I went here for Sunday roast and was left a little disappointed. The staff were excellent throughout. The roast beef was good, I had the trio roast which was with beef, pork and chicken (the chicken and pork were over done), and considering you pay more for this, I expected a larger amount of meat, instead it was a normal amount of meat but divided up into three different types of meat. Then the veg arrived and we were given the same portion as they gave to single and couple customers (I know this because I was looking around at other tables) were given but we were sharing between 4 people! Sharing a veg portion for one person between 4 meant we didn’t get much each. This I found very disappointing.

Ordered a Vegan Burger, just to make sure I asked if all the ingredients are Vegan as they should be. Server advised run out of Vegan Buns ( another server told us they have never had them ) and the Coleslaw was not Vegan either. So we were served a small flat Vegan Burger with a slice of Tomato some Lettuce and a small portion of Chips for £13 !!!!!!. Luckily Vegan food is our choice but if someone with a Milk / Egg allergy would have had a Brioche Bun and not checked they would be in real trouble.

Tried this place 3 times now. 1st excellent food and guest ale choices superb. The next two times food not great and guest beer on each occasion the selection were poor. So on a count of 3 I'll give it miss rather than shelling out in the hope it will be rewarding.

Lived in Warsash for 25 yrs. Seen this pub go through various owners and names and eventually as The Hook thought we would give the restaurant a go for Sunday lunch. In a word "Disappointed" wish we hadn't bothered, the Sunday roast was over priced and sparse. Service mediocre at best. Probably wait another 25 yrs before we go again. Such a shame, would have been so easy to get this right. Oh well....

Having heard good things about the place I was keen to try it out as we were going to the area. Well it has been done up well and is a very pleasant place to sit both inside and out , but if I am going to a pub I like to drink a pint of beer/ale. Sunday afternoon when we went it looked everybody was drinking lager or wine , and after having a sip of the beer i had ordered I knew why. It was awful , any publican serving beer that tastes like that obviously has no idea how to look after ale. Oh and as I am complaining lets mention the cost , 1 pint of ale , a diet coke and a packet of crisps £9.10. I hope they have a good local trade as I wont be recommending it to anybody.

Our second visit. Four of us had Sunday lunch here. Good service, friendly and well organised. Very good food, lots of choice for those we did not want a roast. We had the beef and ale pie, a pizza and Mac and cheese. I had the roast beef, it was great to have the choice of the smaller portion which left room for dessert. We had the brownie and chocolate torte, both very good. Prices very reasonable too.

Being local to us we popped in just for a drink recently and this review is based solely on that. The pub has new owners, they also own the Horse and Jockey on the Botley Rd and they’ve put some money in the place . Being an ale drinker I was disappointed to see the tasteless Doom Bar on offer but pleased to see a good ale from the Cheriton brewery on tap. I had a pint of this and the wife a half shandy. When I was informed of the price I was taken aback. So much so I asked the barman how much an actual pint was . £4-90 was his reply. Outrageous. A similar pint from the same brewery was had a week previously, locally, at under £4! While I’m keen to support local pubs in these times I won’t be going back to the Ship and Shovel again.

Popped in after a dog walk on Saturday afternoon, just after a quick drink. Plenty of room for 2 of us and our 3 dogs on the outside decking, despite it being a warm day and already being quite busy. A lady promptly welcomed us and said we could sit in the shaded area and would be offered table service shortly. Brilliant! No apps or trotting through to the bar here! We were promptly asked for our order which soon arrived and we paid there and then via contact less. Excellent! Why can't everywhere be this welcoming, attentive and efficient??? The locals were just as friendly as the staff, happily chatting to us and our dogs and making us feel comfortable and welcome. We had just left another pub nearby owing to their non existent customer service, so this place was a real reminder of how it should be done. I will definitely go back, it was a really nice experience and a lesson to others on how it should be done. Treat your customers like this and they WILL come back. I'm already looking forward to it. Thank you!

Friendly staff greeted us as we sat in the garden, took our order and brought it out to us, saving us a trip to the bar. The garden was spacious with beautiful hanging baskets, and lots of tables. We didn’t eat on this occasion, but they are going to have an Italian restaurant in the pub, as well as normal pub grub, so will be visiting again.

Visited for lunch with my wife and in-laws on my birthday. All of our meals were very good, in fact my steak 'knocked spots' off the one I had at 'Harpers' the previous week (and very much more reasonably priced). Staff overheard that it was my birthday, hence my dessert was delivered with a candle and chorus of happy birthday.... nice touch! Will definitely visit again... overall very good.

I haven’t been to The Ship and Shovel since its name was changed from the Ferryman. It is now however under new management with Ryan and Lauren as managers who I know from their Strawberry Field Tavern days. And so I went with an old friend to wish them well, sample the beers and have some lunch. We were greeted by Ryan who was his usual cheerful and attentive self throughout. The inside of the pub is attractive and spacious, with plenty of distance between tables; indeed all coronavirus precautions were well maintained. There is a wide range of beers and the menu had a good range of choices, including a number of pub classics, burgers and sandwiches. I had a sausage and onion chutney sandwich and my friend had a sausage and brie panini, both of which were accompanied by a portion of chips and a small salad dressing and both were well presented and very good quality. The service throughout was prompt and friendly and we were more than happy to linger after lunch in the relaxing ambience over a few more beers.

Pubs (and restaurants) has had a tsunami of challenges facing them since the 2008 credit crunch. Any small and or independent pub (or restaurant) that has survived these financial tsunami’s deserve all the support they can get. Unfortunately many of the said surviving pubs which survived the financial crisis of 2008 and still managed to provide good or even fair quality food, stumbled after the challenges presented after the tsunamis of the past 8 years, which included the pandemic. With that in mind it is always great to still stumble upon pubs that are still able to provide good quality food, especially at mire reasonable prices.

So asked for Black Forest hot chocolate but they gave it to me without cream , when I asked for cream to which she said "you asked for black forest hot chocolate ", I said if you look in the picture it comes with cream. So she gave me cream, which ran out, and then she was going to give me that, so I asked for more cream as it was a tiny amount , so they she found some eventually then that ran out, so it was no where near what the picture looked like . So Costa either makes sure you have the supplies in, and your staff have the right attitude for the public because she clearly did not 👎

This is on the Warsash side of the river. A great location though some might think a little difficult to visit by car. Following a small lane you park in the boatyard, if you give them your vehicle details, your parking is free. We visited early in the evening and it was very quiet, I can imagine it’s more busy during the summer months. There is plenty of outside seating that looks really nice with a river view. We only had a drink but it is light, airy & modern.
