Decided to try the Steak Night deal and enjoyed very much. Staff very friendly and welcoming. Steak cooked well and served with chips mushroom onion and tomato and pepper sauce. Choice of wine and just £30 per couple. Excellent quality and value for money too. The venue is dog friendly and we accept that, however we did take exception to one dog being sat on a seat and being fed food from owners plates 🙄. That should be discouraged. Otherwise a great ambience. The car park is however quite small and was difficult to navigate on our visit tonight. Maybe in winter months a few benches could be removed to assist spaces? Would recommend and will try other menu choices in the future.

Unfortunately we were very disappointed with both the service and quality of food. We sat awaiting menus for quite a while before we could get anyone’s attention, food arrived and looked underwhelming- especially the steak with no garnish on the plate. The Korean chicken burger was burnt and the onion rings didn’t arrive so we can’t comment on the quality of those. We wanted some vinegar for the chips but couldn’t get anyone’s attention as it seems the staff were stuck to the bar area despite it being quiet. This is the first time we’ve come here with family who travelled to see us and we won’t be returning. We hope the team can learn from our poor experience and receive further training. The assistant manager discounted the bill for us and was receptive and helpful so we’d like to acknowledge that.

We ordered the Sea Bass as we saw on the online Menu & what was advertised when we read the Menu... The nice waitress took the order. About 5 mins later a Gentleman came over & said the Seabass Menu had changed & was not as advertised on Men or online Menu... but we went with it.. It arrived in Pasta Bowls like a Salad... No Sauce & no prawns... The food was nice but for nearly 21.00 each it was disappointing... it felt more like a Starter than a main meal... and didn't look exciting... The Staff were lovely and service good. BUT felt 50.00 between us (couple of drinks) was not worth the money.

I got one potato and three very thin carrots plus a very overdone piece of lamb, a bit of gravy and a spoonful of mint sauce My guests meals were very poor also It is a bit tired inside and needs a facelift Let’s hope things improve

Not many customers in, probably with it being a Monday. Wine reasonably priced, nearly finished the bottle before the long wait for the meal to arrive! The steak was well cooked and tasty but small, cut in slices with just chips and a sauce. The sea bass was a joke, just 3 small pieces accompanied with half inch strips of pasta. For just under £21, we would have expected a full fish. Will not be returning or recommending!

Lovely spot in Holcombe, parking is limited, dog friendly, plenty of outside space for when weather is good. Veggie and vegan options not great. Arrived and seated straight away, drinks ordered placed. 10 mins later, waitress came to take food order so I mentioned we’d not yet had our drinks. Food order placed and she went to check…returned immediately so clearly our drinks had been sat on the bar awaiting collection (husband ordered pint of lime & soda but only got half). 20 mins later and the table in front were on their main course but we’d not yet had our starter. Another 5 mins and our mains came out. I said we’d not had our starter “was it chicken wings? They’re scheduled to come at the same time”. Why would I order chicken wings as a side to lamb chops and steak pie?? Then she actually brought the wings which I obviously returned. Mains were pretty good. Husband’s steak pie definitely better than my chop choice (incidentally, menu said grilled asparagus but I got soggy carrots - I understand asparagus is seasonal but it should probably have been mentioned when I ordered that it wasn’t available, or at least when my main was served). Plates taken and offered dessert. No offer of further drinks despite our glasses clearly empty. Husband went to bar for speed! Sticky toffee pudding was very nice, if a little drowned in very sweet sauce. Overall not a great experience. Price is about right for food but disappointing service meant no tips from me and I won’t be in a rush to go back.

Three of us went for lunch on Thursday afternoon. When we arrived we were shown to our pre-booked table and given the menus and served drinks. Our food order was taken, but it took quite a while to arrive, in view of the fact that the pub was virtually empty, from memory there were only two or three other tables occupied. When the food eventually arrived it was nicely presented with good portion size. We all agreed that the food was good quality, tasty and cooked just right, again, when we ordered desert there was a long delay between ordering and the food being served, but again we had no complaints about the quality or presentation of the food. We thought that the meal was excellent, but it would have been better if the service had been better.

The Cheese and onion pie was bunt and inedible. We were the only customers eating and there was only one chap sat at the bar. It took about 45 minutes for our food to be served and it was obvious that both meals had been over cooked. My wife's Steak pie filling was nice but the pastry was hard and both portions of the triple cooked chips were also hard. The staff didn't offer any apology and when I asked about what the chef had said about the lack of quality they said that he had gone home! I suspect the pies had been put in the oven and forgotten about and the chips having been pre cooked were just warmed up. I would expect the quality and service to be of a higher standard when charging £16.95 for pie and chips. The staff didn't charge me for the meal I didn't (couldn't) eat, but did charge full price for my wife's just edible meal. The service was very poor and thinking about our experience we were not asked about allergies which seems to be a standard question these day.

Been here a few times since the reopening and the food unfortunately just keeps getting worse. Went for Sunday dinner today and the staff seemed like they couldn’t be bothered being there. We both had the lamb Sunday dinner. Although the lamb was cooked to perfection, the carrots were undercooked and the roast potatoes were stale. It was like they had been cooked in the AM and reheated for our order. We returned them to staff and they just weren’t interested and just said they would pass on the information. Sunday dinner was £19 each and was also charged £8 for two lots of extra gravy which arrived at the table in jugs the size of shot glasses, and was still only half full. Will not be returning.

We arrived at the shoulder of mutton it looked very nice outside and easy to find we were travelling from Rawtenstall. Inside was nice and cosy. We were greeted by a member of the bar staff who asked us if we were eating or just having a drink. We said we were eating. A lady appeared with a flimsy one piece of paper which was a menu. To be honest there was not much choice. We decided on fish and chips Then we were told that it was off the menu. Eventually we decided on steak and ale pie. Which was delicious. My sister had the Mediterranean burger with fries and salad She said it wasn't nice. Overall I would give it 7/10. One by one we went to the toilet 🚽 which was disgusting it was dirty looked like it hadn't been cleaned in weeks. We had taken the dog for a walk to the tower, where other walkers were enjoying the views of the valley and the Manchester back drop in the distance. Down to the shoulder of mutton to build up our energy after the mighty climb to the tower. Roast beef or roast lamb leg - both local Lancashire produce. Big herby roast potatoes, smoothly buttery mash, a giant yorky and lashing of red wine gravy!! What else could you ask for!?? Not only was the food full of flavour, the reception by staff was warm and inviting. Smiles on faces, willing to help where possible. A proper pub with proper food and cracking atmosphere. This was the first opportunity I have had to visit the Shoulder since the new owners have taken over, It has kept its relaxed local pub atmosphere and maintains its walker/dog-friendly status. Food - I had the soup of the day (carrot & pepper) which was good, the bread was slightly odd, more like a cake consistency, was told it was homemade. The only plant-based main available was the Miso aubergine, at £16.95, It was very tasty with the Satay sauce, the only issue was the 'puffed' rice. It was very hard and seemingly not puffed at all, we were told it was 'meant to be like that'. The portion did seem small. For dessert, I had the poached Yorkshire rhubarb which was excellent, if only not enough of it! Another gripe was the menu stated the triple-cooked chips were vegan, I was then told they weren't vegan, and apparently they sometimes are and sometimes aren't?! Surely it makes sense to take that label off the menu if it changes so much... Service - Where do I start, well, we were seated and ready to order but then told by the waiting staff couldn't take our order as the kitchen was preparing a large table's order so we had to wait 45 minutes after being seated to take a food order. With no apology. The starters arrived around 30 minutes later, we were left with empty glasses on the table for very long periods and I personally got up and bypassed the waiting staff to get my own drinks twice, they weren't particularly busy just not attentive. As a former hospitality training manager myself, it was clear the waiting staff were just lacking in training and effective management support and guidance on the floor, they were all friendly and happy to help. I would like to mention the young chap behind the bar who was great, he should definitely be serving tables. The real sour taste of the experience was when I tried to give feedback about the experience to the manager, she was very defensive and even a little aggressive in her responses, at no point apologised for any of the issues just offering pitiful excuses. She begrudgingly took 10% off the bill and then sent over a member of staff to give us the amended bill, which for me, showed a real lack of leadership and disregard for me as a customer. Due to the service, I saw many potential sales of both food and drink lost on other tables, and unfortunately from my own experience, the loss of a regular future customer.

The shoulder of mutton I've always known for being the perfect place for pub food and going the extra mile... In terms of milage goes, they brought greek gyros to their specials... If a traditional pub can deliver this journey to Athens and back in the first mouthful, then they're definitely doing something right in my eyes!!! Mouth watering and full of flavour chicken thigh with the option to upgrade with halloumi... Of course we got halloumi with ours!!! The feta and pomegranate over red salt fries..OMG!!! .... It was such a surprise to have a massive home made flat bread with a culture twist of fattoush salad... Fresh burst of mint and crunchy croutons... The kitchen team need applauding for this saucy little (big portioned) number. If gyros making was an Olympic event, they get hold every time!! Can't wait to see what they bring to the table next time we visit. A pint of boltmaker and a gyros...the perfect Saturday evening!! Thanks to nat and the FOH for their warm welcome and service.

Impromptu visit with a mate last night. Worried at first, as we hadn't booked and the place was heaving on a Wednesday night! (good sign) but our concerns were layed to rest by a friendly, well dressed lad behind the bar. I'd heard rumours that a chef called Nathan had recently returned back there. I'd sampled his food before in both previous incarnations of The Shoulder, and one or two other venues. Let me tell you, what that man does with flavours, is the equivalent of what Bob Ross did with snow covered mountains (and 'happy mistakes ') I opted for the crispy sticky glazed chicken salad whilst my mate had the Korean chicken burger. Both absolutely stunning and I would put good money on not finding anything equal to the flavours, that each dish was packed with, in Korea itself (possibly North, but only in the kitchens of high ranking regime members). Will definitely be back, and well done to the new Shoulder team!

All the main courses were delicious, namely the catch of the day (sea bass), with a lovely salsa and mashed potato. The shin of beef in a tartlet, sirloin steak and traditional fish & chips were also fabulous. 2 of us had white chocolate bavarois, which was light and delicious. My wife had the almond cake and my friend had the cheeseboard with 3 cheeses, which was plentiful. There is a fair size car park and wheelchair accessibility if you eat and drink in the bar area. There are a few steps down into the restaurant area where we were situated. I will definitely be going there again and recommend others to do the same. The chef is clearly talented. Glad to see the place re-open, but despite the Facebook page declaring food is served “all day, every day”, four of us arrived at 2,20pm on a Friday to be told they’d stopped serving food at 2,15pm (which if nothing else seems an arbitrary time to stop serving food?). The place didn’t look any different from previously in the brief glance I got, but I won’t be bothering again.

Whilst the food was excellent, the service was slow and erratic, we did not get all the food we ordered but we did get extra drinks.

I really wanted to like it here. We were looking forward to coming back after the pub changed hands. Unfortunately the decor is still really tired and neglected, and the toilets were absolutely filthy - mouldy taps, sticky floors, stained toilet bowl. The whole place needs a deep clean and a regular cleaning schedule. The service was bad - young staff who need some training. One redeeming factor was that the food was better than previously

Had a great meal at this place recently, very busy on a Sunday but we managed to squeeze in! Nice vegetarian options, accomodating staff, big portions. My only suggestion for improvements would be better non-alcoholic drinks options.

Just had a wonderful meal with the family who were visiting from Liverpool and Australia. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. I had the Pommes Anna which was absolutely delicious, I did get food envy over the shoulder of lamb though, so I'll order that next time. Thanks again for lovely service and fantastic food 😊

Drink and light lunch, very pleasant. Outdoor seating area still needs lots of work, seating benches next to car park with remains of building work, sand and debris, on floor.

First visit back in around a year, fantastic as always and the new menu is divine. Great value for money, fast service and general all round good atmosphere! We had the goats cheese bon bons and ribs to start, the ribs were phenomenal and I recommend to anyone visiting. We then had the chicken burger (with aspen fries) and fish and chips. Fish was super fresh and the burger incredibly tasty.

Lovely place to eat. The food was so amazing omg. My burger was to die for. 100% would recommend if you’re in the area. Beef burger was tasty. My grandma had the soup of the day which was Tomato and Chickpea she enjoyed that too. Lovely outside seating area too especially if the weather is nice. Umbrellas available on the benches.
