Went for an evening meal, met by a wood burner and country pub feel. Cosy welcome feel. Excellent menu choices, recommend the home made individual pies we all had a different starter and main, clean plates all round everyone enjoyed their food. You have a choice of traditional country bar or restaurant, both have a good atmosphere. Highly recommend this pub . Very welcoming staff made you feel like it was our local.

To find a village pub that could cater for nigh on 50 members of our group was amazing (even accepting late arrivals within an hour of our meal). Everyone said the food was superb (choice of four different mains) with one person saying they had been to a Michelin starred restaurant the week before but the Ship was better! The portion sizes were perfect. Everything was served on time, the staff were so friendly and went out of their way to cope with individual dietary needs. We will certainly be going back for more. Many congratulations.

It's a very long time since our last visit to the Ship Inn. The best thing about our visit was the lovely welcome, helpfulness and excellent service. Menu is limited but they were willing to advise and adapt for special diets. Everything served was cooked well, piping hot and tasty. Other half had the sticky toffee pudding, which he highly rated (other people leaving after their own lunch were envious having neglected to order it themselves).

The roasts were clearly yesterday’s warmed up. The crackly was softer than the over cooked veg. The roast potatoes were never freshly cooked. The gravy was cold. The best thing was the frozen Yorkshire pudding which was frozen. Left most of it. Beer was good, that is where it ended.

I have had the pleasure of enjoying a leisurely lunch here with friends and our children and also an evening with my husband. The meals on both occasions have been outstanding. The garden is beautiful and great for our children to run around in which allows us to relax and enjoy our food. The varied menu with the items from the kitchen garden is a lovely touch. The last time we visited they were understaffed and had a large wedding party ordering drinks but they still managed to provide a high level of service. We have spoken to the chef and his sous chef on both occasions and they are thoroughly nice people who enjoy their jobs. This is reflected in the food. We are heading there again soon for a Sunday Roast and cannot wait!

A 5 minute drive from where we were staying and signposted from the main road this charming, traditional establishment is a little off the beaten track but is well worth a visit, a small but good selection of beers and a good "top shelf". The menu has plenty of choice and there should be something for everyone, I had the Braised Octopus to start followed by the Trio of Wild Boar Sausages, for dessert I had Strawberry and Lavender Sorbet with Pistachios and Berries in Sloe Gin, some of the ingredients come the the pubs own garden, suffice to say it was excellent. The staff are friendly and welcoming as are the local patrons. There is a large Beer Garden to the side/rear and plenty of off road parking.

Visited with my husband, a little South Downs get away. Stopped for lunch, didn't book but were very lucky to be accommodated on a busy lunchtime. Waitress (manager?) was absolutely lovely, very knowledgeable about the food and area and took the time to chat and answer our questions despite being obviously very busy! The food was brilliant, better than your usual pub fair. I had the fish and chips and my husband had the wild boar sausages - 3 of them! The garden was beautiful too. Well worth a visit.

Very rude bar staff! I politely asked if I could watch the England Women's World Cup football semi final match at about midday when the pub opened. There was only one other customer in the entire pub. The staff member's reply was a curt 'No'. Not 'sorry, we don't show sport here' or whatever (I can't think why they wouldn't but I know some pubs have a policy on that). The match was on BBC1 so it's nothing to do with not having a sky subscription. Just a straight 'No'! I then asked if the answer would be the same had it been the men's England team but she didn't reply. I wonder why? Maybe because the likelihood is it would be shown and the pub would be bedecked in England flags and bunting with the obligatory bouncy castle for the kids? I know for a fact that Rugby and Wimbledon tennis is shown there (it's on their Facebook page) so maybe they think football would attract the 'wrong sort of people'? I'm having to guess all this because the only word uttered was 'No'. Needless to say I left. Perhaps the manager could reply to this and give a reason? I'm sure others would be interested. It couldn't surely be a simple case of women's football being seen as unimportant? I mean those days are over aren't they?

After weeks of cold weather, wet weather or days that were cold and wet it was sunny today, so we dived out for pub grub - a favourite occupation, better still went it takes you out into some glorious countryside. We decided on the Ship as we always get a good meal there but today it was exceptional - this was gastropub plus in terms of quality and portion size. Wonderful service and a delightful 'hoppy' pint of bitter. Home made food that was top quality and beautifully presented. It's a cliche to say that we ate too much but you HAVE to leave room for the deserts. Prices very competitive too... roll on better weather again so we can sit out in the garden!

We have had drinks and food many times here as it is on one of our favourite walking routes, on a hot day and with friends we stopped at the Ship just for a drink and we’re turned away as we hadn’t booked a table, having explained we didn’t want food just four drinks and we’re happy to sit anywhere without a table we were still declined , a large group of walkers were sat around the pub drinking and on the village green they clearly had not booked. Don’t feel too sorry for this publican as he has clearly recovered from the pandemic restrictions and can now afford to turn business away! We continued our walk feeling very dry thank god the Brushmakers Arms in the vest village was far more accommodating and friendly we will be taking our business there on future walks in the area.

Family group, meeting for the first time in about 18 months, but we had to spend the first 20 mins or so downloading the app and trying to figure it out. All looking at our phone screens instead of talking to each other as we longed to do. The food was great when we eventually managed to order some, and the staff helpful, but really their role is reduced to a kind of delivery person rather than real waiting staff. I'm sure we will go again but I really hope this annoying app business is not going to continue once covid restrictions are over.

We visited the Ship today on the first decent day for a long time, and decided to have a drink in the lovely garden before eating. I was unprepared for the process I had to go through to order a drink in the garden: sign on to the pub's wifi - there being no phone signal - download the Hopt app - and then try to find the drinks required, then having to enter payment details. When at last the drinks arrived, had mistakenly orderred two beers for myself, but not noticed. We decided to look at the menu options with scanty descriptions, and started to order, but losing the will to live opted to remain outside, but having refused to save my card details to Google, had to re-enter the payment details. The food however was fantastic, and we all enjoyed it to the full. The staff put up with us moaning, and even brought us a sweet menu, took an order, and let us pay from a normal card payment machine at the pub door. It did not have the range to reach the garden, which seems a bit of unnecessary limitation. Visit, but be prepared for some hassle while Covid is about.

We were not disappointed, the atmosphere was very friendly an open fire burning and a Christmas tree in the pub area. All Covid restrictions were in place and I felt safe and at ease. The Beer was good after our long walk and the food was great, I had their 6 ounce burger with chips and coleslaw I must say it was one of the best burgers I have eaten full of flavour, crispy bacon, cheese, salad, gherkin and the bun was crisp and fresh, the burger itself was moist and full of meaty flavour. I visited the Ship Inn for lunch recently with my lovely wife and the mother-in-law. It was our first trip out since the end of the recent national lockdown so we were very excited to be out and about again! It was a bit chilly in the main bar area despite the hearty fire so we decided to eat in the attached dining room. It wasn't quite as characterful but it the temperature was much better. There were lots of interesting choices on the menu including plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. My wife and I both opted for the vegan pie of the day - which was pearl barley, mushroom & spinach - while my more carnivorous mother-in-law had a stuffed chicken dish. The pie was absolutely enormous and came with a mountain of chips, roast veg and deliciously cooked red cabbage. Lots of gravy too. I struggled to finish everything and didn't have dinner that evening as I was so full! Definitely not for the faint hearted but very nice!Definitely worth a trip out but not quite five star quality.

We took our two sons and our little dog along and all had a truly delicious Sunday lunch. There was plenty of vegetarian choice, and the veggie Wellington was superb, with the tastiest roast vegetables I’ve had in years. Top marks to the chef. My dessert was a cappuccino cheesecake mousse which was amazing. The whole meal came to £120 for the four of us which given the standard of the food and drink was terrifically good value. My wife and I took advantage of the Government dining offer by visiting this fairly local Inn that we have visited on many previous occasions including bring expat relations from California to this village Inn.The Covid-19 precautions were excellent with well spaced tables inside (it was raining outside) and the grounds are very extensive with children's play area and space for ball games and well space seating. The Ship Inn is a good starting point for local circular walks with nice countryside quiet roads and well marked footpaths, good views and not too far from Marwell Zoological Park and Bishops Waltham, Bishops Palace ruin.We prebooked a table, which is advisable bearing in mind the UK weather conditions and the current government dining offer. The food was very good with my wife having the fish and chips and I had the pork belly. The deserts were great with a large portion of sticky toffee pudding. The staff were friendly and helpful and very much aware of social distancing of customers.

Having spent many a summer in Owslebury growing up visiting my grandmother and now living within 5 Miles of the village, I thought it was about time I visited this pub. I was not at all disappointed. The welcome you receive when walking in is the sort you’d expect being a regular customer. The care that has been taken to ensure COVID protection is second to none whilst not being to over intrusive. The setting is idyllic and the decor has kept with traditional pub but to a high standard. We ate in the garden as it was a lovely summers evening and it was not too overcrowded with tables being set far enough apart for the neighbouring dinners to not be intrusive. The food was cooked to perfection, plentiful and arrived in a good time by attentive staff. I will be definitely be returning again in the not to distant future with friends.

We were given two menu’s for our lunchtime. The first had mostly the regular fare but the 2nd was chef specials. We were spoilt for choice! We had two excellent lunches. Nice to know some of the ingredients are locally sourced or from their garden. It was even better when we realised the lunch was half price being a Monday on the government scheme.

After reading lots of very good reviews about this pub we thought we should try it out however completely the opposite for our experience and feel we have wasted alot of money. When we arrived we had a buggy the staff watched me struggle get it up the stairs two members leaning up against the bar and one the other side of the bar. Food was OK I had the ploughman's very dry no butter etc. and burnt toast. My daughter accidentally smashed a glass to which one of the staff saw, she said she would get something to mop it up, she didnt so I tried the best I could to get it up the same two staff members walked past whilst I was doing this looking but offered no help or anything to get the water up. Dinner Time Outing. This venue is a bit out of the way but it is definitely worth a visit as it is a quaint old English Pub.They have loads of outdoor seating for eating and drinking. You can book tables for groups, and the corona safety is as good as they can make it in an old fashioned country pub. With the one way traffic system and staff wearing face masks and shields.Service was quick, the starters were really good especially the Halloumi sticks and Pork Pie.I had mussels for my mains which were really tasty and a good portion. They did not have ribeye steak, so they switched it to sirloin to accommodate. One steak was ordered well done, one was Mid-well (sac-religious I know). However both came out cooked to a similar temperature of medium (pink centre). However there was no blood and both the steaks were finished off, so no complaints. The side of pepper sauce was very yummy and good that it is served separately.Unfortunately the pub must have had a busy trade, as all the desserts I wanted had sold out . The Brownie was OK and the sticky toffee pudding was enjoyed (but they didn’t have any custard). Not too sure on the vegan meringue dessert, not crunchy, it was more soft and sticky and it comes out on such a long plate which makes the portion size look tiny. However we all took a punt on the desserts and next time hopefully the cheese cake will be back on.All things considered the staff were helpful, friendly and fully corona virus protected up.Cost wise was about £20 per head on the ‘Eat Out 2 Help Out’ scheme which is great value considering we had 3 courses each, a jug of Pimm’s and other soft drinks. Normally the average price would be about £30 per person.Left happy and full!

My wife is a fussy eater, hates veg, gravy, cheese sauce, the list goes on, but she loved the sea bass and everything that went with it. Many years I used to enjoy visiting the Ship Inn as it was always something different - well out of the way, a classic country pub, but charming and welcoming. Decades later I return to find that those same core values are very much in evidence . A warm welcome, well sorted social distancing (an essential in the world of today), a broad choice of drinks and a spot on menu. Sure, there was some delays on the food but what is the hurry? It was all the better for the wait - you don't go to places like this for a 'smash and grab' quick bite. We loved it and won't be waiting another 25 years before returning again!

The wait for drinks was long but not as long as the wait for food. When the food came there was no cutlery so we had a further wait.Service with a smile - if only! For some reason the pub believes that chips are actually overcooked potato wedges with the skins on. I dont know if this is a current trend but when I order fish and chips I expect chips! So many flies and blue bottles that it was a race to see if you could eat your dinner before the flies could get to it.My wife enjoyed her sea bass though.

Went out to catch up with friends after their child's birthday, was sat outside in the garden and after it turned cold we asked the bar staff if we could sit on the restaurant side of the bar, the bar staff agreed we could sit there as no one else was on this side. We have followed the one way system all night albeit on one occasion on the bar staffs correction. When sat outside, ordered using the app where you would receive your drinks as table service. We have been locals for 24 years and never had poor service like this. They refused us further service, were very rude to us, and dismissive when challenged. The pub haven't taken any of our details for the government's advice for track and trace so they shouldn't even be opening to the public. We have booked a table of 10 in a few weeks time but this has now been cancelled due to this one night. Disgraceful bar staff. After all these years and supporting the pub throughout lockdown by ordering takeaways and taking part in the quiz, they will never receive our custom again.

Staff are super friendly and they always make my son feel welcome. If you fancy a family meal this place is great.

We popped in for Sunday lunch - its a little out of the way (for us) but worth a detour driving across pretty countryside. The new team were super-friendly and service was good. There was a nice, varied selection of wines and draft beers. We had Sunday roast (although other choices were available) - chicken (half a chicken - enormous for me) and lamb with roast vegetables and potatoes. I could have done with a tad more gravy but other than that it was all very good. We shared a meringue/toffee dessert which was awesome.

Had lunch here with my wife. The restaurant was nice and airy, and spotlessly clean and bright. We were given a good welcome, and found the menu to have a wide choice. Unusually, we both chose the same dish, a duo of guinea fowl, and were not disappointed. The food was delicious, hot, and beautifully served, and we did not have to wait very long for the food. My only slight regret is that I did not (as I usually do) order extra vegetables, but that did not detract from the meal.

Dinner with friends. Lively atmosphere, attentive service, delicious food, good beer. The new chef and team are doing a great job. Bacon and cheddar scones were warm and crumbly to go with the rich chicken liver parfait, and the noodle, coconut and lemongrass soup was delicious. The guinea fowl two ways ( roast breast / braised leg stuffed hash brown) was a triumph. The burger was very good but quite pricey.

You really should pay a visit. Highly recommended. Outstanding quality prime ingredients were evident on visits between April and May. First with the wine and selection of food sampled on anniversary night and latterly with main meals. Friends agree. The best olives, steak with peppercorn sauce and rack of lamb tasted in a very long time. Bravo. Compliments to the chef, owner and staff for great attention to detail, a super welcome and memorable, mouth-watering food.

Visited this pub on Easter Sunday after a lovely walk around Owslebury. A beautiful pub with a lovely garden in fantastic countryside with good beer and friendly staff. Unfortunately, we found the very loud piped music in the garden very intrusive and not really in keeping with the surroundings, hence we only stayed for one drink.

I was part of a group of 30 who had prebooked, our food in readiness. I hadn't got a high expectation, though The Ship is squeaky clean, and a classy Farrow and Ball decorated interior.

David, the new publican at The Ship is tireless in turning around The Ship and as a result, it's one of the loveliest, best value places to eat around. I had a big party of 30 booked in, but no matter, his young team coped admirably. He deserves congratulations and good fortune in making a proper, homely, friendly, quality venue in the pretty village of Owslebury. All 30 of us were delighted, so thank you!

Let me tell you as an experienced pub regular, things have changed and all due to an incredble new owner, dogged by the worse luck that you can imagine, who has persisted despite problems outside of his control, fortunatly now coming to an end. As customers under a number of different landlords this one is incredibly kind and understanding, Hopefully he has turned the corner as inherited problems are brought under control, during this time old customers have learnt to respect and admire his courage under constant pressure, a new kitchen, the garden refurnished, complete with a whole range of new furniture, That he withstood the problems faced, says much for his character, as a customer of several years, using the pubs faciltes, I know that I am not alone in congratulating a young man whose vision now at last is complete!

A group of us booked lunch here on bank holiday Monday. I had the roast beef dinner, chewy cheap cut of beef, nice lot of vegetables, no horseradish, felt it had been cooked the previous day and re heated, I ate it but didn't enjoy it at all. My partner had the loaded burger and chips, which was over cooked and dried out! We didn't like to complain as our friends had booked it and we didn't want them to feel bad. We wanted coffee but we're told they had run out of milk. They never even offered a desert menu! I wish I'd read the reviews before hand as believe me they're all true, would we eat there again....not a chance! BTW its not often I write a bad review but felt this was necessary.

Went to try The Ship for the first time today for a Sunday Lunch. The sign said "Sunday Roast from £9:50. A young girl (20'ish) greeted us warmly at the bar, there was a 6'5" lad behind the bar too, but he couldn't serve alcohol.

Popped along to The Ship as we have on many previous occasions. Found the door still locked at 12.15 had to ring to get in - appears it was accidentally locked following a delivery although the pub was empty. Only one beer available & only serving jacket spuds & ciabattas on a lunchtime. Hope this was just a one off !!! Had many a good lunch & evening here perhaps will give it another try>

Had a really nice meal for 8 of us on Friday so food all good. We called on Sunday to see if sky sports showing match and was told it was so came back from Winchester after spurs game for Man Utd game to be told they pay on a game per game basis and the landlord didn’t want to pay today after all. We spoke to him when we got there and he was really awkward, he gave us a free pint but wouldn’t even let us pay for the game. Go for food but not for football.

My and husband and I arrived at The Ship at lunchtime after a five mile walk so we were very hungry! The girl behind the bar gave us a warm welcome and was helpful in her advice over the real ales and white wine. We took our drinks outside to enjoy the late autumn sunshine and pondered over the menu. Lots of choice of what I would call ‘proper pub food’. Nothing fancy, but after a long walk just what was needed. We both chose fish and chips which we thoroughly enjoyed. Fresh, flaky hake in perfect crispy batter, crunchy chips, peas, salad and tartare sauce. Delicious! And, sustained us for our walk home. It was a little quiet for a Friday lunchtime, which was a shame, but I am certain this pub attracts locals and visitors alike. Thank you.

Firstly, I must apologise for taking this long to review! I have spent so much time actually telling people directly how good this place is and what a worthwhile trip it would be to make. Admittedly, I didn't even know the village existed, let alone the pub. A recommendation gave the impetus to visit...

What seemed like a nightmare trip home turned out to be amazing, thanks to the Ship Inn and their team. We were on our way back to Germany but got caught up in the major traffic around the M3, and saw a sign for the pub saying they had a garden and I thought it is nicer waiting around a pub in the sun than staying in the car for a long time, especially for my boys. Arriving at the pub they were still closed but as a lot of cars turned up they opened up earlier for us.

This is the first occasion we have visited The Ship Inn. We were drawn by the promise of a bouncy castle and there was lots of other play equipment suitable for children and the garden was fantastic. It was a hot and sunny day and this made our experience even better. The pub itself comprises a Public bar and Lounge. The menu is not huge (lunchtime) but the prices are reasonable and food is very good. Service is fine and in my view good food is worth a wait. The Children's menu is excellent and it makes a welcome change to find a pub that recognises Children's food should be good and tasty and not too expensive - great work. The staff were all friendly and helpful and our experience was delightful. We even returned the following day for Sunday lunch. This was also good quality and great value. I would certainly recommend a visit. If the pub can maintain this standard it is on a winning roll.

I hate to complain as I work in the industry, but our visit was less than satisfactory. We came because we it was a lovely evening and we knew they had a great garden. We ordered our drinks and food at the bar and sat in the garden, we only ordered light bites of camembert and soup and chips but this took at least an hour to arrive. It was not busy at all so we were not sure why it took so long, on asking the staff a couple of times, we were informed that he had made a mistake and that our food was only just being started on. This was fine but the food did not arrive for far longer than expected after we had queried it. When it finally arrived, the bread for the camembert was burnt and the cauliflower and Stilton soup was very watery. No one checked on our meal to see if everything was ok. We paid and left. Such a disappointment as this pub is in such a nice location.

I hadn't been to the Ship Inn in many years. It used to be such a great pub, we enjoyed many family days here but things changed and we never came back. My daughter in law suggested to come for a Sunday roast with my grandchildren so we finally returned this weekend. I have to say we had a great time. The food was great, we had mostly Sunday roast and a Ploughmans. My grandchildren had sausage and chips and macaroni cheese and they thoroughly enjoyed it. Though they did just want to leave the table to play. There was lots for them to do, just like I remember from all those years ago. Except now they have a bouncy castle as well. I would definitely return here again, the staff were lovely. The girl that served us was new but both her and her manager were very pleasant. I would recommend this pub to anyone with young children.

We went for a Sunday lunch as it was a gorgeous day. We hadn't been in years but previously knew it was a hidden gem. Well we arrived, ordered drinks at the bar to be overcharged for drinks, twice. Bar staff were incredibly young and clearly not trained. We ordered food and waited about 45 minutes despite there only being 7 tables in the whole pub. Food was terrible. My salmon was overcooked and dry. My potatoes were clearly from a tin and cold to the point that my butter didn't even melt on them on a hot day! My husbands burger was dry with no salad on it. Kids enjoyed their meal as it was margarita pizza..... how could you go wrong. Managers/ landlords were sat in the garden oblivious to the poor service and terrible food. I did complain to staff who's reply was that they would "give my feedback". In short, I will never be returning to The Ship Inn. I'm gutted that this little gem has been such a disappointment. Badly run, staff clearly need training, and food is terrible.

I hadn't been to The Ship for many years but it seemed an ideal stopping point for a quick lunch en route from Hayling Island to Cheshire. My wife and I arrived at about 1230, one other couple was in the garden and the restaurant had not started to fill up for Sunday Lunch. We ordered two simple mixed platters but had to wait 55 minutes for them and, when they arrived, the calamari was inedible. To be fair, the other items were fine. As a result our planned "quick light lunch" meant a delayed start to a long journey at a time when the kitchen cannot have been under great pressure. To add insult to injury, others who arrived well after us were served their meals before us and, on two occasions when I went in to chase up our order there was no-one behind the bar! Some serious management intervention is needed to get things on track!

Visited at 1pm on a Sunday. I haven't been here for years so was surprised that the pub and garden was virtually empty. First problem was that we were overcharged by more than £10 and the staff didn't really apologise when we pointed this out but just gave the reason why.( they charged for a bottle of wine and not a glass) Next we had to wait an hour for food. When it came the salad was limp and dry and not good enough to serve. There were no proper attentive staff, no napkins, no staff took our plates and asked if we wanted a pudding so we left. Now we know why the place was empty!!

When a pub with a great outside area is almost deserted on a glorious May evening during half term, you should suspect something is not right. Perhaps we caught the Ship on a bad night, but our experience was not a good one. For a start, there was only one bitter available, then we had an interminable wait - almost an hour - for two straightforward meals at a time when the kitchen cannot possibly have been busy. Apart from a good steak pie (possibly bought in) and some tasty sweet potato fries, the food was poor. Chicken fillet was overcooked and smothered in an inedible, overpowering piri sauce whilst accompanying salad and vegetables were totally inadequate in quality.A bizarre touch was the request by staff to retain our credit card because we were eating in the Garden.Overall, not a good experience.

As we had seen the Easter Egg Hunt advertised we thought we would go and not only entertain the children but to also have lunch at this lovely village 'local' pub. A big shout out to these guys. Service & food was brilliant. We were visiting my dad in the hospital & as the visiting hours are 2pm onwards 🙄 I thought I would take my mum for lunch first. How can you mess up a Ploughman’s Lunch? Come to the D&C and see. Microwaved half baguette that went dry, crisp and stale immediately. Cheese was appalling. The worst type of cheap, tasteless, doughy cheddar. Pork pie that was missing the pork. We will not be returning.

We thought it was good but no more. The staff were very polite and attentive. Excellent sourdough (although would of been nice to be included on a £49.95 for 3 course lunch) and cracking pigs in blankets. Cured trout was a lovely light starter. Beef fillet although accurately cooked lacked the wood fired characteristics. A fillet really doesn't have enough time to get flavour from the wood fired oven due to its size. Other larger cuts of beef with some fat would be a better choice. Accompanying veg were ok but the cauliflower cheese again lacked any of the advertised 'wood fired' flavour and cheese sauce a little thin. We also thought this recently when dining in the Avenue restaurant what a shame there are no real local sparkling wines listed. Yes Ridgeview is in Southern England but some 70 miles away. You've got excellent quality producers like Black Chalk, Hattingley Valley, Louis Pommery, Raimes, Candover Brook and The Grange all within 10 miles.

Really cozy bakery, went at about 1.20pm so there wasn't as much stock as first hoped (recommend going fairly early cod the full range) however what they did have was fantastic. The brownies are moist, chocolatey and very rich. Very friendly service too!
