The King's Head in Winchester

Good food. Very pricey. Beer selection is shocking..some decent craft beers and imports would turn it around. Atmosphere and building superb and garden is wonderful. Kinda pretentious management. Not a village pub, more an expensive restaurant with high end gin and a load of bullsh1t tasting notes....

Spot on service, the waitress was very attentive. My Burger was gorgeous and my partner’s ‘Pie of the day’ was lovely with soft pastry and proper gravy. Dinner for 2 with 25% on a Wednesday was very welcome!

We stayed one night in the Spitfire suite, which was really quirky. The suite had a bedroom, bathroom with shower, and sitting room with tea making facilities. The bed was really comfy with nice pillows, and the shower had good pressure. The hotel has a good ambience with a true pub atmosphere and friendly, helpful staff. We had dinner - fantastic standard of food. We had artichoke soup and pork rillettes for starter, followed by fish pie and pork rib eye with chorizo cassoulet for main course. It was all beautifully presented and tasted delicious. Only one of us had breakfast the next day, but that was an equally delicious eggs royale with the eggs cooked just right. We will definitely return again for another stay.

Nice bar in the pretty village of Hursley. Very expensive for what it is and a pint of Madri lager at £6.75 is a prime example of this? Staff are friendly but seem distant and uninterested. A party of 3 had attempted to book lunch, but due to a problem with staff, their booking was cancelled. They asked the young lady behind the bar if there was anywhere else offering food. She sent them to The White Horse at Otterburn... probably 3+ miles away. Yet, barely 400m from The Kings Head, is The Dolphin? To her credit she did phone ahead and make their booking. As an ex publican I find this to be particularly strange? The prices would likely keep me away from a return visit.

Best Sunday roast we have had so far in Hampshire. Beef and pork were both very good and vegetables were seasonal and well cooked. Pub feels modern with a good selection of beers and wine list. Very happy with the service. Looked after us after a decent hike to get there

We stayed for 2 nights at the Kings Head. The room was very clean, and well presented, with a comfortable bed, tea and coffee making facilities, a TV, and a decent sized bathroom, with a bath and a shower. We had small problem with the sink not emptying, but it didn’t spoil our experience. We had the full cooked breakfast both mornings, and took advantage of the 25% discount on the Wednesday evening meal. The eating area was pleasantly furnished and decorated, the staff were friendly, and the food was good. Overall the Kings Head is a friendly and welcoming pub, with a nice ambience in the bar. We would definitely stay again if visiting the area.

Very accommodating, booked a family room and had dinner and breakfast, The food was nice and the staff couldn't do enough for us during our stay.

Food quality was good but portion of roast meat was small.

The meal we had was really delicious, very hot and good sized portions. The service was quite slow considering it was not busy in the pub and the staff seemed unaware that the booking on their website takes a deposit for groups over 6 which caused slight confusion when paying however they were all very polite and sorted it out with no issue.

What a lovely friendly comfortable stay we had at The Kings Head. The room was warm and located to the front of the building with a pretty view of the church opposite. The evening meal was delicious and hot, with a speedy Friendly smile from our waitess. We liked that we had fresh milk in a flask for our room.. No continental breakfast available, but an excellent choice for hot cooked breakfasts to set you on your way. Well done Adam, you have a wonderful team.

What stood out was the thoughtful accommodation for my friend, who cannot have garlic – the staff went out of their way to serve her a delicious Garlic bread alternative. I was particularly pleased to find my favorite non-alcoholic drink on the menu, the 00 Guinness, which complemented the meal perfectly. The staff's attention to detail and dedication to providing an inclusive menu did not go unnoticed. As our lunch unfolded, we found ourselves engrossed in conversation long after the other customers had left. A lovely venue, But at the price, must pay more attention to detail. Returned 5 days later to still find my cigar in one of the outside ashtrays.

Stayed the night to celebrate my birthday on Saturday. As soon as you walk in your greeted by fresh flowers everywhere (nice touch) and a warm welcome. Very attractive bar area and snug, perfect for watching the rugby! Our room was huge, with all amenities you need plus a beautiful roll top bath and huge shower if you prefer. Dinner was excellent, it's a beautiful room to dine in. Note to the guy who made my expresso martini - wow! Definitely would recommend this pub.

Booked for 7vadults and 3 dogs for Sunday lunch. Seating was perfect and we felt very welcome. Food was delicious and service was excellent. We will definitely be returning. Highly recommend.

Lovely pub, great food and service. Have previously stayed at the White Horse in Chilgrove and found it on par. Will return and certainly keep my eye out for Butcombe chains.

Good food, let down by poor service. We felt as if the two young staff members were ignoring us, as it took ages before they took our drinks order then had to wait quite a long time before they took food orders. When the food did arrive, only five out of six dishes were served. We had to find someone and ask to get the final dish served. No one came to check if everything was OK with our meal, and then it took a long time again to get the dessert ordered. Meanwhile other tables had been served quickly. Overall not a happy experience.

Nice well presented pub situated in the heart of the village. Dog friendly with a warm atmosphere and a lovely open fire.

Great food, plenty of choice. Good choice of beers. Staff very welcoming and helpfull- 2 members of staff came to help us get our elderly aunt down the stairs. There are a few stairs to get into the pub, there is a stair free access but It was very long and through the beer garden that was too far for my Aunt to walk with her frame. I will be visiting again when next in the area.

Came today for a Sunday Roast with my teenage daughter (very fussy eater) ! The M3 was at a standstill, I called to say we would be late for our booking. The young guy on the phone told me not to worry, I wouldn’t lose my reservation. We eventually arrived (albeit a little stressed) to be greeted by friendly and smiling staff. We were shown to our table and offered drinks straightaway. As soon as the drinks arrived, we were ready to order and they were ready to take our order. Service was prompt, the staff were great. Very accommodating. The Manager (Sam) was very welcoming, and no job was too small. If we needed it, she got it. Will definitely be back again ! This little gem is well worth a visit.

Rather better cooking than most local restaurants at slightly more expensive prices. Waitresses seemed to be rather inexperienced and in retrospect I wonder if they were natural English speakers.

We had the burger and fries and the fish and chips. I have to say our meals were the best we have ever had anywhere. Jonny the chef is a pretty amazing guy obviously. I’ve never met him but I did ask how long the chef had been working here. Apparently a while now and I think he’s a gem of a chef. Amazing food. Amazing service and dog friendly and pleasant all round. Thank you so much.

Overpriced poor quality food . Fish and chips arrived and looked spectacular but for some unknown reason a folded napkin was placed on the plate and the food , including mushy peas , was placed on top of it - why ?? The chicken and leek pie filling was very watery and the solid lump of mash served with it was very dry and completely tasteless .If ordered as a side dish you will be charged £5.50 for this . There also seems to be little knowledge of the correct way to serve an affogatto. A blob of ice cream served in a tiny bowl which left no room to pour over the coffee . We will not be dining here again

Today I was treated to Sunday lunch at this pub by my two adult sons as a birthday treat and wanted to write a review whilst everything was still fresh in my mind. Having read other reviews , I can't believe we were dining at the same establishment but here goes...... On arrival we were stood at the bar for a good 5 minutes before anyone acknowledged us . Staff behind the bar continued to serve 2 locals who were sat on bar stools.We eventually were seated in the beautifully decorated dining area.We were promptly given menus,but it was a good 10 minutes before anyone came to take our drinks order, and another 10 before they arrived. All 3 of us ordered the roast beef which again there was a fairly long wait for, but the place was busy so we just looked forward to it arriving. The plates came out with beef , potatoes , yorkshire pudding etc and the veg came out on a separate plate . Now all 3 of us are slim with average sized appetites, but we couldnt work out if the veg was just for one of us or if there was more to follow. Swede , cabbage and just 3 tiny , tiny parsnips !! A passing young lad , tall with dark hair noticed that we didnt have any serving implements and were just using our cutlery ( didn't bother us ) but he appeared with a pair of serving spoons . That was the highlight and one of the only compliments I can give .I asked politely if that was all the veg or if there was more to come . He wasn't sure so I just asked if there was a chance of a few more parsnips rather than just the one each . Some minutes later another plate of swede and cabbage appeared but no parsnips ! We just got on with it . Roast beef was nice but the rest of it was bland and without flavour. We ordered 4 puddings , mini doughnuts , 2 ice creams and a crumble and a coffee to go with it . The coffee arrived well before the puds and my son had virtually finished it by the time they came . 3 of the puds were fine but my crumble was hot on the very top but two thirds icy cold . The bowl was piping hot so it had obviously been in the oven , just not for long enough. I could have sent it back, but the others had finished and I didn't really want another 30 min wait or so to then eat in front of them, so I just got on with it and left the larger icy bits . Shame as the flavour was really tasty. Other than the disappointing food , our other main point to make was the staff. One older lady seemed more pre occupied with her computer screen than checking on the customers . There was a large party of Italians that left whilst we were finishing our puddings, and another lady began clearing their table .She had to walk past us 3 or 4 times with trays of empties but failed to look at us or notice that we were trying to get her attention to ask for the bill . It took us about 15 minutes to get someones attention and at that time it was 3.30 pm and other than one other table of 4, we were the only diners in the room.At no point during our visit did anyone ask us how the food was , whether we enjoyed our meal etc , not even when paying the bill. to be honest they probably didn't care ! Now , I was worried that I might be turning into a grumpy old woman so asked my son's opinion. The younger one just said 'crap'but the older one said 'poor attention to detail, style over substance' .A really disappointing birthday meal which wasn't cheap.I have friends that have raved about this place so what went wrong today ??!! Great young lad though, he is a credit to you and could teach the ladies a thing or two when it comes to customer service.

I hosted my birthday party here at the end of October 😁… Norbert made it a very painless and enjoyable experience. He helped me select the food for the buffet, which was superb, they even made my birthday cake … enough for the 80 + guests. Nothing was too much trouble for him or his staff… We stayed overnight with some of our guests who had travelled… Rooms are lovely, clean and the bed was soooo comfy… a large group of us went down for breakfast and again, nothing too much trouble and we enjoyed a leisurely delicious breakfast. I have had so many lovely comments about the party, the food and how attentive all of the staff were. I can’t thank you all enough… may have to do it again next year 😁

We stopped here on our way to Winchester. Glad we did. Friendly welcome as soon as we stepped inside, efficient service and excellent food in a lovely atmosphere. We will definitely be calling in again for lunch next time we are passing by. A wide range of dishes available. Highly recommend.

Alles in allem eine tolle Unterkunft. Das Zimmer hatte alles was man braucht, war sauber, das Bad ist groß und das Essen (Abendessen & Frühstück) schmeckt super. Chef und Personal waren wirklich lieb. Am Abend gabs Live-Musik in der Bar. Da sollte man sich halt bewusst sein, dass man in einem Pub schläft und die Musik auch im Zimmer hörbar ist. War für uns aber kein Problem und haben den Aufenthalt sehr genossen.

Came back after about a month, this time with my wife and kid. Absolutely amazing is all I have to say the food was delicious and the service was impeccable. The waiter(Charlie) was all by him self. And let me tell you we couldn’t tell, everything went perfectly and we could tell the other tables were impressed as well. Well done kitchen and a big well done to charlie you made our special day out even better. We will be back again soon.
