Lovely food, great friendly staff,we visited a few times on our holiday to winchelsea beach caravan park, the Sunday roast was the best Sunday roast I've had in a long time, although it was £18 for a roast, it was worth it, we also had scampi another afternoon that was very nice too, it's a shame it isn't open in the evenings. I think it closes at 3 or 4 pm, but definatly worth a visit If your in the area, the coffee is very nice too .

Took my wife and family here for Sunday roast. Read good reviews about this place. However not my experience. When we telephoned to make a booking we asked about the price and was told £18.50 for each person. When we advised that seems expensive we were told '' Well it is a big Roast'' so we booked. When we got our roast we were surprised how small it was. It was 3 slices of meat, 5 very small rock hard potatoes, 1 yorkshire, very small pig in blanket and minute piece of stuffing. Then presented with one medium bowl of steamed vegtables between the four of us. The meat was very fatty and chewy, potatoes rock hard. All in all I would not say it was worth anywhere near the money we were charged for such a roast. Non of us really enjoyed the meal and to be honest I would say it was the smallest and worse roast I have experienced. As you would expect I cannot recommend the Ship. We will not be returning. Very over rated experience.

After reading the reviews, I had high hopes for this restaurant/pub. Whilst the staff are very friendly, and the pub is very clean, the food, however, fell short of expectations , the roast potatoes reminded me of cheap frozen potatoes , They was very tough and dry inside. Also, the stuffing portion was very small and the Yorkshire puddings were the colour of a chocolate muffin and whilst the meat you could eat was very nice both the beef and the lamb seem to have quite a lot of fat on it,Overall not the biggest portions in anything served.

This is a Butchers/deli/Shop/Cafe/Restaurant, an unusual combination. Lovely shop selling lots of foodies local products, on the site of a formal pub. The Restaurant is excellent, with indoor tables and a large landscape garden, we were gobsmacked how lovely it was in the summer. The menu continually changes due to local ingredients, so they use chalk boards, Instead of printed menus.

Good pub lunch favourites with the benefit of very local products from the on-site butchers. Roast is excellent. The farm shop adjacent is available if you want some of the bottled beers etc so accidentally huge selection of drinks if the shop is open.

Absolutely wonderful pub/restaurant. I had the ploughman's which was in all honesty the best I've ever had and my partner had nachos after they were recommended by the lovely waitress ,they also were next level, finished off sharing a treacle tart. I was a bit confused by this one when I walked in because the bar area seemed a bit inconsequential to the rest of the indoor space, and it had more of the feeling of a café / restaurant with a butchers shop bolted onto it rather than a pub. So I wasn’t actually surprised to read on Whatpub that it reopened in 2022 after the pandemic as a Café Bar as the décor is certainly fitting with that description. The area in front of the small bar does have a couple of comfortable settees to lounge in but the rest of the space to the left and right of the bar are set to tables for eating and certainly feels more café than pub. The drinks choices are limited and there is a solitary ale hand pump with the ubiquitous Harvey’s Sussex Best. We visited here for lunch after walking the nature reserve from Rye Harbour and for that purpose it was a good experience. Wanting to avoid fried food we went for the lamb chops and the butternut squash curry and they were both very good. Unfortunately I couldn’t say the same about the beer and let’s just say I have had better pints of Sussex Best. We sat inside in the dining section but the Ship Inn does benefit from a fantastic outside landscaped garden at the back. Its hard to describe but it more resembles well planted sand dunes, and you follow a path that winds its way through lush tall planting discovering individual sections with their own tables and chairs basically separated from all the other sections. So, it’s like having your own private garden space to drink and eat in. Dogs are welcome in this section, but they just have to be kept on a lead. That is perfectly sensible because if you let them off and they run off you are never going to find the thing and other diners are not going to appreciate you disturbing their individual space whilst you hunt for your mutt. This place is obviously set up to service people from the nearby Winchelsea Sands Holiday Park or people who are walking the excellent Rye Harbour nature reserve. If you are looking to eat, then I would recommend this one over the Pub 31 down the road. If you are only after a beer then I would possibly say stick with Pub31, unless you have a fine weather day, when I would think you might like to experience the garden here.

My friend, Aurelia suggested this local restaurant for lunch near her Winchelsea Beach home. A delicious lunch in a garden where the outdoor seating is surrounded by wildflowers and palm and olive trees. The inside decor was very beachy and colorful. We had the fish and chips and shrimp scampi appetizer which was very tasty and fresh. The sliders were perfectly made, cappuccinos piping hot. Service was wonderful. Shout out to Nat. We found the Ship just around the corner from the cottage, when we were staying. The breakfast was delicious, with the ingredients being supplied by Jamie's Butchers which has a shop attached to the ship. If you are staying in the area, it's a must. We ended up going everyday for a good start to the day, staff are friendly and if you are stuck to where to visit they can suggest places. Folkstone wasn't a place we thought to visit but glad they suggested it. The restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch, last orders I think is 3.00pm. Its not open in the evening, unfortunately. The shop has all sorts of goodies, wine, sprits, pies, sausage rolls and of course a high quality butcher.

Steak day! Getting a steak in a restaurant which has Jamie Wickens’ butchery under the same roof is a no-brainer. This was £10 per head for steak and chips with a sauce and excellent value. Generous steak and a pile of chips. Sides (spicy coleslaw and scampi!) were positively cheap. The venue is bright and breezy with a good wine list. Check out the wine in the deli too.

Menu was different to what is on the website, thats what prompted us to go. Sadly no lamb, which is surprising as they have great reviews about it. The starter was fine, but I had ordered king prawns, when they arrived they looked to be tinned shrimps, tiny little things. Most definitely not king prawns and definitely not fresh. I came here quite a few times after it had been refurbished and couldn't believe how nice it was. A fantastic seashore themed garden and great food to savour. I came here today with my wife and two friends. I wish I hadn't. So disappointed! There wasn't ANY food available, even bar snacks, as we hadn't booked in advance. It didn't look full, I think they were simply struggling to cope with the few customers they had. Undeterred I tried to book or order for a later time slot only to be told they would be closing at 5pm and wouldn't reopen until the next day!! This is a bank holiday weekend. Quite unbelievable. The garden is now looking faded and neglected. In need of some real investment and care before things get to a point of no return. A little like their customer service. Such a shame. Won't be coming back.

Saw this place whilst out for a drive with my hubby and mother in law so decided to pop in for a cuppa. The decor is fab and the whole place is spotlessly clean. We had a lovely spot right next to the fire where we were able to take our time and enjoy our drinks. Prices very reasonable and love the deli shop attached to it. Will be back one evening to try out the menu which looked lovely.

The Ship is perhaps not what you’d expect of an “Inn” being instead a well-stocked delicatessen, quality butcher, warm informal café – and excellent restaurant. We visited just after Christmas so the festive menu was still available. The wild pigeon breast starter was perfectly cooked slightly pink and came with a smooth, dense port sauce. The terrine clearly benefited from the presence of the butcher in the adjoining deli because it contained good chunks of the venison and chicken liver. One of us then had the seabream which was simply but well cooked with a plentiful crayfish sauce. The other main course was two cuts of wild duck: the leg had been slow cooked with the skin nicely crisp while the duck breast was left pink and succulent. Both mains were accompanied with suitable and well cooked vegetables: the fish with crushed potatoes and the duck with shallots and seasonal veg. We’d eaten well and enjoyed a large glass of wine each so should not perhaps have been tempted by the dessert list – because the “Christmas Pudding Crème Brûlée” was in any case rather substantial. The menu at the Ship is fairly short and creative but the most outstanding feature is the “value for money” because it’s possible to spend more and not enjoy such good cooking in the area.

Good little pub with an element of quirkiness.Thought staff were friendly and setting nice. The boutique style shop within the pub confounds is a clever addition.Food looked decent but didn't eat on this occasion.

We were treated by our friends to dinner at the Ship. We have eaten the before and it was very good. The staff are still very good however the Sunday roast was abysmal. The beef was chewy and one meal had to go back as too rare. The roast spuds were square grey tasteless lumps. The other veg was cold and tasteless. I must say that the carrots were ok.The crumble was ok but this is easy and the mainstay if school cookery classes. We didn't complain as we were guests and our hosts didn't want to make a fuss. They agreed with our assessment. Maybe a stand in chef. But the once buzzy restaurant was virtually empty.

A beautiful garden. Terrible food lamb shank was disgusting. Soup ok but stale bread. Smoked fish rather awful. How can they get it so wrong when next to the best butcher and grocer Jamie's. If they got a decent chef this place with its beautiful outdoor garden would be very special. At the moment it's very disappointing unless you are looking for a bog standard pub lunch.

Visited here as a large group of friends and family. We all really enjoyed our lunch. Freshly prepared and tasty. Well priced. The garden is made up of lots of little paths and seating areas. Lots of wildlife and very peaceful. We sat outside as the weather was lush, however the restaurant inside did look really cool, modern and newly refurbished. I would recommend to others to try, especially if you are staying in a caravan over the road as you can walk here.

Had a fabulous day at the ship. All the tables looked fab and the hog roast was to die for. Can totally recommend the ship as an eatery and for a function. The staff were so efficient and they made it stress free.

This used to be a great pub/restaurant (we've used it for years) but the menu keeps shrinking and the prices rising :-( our last visit was very disappointing again - apart from three 'specials' the choices were various steaks or burgers and that was it :-( also expensive - maybe that's why it was only a third full on a Friday night :-( hope it picks up soon - it used to have a great varied traditional pub menu. Also some of our party weren't convinced that pink burgers were safe to eat...

What a great find, although when we first drove past it we didn't realise how big this establishment was. Looks are deceiving, but when we got inside we found a comfortable bar with a deli bar joined. We ordered drinks by the very polite bar person and then we headed through the very plush but small inside restaurant to an oasis of a garden. The garden has a beach theme running throughout, but each table is secluded from the others, with plants and such. The garden has been very well thought out and well executed, an absolute joy to sit in such tranquil settings. We returned the next evening to try the food and it was LOVELY and fresh! and reasonable priced. An absolutely beautiful place, a truly hidden gem in Winchelsea. The owner and bar staff were polite and nothing was too much trouble. Thank you for taking care of my family and I. Definitely recommend.......

I’m down on holiday and eaten here TWICE! It’s that good. I recommend the Dansak and the naan was delicious as was the sag aloo - lovely mint sauce and dips and fresh crispy poppadums. It’s a small restaurant but better than many larger ones . Friendly staff and good value - top marks 😃

I've read a few not quite so favourable reviews recently - you can only report as you find, I understand that- so I thought I'd add this one from this evening. Four of us enjoyed a relaxing meal, at reasonable cost (ok, the desserts might be a smidge expensive, but they were nice); main courses of steak and kidney pud (which my friend thought was the best she had probably ever eaten out), giant haddock and chips, which really was pretty sizeable and lovely, Moroccan stew -very tasty with good sides, and belly pork (with which the mustard mash was a highlight) were well cooked and enjoyed by all. A new barrel of Harveys Best had just been tapped, and wine by the glass was good value and quality. Service was exemplary (yes, the pub wasn't that busy, but that doesn't always mean good service). We thoroughly enjoyed our evening - both members of front-of-house staff who looked after us (one apparently being very new) were delightful, and added to our enjoyment.

Good experience. Donar was very tasty and interaction with staff was excellent. Wish I had found this place earlier for quick meals.
