We had a very successful family gathering in the Watercress Room. The staff came up with everything we asked for and thought ahead for us. Guests commented on what a nice place it was.

We didn’t stay here; this review is for the restaurant only! We came here for lunch on Mother’s Day, but the experience didn’t match up to what we were expecting. While the staff were absolutely lovely and extremely attentive, the food just wasn’t up to scratch. Lots of the food was lacking flavour, for example the ham hock starter was really tasteless (somehow the ham just didn’t taste like anything). The overall theme felt like they were focussing more on quantity rather than quality. For example the roast dinners were covered in a generic instant gravy, plain boiled vegetables, dry roast potatoes that had been sitting out too long, and a cauliflower cheese that didn’t taste at all cheesey. The chicken and ham pie was, again, massive, but with only a bit of pastry along the top instead of around the whole filling it felt lacking again. The flavour again was quite plain and didn’t deliver what we expected. Our mothers had the salmon and I wish I did too! It looked great and they seemed very happy with it. I also had a taste of the spicy chilli beef starter and that really was great, so I know big flavours can be done! However when paying £18 for a main, I’d really expect all of it to have a lot more care and attention paid to it and it be packed full of flavour.

We've visited The Swan several times in the past. The menu rarely seems to change with very little choice for those who have allergies. We have had the roast dinner in the past but as we've always found it to be tough and a little bland avoided it today. One of our party did choose the roast and really struggled to eat the meat as it was tough. The rest of the food was okay, but we felt we were on a bit of a conveyor belt, service was a little chaotic and the staff a bit unfriendly. It is Mothers' Day so I understand it was busy but when you are spending a lot of money on a meal you should expect to be given a little 1:1 treatment.

We booked in August for a stay of 2 nights in December. When booking we informed the hotel that one of our party was a coeliac and also repeated this when confirming our reservation. One of the reasons we chose The Swan was because the menus looked gluten free friendly. In this case gfo seems to stand for gluten free omission as opposed to gluten free option! At dinner the first night the gf fish offered was small, overcooked and looked as if it had been bought in. The desserts were gluten free if the gluten free products could be removed eg. ice cream but no brandy basket. At breakfast the sausage had to be omitted from the full English because it wasn’t gluten free, the gluten free toast was burnt on one side. There were no gf cereals available. The Christmas meal consisted of a risotto that was lovely but no sausage or stuffing with the main meal and a minuscule Christmas pudding. Next morning the breakfast came with one slice of gluten free toast. Apparently they needed to go to the Tesco Express if any more was needed. When all this was mentioned at reception the receptionist could only say that her gluten free friends had far worse service at other places. She also said that although it had been on our booking for several months the kitchen were not informed until the day of eating about dietary needs. All in all it was a very disappointing experience.

We organised a surprise leaving/emigration party for my mum this afternoon. Whilst having an amazing roast dinner with immediate family, friends set to decorating the dining room. When a few guests arrived at the wrong time with mum spotting them, Lino the manager was quick off the mark ushering them away to their ‘pretend’ table. Helen and her team made the most amazing cakes, Pip and Co were just so understanding and nothing was too much trouble. The food was traditional home cooked pub food, really tasty. We would highly recommend.

The waiting staff were great and special thanks to Angie who booked us the Snug room, which was the perfect size room, giving us some family privacy. Visited for breakfast with a family member. The place didn’t seem to be busy, only a couple of other tables were occupied when we arrived. We asked a staff member to take our order as we had a baby to feed. The staff member growled at me she’ll take our order in a minute. Another staff member sensing her hostility then came over, apologised for her colleagues reaction and took our order for two breakfasts, tea, toast and fruit juice We couldn’t have been made to feel less welcome and when we chased our toast for the second we were met with a really glowering look. She might as well have not brought it out as we’d almost finished our breakfast by this point. The atmosphere was tense and awful and we couldn’t wait to leave. I didn’t bother to report foil in my fruit juice as I’d lost the will to enjoy the morning in the end. Can’t say I’ll be back in a hurry!

We were on holiday in the area, with a small group & were looking for a late lunch venue ( many pubs stop serving at 3pm around there) when we found the Swan - so glad we did! We were shown to a big round table, where the 7 of us could sit together, in an eclectically decorated room, and given our menus. A smiling waitress took our orders, and served us very generous portions of excellent food. ( Sharing platter, fish & chips, Irish Stew were some of the orders) We were all so full, we couldn't manage a dessert, but next time...... Good food, generous portions, great staff - my only gripe is that it isn't nearer home, but any time I travel down the M3, I know where I'll be aiming to for a meal!

Called for a drink Sunday afternoon, we visit Alresford every Sunday and always stop for a drink. This is the first time we called into The Swan, wondered why it was empty, compared to The Bell Inn.They had the football on and although there were only 3 lads watching it they very loud which ruined it for me.In my opinion it's a nicer place than The Bell which I went to last week. The food in The Swan looked good although we didn't try it.Would definitely return because the food looked decent and lovely decor but not when the football is on.Think they are missing a trick - why attract 3 people for the football when they could gain more custom from people staying longer and enjoying the peace and quiet. It is really nicely furnished and would be a good place to stayThink they should cater for their residents and not have the sport on, would be very unhappy if I was staying here, but only because of the TV! If it wasn't for that the hotel would have a much better atmosphere that reflects how well it's done out!

Portion size generous but not overwhelming. Service was good but not intrusive and the bar is well stocked with a wide range of local and popular beers, ciders and wines.Only one minor observation. My Wife ordered the Chicken Ceaser Salad and when it arrived it contained anchovies which she does not like. In culinary terms a Ceaser Salad which contains anchovies is a 'Classic Ceaser Salad' whereas 'A Chicken Ceaser Salad'is just that.Overall very good and well worth a visit

My daughter and I shared a twin. Her bed had a lovely mattress and she had a great night’s sleep. Mine was completely different, it was so hard and the bed squeaked so I had a broken night’s sleep. My parents also shared a twin room. My Mum’s mattress was the same as mine and she barely slept and my Dad’s was too small for the bed frame with about a five cm gap on either side. It looked like a child’s mattress. The breakfast was super and the staff were very accommodating. It’s just a shame the beds were so awful.

The staff were attentive friendly and helpful throughout the evening, the food looked good on paper but when it arrived i was disappointed. I ordered pan fried trout with vermicelli noodle salad. The trout was nice but the salad didn't seem to go with it and wasn't appetising for me and i left most of it. My wife also had steak and stilton pie, which looked amazing but my wife said it was very salty and was spoiled because they seasoned the steak but forgot about the saltiness of the blue cheese so she didn't enjoy this very much either. Made me think, was there no scallops at all then? If there wasn't, I would have been more than happy to have just had the sea bass with the risotto. With that being a big dish as it is and at the price you are selling it for, why not just say we haven't got any scallops, but can do you the dish without the scallops. We often visit the restaurant at The Swan in New Alresford to meet for a lunch with friends we have known for 50 years. The Hotel is roughly mid-way between our homes. Friendly service and excellent-value, well-cooked meals from the specials menu encourage us to come again.

Very popular breakfast and a great deal on a Wednesday for fish & chips. Very professional chefs who obviously take pride in their work to dish up good pub grub for all the family.

Had a great Sunday lunch with a very void menu selection. Staff very attentive and helpfully. Know their menu and drinks range. A word of warning the starters could well be the mains, huge portion of white bait and cream of mushroom soup which was ample. Eyes won and when for the Sunday roast, vast quantity of good quality food. Parking is good on the premises and surrounding area. Well worth a visit.

Called in for a family lunch. We ordered 3 macaroni cheese. When our food arrived the 3 macaroni cheese (at £10.95 each) was a bowl of pasta with 2 slices of tomato with a few grains of cheese on and was tasteless. Nobody came to ask if everything was okay. My son was hungry and he ate his but my husband and I left ours.

On a snowy morning, our group arrived at different times but this was not a problem - the waitress was happy to wait. Then our food arrived quickly and was very good, she spotted the second arrivals and appeared promptly to take their orders.

Having lived in Alresford for many years, I had not eaten in the Swan for many years. We chose it as they were serving food on a Sunday evening (unlike most of the other places in town). The food was excellent and way beyond our expectations. We chose to eat in the bar where there was more atmosphere although the dining room looked very good (but empty).

Yet another nice meal at the Swan, great atmosphere, meal served by Oliver. I eat and drink regularly at the Swan and would highly recommend it as both a restaurant and a hotel.

We had been here before and weren't disappointed this time. Nice patio at the back, good beer (gin & tonic for my daughter) and good food - what's not to like?

The full English Breakfast was fantastic. I can also recommend the coffee. There are 2 possible rooms breakfast rooms. One has a descriptive map of The Watercress Line running the length of one wall.

We went for a Saturday lunch. I had the watercress and cheese soufflé which was heavenly, my friend had fish and chips. The servings were very generous and the food cooked to perfection.

The steak was fabulous - well cooked and well seasoned, and reasonable price too. friends also rated their chicken dishHaving spent a couple of days in the area and visited several pubs and restaurants the visit here was one of the better. Service was painfully slow, with disinterested staff who seemed more interested in talking among themselves.Great village location and beautifully kept pub and garden

The beef mushroom and red wine pie was absolutely delicious. The pastry was flaky, the filling was packed with flavor, and the mustard and horseradish mash was the perfect accompaniment. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the service was friendly and attentive. Definitely recommend this pub for a hearty and satisfying meal.

A little gem of a place. A menu with tradititional favourites but also a good mix of non traditional and seasonal specials. The food and staff were excellent, with a friendly social atmosphere. No blaring music so conversation was easy.

Have visited this pub many times and the food has always been good, but today I was so dreadfully disappointed. We arrived early as we know they are not very accommodating to you even if you arrive 10 minutes before end of service, and the pub was very quiet. Two girls were on, one who we have seen many times and is always lovely and professional, but the other was clearly ill and coughing all over the place. I heard a table near me ask her to move away from them as they paid the bill it was that bad. We ordered the gnocchi, something I normally really enjoy and order a lot when I eat out and also cook at home so I know how it should be served. This was not good at all, it came dry and bland, no seasoning, cold and tasteless. The girls did not come back to our table to ask how our food was as they could see we had left it so I think each was hoping the other would deal with us. In the end we had to make our way over to the counter to pay and I politely said to the coughing girl that could I offer some feedback which she accepted and said she would mention to the chef, no offer of a discount even though we had not eaten either meal and still charged us full price and seemed unconcerned that we had received below parr food. That was bad enough but when I came on to write this review I see that others have also had the same experience of this dish? Clearly the chef feels the customer is wrong and he/she is right. This dish is all fluff and no substance, should take it off the menu or you’re gonna get more complaints!

We stopped here for Sunday lunch on our way home from the New Forest. We chose a roast which was a generous size with fresh veg, a Hugh Yorkshire and the meat just melted in the mouth. The staff were friendly and service was prompt. Isaac was very friendly and helped choose a great red wine to compliment our dinner. Would definitely recommend a visit to this cosy pub… 🤩
