disappointing. We had chicken and cheese fritter & Welsh rabbit for starter , fritter was just awful the cheese on toast was tasty but it wasn’t on a thick slice of bread or sourdough so it was a lump of mush as the fat had soaked into the bread . We had mince beef pie & sausage for mains , not good very bland , just say warm . A touch of salt and pepper could have helped a little. We escaped the desert. I was asked if we had enjoyed the meal and I had to tell the waitress it was nowt ower meaning very mediocre and very overpriced.

Quite easily the worst place I have ever "eaten." The food was unashamedly from packets. The "pie" was disgusting, served as a wedge, the "mince" had no structure and was closer to mashed up corned beef from a can, the crust could barely be called pastry and most likely it all was bought as something similar to a tesco value pie. The mash potato must have been from a rehydrated form as it was closer to the texture of a rubber ball than mash potato. Peas were tasteless and the red cabbage would be better put to use as an embalming fluid than on a plate in a "restaurant." When asked about the meal I replied it was horrible, and ultimately I still had to pay for it, although the price of two cups of tea was knocked off (£3.90) as opposed to the £13 pounds charged for this absolute rubbish. Quite simply, save your money and go to one of the delightful looking pubs in the nearby towns, rather then spend your hard earned money here. If there were to be a good point, the staff were friendly, and it must be remembered that it is not their fault they are forced to serve such utter tripe.

Seated quickly, ordered 2 kids macaroni cheese and a farmers board- arrived in good time and was really tasty. My only gripe was the bread - now we were not asked if we wanted bread it just arrived with the board - when I got the bill there was a £3 charge for bread? The bread that we had must have been sliced a while before we were given it as it was dry. I really don’t mind paying for something I had asked for - I know it’s only £3 but it’s the principle of an added charge that we were not aware of!

Absolutely wonderful restaurant, we usually try to visit at least a few times each year (even though it’s a bit of a distance to travel). We visited recently for a Christmas Lunch and were thoroughly delighted with the meal and service. The rarebit I chose as a starter was fantastic, the picked cabbage in particular was absolutely delicious. For mains we both had turkey which was excellent too, nice as it wasn’t dry at all which many restaurants seem to struggle with. The vegetables, stuffing and other trimmings were all top quality and very tasty so all in all we felt the meal was great value. The food however is just one of this restaurants qualities, it’s other outstanding features are it’s wonderful staff and the views over the North Yorkshire countryside. Visited with family on a visit to the cheese factory. Missed put the factory bit and went straight for lunch. Pleasant surroundings, attentive staff and good food. A lot of cheese things. Opted for sweet potato curry which was very nice. Then greedily went for the ginger cheesecake. Mistake! I regretted it for the rest of the day. It was sooò rich, and sooo lovely I ate far too much of it. Be warned!

Located in the Wensleydale creamy this is a sit down waitress restaurant. We been a number of times but this time just not quiet as good. We did visit at the end of a day but 3 of our 1st choices weren’t available. We did order some soup but it was cold a clearly just put back In The microwave and brought back. It did taste lovely and the scone was very light. Home made chips lovely. And a good sized kids meal. 2 courses for 12.95 was brilliant value. Most of the menu is cheese based but it is varied. A nice touch was that we were 1st asked about dietary requirements. The staff are knowledgeable about the menu but sometimes just a bit abrupt.

This restaurant is located in the Wensleydale Creamery premises and naturally uses cheese in many of its dishes - you can even have a slice of Wensleydale with your apple pie ! The two course menu at £12.50 was very good value and the food excellent.

A very good restaurant, with a varied menu and very large portions. It is next door to a first class souvenir shop. We knew Kit Calvert in his final years, when he had an antiquarian bookshop in Hawes. We are sure he would be proud of what has been achieved here, in his name.

An excellent restaurant within the Wensleydale Creamery facility. It offers good plain home cooked food, some dishes reflecting the fact that it a cheese factory and in Yorkshire, and the quality is first class and also excellent value for money.

A very busy restaurant on Sunday. The selection of freshly prepared food was good. The carvery was fresh with a good selection of vegetables. The Quiche was very tasty and made from their own cheeses. It would have been interesting to have the three course meal that was cheese based but we felt that after the cheese tasting and picking up some cheese for a cheese board later that perhaps we should select something different.

We normally visit Cumbria once a year and one of those days we visit Hawes. We always choose Calverts in the Wensleydale Creamery as we have always had good service. This year was no different, quickly shown to our table with the menu. This year I tried something different I went for the ham egg and chips. We did not wait long and our food arrived and I must say we had two large slices of ham ( very tender and tasty)with nice golden chips and two eggs. The sweet was very good too. I would suggest maybe you try their lemon drink which is very tasty and refreshing. Good food good service and resonably priced you could not ask for anything better.

After a quick look through the menu at the door and a chat with a lovely member of the shop staff who had just had the beef lunch, we decided to see if a table was available. We were seated immediately and left to further investigate the extensive menu by a pleasant lady. Our drinks order was taken within a few minutes and when they arrived (literally within a couple of minutes) our food order was taken. As a family of 4 it was bound to be a mixed order which consisted of 2 beef carveries, a Yorkshire rarebit and a Yorkshire dales cheese burger. As a former chef it’s not always difficult to find something I’d either have done differently or not like. On this occasion I really couldn’t find fault with any of it! The beef was so tender It just melted in the mouth. The Yorkshire pudding was light and crispy. The veg - carrots, broccoli and green beans, red cabbage (to die for), cauliflower cheese, roast potatoes were all cooked to absolute perfection! Usually the veg is my biggest nit picking part but not today. The burger was very tasty according to my teenage son and the Yorkshire rarebit was perfect for my cheese addict daughter. Staff were all extremely lovely and nothing was too much. Just wish we were here next week to do it all again. All I can say now is thank you to the staff for restoring my faith in a carvery!

Ate here whilst visiting the creamery. Nicely located busy restaurant and reasonably priced.Great views too. Offers for 2 or 3 courses ( if you can manage 3!!!) Food is well presented and tasty. Portions are a good size, staff are really friendly. As you can imagine the menu is “cheese based” but there is plenty to choose from. Beer was reasonably priced too at £3.60 a pint. Worth a visit after purchasing your cheese from the cheese shop.

We visited Calverts Retaurant at Hawes for lunch during the week. The menu was comprehensive and offered something for everyone. Most of the dishes were made with cheese (wendsleydale and cheddar) although there were options without too. I had the Quiche which was beautiful, very light and flavoursome. It was served with salad, celariac coleslaw and chips. My husband had Yorkshire rarebit, also delicious and served with the salad and coleslaw. Our desserts were fantastic too, shortbread with raspberries and fruit pie with cheese! The cost was fair for the food, we paid about £30 for our meals, puddings and a drink each. Wish I lived nearer to visit more, loved it here!

Calvert's is a proper restaurant with table service in the Wensleydale Creamery. The hours are somewhat limited, as they close at 4pm, and it can be very busy during lunch time. However, for a late lunch or early supper, it is a wonderful choice. There are lots of items on the menu to choose from, but I decided to try their "Ultimate Yorkshire Cheese Experience", a three course meal. The starter was ale battered Wensleydale cheese, served crisp and hot with a fruity and delicious chutney. I chose the blue cheese sauce for the chicken breast, which was mild and with a light tang, a perfect complement for the chicken. On the day I visited they had run out of the cheesecake, so instead I substituted sticky toffee and pear pudding. A perfect finish to a delicious meal.

An excellent menu, most (but not all) meals feature a cheese sauce - adding a unique and wonderful flavour, (made from their own cheeses) somewhere in the meal, and what an excellent sauce it is - almost a meal in itself.

My wife and I visited with some friends and were very impressed with the value for money of the meals. I had the ploughman's that included 5 separate pieces of Wensleydale cheese all sorts of salad pieces and chutney's- almost too much to eat. The meals that the rest of our group had were similarly extensive. We'd definitely visit the restaurant again the next time we travel that way.

We visited here after reading some encouraging reviews and noting that “booking is essential for food”, we thought it would be a safe bet while we were in the area. Unfortunately, the 2 stars are for service along as the bar staff were very polite and helpful. They are also dog friendly which is a bonus. Other than that, the food was not impressive. We had the Sunday roast and the beef tasted of poor quality, and vegetables were not seasoned and lacked flavour. The cabbage served with the meal was pickled which wasn’t what we expected. We were still hungry afterwards but didn’t want to waste any more money on desert in case it was more of the same. The decor is very tired and the place does lack atmosphere unfortunately. We didn’t drink alcohol but they have a wide variety of ales to choose from behind the bar. We won’t be returning, sadly!

The bartender gratuitously insulted me, saying it must be hard for Americans to walk the Coast to Coast because we drive everywhere in our cars, to Taco Bell and Burger King. His tone was not joking, but rather mocking. But the food was decent and they have a dietary inclusive menu.

Came here for afternoon tea for my Mum’s birthday. The grounds and decor inside the coach house are lovely. The afternoon tea and range of sandwiches and puddings were amazing and you could tell they were all freshly made, unlike a lot of other afternoon teas I have had. There was a good selection of teas to choose from and these were refilled. The scones were lovely and still nice and warm, not hard or difficult to cut into. The waiting staff were pleasant and friendly, they went through each filling and part of the afternoon tea also. Although this was a little bit more expensive than other places for afternoon tea it is definitely worth it for the good quality food and presentation. Would definitely visit again!

Turned up ad hoc for a meal and were made very welcome. Lovely roast dinner and veg. Great atmosphere and sensible pub-grub menu: just the ticket!
