Visited this establishment to try their food. I had the burger, sounded good but had some issues. First the buger was served on a wooden tray with no barrier between the food and wood. Unless you wanted to pick the burger up this left eating options limited. I did ask the server for a plate and was given a side plate. I only had a small amount of chips in the metal container, compleatly different from my friends who had fuller portions. Everything was served in separate containers which I get could be a nieche thing for them but eating wise was not practical. The sauces were then also delivered in small container. It seemed they are causing themselves so much more work with no reward. Give me a plate and a bottle of sauce any day. To the actual food. It was cooked well and was tasty. Sadly a friend had the fish and chips and the fish was very overcooked. The servers in general were polite and helpful although communication seemed lacking between them. It was a classic dark pub feel which was ok once eyes adjusted. There was a flickering light above our table but was able to re direct the light from us thankfully. My suggestions 1. Get rid of the wooden trays unless your going to put some greaseproof paper between the wood and food. 2. Get rid of all the extra holders for everything, it's not economical and if you watch your customers you'll see most would rather all on the same plate. 3. Check your frying time as burnt batter is not enjoyable. The food and presentation was not worth the price paid. Correct these simple things and I'd happily try visiting again.

Lovely traditional pub with friendly and efficient staff. We visited for Sunday lunch which was very good. Well cooked (no crunchy vegetables or bleeding lamb - well done chef). My roast lamb was in fact some of the tenderest I think I’ve had. Good food, good portions, good service, cosy surroundings and a reasonable price. What’s not to like?

I was a member of a group of eight and visited the Horse & Groom at around 8pm mid week. I ordered ‘line caught’ cod & chips and triple cooked chips. I was hugely disappointed with the menu item when the dish arrived. The fish was very small and undercooked and I counted 17 chips. This meal cost £18 and quite frankly I can’t recall such a traditional pub classic of such abjectly poor quality. I should have been assertive and refused to accept the dish but didn’t want to cause embarrassment to other diners.

We had booked by online a table for two on the 19/05/24, I had received the confirmation of our booking and a remainder on the 18/05/24 to the booking. So on the Sunday 19 at 1 pm we went to have our Sunday lunch but to our surprise the doorman told us that the kitchen was closed as they were not serving food as the Watercress Festival was on and when I said we have here on my phone the booking confirmation plus the reminder of yesterday, the doorman said the online booking wasn’t working for a few days, what I excuse was that, shame on you. If food was not going to be served this Sunday the 19/05/24 your company should not taking my booking and let me know that not food was going to be served only drinks. So it is the second time your company let us down, for that reason I will not loose my time trying to book and/or going to your restaurant. There are others in Alresford that are very good and friendly. As I said shame on you!!!

This Alresford pub is worth stepping into for its historic roots, beautiful interiors, delicious food and buzzing atmosphere. New owners, John and Ruth, have completely transformed this previously dark and uninviting drinking hole into to a bright, welcoming space in the centre of this historic market town. The live music on a Friday night is not to be missed, with visitors spilling out onto the pedestrianised street on a warm summer’s evening. Come for the hospitality, and stay for the food. The new menu plays to the chef’s strengths and it’s great to see a step away from the usual “country pub” fare. The hake and chorizo is not to be missed.

Popped in on Sunday afternoon with my wife for a few drinks. We are regular visitors to the area and always enjoy ourselves in New Alresford. The pub was busy but never had to wait long for our drinks , the service was friendly and welcoming. After seeing the standard of the Sunday lunches being served we decided to sample them for ourselves and we were not disappointed. I had the three meat lunch with all of the trimmings, it was lovely. The meat was tender and the selection of veg was tasty and well presented. It was a tasty way to round off my stay, I am sure the deserts were lovely but I didn't have room for them unfortunately. Thanks to all of the staff and I look forward to returning.

We were out for our usual lunchtime walk on Monday this week and as we were passing the Horse & Groom we decided to have a spontaneous lunch out! We were greeted by super friendly staff and lovely to see Cruzcampo on draft!! We ordered two beers and two sandwiches. Now, we have eaten here before the change of ownership last year and the food was nice, but our lunch on this day was by far the best we have had. I am a BIG chip critic, and I honestly couldn't complain about them! I had the roast beef and horseradish sandwich and my husband had the vegetarian halloumi and roast pepper - both came with chips and coleslaw. The beef was really tender and the lightly toasted bread was such a nice touch. My husband said the halloumi was delicious too. The staff were great and checking in on us during the meal. All in all a great lunch choice and really affordable too. The saddest part was we had to go back to work so we couldn't stay for longer!

We took a table outside which was a little scruffy but nice. The Menus were dirty and tatty and we were not given the lunchtime menu. When the food arrived there had been a miss communication and only three meals delivered. There was no cheese on the childrens pasta and no sauces offered. The kitchen made up the misses sandwich fast. The sandwich was fresh and tasty and the chips lovely and crunch. In all the service was rubbish but the food was nice. Bathroom was rather dirty too.

Mixed views really with no great faults but not raving about it either. As a positive this appears to be the only pub locally that does food on Tuesdays now. My Tuesday pie special was great. The plant burger my wife had lacked any imagination. As it was for a veggie a salad garnish would have been nice. Just had chips with it something I always find disappointing with any burger meal. Add peas or salad, and make the plate look properly used. Staff were really friendly and it is an oldie worldly setting. Would go back but if eating in the area again on a different day of week, will try somewhere different to compare what's available. Four main meals at lunchtime with one beer and three waters was £61.

How can you mess up a Ploughman’s Lunch? Come to the D&C and see. Microwaved half baguette that went dry, crisp and stale immediately. Cheese was appalling. The worst type of cheap, tasteless, doughy cheddar. Pork pie that was missing the pork. We will not be returning.

We thought it was good but no more. The staff were very polite and attentive. Excellent sourdough (although would of been nice to be included on a £49.95 for 3 course lunch) and cracking pigs in blankets. Cured trout was a lovely light starter. Beef fillet although accurately cooked lacked the wood fired characteristics. A fillet really doesn't have enough time to get flavour from the wood fired oven due to its size. Other larger cuts of beef with some fat would be a better choice. Accompanying veg were ok but the cauliflower cheese again lacked any of the advertised 'wood fired' flavour and cheese sauce a little thin. We also thought this recently when dining in the Avenue restaurant what a shame there are no real local sparkling wines listed. Yes Ridgeview is in Southern England but some 70 miles away. You've got excellent quality producers like Black Chalk, Hattingley Valley, Louis Pommery, Raimes, Candover Brook and The Grange all within 10 miles.
