The Black Bull in Richmondshire

Stopped by this weekend, lovely pub, games, such as dominoes, available. Friendly for both kids and dogs. Staff really nice, and happy to accommodate asks for less requested items. The previous time we went there was 25 years ago! It’s much improved since then. I was wary of going in, but would go back any time. Could possibly do with a bit better marketing outside, to make it seem more appealing to families during the day time.

Superb , warm and friendly welcome with outstanding beers! In a country pub you look for a smile and an inclusion - this is exactly what the Black Bull does and makes you feel immediately at home - we stayed in the village for the Christmas week and had a tremendous time - thoroughly recommend it so drop in for a beer - it’s what Middleham is all about 👍🏻

Great little pub this, great selection of food of all different types and at very reasonable prices, the real ale is excellent

Now the best pub in the town for variety of ales. For those wishing to escape Black Sheep and Theakston Best (and I am not saying they are bad but just seem to be everywhere) this is your best opportunity in the town. 4 cask (2 staple and 2 changing) ales available also offers the greatest choice in the town too. Also on Real Ale Finder app which is nice to see.

We stayed here in October for 2 nights while attending a wedding at the saddle room. Perfect location for this only 5min drive away. Harriet and staff went above and beyond. We stayed in a lovely spacious room no2 both bedroom and bathroom were immaculate. Excellent shower etc. and what a bargain for the price it is a very friendly pub we witnessed their own football team coming in to a huge pan of spaghetti Bolognese after their match on sunday. They're definitely a community hub/pub. We had breakfast both mornings not your usual full breakfast or scrambled egg great range of menu and we thoroughly enjoyed it, you can tast the difference locally sourced fresh produce. I can safely say we would definitely stay here again maybe if we come to visit the forbidden corner again only 5min drive. Wish I could give 6 stars for hospitality alone.

Staff were lovely but other than that we were mostly disappointed. We waited an hour and 15 minutes for food which wasn't great. However, the staff did give us free drinks to compensate for the wait which was nice. They had no pie left which is what we wanted. This was really disappointing considering that's what it is famous for and the only reason we visited whilst being on holiday. We got burgers and a chicken and chorizo tray bake. The burgers were nice but the tray bake wasn't great at all, just a bowl of 3 different vegetables with chorizo and chicken with no seasoning, tasteless and not worth £14 at all. Wouldn't go back. Wish I had cooked at the accomodation instead.

Friendly atmosphere. We were served drinks quickly, even though the pub was busy. Good choice of food on the menu. The food was excellent, good portions and cooked perfectly. The waitress was friendly and helpful. Would definitely visit again.

Superb from start to finish. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Absolutely excellent home made pies. It says as homemade there may be a little wait however it was 10-15 minutes only for us. Brilliant meal after a good walk

Staff so welcoming and friendly

Had overnight stay here with my daughter and grandchildren. Perfect, homely, friendly pub. Room was spacious,(Room 3), really comfy beds (spotlessly clean), breakfast was lovely.

We stayed 2 nights B&B, room was clean and comfortable, breakfast was very good, lots to choose from and 'full English' was excellent. We booked evening meal the second night, and the chef 'George' recommended the home-made pies, which did not disappoint. Would not hesitate to stay again when visiting N. Yorkshire.

We stayed for one night in a twin room, clean and homely with very comfortable beds. A lovely welcome and the evening meal was 10/10 - undoubtedly the best fish and chips we’ve had bar none! The pub itself reminded us of the past (which is a good thing), bare floorboards, no music but plenty of people chatting and socialising. A friendly and comforting vibe about the place. A special mention to the young man who took care of us at breakfast the next morning, took care of everything and is an asset to you! We would highly recommend this place to anyone who wants a personal and proper home vibe without the fuss you get in some places.

Middleman is a fantastic village to stay especially if you like horses and racing , however the pubs need to step up with food and service. The Black Bull that we had a meal,and drinks during the evening was ok not much choice on the dinner menu, it consisted most of meat pie chips peas so don't expect much else,as we stayed in this village for a week we found several good pubs that served FAB meals. One of the best we found is called the Forester Arms ,Carlton Leyburn you will not be disappointed.

The pies here are amazing, not to be missed! And the delicious apple crumble, so good. All homemade and served with love and pride

Was recommended this pub by a friend as somewhere to grab a home made pie (one of my weaknesses), and it surely did not disappoint! The village which it sits in is beautifully picturesque, would love to see it in the winter time covered in snow. Standing proudly on the corner of the main square the building is lovely and welcoming. On entering, the staff were very welcoming and accommodating, nice to see a true local public house with its own pooch running up to greet you. The food cannot be faulted. Lamb and Mint pie for myself with triple cooked chips and honey glazed carrots, perfectly cooked and a true homemade taste, not a processed morsal in sight! Probably one of the nicest I have ever tasted and I love a pie so have had a few over the years. Will 100% be returning back here

This pub is in a great location, with a nice and cosy atmosphere! Some great food menu options, I had the Halloumi burger and chips for dinner and it was delicious. Service was great. Definitely recommend and would 100% visit again!

Great traditional bar with friendly staff and good beer, dog friendly and good food

Called in for a drink and we were made very welcome, pub quiz was on the go, we were invited to join a team by the locals. It was a fun evening the quiz master, got more entertaining as the night and more drink was consumed. Lovely friendly pub.

We stayed here on a Friday night and ate in the restaurant for Dinner and breakfast. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and the room was clean and comfortable. The dinner was very obviously homemade and fresh, we both had pie and chips and loved it. The chicken goujon starters were out of this world! Well priced with fab beers too. Breakfast was also very nice. Overall we had a brilliant stay and would love to return!

Has a meal with 6 of us, food was average at best I wouldn't recommend eating here, The pies were all overcooked chips were under cooked, the kids sausages and burger was greasy and black.

Stayed in Middleham for a family Easter break and had pre-booked a table at the Black Bull for our second night. The pub looked nice and the staff were friendly. The menu mainly consisted of pizza or pies (all home-made it said and come with 'tripple cooked' chips) Unfortunately my chips weren't even once cooked! Big fat pieces of potato with skin on and clearly not cooked (white) I cut my steak pie down the middle and searched for a piece of steak... there wasn't one, just bits in gravy! My wife was lucky, she had one piece in hers. Not sure if the chef was off sick but this is simply not good enough. OK for a drink but don't waste your hard earned money by eating here.

Excellent meat pie dinners were enjoyed by the three of us....service was excellent and the atmosphere was fun. Other patrons were easy to meet. Can't fault anything.

Nice pub and rooms to stay in. Very friendly staff and lots of choice of drinks. There isn't a dedicated car park, so you have to keep your eyes peeled in the village centre for a space. Would go back again. Ideal spot to get into the Yorkshire Dale's quickly

The Ale was plentiful and delicious, however the music was awful it's supposed a medieval style tavern and they had Swagger Jagger on. This was absolutely unforgivable. I was hungry so I ordered a "Homemade" Steak and Ale Pie with the Triple cooked chips. It was anything but homemade as it came with some strange foil on it. It was disappointing. Then we came across the bar staff who looked like they didn't want to be there, which didn't add to the atmosphere. Overall it has potential but they need to go back to their medieval roots.

Great traditional pub, friendly staff. We had a lovely couple of pints and some fantastic home cooked food. Both of us opted for the Steak and Ale pie which came with triple cooked chips, mushy peas and red wine gravy. Absolutely delicious

The curried veg pie is one of the best I’ve ever had. I can’t stop thinking about it.

I have just come back from a lovely mid week two night stay at the Black Bull in Middleham. I stayed in room 1 which was very spacious with a large double bed and superb shower. The owners Sam and Harriet plus the rest of the team are all great hosts and you really feel like you are part of the local community staying at the pub. Breakfast is also superb and set me up well for my cycling adventures. MIddleham and the surrounding area really is a beautiful part of the country with plenty to explore right on your doorstep. I will certainly be back again soon.

Really disappointing lunch menu, just jacket spuds or Mac n cheese

Fish pie good but red cabbage and garlic bread do not compliment pie. Very small portion.

An absolutely lovely place to stay, the room was well decorated and set out, spacious, the bed was very comfortable, nice thick duvet even though the room was nice and warm. The bar has a good selection of lager, cider and Ales, there is also a good selection of spirits, especially the Forged Gin !! We also ate here and the food was fantastic! Good selection of juices and cereals and also the choice of a cooked breakfast, we opted for the full English of course which was amazing. Zero complaints about anything during our stay, the bar staff are all lovely too, and the landlord Sam was always on hand to help if needed. We can’t wait to stay here again in December , Middleham is a lovely little village.

If you are looking for a place to stay to explore the Middleham / Leyburn area of the Yorkshire Dales, this gem of a pub is a real find. The team are friendly and welcoming and it's situated on the market place. Our room (the family room) is very comfortable and clean, and the shower was excellent. We had the full English breakfast (really set us up for the day) and dinner was fantastic (best jambalaya I have had in a long time).

Great stay at The Black Bull for a wedding locally. The pub was incredibly friendly and staff flexible. The room was extremely comfortable and beautifully decorated with an enormous bed and very clean bathroom with powerful shower. Breakfast was big and hit the spot. The owner was even so kind to drop us off at the venue to collect our car as we struggled with taxis. Nothing too much for these guys would highly recommend!!

Great little pub with great food. Breakfast was plentiful and set us up for the day. Bed was super comfortable and huge! Staff are very friendly and nothing was to much trouble. We only stayed the one night as we were visiting the forbidden corner a couple of miles away. Only negative points (sorry as I forgot to mention it in the morning), we couldn't get the tv to work, no biggy as it was just 1 night and the bathroom wall needs some tlc but the rooms were spotless. Would definatly recommend anyone to stay and a point i have forgotten to mention is the WiFi is very good if you need to catch up on emails. Thanks to the black bull!

What a great find. Booked one night stay for ourselves and little grandson and could not have chosen better. Lovely clean room and bathroom, really great food and excellent breakfast. The staff were absolutely fantastic,very friendly and helpful. Would definitely book again. We stay all over the place round the country and rate our night here as very good.

Stopped in for Sunday lunch after visiting local attractions. Absolutely beautiful, it was 30mins until kitchen close yet everything was amazing.

Lovely for the experience of a real old fashioned dales pub, food was good. The "but" is whilst I don't object to dogs in pubs they should be kept out of the dining area. Very friendly crowd and met a lovely Indian guy from Uganda and his wife, the guy was great fun and made us laugh.

Very nice place to have an evening drink outside. We were there mid July 2021 and its the last place in the square to receive the evening sunshine. A variety of meals and selection of ales. Very reasonable prices too. We found the staff very pleasant and helpful. Sadly only limited seating outdoors.

Excellent service food and drink. My husband had to be rushed off to hospital soon after we arrived, unfortunately. Sam and Harriet looked after me as if I was their Granny. The room was very comfortable and we'll appointed. Still managed to see the racehorses passingy bedroom window.

Just renovated en-suite big room with X King size bed, even hair conditioner provided. Very good home made pies and chunky chips (including vegan). Also very good organic wine reasonably priced. Middleham village is very nice too with more places to eat and drink

New Landlord/Lady, great couple very welcoming, good beer and food.

We called in for something to eat and a few beers. The Steak and dumpling pie was delicious and my wife said it was the best burger she'd ever had. The beer was bang on and the staff were very friendly.Everything was clean and the landlady was quick with the sanitiser when someone left a table.As the title says it's under new management so well worth a visit.

We enjoyed a few drinks on the outdoor benches in the sunshine and then came back to sample the lovely pies and ice cream for an evening meal. The hosts were always so friendly and pleased to see us. Great coffee too and well worth a visit.

We called in for a drink while we were staying in Middleham for a few days.We found the main bar area to be be scruffy with sticky tables and some old tools left on one of them and a very disinterested bar maid on duty.As for the prices £4.20 for a pint of mediocre lager no taa we left after 1 drink never to return much better places locally.

Good beer, nice area to sit outside on summers day

Having been disappointed at another pub in Middleham market square found this pub on the internet. Went to visit to be told new owners had taken over and not doing food. Pointed out had found on internet and told they knew they had to take the site down.

The Black Bull is right in the market place of this historic town. A real drinkers pub with large TV screens, pool & darts. The whole place, including the toilets, was very clean and the welcome behind the bar was genuine.

Brilliant food and great staff will be returning

Pub crawl in the village we liked it in here however the lack of seating proved a problem after a 10k walk we wanted to sit down so unfortunately we had one drink and didnt return the whole weekend.

We were staying in Middleham House for our annual weekend away with friends and visited the Black Bull. They were easily able to cater for a large group and took our banter and very larger order in their stride. Good selection of Gin here too. worth a visit.
