After reading great reviews I called in here on Monday March 27 2023 looking for lunch. Very pleasant and polite member of staff informed me that the restaurant is no longer open to serve daytime meals since they shut at the the end of last season

The welcome was friendly and the food was good and made a change from the pub fare in the rest of the town. I tried for several days to get a reservation but they never answered the phone, but fortunately there was a table available.

I booked this hotel as a treat for my husband's 60th based mainly on the reviews for the restaurant. I booked a table a few months ago and got a confirmation email, so assumed everything was in order. When we arrived we discovered the restaurant was in fact closed and being a busy Saturday night with an event going on in the town we were unable to find anywhere else to eat. A simple email to inform us of this change would have allowed us to book a table elsewhere in Hawes. I find it incredible and slightly cruel that this curtecy was not afforded us. Our room was pleasant and comfortable with nice views, but could maybe do with a bit of TLC. I enjoyed the fresh fruit and yoghurt selection at breakfast as I don't like a cooked meal. The toast was a bit burnt and dried out. My husband thought the cooked breakfast was ok but a bit dried out too. The girl who served us was lovely. The location of the hotel is excellent but parking during the day was a nightmare. It was a shame the lack of communication spoilt our stay.

Up market fish restaurant. Crab cocktail starter good but could have had more oomph and a little difficult to eat in a V shaped cocktail glass. My wife had cod and lemon butter sauce which was excellent, as was my swordfish steak on crushed potatoes. The meal was spoilt by desert. No menu offered lemon pie, chocolate fondant or cheese. We both went for the fondant. It arrived, hot, a minute later - had to have been out of a microwave. It was very disappointing. Very dry and no liquid centre. There was no cream or ice cream with it. When got the bill we discovered we had been charged £21 for the two - they were not worth half that. A real shame

What a lovely place to stay. The building is an old Quaker’s meeting hall so is as you would expect from a very old building. The location is fab, handy for the car park and the high street. Now for the bar, modern stylish and classy at the same time. Great wine choices. It’s really nice to go walking across the moors then go to the room, shower and dress up because the bar is so nice you want to glam up a bit. The restaurant - wow! Well I’ve been to some well known fish restaurants in the north that everybody goes on about well this beats them all. Gosh it was a nice break and whilst the walks were brilliant I remember that meal, the wine, the elegance and the cheese board!!!! -well done to the team for working so hard, for taking the risk to invest when all the odds with C19 were against you. You can be very proud of what you have created in Hawes I just need to book again

The fabulous staff at 1668 managed to fit us in for the most fabulous dinner yesterday evening. We sat outside and thoroughly enjoyed the most stunning meal. Starting with mussels and scallops, mains of local lamb and chocolate brownie and cheeseboard dessert to follow, all of the best quality, served in lovely surroundings by wonderful staff. Absolutely superb! Couldn't fault it in any way. We will return.

Stopped in Hawes for a look round and found 1668 on the main road. Good choice of light lunches - we chose different things from the menu, Thai fish cakes, prawn sandwich, seafood linguine and Caesar salad; all four were thoroughly enjoyed. We were a bit confused as to whether the tables on the path were part of the restaurant but luckily they were, so plenty of seating, as the town was heaving.

I stay in a lot of hotels through the course of my work and this place really hits the spot. I’ve been working in the area on and off for the last year or so and have always been welcomed warmly at Cocketts. Nothing is too much trouble for Peter and Rachel the owners, from random breakfast requests to making our packed lunches for a long days working in the Dales. Nothing is too much trouble for them. Fantastic staff, clean rooms and excellent food, wine and service. Always sad to say goodbye but thankfully I know I’ll be back soon.

We had an evening meal as well as breakfast in the restaurant and the food/breakfast choice was very good, the young waiter (masked) was attentive and polite. 4-5 stars for the restaurant. But our review is regarding our overnight stay. We arrived to a very cold room, that the (female) owner noted and suggested the radiators would be on (soon). They did indeed eventually come on - noticing the slight warmth nearly an hour later. But it was at least a couple more hours before we felt any real warmth in the room. The room itself was just OK, cosy but comfy enough (twin) beds but poor quality furniture, a bedside lamp not working (albeit remedied after raising with the owner), a cobweb above the bed, tea/coffee facilities with kettle connected to an extension lead all on the very high window ledge making it a challenge - particularly as I'm not tall - to make the drinks, empty shower gels etc., about a 1/4 of a toilet roll (with no spare) - we did run out! On departure (as on arrival) there was no chit chat - no "was everything OK for your stay?" or "have a safe journey". If this was a £60 per night room (including breakfast), all but the fact that it was so cold for our arrival, would be a lot more acceptable but we were expecting a bit more from the £120 price tag so very disappointed.

We have visited Cockett’s Hotel many times over the years and have always loved the excellent food in the restaurant. We were back in Hawes on 13th September 2020 and booked a table for dinner. We were aware that the hotel was under new management and that changes had been made so were keeping our fingers crossed that the food was as good as it had always been over the years. We were not disappointed! There have been a number of physical changes to the bar and restaurant making it more modern and chic compared to the previous more homely environment. We liked what changes had been made. The menu is more fish focussed but there are still a number of dishes available for those who don’t like fish. The food we ordered was absolutely first class and as good as we’ve eaten anywhere. The tempura king prawns were huge and the best we’ve tasted. I ordered a tuna steak which was cooked to perfection . My partner had homemade pate and a rack of lamb for a main dish. Both were superb! We couldn’t manage a dessert however, those we saw being served to other guests looked incredible. I will certainly ensure we leave room for one on our next visit!I think you would struggle to get a better meal anywhere in Wensleydale. We have previously eaten at the Wensleydale Heifer which, although excellent, I believe restaurant 1668 beats it.Can’t wait till our next visit!

The whole venue stood out compared to anything else in Hawes and the surrounding areas with a modern pretty patio outside the front, a cute little bar, and the restaurant and menu that was offered. The attention to detail couldn’t be faulted, and really made it a step above everything else in the area. First time under the new management really looked forward to another fish restaurant apart from the Heifer. I’ll not go on, suffice to say that both of the lobster Thermidor were well overcooked. Mentioned to the waitress, no mention or apology or anything from that side. Got bill , no mention and full price for everything, left the restaurant area went over to the owner with the bill and told her Quietly what we had said and that we wouldn’t be paying for those 2 lobsters. Obviously this was news to her. She disappeared and came back a couple of minutes later with the retort “well the person before you said it was lovely” The couple were next to our table and I happened to hear him mention it was his first time for lobster, so to him it may have been ok, but I’ve had LT in many restaurants from The nearby Wensleydale Heifer to the Crab and Lobster, to the 4 seasons in ncle, it’s one of my favourite meals and I know when it’s good or not and this was overcooked and the sauce lacking in flavour. The starters Thai fish cakes and the Oysters were fine. Still no apology, not the way to treat customers, intimating that they don’t know what they are talking about. A shame but hopefully the owner can be a bit more friendly and take criticism on the chin. If not maybe they’ll be more new owners next time. Even her response to the last reviewer Was very sarcastic and arrogant. Remember, we make you fail or succeed, you can’t have attitudes like that in your industry. Say sorry first and last, even if you don’t mean it, try to keep customers. My wife said when we went next door for drinks that the risotto was undercooked and too “ al dente”. All in our opinions of course, but we eat out in all manner of restaurants very regularly.

I can't write a proper review of the place really. I was staying a couple of miles from the place and went to Hawes to eat. We turned up and looked at the menu which was written on a large black board which did look amazing. It said that food was served 12-3pm. We took a seat and were pretty much ignored for five minutes. The waitress eventually came over with a pad and asked if we were ready to make out drink orders which we gave her. we then cought the eye of another waitress ad asked if we could see the menu and she told us that the kitchen closed at 2pm (it was 2.45 or so at that time). We told her that it said 3pm on the board and she told is that it should say 2pm and promptly took away the board. there was some faffing about during which time our drinks came and we were told that the kitchen was certainly closed as they'd had a big party in and it really should have closed at 2pm. By the time we'd finished out drinks it was too late to get lunch anywhere else. We gave them the benefit of the doubt and later made a reservation for a couple of days later to ensure that we wouldn't be let down. About an hour and a half before the reservation we got a call from the manager who gave us the most convoluted reasons for them not serving food that day - saying that there was it might rain - (it was about the hottest day of the year and there was no way it was ever going to rain). He also said that they weren't serving food inside either.

During a couple of days in beautiful Hawes, we chanced by Cockett's and thought the menu looked promising - we were not disappointed! We were treated to a warm welcome, by Bob, and shown into the lovely cosy lounge, where we enjoyed a pre-dinner drink. The restaurant too was simply but elegantly decorated. We both enjoyed the food, service and ambiance so much that we just had to book a table for the following night and hope to return again & again. Bob and Jack (Jaqueline) are adorable. For starters, we highly recommend the 'Marinated beetroot with grilled goats cheese & balsamic glaze', or, the 'Baked mushrooms stuffed with blue Wensleydale cheese & walnuts with honey vinaigrette'. For the main course, 'Fillets of sea bass (the best I've ever tasted)on a bed of spicy cous cous with lemon, mint & pine nuts', or, the 'Braised lamb shank with root vegetables served on a cheddar mash' - all as good as it sounds (and very reasonably priced)!

However, the hotel was being managed by a very nice couple who for 29 years had run Whites of Wensleydale in Hawes - gents and ladies outfitters - and who we had got to know over the years, until they retired nearly 2 years ago. They welcomed us with hugs and kisses, and we had a really nice dinner, served up by a very nice Latvian waitress. For a relatively small hotel it as a really good menu. I also enjoyed the generous serving of a variety of vegetables that were well prepared. My only criticism is that the serving size was so large that I had no room for dessert. I think TripAdvisor is a very useful tool for finding and filtering places you want to visit, stay and eat at. I think that it’s only fair to try and be positive where possible because people’s businesses and livelihoods are at stake. I try to follow the maxim ‘If you’ve nothing nice to say, say nothing at all’. If I was so enraged about a place I’d visited I would take it up directly with the manager or owner and I wouldn’t trade insults on TripAdvisor.

There were 8 of us and we were all very impressed with our meals; those who ordered the lamb declared it the most delicious lamb they've ever tasted. The service was quick, but we didn't feel rushed. It was a nice leisurely experience with delicious food in a relaxing environment. The breakfast was also superb.

Called in to see if they had a table in the afternoon, to make a change from the pubs and self catering, they had one table left. Greeted by the owner and shown into the lounge, pre dinner drinks and order taken. A la carte and a specials menu, both with lots of choices. Something I hadn't had for ages, smoked salmon, prawn and avocado salad, and husband had goats cheese with black pudding on apple. Delicious. Mains -Steak pie, lots of filling and stroganoff style venison, all washed down with a bottle of Shiraz Barossa. Total bill 57.30. Glad we went. Don't be put off with it being a hotel. Prices cheaper than pubs. Wonderful

My wife and I were staying for a long weekend at Hardraw for our fiftieth wedding anniversary, we had our honeymoon there, and decided to go into Hawes for an evening meal. We checked out all the "pubs" etc. but the only one that we fancied was fully booked for meals that night. As we were leaving the village to return to the car park we saw "Cockets" which is set back from the road, the menu looked inviting and so we decided to give it a try. Best thing we did all weekend. On entering we were invited into the lounge to decide on our meal, drinks were offered while we waited but as I was driving it was declined until dinner. The meal was exceptional, the ambience of the rooms first class, the service perfect. Price a little more than in the local Inns but well worth it, you got what you had paid for. Thoroughly recommend, would certainly make it top of my list if in the area again.

We have stayed a couple of times and can't say enough nice things about this place. Hawes is one of our favourite places to stay in country and shows off Yorkshire in all its glory. The rooms are always immaculate and Bob and Lesley are the perfect hosts and such a great couple. They (and all the team) made it the perfect setting for my mum and dad's golden wedding anniversary. The food was amazing and we will definitely be back for the belly pork again. Thanks for looking after us all so well

We had a table for 4 booked for a specific time but owing to circumstances well out of our control we needed to make a very late change. After explaining the predicament the owner advised they would hold the table and for us to "get there when you can". As this is not a high volume throughput establishment their approach, given that we were messing up table timings, was very good. On eventual arrival we were seated in a comfortable lounge and drinks brought through. All 4 meals were excellent and up to expectations (we had had a firm recommendation to book at Cockett's so expectations had been raised). Although not cheap it was very good value for money.

We stayed in Hawes for the week as we have family in the Highlands and we meet up for a weeks holiday together & It's about half way for each of us. We ate at Cocketts hotel and restaurant yesterday evening 14th July. We booked a table for the 6 of us.The place is beautifully quirky. From when we first walked in, we were warmly greeted and showed into the lounge for a drink. We ordered our food and were showed to our table where our starters were brought to us. The food was absolutely first class and the service was the same ! Our waitress was so lovely. The gentleman that also looked after us with our drinks etc. was spot on and had a fantastic dry sense of humour. If we had found this place earlier on our holiday, we would have eaten there every night it was that good !! I cannot express how good the food and service was !! You have to eat at this place !!

We enjoyed our meals of succulent lamb shank , and tasty venison stroganoff so much the first evening that we booked a table for our next evening too! This place really is fantastic. Went for a special meal on a Friday night, superb quality restaurant food from a menu with plenty of choice, good quality cooking and good portion sizes for the price! Service is always good. I think they might only turn the tables over once or twice as its never crowded but I would always recommend booking as have seen people turned away in the past despite it not being packed.

We dropped in on spec for a night, but unfortunately chose Tuesday night when Cockett's dining room is closed for the chef's night off :-( No worries - we recall from about 19 years previously, the dining and wines are excellent! We were persuaded the rear valley-facing rooms were worth a premium and yes!

We went to Cockets Hotel last week. At first we were a little disappointed by the outside appearance, it looked a little small and quite old, but it was built in 1668. This feeling soon disappeared when we entered the hotel. We were met by the owner with a very warm welcome,(not patronising). We were taken to our room and were surprised at the amount and selection of toiletry's available. It may seem a little petty but we have stayed at many 4 star hotels who do not provide, facecloths let alone dressing gowns. The room was very clean bright and airy with good views of the surrounding hills. The room was Swaledale. The meal at night was very good, the only complaint was that there was too much of it! It was a great pity that good food had to be wasted. The choice included, venison, salmon, lamb shank and liver and bacon. any choice would not disappoint. There were four of us in the party everyone of us enjoyed the food, but not one of us ate it all.The wine and drinks were very reasonably priced and so was the food. After saying that the hotel was small, when we went inside it was very surprising, two very large seating areas with comfortable setee's and comfortable fireside chairs. The atmosphere is very warm and relaxing, walkers, bikers and even more elderly all feel at home and comfortable. The breakfast was equally as good and the service was good and attentive. Breakfast was cooked for you after you had ordered it. It came hot and fresh! And not one "Have a nice Day" in earshot!!

Visited this restaurant twice during our visit to Hawes. Warm, friendly welcome. Great service but to top it all the food was amazing. Would highly recommend the lamb shank but the fillet steak with blue wensleydale and port sauce was one I'd the bestSo glad we found this place.

I sat with 5 friends for dinner on Friday night and thought it was quiet but it would get busier. It didn't but the quality of food and service means it should be full every night. We were graciously welcomed into the lounge provided with menus and drinks and given a few minutes to relax into the evening. A perfect start. After going through for dinner we were sat in a simple dinning room. The menu had a great selection of food and we all had something different and each meal was cooked beautifully. The only thing it lacked was atmosphere. Well done to the staff both front of house and in the kitchen. Of three evening meals I had in Hawes over the weekend, Cocketts's served my favourite food.

I've been coming to Hawes for 40 plus years and yet last week was the first time I had been to Cockett's to eat, and that has been a mistake on my part. Apart from having to wait a while when I called in to reserve a table I cannot praise this establishment enough. The food - was excellent, my starter of goats cheese and black pudding on pears with a cider and mustard sauce now has me experimenting in my kitchen to recapture the delight of that dish! My main and my wife's was also excellent; how many places when asked to prepare a medium rare steak end up serving a medium to well done steak? Well not Cockett's, it was cooked as we wanted it and tasted superb. But I couldn't understand why on a Saturday night when the four pubs in Hawes were heaving, that this place was so quiet; not that I objected to this. A really nice dining area, great attention from all the staff and this great food at prices little different from the pubs along the main drag... Lots of people are missing out and so is the proprietor. I can only think that as it is set back from the road, unlike the pubs, and the façade looks a little 'old fashioned' that it is easily overlooked; certainly that has been the case for me - but no longer!

A great little restaurant, we were welcomed and taken to the lounge where we were given menus and offered drinks.Once ready we were taken to our table and able to order from a good menu. The food was superb and plentyful. The staff were chatty and we had a very nice time. The amazing thing was how quiet the restaurant was, we were 6 of just 8 people in on a Friday Night. It was a hidden gem and would definately recommend especially as most of the Pub Restaurants are very busy.

We were in Hawes for the weekend and visited this hotel for dinner on the Saturday night. We are a group of 7 friends. Everything was fabulous. Good home cooked food (huge platefuls!) cooked with flair and imagination. The vegetable sides were also delicious. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the area. We had a great night!

We arrived a party of 3 for an evening meal having visited several years before. A warm welcome and a couple of drinks whilst we made our choices and we were escorted to our table. The starters were delicious and well portioned, mains too were well received and great value for money, puddings were limited but very tasty. The only problem was that it was all very rushed, we were in and out within 1hr 15 mins which is a little quick for our liking.

This restaurant was recommended to us by our hosts from Loxley House where we stayed and it didn't disappoint. When we arrived we were seated in the lounge by a lovely open fire and Bob brought us our drinks while we chose our food. We then were taken to our table and our starters followed shortly. I had the garlic mushrooms and my fiancé had the duck spring rolls in addition to this we were brought fresh brown bread and butter, delicious. Both starters were excellent. We were then brought our main courses I chose asparagus and tagliatelle and Barry chose the lamb shank. Both were excellent, the lamb shank was cooked to perfection and was on a bed of cheddar mash, additionally, we were brought a tray of vegetables the little roast potatoes in garlic and rosemary tasted so good! The food was plentiful and very good quality and the staff were very friendly and helpful we will be booking to eat here on our next visit to Wensleydale. Angela and Barry xxxx

My husband and I ate here one of the nights we recently stayed in Hawes and I can honestly say I had one of the best restaurant meals I have eaten in recent times. The staff were very pleasant and the service was excellent. Sadly, the restaurant was almost empty for a Saturday night and we were very surprised. People are missing out on the wonderful food this place has to offer, which is infinitely better than the food offered by the establishment which is rated as Number 1 in Hawes, in my opinion. We look forward to our next visit.

My husband and I spent the night here after having eaten in the restaurant back in April. The hotel is only a five minute walk away from the Hawes Creamery (well worth a visit if you are a cheese lover). We booked a superior king room at a rate of £96 for the night including breakfast. The room we had was "Wensleydale" which was one of the recently finished rooms. This was very well decorated with a touch of luxury. The king sized bed was very comfortable and the ensuite was clean and modern. There were luxury toiletries and Yorkshire tea included with the tea tray (a big bonus)! The views were stunning even for a rainy day. The room was fantastic value for money at £96 and the breakfast was as delicious as the evening meal we enjoyed the night before. Bob and Lesley were terrific hosts, making us feel welcome from start to finish. My husband is vegetarian and there were ample menu choices for him for the evening meal and breakfast. The lady that served the food was very friendly and efficient and also made us feel welcome. We will hopefully be visiting Hawes again next year and we will definitely be returning to Cocketts. Thanks again for a wonderful stay.

We ate twice here during our recent stay in Hawes. We received a warm welcome and the food was excellent on both occasions. We were visiting out of season and seemed to be the only customers on the second occasion, but the service and choice of food was again superb. The food arrived promptly, piping hot (where appropriate) and the service was friendly. Definitely recommended.

We lobbed into Hawes in the middle of the Annual Ewe Sale and accommodation and dinner bookings were at a premium. We had found our bed in another B&B but were recommended to try Cockett's for dinner so we wandered down mid-afternoon and booked for 7pm that night. We were ushered into the drinks lounge and promptly handed a Drinks Menu and the Dinner Menu to select our pre-dinner tipple and our food preferences. This was reminiscent of Fawlty Towers but in no way as chaotic. It was lovely to have a relaxing drink in an arm chair and a chat with some of the other couples awaiting their table bookings as well. Our drinks arrived and our dinner order was taken and we were left to chat for a short while. Before long, we were ushered into the dining room and our meal was promptly delivered. Our entrees of Duck Spring Rolls and Tempura King Prawns were hot, fresh and tasty but the piece d'resistance was the Rack of Lamb that we both enjoyed for our Main Meal. It was superbly cooked, still pink, and the accompanying vegetables, potatoes and hand-cut chips were yum!Don't be put off by the somewhat down-at-heel look of the outside of this pub - it is a cracker. I would go back any day.

This is a bit of a quirky place where the gentleman in charge (may have been the owner) gave the place a bit of a Fawlty Towers feel - but in a nice way! There certainly was nothing faulty about the restaurant and all the food was imaginative and delicious. I would definitely return.

The bartender gratuitously insulted me, saying it must be hard for Americans to walk the Coast to Coast because we drive everywhere in our cars, to Taco Bell and Burger King. His tone was not joking, but rather mocking. But the food was decent and they have a dietary inclusive menu.

Came here for afternoon tea for my Mum’s birthday. The grounds and decor inside the coach house are lovely. The afternoon tea and range of sandwiches and puddings were amazing and you could tell they were all freshly made, unlike a lot of other afternoon teas I have had. There was a good selection of teas to choose from and these were refilled. The scones were lovely and still nice and warm, not hard or difficult to cut into. The waiting staff were pleasant and friendly, they went through each filling and part of the afternoon tea also. Although this was a little bit more expensive than other places for afternoon tea it is definitely worth it for the good quality food and presentation. Would definitely visit again!

We visited here after reading some encouraging reviews and noting that “booking is essential for food”, we thought it would be a safe bet while we were in the area. Unfortunately, the 2 stars are for service along as the bar staff were very polite and helpful. They are also dog friendly which is a bonus. Other than that, the food was not impressive. We had the Sunday roast and the beef tasted of poor quality, and vegetables were not seasoned and lacked flavour. The cabbage served with the meal was pickled which wasn’t what we expected. We were still hungry afterwards but didn’t want to waste any more money on desert in case it was more of the same. The decor is very tired and the place does lack atmosphere unfortunately. We didn’t drink alcohol but they have a wide variety of ales to choose from behind the bar. We won’t be returning, sadly!
