The Kings Head in Richmondshire

The pub was warm and welcoming with a small but varied menu. I chose the vegetable hot pot (which was so delicious that the chef kindly gave me their recipe). It was great to see that all the seasonal vegetable side dishes were fresh. The sausages on the menu were fat and juicy, the fish and chips were crisp and plentiful. An excellent meal and great service. I will definitely visit again

We arrived in Gunnerside last night for a two week stay and found out it was Bonfire Night in the village. After the judging of the guys at the pub lots of people made their way up the road for a bonfire, fireworks and mulled wine. All superbly organised by Fiona and friends. After that it was back to the pub for a wonderful meal, tasty beers and very friendly welcome from the locals and barstaff. Best pub for miles. Cheers!

Smashing little community owned boozer in Gunnerside in the most wonderful Swaledale. Popped in mid walk for a constitutional and enjoyed a couple of perfectly kept lagers. Highly recommended

Pub is lovely. Vegan hot pot and crumble absolutely beautiful. Guinness and rum also . You don't need a massive choice with quality

We stayed at Gunnerside for the weekend and booked a meal at The King's Head. We both had veg hotpot and apple/blackberry crumble with custard. The atmosphere was very welcoming and friendly. The people were lovely. Nice quiet pub, no music, lovely fire.

Holidaying in the area we pre-booked this Pub for a lunch stop during a walk. The best roast pork I've ever had. Everything was delicious, presented perfectly and generous portions. A lovely pub with helpful and friendly staff. Highly recommended.

Really good ambience - small rural pub. Good food that fills and tastes good. Great for visiting after a walk / hike. Selection of beers could be bigger, but it is a small pub. I recommend!

Excellent pub food, far better than the Black Bear or Punchbowl (local competitors we also used). Good service. Very helpful bar staff.

The surrounding area is lovley and the pub inside is very nice however the staff are grumpy, rude and very inconsiderate. We were standing at the bar waiting to be served and one of the staff kept pushing me out of the way without saying excuse me or saying sorry. They also claim it’s freshly hand made food and it isn’t. It was nice food however They were walking through the pub from the cupboard area with frozen food taking it into the kitchen!

Amazing food, generous portions, friendly staff and a great atmosphere

The food and service was excellent. You can sit out in the sun and enjoy your meal and drinks.

Great range of beers and largers, the ale was kept perfectly and food looked amazing. The landlady and landlord were very welcoming, both taking the time to come over and ask how we were doing and to check everything was okay. A perfect pub situated in a perfect location, at the end of a walk around the historic valley. We will definitely be returning, thank you for the great service

Had a meal here after walking from Muker. First impressions, the meals look expensive, but beware, portion sizes are large! The Smoked Mackerel Pate starter (the best she's ever tasted according to my wife) could have been a meal in itself. The chicken & leek pie special was chocker block with chicken and the veg done just right. Full marks for the food, not to mention the Black Sheep beer. Personally, I would have preferred smaller portions with lower prices, but that's so I could have had room for a pudding.

Absolutely smashing little pub , stayed in the village for a couple of days spent both evenings in the pub for food , which was exellent, beer was great , atmosphere was excellent , lovely host that made us feel so welcome , we will be back , recommend that if you are planning on going for food to book ahead , it’s popular for a reason.

Fantastic community owned pub in picturesque Gunnerside. Popped in at 5.30pm on a rainy Tuesday to be offered the last table they had for dinner. Chose the pie on the specials list, Chicken and Leek. Husband had Steak and Ale pie. Both tasted delicious served with chips, gravy and perfectly cooked vegetables. There was no room for dessert but we had some anyway! Highly recommend this dog friendly pub, maybe book a table though to make sure. Thank you to the great staff there. 😀

My friend and I had a pint of Black Sheep before our trip into Gunnerside Gill. The King's Head is a lovely pub. Perfect location, really picturesque, quaint inside and with a great owner. We didn't try the food but I'll be taking my girlfriend at some point for a proper meal because it looks worth it. I can imagine when the fire is lit on an autumn evening this pub would be one of the most welcoming places on earth. Beer wasn't over priced which is always a bonus. 5/5

Just had a lovely evening meal here. The village of gunnerside is super pretty and the Kings Head pub does not disappoint. It's cosy inside and while it looks like it has been updated its kept its lovely dales character. Lots of old dales and tour de france pics decorate the walls. The bar is well stocked with excellent local beer from Askrigg, gluten free and alcohol free bottles. We were a family of 4 and booked ahead - while there were a couple of tables free I wouldn't chance it. We ordered veg lasagne / child's fish and chips / chicken curry / chicken and leek pie special. All were top notch. Service was friendly, atmosphere good, even the toilets were clean and tasteful.

Really nice pub in a very nice little village. Had really good food, good quality cumberland sausage, mash and veg, and a hearty beef burger - both good flavour and portions! Decent beers on tap and really friendly staff. Dog friendly and has a nice little outdoor area for sunny days. Highly recommend!

Doing the C2C I popped in at lunch time and I had a vegetable lasagne which was absolutely delicious! The owners are very friendly and it seemed that the other guests appreciate this place as well as I could hear they were fully booked for dinner during the week. Please keep going as this place is just great.

Walked into this pub with my daughter on our coastal path walk after injuring my knee. I could not continue. After ordering a half pint and a snack, I asked the pub manager/bartender if I could get a taxi in town to take me to Keld. There were no taxis to be had but the gentleman offered to drive me. What a gem. He not only drove me but helped me hobble into my lodging. The beer was cold, the snacks were great, and the hospitality was top notch. Definitely a must visit.

Had Sunday lunch here, may bank holiday weekend. Roast (beef) excellent, proper steak pie too. And the sticky toffee pud n custard a treat. Good service, value and proper home cooked food. Keep it up folks😀

In a small village with old houses, this pub is located along the river. Cosy, friendly people, delicious home made food.

Great welcoming village pub with friendly staff.....well it was on our last visit, locals moaning that the sun will be coming out on the bank holiday weekend and moaning about the tourism coming to the little village of Gunnerside........I'll still visit this lovely little place but I won't be contributing financially to this pub anymore......I'll drive to Reeth instead....hillbilly mentality I'm afraid.....no chance of food either if you've not booked a month in advance and I think £8.40 for a pint and a half is a piss take, another reason I'll keep away.

Absolutely amazing food! Came with my partner and family, and stayed in Gunnerside in a lovely little cottage, This local Friendly pub which was a short walk away, it is one of the best tasting foods at a “pub” I’ve had while travelling. Lovely people and cheap also! would recommend!

We are regular visitors to Gunnerside and have just spent 2 weeks there. We were delighted to see what a success the new owners are making of The King's Head. Great food and beer, and a friendly welcome from them and the locals are just what you want after a day's walking ( mostly in the rain this year).

Good to see the pub doing so well & the locals back in make a great atmosphere. New landlord and lady are super friendly and welcoming. Plus they now serve a proper steak pie and it's the best ever!

Prices have risen - and quite rightly too, if rural hospitality workers and suppliers are to receive a fair deal - yet The King’s Head is still great value for money. On Good Friday, the bar was heaving and every table was full. Lovely atmosphere, and good to see business booming. Delicious steak and ale pie, and an excellent pub chicken curry, both delivered by cheery staff - thank you!

Excellent evening meal consisting of Cumberland sausage and vegetables, fish and chips and sticky toffee pudding. This is a remote, traditional English pub that is a ‘must visit’ to anyone visiting Swaledale.

We had a lovely three course meal, food was absolutely delicious and atmosphere was great. We had a wonderful evening and it was amazing value for money too. It was recommended at our holiday cottage and it is a gem of a find!

Really friendly and accommodating after we'd been for a walk in the rain and were wet through to the bone. Lovely food. I'd recommend the steak pie and chips. My friend had the beef Sunday lunch which was a bit minimal especially for the price.

My friend and I had been walking. We were drenched through . We called into the kind head for lunch . The owner was so helpful , she gave me some socks as mine were soaking wet and we dried our clothes on the radiator . The service was second to none , food was good and I shall definitely be back . A great Dales pub. Stone flagged floors and a roaring fire. Quirky and full of character. Dog friendly too. Prebooked a Sunday Lunch. Garlic mushrooms, deep fried brie and roast beef/ Yorkshire puds rounded off with home made sticky toffee pudding. Delicious and very reasonably priced. Lovely little village pub. We had dinner a few nights there and each time it was very tasty . Extremely friendly staff but unfortunately the lovely tenets are leaving. Such a shame as really friendly people. I'm sure they are going to be missed

You've just got to visit this place in delightful Askrigg.. Great atmosphere, hosts, food, beer and locals. Feels like you are in Darroby, (all Creatures Great and Small)

A quaint little countryside pub that we landed on as driving past. A great drinks selection, very friendly staff. We didn't eat here so we can't comment.

A lovely small pub in this small village. It has a great range of drinks and a varied menu, not a traditional village pub menu. The Steak and Ale Pie was not great, far too much Thyme resulting in lot's of stalks and thyme leaves, maybe I had the bottom of the pan?

Highly recommend the Kings Head. We had many great evening meals. Varied menu and competitively priced. Local ales on tap. Friendly staff, will visit again soon.

The King’s Head is cosy and friendly. They had brilliant local real ales on tap from the Yorkshire Dales Brewing Company and local Spirit of Swaledale gin. The menu had a good variety. It’s advisable to book a table.

This is a small friendly local pub food is quite nice with a very limited menu. Basically something for everyone but no frills, which suits me. Prices are a little on the high side, but the pub is very remote so they are like everywhere else,they have to cover their costs. Open Wednesday to Sunday closed Monday and Tuesday. Great for walking in the area and dogs welcome.

Been visiting gunnerside for 57 years now and seen many changes .the kings head is the heart of the village and offers great hospitality .with a good selection of food and drink all well presented and well priced .a real asset to the area .
